Simulating and prototyping software defined networking (SDN) using Mininet approach to optimise host communication in realistic programmable networking environmentZulu, Lindinkosi Lethukuthula 11 1900 (has links)
In this project, two tests were performed. On the first test, Mininet-WiFi was used to simulate a
Software Defined Network to demonstrate Mininet-WiFi’ s ability to be used as the Software
Defined Network emulator which can also be integrated to the existing network using a Network
Virtualized Function (NVF). A typical organization’s computer network was simulated which
consisted of a website hosted on the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) virtual machine, and
an F5 application delivery controller (ADC) which provided load balancing of requests sent to the
web applications. A website page request was sent from the virtual stations inside Mininet-WiFi.
The request was received by the application delivery controller, which then used round robin
technique to send the request to one of the web servers on the LAMP virtual machine. The web
server then returned the requested website to the requesting virtual stations using the simulated
virtual network. The significance of these results is that it presents Mininet-WiFi as an emulator,
which can be integrated into a real programmable networking environment offering a portable,
cost effective and easily deployable testing network, which can be run on a single computer. These
results are also beneficial to modern network deployments as the live network devices can also
communicate with the testing environment for the data center, cloud and mobile provides.
On the second test, a Software Defined Network was created in Mininet using python script. An
external interface was added to enable communication with the network outside of Mininet. The
amazon web services elastic computing cloud was used to host an OpenDaylight controller. This
controller is used as a control plane device for the virtual switch within Mininet. In order to test
the network, a webserver hosted on the Emulated Virtual Environment – Next Generation (EVENG)
software is connected to Mininet. EVE-NG is the Emulated Virtual Environment for
networking. It provides tools to be able to model virtual devices and interconnect them with other
virtual or physical devices. The OpenDaylight controller was able to create the flows to facilitate
communication between the hosts in Mininet and the webserver in the real-life network. / Electrical and Mining Engineering / M. Tech. (Electrical Engineering)

Data-Grey-BoxWeb Services in Data-Centric EnvironmentsLehner, Wolfgang, Habich, Dirk, Preissler, Steffen, Richly, Sebastian, Assmann, Uwe, Grasselt, Mike, Maier, Albert 27 May 2022 (has links)
In data-centric environments, for example, in the field of scientific computing, the transmission of large amount of structured data to Web services is required. In service-oriented environments (SOA), the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) is commonly used as the main transport protocol. However, the resulting 'by value' data transmission approach is not efficiently applicable in data-centric environments. One challenging bottleneck of SOAP arises from the XML serialization and deserialization when processing large SOAP messages. In this paper, we present an extended Web service framework which explicitly considers the data aspects of functional Web services. Aside from the possibility to integrate specialized data transfer methods in SOA, this framework allows the efficient and scalable data handling and processing within Web services. In this case, we combine the advantages of the functional perspective (SOA) and the data perspective to efficiently support data-centric environments.

Data-aware SOA for Gene Expression Analysis ProcessesLehner, Wolfgang, Habich, Dirk, Richly, Sebastian, Assmann, Uwe, Grasselt, Mike, Maier, Albert, Pilarsky, Christian 11 May 2022 (has links)
In the context of genome research, the method of gene expression analysis has been used for several years. Related microarray experiments are conducted all over the world, and consequently, a vast amount of microarray data sets are produced. Having access to this variety of repositories, researchers would like to incorporate this data in their analyses processes to increase the statistical significance of their results. Such analyses processes are typical examples of data-intensive processes. In general, data-intensive processes are characterized by (i) a sequence of functional operations processing large amount of data and (ii) the transportation and transformation of huge data sets between the functional operations. To support data-intensive processes, an efficient and scalable environment is required, since the performance is a key factor today. The service-oriented architecture (SOA) is beneficial in this area according to process orchestration and execution. However, the current realization of SOA with Web services and BPEL includes some drawbacks with regard to the performance of the data propagation between Web services. Therefore, we present in this paper our data-aware service-oriented approach to efficiently support such data-intensive processes.

A social Internet of Things application architecture : applying semantic web technologies for achieving interoperability and automation between the cyber, physical and social worlds / A social Internet of Things application architecture : l'application des technologies du web sémantique pour réaliser l'interopérabilité et de l'automatisation entre les mondes physiques, cyber et sociauxHussein Ali, Dina 04 December 2015 (has links)
Nos résultats empiriques montrent un niveau de service amélioré l'adaptabilité et la complexité en temps de fonctionner lors de l'application de notre contexte cognitif suggéré / The paradigm of the Social Internet of Things (SIoT) is being promoted in the literature to boost a new trend wherein the benefits of social network services are exhibited within the network of connected objects i.e., the Internet of Things (IoT). The novel user-friendly interaction framework of the SIoT opens the doors for enhancing the intelligence required to stimulate a shift in the IoT from a heterogeneous network of independently connected objects towards a manageable network of everything. In practice, achieving scalability within the large-scale and the heterogeneous paradigm of the IoT while maintaining on top of its user-friendly and intuitive services to bridge human-to-machine perceptions and encourage the technology’s adaptation is a major challenge which is hindering the realization and deployment of the IoT technologies and applications into people’s daily live. For the goal of handling IoT challenges, as well as improve the level of smart services adaptability to users’ situational needs, in this thesis, novel SIoT-based application architecture is provided. That is, Semantic Web Technologies are envisaged as a means to develop automated, value-added services for SIoT. While, interoperability and automation are essential requirement to seamlessly integrate such services into user life, Ontologies are used to semantically describe Web services with the aim of enabling the automatic invocation and composition of these services as well as support interactions across the cyber, physical and social worlds. On the other hand, handling the variety of contextual data in SIoT for intelligent decision making is another big challenge which is still in very early stages of research. In this thesis we propose a cognitive reasoning approach taking into consideration achieving situational-awareness (SA) in SIoT. This reasoning approach is deployed within two application domains where results show an improved level of services adaptability compared to location-aware services which are previously proposed in the literature

