Overcoming logistical problems in organizations : The case of Elicom AB

<p>This paper presents an empirical case study of the company Elicom AB. Elicom AB is producing electrical devices that are mostly used in the telecom market where the main customers are. The data that was collected from this case was collected through observations, interviews and the study of company documents. This allowed the author to compare secondary and primary data, as well as quantitative and qualitative information. The problem, the company is facing in the logistical field, was discovered in the labeling production process.</p><p>The production of the labels is unnecessarily complicated and inefficient due to incompatibility of the computer systems. Therefore some parts of the label design have to be made manually, even though the company has a scanning system. When analyzing the problem in detail it became clear to the author that it could be fixed easily and fast and that the key individuals involved in the process already knew the answer to the problem. Therefore the question of the underlying cause of the problem arose. Why has the company not yet fixed the problem if it is so obvious and also everybody in the organization is aware of it?</p><p>When further reanalyzing the problem, the author discovered a second problem, which was not lying in the logistics of the production process, but had its roots in the organizational structure. The problem of interfering authorities and responsibilities made it impossible for the company to overcome the changes needed to solve the logistical problem in the labeling production process. Therefore this problem must be addressed first, together with overcoming the obstacles to change in the organization, to make a problem-solving-process in the logistical area possible.</p><p>In general this paper shows the interrelation of logistics with organization and the highly complex environment manufacturing companies are facing when it comes to changes in the production process.</p> / <p>Denna uppsats är en empirisk fallstudie som gjordes på Elicom AB. Elicom AB är en tillverkare av elektrisk apparatur som till mestadels används inom Telecom-marknaden, vilket också är den marknad som de flesta av företagets kunder finns inom. Den data som författaren samlat in är igenom observationer, intervjuer samt analys av olika interna företagsdokument. Detta gjorde att författaren kunde jämföra sekundär-och primär-data samt kvalitativ-och kvantitativ-data. Problemet som företaget hade framför sig var av logistisk karaktär och upptäcktes i etikettproduktionsprocessen.</p><p>Produktionen av etiketter är onödigt komplicerad och ineffektiv pga icke kompatibla datasystem. Därför sker visa delar av skapandet av etiketter manuellt, även om företaget har ett scanning system. Efter viss analys blev det dock klart för författaren att problemet var lätt att ordna upp och att huvudpersonerna som var involverade, i etikett hanteringen, visste om att problemet var lätt löst men gjorde inget åt situationen. Detta ledde till att författaren fråga sig vad den underliggande orsaken, till detta problem, kunde vara. Varför har inte företaget gjort något åt problemet om det har varit uppenbart för dem att problemet existerar?</p><p>När all information sedan om analyserades, upptäckte författaren ett andra problem vilket inte var inom logistikområdet utan hade sina rötter i organisationens struktur. Problemet med överlappande auktoritet, samt ansvarsområden, gör det omöjligt för företaget att lösa deras logistiska problem inom etiketthanteringen. Därför måste detta problem ses över först, samtidigt som inställningen till förändring måste ändras för att göra det möjligt att skapa en ”problem-lösnings-process” i den logistiska delen.</p><p>Generellt visar denna fallstudie på relationen mellan logistik- och organisation och på den mycket komplicerade miljön som tillverkande företag ställs inför vid en förändring av sina processer.</p>

Kvalitet och Processutveckling : -Av elektroniskt informationsutbyte (EDI)

