Charles-Valentin Alkan's "Esquisses," Op. 63: A Pedagogical Guide for Early Advanced Students

Sun, Ce 05 1900 (has links)
Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813–1888) was a French composer and virtuoso pianist. His music writing covers many genres. His major works are extremely difficult to play and decipher, due to their length and heavy texture. But his collection of miniatures called Esquisses is a hidden treasure. The range of this work is vast: it includes short character pieces in various styles and genres, from pre-Baroque to Impressionism. Alkan showed his mature compositional skill, endless creativity in these pieces. This work can be classified into eight unique styles. I choose one piece from each style to give a thorough analysis of Alkan's musical language and guidance either technical or musically challenging passages. I hope this dissertation can assist both teachers and students in learning this underrated work.

Communication en tant que prédestination et authenticité d'une personne dans l'oeuvre de Valentin Raspoutine et Alexandre Vampilov / Communication as predestination and feature of an artistic personality in Valentin Rasputin and Aleksandr Vampilov's creative work

Yazeva, Alexandra 18 October 2013 (has links)
Valentin Rasputin (born 17 March 1937) and Aleksandr Vampilov (19 August1937-17 August 1972) are the two authors whose creative work is of particular interest to the contemporary literary criticism. The emotional and philosophical penetration into «the Other’s nature» as well as the aspiration for its aesthetic recreation are quite typical of the both artists. The role of artistic anthropology in the two creators’ aesthetics still needs its interpretation and is open to research. The given thesis proves that it’s the communicative space of Rasputin and Vampilov’s works that contains the vectors of the artistic personality’s predestination and feature. The study reveals an aim of the unique personality’s artistic existence, the existence of the narratator, the personage and the narrator, in the pieces of art created by the writer and the playwright.

It focuses mainly on his theatrical practice the several influences and experiences in the first period of his artistic production in Munich in between the years 1920 and 1925, when he lived with many artists, among them the comic Karl Valentin from whom he received contributions to the elaboration of his further works in which the irony and the grotesque are introduced. This research tries to understand how Bertolt Brecht always worried about the aesthetic fruition of the work (feel and instruct), and how he appropriates these elements and recreates them giving a new perspective inside his work as a constitutive element of criticism / O presente estudo propõe uma reflexão contemporânea por meio da análise e identificação da presença da comicidade na obra artística de Bertolt Brecht.

A Stylistic Evaluation of Charles Valentin Alkan's Piano Music: a Lecture Recital, together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt, Schumann, and Villa-Lobos

Ahn, Joel, 1957- 12 1900 (has links)
Charles Valentin Alkan (1813-1888), one of the great genii in music history, was widely misunderstood by his contemporaries because of his highly idiosyncratic ideas. From the perspective of the late twentieth century, his innovations can be better understood, and his music is now gaining wider appreciation. Yet, today many musicians still do not know even his name, much less his achievements. The year 1988 marks the one hundredth year since his death. In commemoration of this centennial anniversary, this thesis is presented as a plea for a greater awareness of the achievements of this important figure in the development of piano music.

Valentin Roeser’s Essay on the Clarinet (1764) Background and Commentary

Rice, Albert Richard 01 January 1977 (has links)
Valentin Roeser’s Essai d’instruction à l’usage de ceux qui composent pour la clarinette et le cor is the earliest treatise on instrumentation and the first theoretical study of the clarinet. Comparisons are drawn with other eighteenth-century instructional materials, e.g. Francoeur’s Diapason général, La Borde’s Essai sur la musique, and Vanderhagen’s Méthode nouvelle et raisonnée pour la clarinette. A history of the chalumeau and two-keyed clarinet is presented, along with a biographical sketch of Roeser and an English translation of the first section of the Essai. Appendices include a checklist of Roeser’s writings and a list of eighteenth-century music using the chalumeau.

The Historical Significant of Alkan¡¦s Concerti da Camera, Op.10.

Yang, Ming-ming 06 February 2012 (has links)
Charles-Valentin Alkan ( 1813-1888 ), French composer and pianist at early nineteenth century, devoted himself to write piano music only as Chopin during his entire life. As a child prodigy, his talent of performing piano was recognized when he was quite young, then, became as an outstanding pianist of his time. However, because of his unsociable personality and strange behavior, Alkan was soon forgotten by the public. His music was discovered in recent decades by scholars and pianists. They started to explore his works; consequently, he became famous again. There are three parts in this study. The first part aims on his mysterious life. The second part seeks to clarify the development of the concerto and the musical environment of Paris at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The last part should focus on music style and structure based on his earlier work Concerto da Camera, No. 10. Hopefully, through the research, the historical significant of Alkan can be defined more precisely.