Design, development and experimentation of a discovery service with multi-level matchingPileththuwasan Gallege, Lahiru Sandakith 20 November 2013 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The contribution of this thesis focuses on addressing the challenges of improving and integrating the UniFrame Discovery Service (URDS) and Multi-level Matching (MLM) concepts. The objective was to find enhancements for both URDS and MLM and address the need of a comprehensive discovery service which goes beyond simple attribute based matching. It presents a detailed discussion on developing an enhanced version of URDS with MLM (proURDS). After implementing proURDS, the thesis includes details of experiments with different deployments of URDS components and different configurations of MLM. The experiments and analysis were carried out using proURDS produced MLM contracts. The proURDS referred to a public dataset called QWS dataset. This dataset includes actual information of software components (i.e., web services), which were harvested from the Internet. The proURDS implements the different matching operations as independent operators at each level of matching (i.e., General, Syntactic, Semantic, Synchronization, and QoS). Finally, a case study was carried out with the deployed proURDS. The case study addresses real world component discovery requirements from the earth science domain. It uses the contracts collected from public portals which provide geographical and weather related data.

Cloud Computing and the GLAM sector : A case study of the new Digital Archive Project of Åland Maritime Museum.Faruqi, Ubaid Ali January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines the benefits and drawbacks of cloud computing technology within the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector of Sweden and Finland. It employs the case study of the recently developed and launched Digital Archive Project at Åland Maritime Museum which leveraged the Amazon Web Services (AWS) technology stack to provide a cloud-based digital platform for the museum's archival materials. The primary objective of this study is to understand the interaction, usage, and suitability of cloud computing technologies and the impact of User Experience (UX) (primary users being the GLAM professionals) on digitalization efforts. This study analyzes eight GLAM institutions in Sweden and Finland using semi-structured interviews and compares the trust and readiness of adapting to private cloud service providers. The findings reveal that Finland has a more ‘aggressive’ and experimental approach to newer technologies such as cloud computing tools, compared to Sweden. In Sweden, there is an appreciation for pleasant UX and methods to make heritage material more accessible, but there is also a lot of hesitation due to the data privacy regulations in the aftermath of the Schrems II Judgment and the invalidation of the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Agreement. The study concludes that AWS as a cloud provider is difficult to incorporate in the public sector GLAM institutions compared to the private sector. The study also provides practical recommendations for GLAM institutions and professionals and calls for further interdisciplinary research with Digital Humanists at the center of it.

Sustainable development of urban areas is a challenge of highest interest at global level. Never before could anyone have thought of the information as an asset of our society. The advent of the new technologies have provided us with a huge amount of unthinkable resources to manage the data generated by the city and make urban areas evolve.
Nowadays a proper management of the city will depend on the continent, the amount and nature of the data and the resources and infrastructures to be taken into account. This is the beginning of what will make the current concept of city change. The new model of the city we will face is due to a higher connectivity and interaction, without human intervention, among all the services that determine an urban centre. This is an approach to what would be the 'intelligent city' or SmartCity. To develop this concept, a feature of paramount importance is the mobility of the elements that form it and make it live, as it is what supports the daily routine in the urban model. A very important element in this context is the electric vehicle (FEV, 'Full Electric Vehicle'), for all the reasons we see in our work. For a proper launching of the FEV it is necessary to integrate it with the rest of infrastructures that influence the mobility in the city.
Our work has consisted of researching and designing an interoperability solution to manage the use of the FEV in the urban landscape.
The first of our goals in this work is to put the FEV in place into the SmartCity. To achieve it, it is required to study the most relevant parts of a centralised information system in order to manage the vehicle autonomy, the energy demand in the city, the energy availability in each charge station and a user interface to communite with the system. Moreover, the system will be able to manage, in a proactive way, the needs of the network in order to optimise costs and improve efficiency.
On the other hand, the second of our objectives is to study how the factors involved in the mobility within the SmartCity can ensure that FEV mobility is carried out as planned and, with it, conveniently integrate the FEV in the urban mobility system. In other words, our aim is to integrate the FEV management landscape, studied in the first part, with the other agents of mobility into the SmartCity, thus providing a comprehensive solution to the problem of integration of the FEV in the new European cities ecosystem. This requires optimizing the interaction between the FEV and the meteorological information, traffic and mobility services in the city such as public transport, parking and e-sharing, in addition to a necessary traffic forecasting strategy for the early decision-making.