Syftet med detta examensarbete är att undersöka möjligheterna för utökad kundnytta och kvalitetssäkra implementeringsprocessen av elektroniskt informationsutbyte (EDI). Detta uppnås med kvalitetsutveckling som grund, vilket omfattar processorientering. Rapporten inleds med en beskrivning av arbetets syfte och vilka problem som står till grund. Vidare introduceras företaget som uppdragsgivare och relevant teori tas upp, detta för att bilda en referensram inför de metoder som använts för att förbättra processen. Slutligen så presenteras resultaten och en diskussion hålls kring detta, med vidare rekommendationer för fortsatt utveckling. EDI processen har visualiserats dels med hjälp av akademiska litteraturer och dels från empiriskt material. Visualiseringen av processen har bildat en översikt av dess brister och problemområden (bland annat tidsfördelningen utmed processen och grunden till låg kvalitetsstandard), vilket har gett möjligheter till effektiva lösningsförslag för vidareutveckling. De främsta verktygen som har använts för visualiseringen är processkartläggning och värdeflödesanalys (VSM). I Rapporten presenteras dessutom ett avsnitt om ledningsstruktur för att underlätta processorientering och en allmän beskrivelse om själva EDI tekniken med avsikt att sprida kunskap. Examensarbetet bidrar med processkartor för EDI processen, lösningsförslag för identifierade problemområden och rekommendationer för fortsatt utveckling. / The aim of this master’s thesis is to examine the possibilities of increased customer value and to ensure quality for the implementation process of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). This will be achieved with quality development as a foundation, which consists of process orientation. The report will initially describe the purpose of the master’s thesis and what problems that are the reason behind it. Following is a short description of the company who has requested the job and necessary theories are presented, in order to build a foundation for the upcoming methods that have been used. Finally there will be a presentation of the results and a discussion will be held around the subject, with further recommendations for continued development. The EDI process has been visualized partly with the help of academic literature and partly trough empirical data. The visualization has established an overview of the process with its flaws and weaknesses (inter alia the distribution of time throughout the process and reasons for low quality), which enables suggestions for effective solutions. The foremost tools that has been used for this purpose is the process mapping and the Value Stream Mapping (VSM). The report also presents a segment about management structure in order to facilitate the process orientation and a general description about the EDI technology in order to distribute knowledge. The master’s thesis contributes with maps for the EDI process, suggested solutions for identified problems and recommendations for continued development.

Organizace a řízení výroby v podniku / Organization and management of production in selected enterprise

The topic of my dissertation is "Organization and management of production in selected enterprise". The main goal of this dissertation is mapping of selected enterprise in one year period and obtain sufficient amount of information for future analysis and suggest possible improvements. The identification data, characteristic, products and services and production planning of selected enterprise are provided in introduction of practical part of this dissertation. Analysis of present state with mapping of present state for individually semi-finished products is introduced in the next part of dissertation. For analysis of present state was calculated VA index and for each semi-finished product was created diagram of material movement in next chapter. The goal of analyses and diagram is the finding of narrow spaces in the material flow. The target map of future state was created in the next part. This map is based on present map. The future map presents critical factors that need to be improved. Finally it defines a new VA index, which should be approach to the current state. The penultimate section includes recommendations methods and elements of lean production to the new production hall which the company wants to build. Among the recommended methods are mainly the 5S method, visualization, standardization, SMED and Bottleneck. The last chapter contains a number of measures. For example employee motivation, continuous improvement, personal responsibility, introduction of EDI and ergonomics which would lead to the improvement of the business this enterprise.

Propostas Logísticas para o Suprimento de Estruturas Metálicas Utilizando Ferramentas Lean / Logistics proposals for the supply of metalic structures using lean tools

