Probability Distribution of Rician K-Factor in Urban, Suburban and Rural Areas Using Real World Captured Data

Yes / The Rician K-factor of the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) wireless propagation channel is estimated using a moment-based method on the envelope of measured pulse data. The measurements were carried out under vehicle-to-vehicle wireless communication channel condition with car rooftop antenna heights at one end of the link and very low antenna height at the other end. Data captured from typical urban, suburban and rural areas are analyzed and the K-factor probability density function is generated for each scenario to give an insight into the V2V channel behavior. For all three areas, the majority of K values are found to be within the range of -10 to +10 dB. The K-factor distributions are close to normal with mean values of 1.8, 2.6 and 3 dB respectively for urban, suburban and rural area.

User desire for ubiquitous applications on-board a vehicle motivates the necessity for Network Mobility (NEMO) solutions for Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs). Due to the dynamic topology of VANETs, this approach incurs excessive infrastructure cost to maintain stable connectivity and support these applications. Our solution to this problem is focused on a novel NEMO-based Network Architecture where vehicles are the main network infrastructure. Within this Architecture, we present a Network Criticality-based clustering algorithm, which adapts to mobility changes to form stable self-organizing clusters of vehicles and dynamically builds on vehicle clusters to form more stable Mobile Networks. Simulation results show that the proposed method provides more stable clusters, lower handoffs and better connectivity compared to popular density-based vehicle clustering methods. In addition, they confirm the validity of the proposed Network Architecture. The proposed method is also robust to channel error and exhibits better performance when the heterogeneity of vehicles is exploited.

The dissertation investigates communication quality issues in Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) using statistical analysis, experimental measurements, simulations and modelling. The Object of research is quality characteristics of Inter-Vehicle communication, which is based on IEEE 802.11p standard. The main objective of current research is to investigate Inter-Vehicle communication quality characteristics: packet loss and delay. Additionally propose a redundant safety message transmission method and create the confidence index concept and the calculation method. To reach these objectives following tasks have to be solved: define the boundary vehicular multi-hop transmission algorithms and investigate their performance for latency times defined in different use cases; analyze a packet loss caused by obstacles on the road and define approximation equations, for use in modelling tools; create the redundant packet transmission method for the lost safety message reduction; investigate the confidence index concept in a vehicular network and propose the confidence metrics calculation method; investigate the safe following distance dependency on road conditions and compare it to reliable communication distance. The dissertation consists of introduction, 4 chapters, conclusions and references. The introduction reveals the aim of the dissertation. Concept of an enhanced V2X pedestrian collision avoidance system with a cost function–based pedestrian model

Objective: State-of-the-art collision avoidance and collision mitigation systems predict the behavior of pedestrians based on trivial models that assume a constant acceleration or velocity. New sources of sensor information—for example, smart devices such as smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, etc.—can support enhanced pedestrian behavior models. The objective of this article is the development and implementation of a V2Xpedestrian collision avoidance system that uses new information sources. Methods: A literature review of existing state-of-the-art pedestrian collision avoidance systems, pedestrian behavior models in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and traffic simulations is conducted together with an analysis of existing studies on typical pedestrian patterns in traffic. Based on this analysis, possible parameters for predicting pedestrian behavior were investigated. The results led to new requirements from which a concept was developed and implemented. Results: The analysis of typical pedestrian behavior patterns in traffic situations showed the complexity of predicting pedestrian behavior. Requirements for an improved behavior prediction were derived. A concept for a V2X collision avoidance system, based on a cost function that predicts pedestrian near future presence, and its implementation is presented. The concept presented considers several challenges such as information privacy, inaccuracies of the localization, and inaccuracies of the prediction. Conclusion: A concept for an enhanced V2X pedestrian collision avoidance system was developed and introduced. The concept uses new information sources such as smart devices to improve the prediction of the pedestrian's presence in the near future and considers challenges that come along with the usage of these information sources.

Concept and implemention of a universal UDS API for modular use in test environments for vehicle communication tests

The networking of control devices is well advanced in a modern automobile. To ensure secure communications with each other and to prevent mistakes due to communication error, protocol tests are performed at the physical and data link layer level. In a modern car the diagnosis of the electronic devices (e.g. reading/deleting fault memory entries) is done with a standardized communication protocol (UDS - Unified Diagnostic Services). Modern control units have this diagnostic capabilities to detect this communication error among others. This data is provided for a guided troubleshooting the vehicle via a defined interface. In this communication test detection mechanisms are specifically stimulated and read afterwards. In order to read or delete these entries, a diagnosis query is performed on the basis of the diagnostic protocol UDS. The diagnostic requests are currently performed with a diagnostic service of bus analysis software Vector CANoe. This service requests can be performed directly on CAN but for the diagnosis of other bus systems a software gateway is used. The maintenance required and the error rate of the software gateways is very high and should be replaced in the future. Furthermore, additional bus systems can be integrated only with great effort. Therfore the main aim of the master thesis was to develop a concept for univesal UDS API and afterwards implementation of that concept using CAPL programming for modular use in test environments for vehicle communication testing.

