The language on stage and in questions : a study of verbal game in Alfred Jarry, Eugène Ionesco, Jean Tardieu, Valère Novarina’s worksLi, Jiaying 20 December 2018 (has links)
Starting with the conjecture that Valère Novarina’s “theatre of the verb” is less a singular phenomenon in the contemporary theatrical landscape than a form of culmination of previous attempts to search for a dedramatized theatre based on a “dehumanized” language, this study retraces the spiritual path that connects Jarry’s pataphysics to Novarina’s logodynamics, via the nonsense in Ionesco and Tardieu’s writings, path under the sign of verbal game. By situating this last notion in the modern perspective (anti-utilitarian and anti-anthropocentric) of language and theatre, the study questions, firstly, the particular relations between the verbal game and the “non-dramatic” theatre of the twentieth century. Next, by examining the four forms of verbal game in Jarry, Ionesco, Tardieu and Novarina’s works, both in the scriptures and in scenic explorations, the thesis invites the readers to understand the verbal game as a manifestation of the doubt about the language, a critical power towards conformism, a call for change of perception and for movement of all “rules of the game”.

The Empire of Words: a study of theatrical word of Valère Novarina.Oliveira, Lígia Souza de 25 June 2018 (has links)
The present thesis intends to argue the construction of the word in the dramaturgical work of the Franco-Swiss Valère Novarina. Recognized as one of the greatest playwrights in activity in France, he is also director, painter and drawer. His work - divided into theoretical propositions, purely theatrical and utopian theater - is built from the precept that the word must break with daily communication and link its embodiment in actor. To account these angles, two aspects are analyzed in this survey: the idea of language games minted by Ludwig Wittgenstein, used here to develop the Novarina\'s emphasis on the disjointed word; and the vocality idea developed by Paul Zumthor, which alludes to corporeal and physiological concepts constructed in Valère Novarina work\'s. We conclude this theoretical study with an analysis of John Austin\'s theory of speech acts and his intersection with the playwright\'s work. For this, was reviwed the recent Novarina\'s textual production. With the practice of republishing texts after performance season, Novarina exalts the transformations made by the scene. Thus, this thesis engaged to analysis three playwright\'s texts, two of which are already published. Firstily we compare the texts Le Vivier des Noms and Entrée Perpértuelle, - the latter, the book\'s scenic version that was published in 2015. This chapter was the basis for the analysis of the transformations found in the written text, which reverberate the scenic achievements. In a second moment, was analyze the text L\'homme hors de lui, not yet published. The text analyzed is kind of archive of the textual transformations resulting from the scenic creative process, which can be followed in 2017, and which gave support to indicate how the textual modifications come from the performance. Finally, the study ends with the presentation of the excerpt Les Quatre États du Texte, present in the book Lumières du Corps to draw parallels between the creative process of Novarina and the text that is based on the construction of language in space. These are followed by some thesis that deepen and reinforce the sundry creative processes to which Novarina\'s text is linked, giving a dimension of playwright work\'s tichness and mainly of the performative condition of his texts, even if on paper.

This dissertation focuses on the readability of literature—on the readability of a certain literature: French, contemporary, a literature that is more often than not classified in the poetic field. At first, a simple observation: some books are difficult to read. Sometimes we even get so far as to say they are unreadable; if this judgment cannot provide a rigorous concept to describe the texts, it nevertheless raises a number of questions which are at the heart of this dissertation. For there is nothing unreadable in itself: the unreadable is not a property, but a judgment that translates an impasse in reading. Thus, the verdicts of unreadability have varied causes and consequences. The unreadable is situated: it is difficult to approach it outside of its circumstances, since it refers less to a specific content than to an experience.
The objective here is not to alleviate the misunderstanding that can be felt in front of certain texts, but rather to question the place it occupies in our ways of reading and our relation to literature. This dissertation proposes to reflect on these questions by approaching the works of Jean-Michel Reynard, Christophe Tarkos, Denis Roche, Anne-Marie Albiach, Christian Prigent, Valère Novarina and Pierre Guyotat. These works do not all have the same place in this dissertation. In this sense, the aim is not to exhaust them but to raise a number of questions through them. Different questions according to the works, according to the writers, but which are crossed by a common thread: the literary experience.
From singular situations, the goal is thus to understand certain aspects, certain modalities of the literary experience. The two poles of this experience are writing and reading—related to those are the figures of the writer and the reader, which occupy an important place in this dissertation. Therefore, the perspective is broad, which raises questions sometimes of poietic, centred on the way writers live the creation of their works, and sometimes more of poetic, even politic, which rather refer to the ways in which readers, on their side, experience these radically singular texts.
In short, the objectives of this dissertation are: 1) to study these works from a new angle; 2) through their problematic example, to lay the foundations for a reflection on readability that gives a large place to the writers’ posture and the way they live the creation of their works; and 3) to contribute to studies on creation, reception and mediation of literary works by reflecting on our ways of living (with) literature.
