The Watch Tower movement in south central Africa, 1908-1945

Cross, Sholto January 1973 (has links)
The Watch Tower movement was a millennial social movement which was popular in Nyasaland, Southern and Northern Rhodesia, and the Belgian Congo, and in parts of the countries bordering these territories, between the two world wars. It derived its doctrine initially from the writings of Charles Russell, the founder of one of the largest sects of the twentieth century, the Jehovah's Witnesses. The African Watch Tower however was largely independent of the Jehovah's Witnesses, although this body attempted to establish its control in central Africa, and its ideology and organisation changed and developed in accordance with local conditions. While some similarities in the conditions of rapid urbanisation which surrounded the origins of the Jehovah's Witnesses in America, and the Watch Tower in Africa, may be discerned, its political and historical role was a very different one. Spread by labour migrants moving between employment centres and from the village to the urban compound, the Watch Tower contributed to the new forms of association which enabled workers to protest against their conditions of employment, and assisted in spreading a pan-Africanist consciousness which was a significant current in the development of anti-colonial nationalism. It was not only an urban movement, but also selectively influenced the countryside, where external factors and the nature of local social organisations were favourable. It spread rapidly, in a wide variety of forms, and with little formality regarding who was or was not a member, but retained a central core of ideas and an organisational structure, which allows the movement to be treated as a unity.

A Pilot Study of the Functionality of the Apple Watch 6 SeriesTM and its Counterparts in the Medical Engineering Field

Defte, André, Sjödin, Johan January 2022 (has links)
Apple WatchTM huserar funktionaliteter inom medicinteknik. / The Apple WatchTM has functionalities related to the field of medical technology. This is a degree project in medical engineering that raises the question how adequate measurements it can acquire, in relation to a corresponding medical device. The Apple WatchTM can identify R waves in ECG very well and thereby also atrial fibrillation. In relation to pulse oximeters, oxygen saturation is given a few percentage points too high and the compliance is somewhat rigid. Apple WatchTM measures heart rate well at higher heart rates, but has severely limited accuracy and has poorer compliance when measuring at rest. The tests of this work shows that the Apple WatchTM should not be used as a tool for making any medical diagnosis, but the amount of data and test subjects were not sufficient enough to make it statistically significant.

Using PROC GLIMMIX to Analyze the Animal Watch, a Web-Based Tutoring System for Algebra Readiness

Barbu, Otilia C. January 2012 (has links)
In this study, I investigated how proficiently seventh-grade students enrolled in two Southwestern schools solve algebra word problems. I analyzed various factors that could affect this proficiency and explored the differences between English Learners (ELs) and native English Primary students (EPs). I collected the data as part of the Animal Watch project, a computer-based initiative designed to improve the mathematical skills of children from grades 5-8 in the Southwest. A sample of 86 students (26 ELs and 60 EPs), clustered in four different classes, was used for this project. A Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) approach with the GLIMMIX procedure in SAS 9.3 showed that students from the classes that had a higher percentage of EL students performed better than those in the classes where the EL concentration was lower. Classes with more EL males were better at learning mathematics than classes with more EP females. The results also indicated: (a) a positive correlation between the students' ability to solve algebra word problems on their first attempt and their success ratio in solving all problems, and (b) a negative correlation between the percentage of problems solved correctly and those considered too hard from the very beginning. I conclude my dissertation by making specific recommendations for further research.

Types of Love in Selected Plays by Lillian Hellman

Beck-Horn, Debrah A. 08 1900 (has links)
This study analyzed The Children's Hour, The Little Foxes, Watch on the Rhine, Toys in the Attic in terms of the forms of human love delineated by Erich Fromm in The Art of Loving. The motives and actions of one or more principal characters and their dramatic situations were studied. It was discovered that, in the plays that were examined, each character responded to his or her situation in a loving or a hateful manner and that these choices with regard to love provided the dramatic matrix of the play.

