A usability study of a website prototype designed to be responsive to screen size

Rundgren, Sophie January 2014 (has links)
This paper describes a usability study of a responsive website prototype. A heuristic evaluation was conducted with three evaluators with a background in HCI, and user tests with four potential users were conducted as a control method to test the relevance of the heuristic evaluation result. The study showed that the website prototype failed the visibility of system status, user control and freedom and error prevention heuristics in the heuristic evaluation. However, the users responses contradict that result by showing that the users had no problems with those areas in the user tests. In fact, the users detected no usability problems at all. This could mean that those heuristics are not relevant for a responsive Web 2.0 site and needs to be removed when conducting a heuristic evaluation of a responsive website in the future, and that designing for responsiveness leads to higher usability. This study shows some indications but more testing needs to be done, preferably on several fully developed responsive websites, to be able to make any real conclusions about the usability of a responsive website and the relevance of the heuristics used in this study.

From static to responsive web design : How new web technology finds its way to companies

Rask, Matilda, Carlstedt, Fanny January 2012 (has links)
The IT industry is constantly evolving and requires everyone working with website development to be updated on the latest methods. The web grows larger every day, and more visits are carried out by mobile devices. It is more important than ever for companies to have updated and functional pages that can be used on different platforms. We want to find out how common it is for IT departments and web agencies to embrace the newest technology and also what it takes to get them to move from one technology to another. Responsive web design is a constantly growing new technique that helps web developers developing for different platforms. In this paper we have chosen to use responsive web design as an example in our research on how new technology is implemented in different companies.

Usage of HTML5 as the basis for a multi-platform client solution

Shao, Da January 2012 (has links)
Technologies for how a rich user interaction can be delivered have changed a lot during the last 10 years. From a world where these types of user interfaces predominately was built as desktop applications like Windows Applications over to web technologies using Java Applets, Flash, Silverlight, Android, iOS etc. The problem though has been the vast amount of different technologies with no or limited connections between them. This has so far been a problem for application developers since essentially no code can be reused between the different platforms but also that some of them are not native – some kind of runtime platform needs to be installed (Flash, Silverlight, Java…). With the introduction of the emerging standard of HTML5 it seems that there is finally a technology that is getting more widely used by most of the platform suppliers.  This Master Thesis aims to prove the HTML5 can be used to build clients for MediusFlow. The point is to investigate if it’s possible to implement all the pages of frontend on different platforms by using idea like Responsive Web Design with HTML5.The showcase will be to build a complete app for MediusFlow on the iPad platform based on HTML5. In addition the interface must be verified on at least one additional platform, most probably Internet Explorer 10.

Nilsson, Josefine, Brenander, Sofia January 2015 (has links)
Purpose – A user-friendly website is a and o for companies given today's technology and internet usage. It's about creating a website that visitors of different ages and with different technology experience easily can use and take part of. The purpose of this thesis is to find out how a web site to a company in the private sector that focuses on health and wellbeing can be designed so that the visitors can find the information they are looking for without encountering problems. Method – To achieve this, a survey was conducted and also interviews with people who work with user experience on the web, where an analysis part was performed pursuant to the thinking aloud method, and usability testing using the thinking aloud method. Findings – Using the method choices, the conclusion came forward that what is important to have in mind when designing a user-friendly website, is that the navigation system should be easily understandable, the structure and the amount of information on the site should make the site readable, and also the typography and the contrast between the colors are supposed to make it easier for the visitor to navigate on the website. Limitations – This work focuses exclusively on companies that focus on health and wellbeing in Jönköping, furthermore the work is all about user experience on the web and how visitors will be able to find important information on the website / Syfte – En användarvänlig webbplats är a och o för företag med tanke på dagens teknikutveckling och internetanvändning.

Lampi, Rebecca January 2016 (has links)
This paper is about the development of a new website for the production company A26 Media, which feels more dynamic than the current website. My clients wanted to investigate how we could challenge the typical design principles and whether we could break free from them. Before I developed the website, there was a PACT-analysis to find out who visited the site and why. When the finished site had been developed, I tested it by showing the site to two people before it could be evaluated. The results show that it’s difficult to challenge and break the design principles without the website being obscure and difficult to use. But a finished website was delivered that met the client’s requirements.

Applikationsutveckling i Responsive Web Design / Development in Responsive Web Design

Sundqvist, Tobias, Wåhlander, Christoffer January 2013 (has links)
Responsive Web Design (RWD) has quickly moved from a concept to one of the biggest trends within WebDevelopment. Today it is close to implied that new Websites should use the technique RWD. Even so the techniquedo not cover all problems the developers are facing today when it comes to the flora of mobile devices. Within this thesis we are digging deeper into the technique, both in practice and theory, in order to make conclusionson its advantages and disadvantages. This we fulfilled by creating both an application platform and a first application(to handle vacation requests) for the company Sigma AB, there one of basic requirements were that everythingdeveloped could be used anywhere. From our results we are giving recommendations for when you should use RWD and when you should considerother techniques like Native- or HTML5 applications.