A Microsimulation Approach Assessing the Impact of Connected Vehicle on Work Zone Traffic Safety

Safety in transportation systems is of paramount concern to society; many improvements have been made in recent decades and yet thousands of fatalities still occur annually. Work zones in particular are areas with increased safety risks in transit networks. Advances in electronics have now allowed engineers to merge powerful computing and communication technologies with modern automotive and vehicular technology, known as connected vehicle. Connected vehicle will allow vehicles to exchange data wirelessly with each other and infrastructure to improve safety, mobility and sustainability. This thesis presents a paper that focuses on evaluating the impact of connected vehicle on work zone traffic safety. A dynamic route guidance system based on decaying average-travel-time and shortest path routing was developed and tested in a microscopic traffic simulation environment to avoid routes with work zones. To account for the unpredictable behaviour and psychology of driver’s response to information, three behaviour models, in the form of multinomial distributions, are proposed and studied in this research. The surrogate safety measure improved Time to Collision was used to gauge network safety at various market penetrations of connected vehicles. Results show that higher market penetrations of connected vehicles decrease network safety due to increased average travel distance, while the safest conditions, 5%-10% reduction in critical Time to Collision events, were observed at market penetrations of 20%-40% connected vehicle, with network safety strongly influenced by behaviour model. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

SIMULATION-BASED PERFORMANCE COMPARISONS OF GEOCAST ROUTING PROTOCOLS

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)  is the main research domain for making road transport safer and more comfortable. For the sake of increasing the benefits of ITS, projects about Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC)  system have been proposed to make communications among vehicles possible, to exchange traffic information and avoid accidents. In order to create communication network among vehicles or between vehicles and infrastructure,  Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) has been proposed. Many applications in VANETs need to send messages to vehicles within a specific geographic region. This behavior is called geocast and this specific geographic region is called the Zone of Relevance (ZOR). Some routing protocols which are related to Geocast have been proposed in literature for VANETs. So it is significant to evaluate and compare the performance of these known Geocast routing protocols. In this thesis, categories of the routing protocols, as well as communication forwarding schemes are introduced. The routing protocols in VANETs are also summarized and compared. In order to evaluate the performance of these protocols, the evaluation methods are proposed and then a Geocast routing simulator is designed and used to simulate the Geocast network environment and several Geocast routing protocols.

Modélisation et validation expérimentale de concept de Détection Vidéo Coopérative destiné à un système stéréo anticollision inter-véhicule / Modeling and experimental validation of the concept of Cooperative Video Detection for a stereo inter-vehicle collision system

Le travail de cette thèse a été consacré au développement d’une nouvelle méthode de détection pour un système anticollision par la mesure de trajectographie, ce qui pourrait contribuer aux systèmes d’aide à la conduite. Pour obtenir une haute probabilité de détection, nous avons choisi la solution de vidéo stéréoscopique coopérative : la coopération entre véhicules rend la détection plus facile et fiable. Il y a deux participants dans le système : les véhicules « porteurs du système » aussi bien que les « suiveurs », sont équipés de caméras stéréoscopiques, c’est à dire de deux capteurs d’image, appartenant à des familles technologique à haute cadence; les véhicules « cibles » sont équipés des feux à Leds modulés, dont la fréquence de modulation est déjà connue par les véhicules « suiveurs ». Après filtrage dans l’espace temporel, le système ne détecte que des signaux issus des feux modulés, ce qui réduit fortement l’information à traiter par rapport aux calculs de trajectographie traditionnels. La détection de feux modulés est donc réalisée par le filtrage par traitement numérique des images, qui est adapté à la fréquence de modulation recherchée. Pour cela, nous avons proposé 3 types de filtres adaptés à la fréquence de modulation et conçus de façon à rejeter au mieux les signaux de fond.Pour évaluer les performances tant en détection qu’en réjection des fausses alarmes, nous avons d’abord effectué des simulations numériques en prenant en compte des signaux artificiels, puis des calculs sur vrais signaux obtenus dans les expérimentations avec véhicule d’essai statique, puis roulant. Les roulages étaient de différentes vitesses, de 30km/h jusqu’à 100km/h, ce qui nous a permis d’analyser le signal issu du feu ainsi que le comportement de nos filtres à des vitesses angulaires de feu nulles, faibles ou élevées. Le résultat de ces expérimentations montre que le filtrage permet de détecter les feux à Leds de type DRL jusqu’à 140m sans aucune fausse détection sur le fond. Ces expérimentations sont une étape essentielle pour définir de façon plus précise un tel système, en particulier dans le choix du seuil. Nous avons aussi évalué des technologies qui peuvent améliorer la performance du système, mais qui ne sont pas encore prêtes à industrialiser. Par exemple, les « rétines » artificielles nous permettent d’utiliser les filtres analogiques intégrés, et ainsi de réduire leurs bandes passantes. / This thesis was devoted to the development of a new detection method for vehicular collision avoidance system based on trajectory measurement, which could contribute to driver assistance systems.In order to obtain high detection probability, we have chosen the cooperative stereoscopic video solution: the cooperation between vehicles makes it easier and more reliable when they aim to detect each other. There are two participants in the system: the “system carriers" vehicles, or the " followers" are equipped with stereoscopic cameras (two image sensors), who belong to high speed technology families; the "targets" vehicles are equipped with modulated LED lights, with the modulation frequency being already known by the "followers". After space-time filtering, the system detects the signals emitted bymodulated lights sources, which greatly reduces the amount of information to be processed comparing to traditional trajectory calculations methods. The detection of modulated light is achieved by filtering based on digital image processing, which is adapted to the desired modulation frequency. We have proposed three types of filters suitable for detecting the modulation at this frequency and at the same time for rejecting the background as well as possible.In order to be able to evaluate the performances of both detecting signals and rejecting false alarms, we first performed numerical simulations based on the model signals, then calculations on real signals acquired in static and driving experiments. The tested speeds were from 30km/h up to 100km/h, which allowed us to analyze the signals emitted from vehicle lights as well as the behavior of our filters under different angular velocities of the lights (zero, low and high). The result of these experiments showed that our method of filtering could detect LED-type DRL lights up to 140m without any false alarm. This is essential to define more precisely the values of thresholds of such systems. We have also evaluated technologies that are possible to improve system performance in the future, which are not yet ready to be used in industry productions. For example, artificial "retinas" could allow us to integrate analog filters in the chips, and thus to reduce bandwidth of the filters.