精品手錶O2O定製之創新經營模式 / An Innovative Model of High End Watch O2O Customization

Chen, Kaixiang Unknown Date (has links)
High-end products customization is becoming a trend in China. Currently most of the customization service is offline. Customers will be confronted with some problems, such as the authenticity of customized products, exclusivity and the process of ongoing customization. This research proposed a high-end O2O(ONLINE TO OFFLINE) customization platform in order to solve these problems. By integrating online and offline service, customers can find out the exclusivity of their orders, follow the customization process and get honored experience. Due to the length limitation of this thesis, this research will theme on an innovative model for high-end customized watch. This model can be applied to other customized products afterwards. In order to find out feasible business model, this research sorts out the present supply-demand situation, referring to competitors’ customized products, coming up with a direction of combining modularization and free customization. Moreover, by collecting and analyzing second hand data and interviewing, demand condition of the whole market and features of demand are found out. In the end, after referring to the opinions of industry experts, this research brings forward an O2O customization model, including service workflow, platform infrastructure, IP transaction institution and profiting mechanism.

Nilsson, Fredrik, Steinvall, Hjalmar January 2019 (has links)

Knowledge and global advocacy : a sociological study of INGO practitioners and their epistemic limits

Markland, Alistair January 2018 (has links)
This doctoral research project conducts a political sociology of knowledge of non-governmental actors engaged in advocating and reporting on issues relating to conflict and human rights. It engages the following research question: what are the limits of knowledge produced by non-governmental advocates? This question is applied to empirical case studies looking at, firstly, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the International Crisis Group, and secondly, a network of global activists working on post-war Sri Lanka (2010-2014). Applying a Bourdieusian sociological framework, the thesis argues that professional advocates' epistemic practices are shaped by an array of socio-political dependencies. Contrasting with past applications of Bourdieu to International Relations, this thesis reveals contextually-specific dependencies through multiple levels and scales of analysis. At the organisational level, these dependencies manifest through advocacy NGOs' market-like relations with their targeted consumers, as well as their relations with rival knowledge producers. At the level of the human practitioner, it is shown how leading advocacy NGOs are reliant upon a relatively narrow labour market, consisting of practitioners who share a strong dispositional affinity with their consumers. Studying a smaller group of global advocates working on post-war Sri Lanka, the thesis also demonstrates how symbiotic relations between NGO practitioners and leading policy stakeholders had a structuring effect on advocates' network relations, as well as stimulating a deference to a dominant policy discourse of 'liberal peace'. Shifting the attention to advocates' extraction of knowledge from its proximal contexts, this thesis also examines the influence of advocates' localised dependencies. In the case of post-war Sri Lanka, it is shown how foreign advocates' knowledge is informed by a limited set of domestic actors, primarily encompassing the country's liberal elites. Overall, these dependencies are argued to place significant constraints on knowledge generated in advocacy contexts - limits that differ to other modes of knowledge production.

Hellström, Inez January 2015 (has links)
After decades of repression and segregation South Africa managed to break free from the Apartheid era. The year was 1994 when democracy started to prevail in South Africa. That year a truth commission was created in the country to deal with the human rights violations of apartheid. This thesis will analyze the truth commission’s management through three perspectives. These perspectives are the Truth Commission’s, a report by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch and lastly a theory by Samuel Huntington. The analysis is designed as a case study of the truth commission’s work. This thesis describes the commissions work and the challenges that followed. The purpose of the thesis is to describe and analyze some of the different approaches on South Africa’s process of reconciliation. This has been done to see if there is parallels or possible contradictions between the perspectives and to highlight challenges. The result shows that the perspectives do have split opinions about the commissions work. The Truth Commission aims to bring the country forward in a fast pace, while Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch stands more critical on how the commission chooses to go about. Clear parallels are also shown between Huntingtons theory and the reality of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

L'approche Watch, Wait and Wonder et la fonction réflexive parentale

Rossignol, Annie January 2013 (has links)
