Determinants of Venture Capital Investments : A panel data analysis across regions in the United Kingdom

Karim, Martia January 2018 (has links)
Venture Capital is an important theme in economic research as a growing intermediate in the financing of new or growing young firms. In Europe, it is the United Kingdom that is the leading country with the highest amount of venture capital activity. However, there is a wide spatial distribution of venture capital across the regions of the United Kingdom where London and the South East alone pulled nearly 60% of venture capital in 2013. This paper focuses on a cross-regional study with the selected regions of the United Kingdom: Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The purpose to investigate the relationship between economic growth, research & development expenditure, and population density with total venture capital investments during the time period 2006 – 2016. The aim is to contribute to existing literature on determinants of venture capital with evidence from the United Kingdom. Using a fixed effect model, we can establish a positive relationship between population density and total venture capital invested. Economic growth and gross expenditure on research & development did not yield any significant result.

This is a timely matter since in the past years there has been a sudden eruption of foreign VC involvement in Brazil. Based on the actionable framework by Khanna and Palpeu (2010) we conducted quantitative as well as qualitative research with two sets of interview partners in a two-phase analysis. We interviewed experts from VC firms, foreign VC firms based in Brazil and perspective VC firms that are looking to come to Brazil. We started with the former, derived lessons learned and analyzed how they affect the latter in reaching a decision. As we expected we found that depending on the industry that ventures are in, institutional voids can either pose an opportunity or a threat and hence attract or push away potential VC firms entering Brazil. Opportunities exist especially when exploiting institutional voids, for example through ventures in the marketplace efficiency. Threats are posed by investments in for instance hard infrastructure, where the economic, political and judicial systems as well as corruption and bureaucracy play demanding roles.

Due to the difficulties of estimating the value of a company through the assumptions made, when it is a start-up, the lack of historical and market evidence, the work becomes even more subjective. The importance of having a more accurate method and consider the many variables inherent in a company that proposes to act in an untapped market and innovate to solve an identified problem is essential to encourage entrepreneurship, a key issue to boost an economy. A case study was prepared with a Brazilian start-up, which operates in the food industry, with more than four years of operation and has received investment from angel investors and venture capital fund. Through technology, the company seek to innovate in the gastronomical experience of the customer and partner restaurants. The company's board released the company's internal data and future projections. The methodology of discounted cash flow was applied to estimate the value of the start-up and then was applied the real option methodology by adding an expansion option and a drop one to estimate another value for the company in various scenarios with different volatilities. The result shows a considerable difference between the methodology, in which the method of real options increases the company's value in all scenarios.

This thesis aims to propose a patento-scientometric approach for evaluation of innovative projects by venture capital funds. This study highlights the importance of such investments in the development of technology-based firms and their positive impacts on the economic development of regions and countries. However, it is also observed that the managers of venture capital funds find it difficult to objectify the evaluation of investment proposals. Therefore, it is structured in five chapters, three of which correspond to scientific articles submitted in the last six months to review for publication in national and international journals of significant recognition in this research area. The other two chapters are the introduction and meta-conclusion. Method: In the first phase, which involves Chapters 2 and 3, we selected two cases of investees by Criatec Fund for the construction of scientometric and patentometric indicators and evaluating the potential of these technologies to understanding the analyzed upon its review; in the second phase, which involves Chapter 4, we performed a comparative analysis of five companies considering scientometric and patentometric indicators built in the first phase, grouped by nonfinancial criteria (technology, market, divestment and team) analysis of investment proposals. Results: concludes that scientometrics and patentometrics indicators, in addition to helping the understanding aspects of the non-financial criteria related in this study (technology, market, divestment and team), contribute to building a method of prioritizing venture capital investment. The methodology can be useful tools for the selection process of projects by venture capitalists, by incorporating a greater knowledge about the dynamics of production in science and technology related to the product of the companies under review, and, in a comparative analysis, able to support the process of choosing between several projects.