SaaS ve web designu / SaaS in Web Design

Míka, Filip January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is aimed to evaluate if the current SaaS market is able to meet functional re-quirements of web design in order to appropriately support web design's activities. The theoretical part introduces the web design model which describes web design's functional requirements. The next section presents a research concept that describes model assessment (i.e. solutions delivered as SaaS that support web design) and evaluation process. The results show that the current SaaS market is able to meet the requirements of web design in areas where SaaS solutions are able to provide an essential added value to customers in comparison to on-premise software.

A Comparison of Load-time Performance Between Client- and Server-based Responsive Web Design

Manczak, Krystian January 2021 (has links)
Before Responsive Web Design (RWD) it was common to create fixed-width websites. In recent years the standard way of creating responsive websites is by some of the fundamental aspects of RWD on the client-side. But can it be worth using RWD with components sent from a server by detecting the device and send component-specific material as to lessen some of the resources of the page? Tests have been made for this purpose with Google Lighthouse’s performance audits in mobile and desktop mode between four almost identical websites. These tests measures which website will receive better load-time performance results viewed from an emulated smartphone with a 3G/4G connection (mobile) and an emulated desktop PC with a 10 Mbps of connection (desktop). Each website consists of two pages, one with lesser resources (< 1 MB, known as index.html), the other with larger resources (24.3 MB, known as gallery.html). All four websites are responsive and built after the main pillars of RWD. Two websites does not have any optimization while two websites have added image optimization. One of the two websites in each category, image-optimized and unoptimized, is a server-based component website. This means, it will use asynchronous calls to a server to get specific components for the specific viewport.  In the tests performed, between the unoptimized websites, one client-based (CRWDu), the other server-based (SRWDu), on index.html, the CRWDu website scored best in mobile and got a slightly better result in desktop mode. On gallery.html, the SRWDu website received the best results in both modes, mobile and desktop. Between the image-optimized websites, one client-based (CRWDo), the other server-based (SRWDo), the CRWDo website on index.html, had a slightly better result in mobile and a worse result in desktop mode. On gallery.html, the SRWDo website had a much better result in both mobile and desktop mode.

Raspberry Pi Based Vision System for Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Detection

Mahammad, Sarfaraz Ahmad, Sushma, Vendrapu January 2020 (has links)
Background: The main purpose of this research is to design and develop a cost-effective system for detection of Foreign Object Debris (FOD), dedicated to airports. FOD detection has been a significant problem at airports as it can cause damage to aircraft. Developing such a device to detect FOD may require complicated hardware and software structures. The proposed solution is based on a computer vision system, which comprises of flexible off the shelf components such as a Raspberry Pi and Camera Module, allowing the simplistic and efficient way to detect FOD. Methods: The solution to this research is achieved through User-centered design, which implies to design a system solution suitably and efficiently. The system solution specifications, objectives and limitations are derived from this User-centered design. The possible technologies are concluded from the required functionalities and constraints to obtain a real-time efficient FOD detection system. Results: The results are obtained using background subtraction for FOD detection and implementation of SSD (single-shot multi-box detector) model for FOD classification. The performance evaluation of the system is analysed by testing the system to detect FOD of different size for different distances. The web design is also implemented to notify the user in real-time when there is an occurrence of FOD. Conclusions: We concluded that the background subtraction and SSD model are the most suitable algorithms for the solution design with Raspberry Pi to detect FOD in a real-time system. The system performs in real-time, giving the efficiency of 84% for detecting medium-sized FOD such as persons at a distance of 75 meters and 72% efficiency for detecting large-sized FOD such as cars at a distance of 125 meters, and the average frame per second (fps) that is the system ’s performance in recording and processing frames of the area required to detect FOD is 0.95.

Ek, Mikael, Sigrid, Jönsson January 2022 (has links)
There are over 200 million active websites for just over 5 billion users. As the internet hasgrown and technological development has progressed greatly, users have become more pickyabout the content of a website. Each time a user visits a website, the user makes a quickevaluation of the website to decide if they want to stay on the page or leave it at once. The aim of this study is to take a closer look at how web design affects the user's choice tostay on a website or not. The study focuses on how the choice of font, image and color affectsthe user's desire to stay on the website based on trustworthiness and usability. To answer the research questions, a survey was sent out where the participants had to answerthe perceived trustworthiness and usability based on three design aspects, font, image andcolor and see how this affects the participants' willingness to stay on the website. The results show that all three design principles influenced the user's willingness to stay onthe website. The design elements that were examined influenced the user's willingness to stayon the website in the following order from least to greatest impact: font, color, image. In summary, the study shows that a user's tendency to stay on a website can increase if thedesign is satisfactory and well thought out.
