Music therapy groups for adolescents in oncology inpatient wards : the affordances of vocal improvisation for the expression of social resilienceBurger, Leigh-Ann January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is a qualitative study of how vocal improvisation within music therapy groups may afford the construction of social resilience for in-patient adolescents in oncology wards. The study was conducted at the Pediatric Oncology Unit at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria. The case study involved six daily group music therapy sessions, with four to eight participants. The primary music therapy technique was vocal improvisation to assess how the participants perform themselves as resilient (or not). Excerpts of video recordings were analyzed through Gee’s (2005) suggestion for discourse analysis. Session notes were written as an additional data source to contextualize the excerpts. Through discourse analysis, four primary discourses were identified: participant as patient, participant as adolescent, cultural adolescent, and participant as Hip-hop musician. These enabled the participants to explore their performance of selves in various ways. It was concluded that vocal improvisation in group music therapy enabled the expression of lack of resilience, as it received those feeling less resilient and provided them with safety and containment. It also offered the participants a means of instant coping within the various discourses that were identified. Vocal improvisation in this context also afforded the participants a space to adapt to their challenges as they explored various types of participation by learning from past experiences/ways of being, and adjust accordingly. Denna uppsats innefattar en kvalitativ studie med en introspektiv metod (Frostling-Henningsson, 2017), en undersökning av hur ett arbete med röstklanger kan användas som verktyg inom improvisation och gestaltning. Undersökningen utförs med grund i Nadine Georges metod i klangbildning och utifrån den analyserar jag sedan hur mina improvisationer påverkas av ett klangligt fokus, samt hur det kan gynna ett förmedlande av känsla och budskap (George 2013). Då rösten är något tydligt kopplat till känslouttryck i vår vardag går jag in på hur tonutformningen, även utan ord i en ordlös vokalimprovisation, kan påverka uppfattningen av sinnesstämning.

L’auteur centre sa recherche sur la médiation sonore avec des enfants présentant des troubles psychotiques dans le cadre d’une pratique clinique groupale.La production de musique improvisée et l’improvisation vocale sont utilisées en tant que voies d’accès à l’originaire et à l’inconscient afin de favoriser la symbolisation.Complétée par une recherche théorique et des observations cliniques concernant l’émission de la voix archaïque chez nouveaux-nés et bébés, cette élaboration prend appui sur l’analyse du transfert-contre-transfert, la chaîne associative et les référentiels psychanalytiques. L’ensemble des analyses et observations montre que chez l’enfant présentant des troubles psychotiques, la pratique de la médiation sonore en groupe utilisant la technique de l’improvisation vocale, permet la mobilisation et l’harmonisation de séquences traumatiques originaires conduisant à une modification de la relation d’objet et inaugurant une dynamique évolutive accrue. / The author centers his research on sound mediation with children presenting psychotic disorders within the framework of clinical group practice.

Completed by theoretical research and clinical observations concerning the emission of the archaic voice to new-borns and babies, this elaboration is supported by the analysis of the transference-counter-transference, the as-sociative channel and psychoanalytical system of reference.
All the analyses and the obser-vations show that with children presenting psychotic disorders, the practice of group sound mediation using the technique of vocal improvisation, allows the mobilization and the harmo-nization of primary psychic processus traumatic sequences leading to a modification of the relation to object and initiating greater evolutionary dynamics.
