Challenges while moving towards Warehouse AutomationVarghese, Joseph, Saju, Sony January 2021 (has links)
Currently, customers are pushing companies by demanding high quality, customized products, reduced lead time, and reliable delivery. To provide such high customer sat-isfaction, companies have to rely on third-party logistics and warehouse operations. The variety of products, combined with shorter delivery times makes warehouse operations even more complex. To manage these complexities, warehouses are turning to "auto-mation technologies" that provide a competitive edge in the market by lowering costs and improving productivity in all operations, throughout the shop floor. This project aimed to explore how warehouses can implement automation successfully by analysing the challenges that arise with the automation approach. The project will be limited to the planning phase of the automation approach. Based on the aim, two research ques-tions were defined. The first one concerns identifying the challenges that arise when a warehouse is becoming automated, while the second one concerns, finding solutions that mitigate these challenges. To fulfill the purpose, a single case study was conducted in the warehouse of a logistic company in Jönköping. The case study method consisted of interviews and observations as primary data collection techniques. In total thirteen challenges were identified in the literature, out of which ten were found at the case company. The identified challenges were classified into the organisational, technolog-ical, and people factors. In order to mitigate the challenges, suggestions were provided to the case company. The thesis concludes that even though automation is a good strat-egy for improving production activities, it comes with several challenges within organ-isational, technological, and people dimensions. Moreover, the study will be useful, for researchers and practitioners working in warehouse automation to identify and solve challenges while automating the facility

Data Cleaning: Problems and Current ApproachesRahm, Erhard, Do, Hong Hai 04 February 2019 (has links)
We classify data quality problems that are addressed by data cleaning and provide an overview of the main solution approaches. Data cleaning is especially required when integrating heterogeneous data sources and should be addressed together with schema-related data transformations. In data warehouses, data cleaning is a major part of the so-called ETL process. We also discuss current tool support for data cleaning.

Energi- och kostnadseffektiva klimatskal : För lager-, industri- och kontorsbyggnaderAderskog, Mikael, Hoff, Christopher January 2013 (has links)
A study to optimize insulation thickness for stock-, industrial- and office-buildings for external walls and roof in an economical perspective has been conducted on behalf of DynaMate. DynaMate’s role is to maintain all Scania’s buildings. Analysis has also included other parts of the building envelope, such as windows, exterior doors and industrial doors. In this thesis, three different types of exterior wall constructions has been investigated, these are a sandwich design consisting of sheet metal and a another one consisting of concrete, as well as a wall of concrete with a coating of plasters. Furthermore, two types of roof structures have been studied, these are TRP-sheets and a concrete structure, both of which are externally isolated. For all types of building envelopes, different standard thicknesses of insulation have been used and the U-value of the windows has been varied. To calculate the energy needed for the different kinds of buildings, the program IDA Indoor Climate and Energy has been used. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis of the air tightness has been implemented for the building envelope. Based on the program results LCC (Life-cycle cost) calculations have been carried out for all combinations, thus be able to form an idea of the combination and what kind of structure that is most economically tenable. A thermograph study was conducted in an existing warehouse at Scania. Observations show that the connection between the sandwich material of sheet metal and the foundation wall is flawed as this has a much lower thermal resistance compared to other parts of the building envelope. An alternative connection was developed which reduces the heat loss to one-fifth of the initial connection. An analysis regarding the companies approach to the vapour barrier in roof structures for industrial buildings has been investigated from a moisture standpoint. The analysis shows that without a functioning vapour barrier the moisture content in the construction increases over time, which leads to increased heating costs. The conclusion of this study shows that a reduction of insulation thickness for all types of studied buildings is more economically tenable than increasing the thickness. This is mainly due to the high cost of capital that the company uses for these investments. This means that any savings on cooling and heating costs very quickly is overthrown by the interest rate of the additional cost of the investment.

The current understanding of lean warehousing principles in a third party logistic provider in South AfricaSwart, Alexander Daniël January 2016 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Engineering, October 2015 / A single case study of a major third party logistics provider (3PL) in South Africa was completed for this research. A total of four warehouses, including 43 workers partook in the study.
The primary objective of this research was to determine how well employees within the warehousing industry understand Lean principles, and to illustrate the gap in Lean knowledge between the employment levels, i.e. Managers, Supervisors and Material Handlers. Group-administered questionnaires were used as the principle means of gathering data. All participants for each respective warehouse were present in a “classroom” format during completion of the questionnaires. The author was also present during all sessions to ensure consistency and to clarify any questions that participants had.
The questionnaire tested each participant’s understanding with regards to seven key Lean principles in warehousing. These seven principles were identified from previous research on Lean within warehousing. The results gathered from the questionnaires were then validated using semi-structured follow-up interviews.
It was found that a real gap in Lean knowledge exists between Managers and Material Handlers (shop-floor workers). Managers understand the key Lean principles within warehousing, as well as the importance thereof. While the employees actually working on the floor do not. The main reasons for this are due to a lack of suitable training and knowledge sharing.
Based on the seven key Lean warehousing principles, the following were identified in the study as the most important ones to focus on: Continuous Improvement and Visual Management. These are believed to be basics in warehousing. However, employees still seem to struggle with the true understanding and significance thereof. It is imperative that the understanding of Lean principles and the involvement of management exist when striving to be successful with Lean. The gaps in Lean knowledge have been identified and laid out in this report. The reasons for each gap have also been investigated and discussed in detail.
Finally, pertinent areas have been highlighted to assist with the development of Lean training material. This will ensure that the current gap of Lean understanding among warehousing employees is closed.

An Approach to Data-Based Standardization of Automatic Miniload WarehousesRief, Jona I., Fottner, Johannes 14 June 2023 (has links)
Automatic miniload warehouses with stacker cranes are used in intralogistics processes to decouple demand from supply. However, these systems are highly complex, requiring an extensive planning phase. By identifying the commonalities among these warehouses, our research presents an approach to reduce the complexity of the planning process of automatic miniload warehouses with stacker cranes.

The Application of Expert Systems to Automated Storage and RetrievalMcDonald, Robert E. 01 January 1986 (has links) (PDF)
This report discusses the major functions, decisions, and strategies of automated storage and retrieval systems (AR/RS). The report surveys the essential features of expert systems and discusses how they can be applied in automated warehousing environments. A blackboard expert system architecture was examined and found to be a flexible and responsive control system for automated warehousing applications. A simple AR/RS expert system was constructed using an expert system software package. A warehousing simulation was performed which compared the expert system’s performance to a typical AR/RS control system. The expert system produced increased efficiency of operation because of the intelligent rules programmed into the system.