Este trabalho propõe uma organização para o processo de abastecimento de estruturas metálicas na construção de um prédio comercial, correlacionando a logística de suprimento do canteiro com a montagem das estruturas metálicas. A proposta foi desenvolvida a partir dos conceitos da logística empresarial e da concepção construtiva lean originário do Sistema Toyota de Produção e, posteriormente, foram aplicados em outros setores como o da construção civil. Para enfatizar problemas críticos do processo abastecimento de materiais e identificar suas soluções, foi estudada uma proposta logística para o suprimento das estruturas em uma obra localizada no Centro da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. A sincronização entre a atividade logística e o processo de montagem das estruturas seguiu a lógica lean de redução de tempos de espera, de eliminação de estoques em canteiro, como condição para a melhoria de produtividade da obra. Foi analisado o mapeamento da cadeia de valor do fluxo de materiais e operações compreendidos entre o depósito de estruturas e a obra, verificando o balanceamento de atividades de produção e os possíveis ganhos de produtividade. Os resultados obtidos evidenciariam potencial de ganho na medida em que fornece justificativas para a aplicação das atividades logísticas e das ferramentas lean na proposta de suprimento de estruturas. A proposta logística apresentada integra os fabricantes de estruturas com a obra e principalmente reduz as esperas e estoques em processo, que são considerados desperdícios na concepção construtiva lean. Conclui-se, portanto, que a logística é fator decisivo na viabilidade de qualquer processo construtivo, e que, especificamente, sob os conceitos do sistema de construção lean, reúne condições para a melhoria de produtividade do processo construtivo e por conseguinte aumento de competitividade. / In this Work is proposed the organization for structural steel supply process in the construction of a commercial building, correlating the supply logistic of the site with the assembly of the steel structures. The proposal was developed using the concepts of business logistic and of the original lean construction conception that was developed by Toyota Production system and later applied in other sections as the one of the building site. In order to emphasize critical problems of the provisioning process of materials and to identify there the main solutions, it was studied a logistic proposal for the supply of the structures in a located work downtown of Rio de Janeiro. The synchronization between the logistics activity and the structures assembly process followed the lean logic of reduction of wait time, of elimination of stocks in construction site, as condition for the improvement of the productivity of construction. It was analyzed the value stream mapping of the materials flow and operations understood between the structures warehouse and the construction site, verifying the swinging of production activities and the possible productivity gains. The obtained results would evidence potential earnings in the measure that it supplies justifications for the application of logistics activities and of the lean tools for structural steel supply. The proposal presented logistic integrates the manufacturers of structures with the work and mainly it reduces the waits and stocks in process, that wastes are considered in lean constructive conception. We can conclude that the logistic is a decisive factor in the viability of any construction process, and that, specifically, under the concepts of lean construction system, it gathers conditions for the improvement of productivity of the constructive process and consequently increase of competitiveness.

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou zvyšování produktivity pomocí metody štíhlé výroby zvané Lean. V dnešní době je potřeba udržet si přízeň zákazníka a finanční prosperitu firmy. Právě štíhlá výroba se zaměřuje na spokojenost zákazníka a na zvýšení finančního přínosu firmě, tím, že se snaží odstranit plýtvání, která se vyskytují v procesu. Lean Six Sigma je metoda, která se zaměřuje na spokojenost zákazníka (Lean) a na zdokonalování procesů (Six Sigma). Jejím cílem je zvýšit kvalitu a zároveň snížit náklady a dobu dodání. První část diplomové práce se zabývá nástroji štíhlé výroby a detailně popisuje metody, které budou použity v praxi. V praktické části diplomové práce byly využity nástroje Lean Six Sigma především metoda DMAIC, která je označována za systematický přístup k řešení problémů. Skládá se z pěti částí: definování, měření, analýza, zlepšení a kontrola.

The diploma thesis is focused on proposal of workplace modification according to the lean manufacturing methodology (DMAIC). The target is to minimize the wasting and to increase the production efficiency based on LEAN tools implementation. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the basic terms, such as primarily lean production, DMAIC, wasting. In the practical part there is at problem analysis using the DMAIC method, then the proposal for improvement is solved, that contains reduction of wasting, process of the project, timetable, costs and implantation of the solution, finally there is evaluated the benefit.

This thesis deals with the general analysis and value stream improvement. The theoretical part describes the difference between functional and procedural model of company management, mutual benefits and disadvantages of these systems. The thesis deals with the mapping process, subdivision maps and methodology of process maps creation. The work also includes software analysis for process mapping. Next section contains search of selected optimization tools and methods to improve production flow and description of the principles of controlled documentation. In the practical part is realized mapping process of bachelor studies at FEKT and map of production process at ABB switchgear.
