The Myth of Integration: Diffusion of Health Systems Strengthening Norm in Global HealthMagill, Elizabeth January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Sarah Babb / Since 2000, the global health management approach of health systems strengthening
(HSS) has gained support from many local and international stakeholders. This thesis
investigates the diffusion of the HSS norm in the global health community and within
two disease programs of malaria and tuberculosis. I show how strong support for HSS by
the global health community has been overwhelmed by coercive pressure from resourcewielding
funding and governance structures. Drawing on organizational theory, I argue
that global health organizations and experts have engaged in strategic social
reconstruction and avoidance tactics to rationalize hypocrisy towards the HSS norm. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2017. / Submitted to: Boston College. College of Arts and Sciences. / Discipline: Scholar of the College. / Discipline: International Studies.

This thesis deals with the management approach in performance management, today known world by the concept of Corporate Performance Management. CPM describes the relationship to Business Intelligence and methodologies, processes, metrics and technologies that together form the concept. There is also a description of CPM applications which cover the five most commonly deployed areas. The second part is devoted to what-if analysis that is one of several methodologies which are part of the CPM package. It also contains the list of competing tools that cover this area. The following hypothetical example of putting what-if analysis, aimed at resolving issues of fictitious company, related to costs, revenue and profit. Example is based on technology developed at IBM Cognos TM1. During the example solutions are presented with all the basic functionality that this technology offers.

Set-Based User InteractionTerry, Michael Andrew 13 July 2005 (has links)
This work demonstrates specific ways that the design of computer user interfaces can influence how individuals structure the problem solving process. In particular, an observational study of expert users of an image manipulation application indicates that current user interfaces make it difficult to explore sets of alternatives in parallel, despite this being a common problem solving practice. As a consequence, individuals tend to engage in highly linear problem solving processes. To address this problem, this work introduces the concept of a set-based interface, or an interface that facilitates the generation, manipulation, evaluation, and management of sets of alternative solutions. The concepts of a set-based interface are demonstrated in two tools, Side Views and Parallel Pies, both designed for use in the domain of image manipulation. Side Views automatically generates sets of previews for one or more commands and their parameters, enabling side-by-side comparison of alternatives. Parallel Pies streamlines the process of forking, or the act of creating new, standalone alternatives, and provides a visualization to evaluate results. Two controlled laboratory studies and a third think-aloud study reveal that these tools lead to users more broadly exploring the solution space and developing more optimal solutions for some types of tasks. These studies also show that the ability to broadly explore can initially be overused, adversely affecting solution quality if not enough time is spent maturing a single solution instance. This enthusiastic use of exploration tools is especially notable because such features are entirely optional to developing a solution. As such, these results suggest the need to further research ways user interfaces can support individuals in rapidly generating sets of alternative solutions. To support future research in this direction, this work contributes a set of metrics for quantifying breadth and depth of exploration; backtracking; and dead-ends in the problem solving process. A visualization called a process diagram aids in communicating these concepts.

Inheritance in a Wheat Cross of Riddit X UtacDalley, C. Leland 01 May 1931 (has links)
Present-day plant breeding, on the foundation made many years ago, has achieved important scientific and economic results. By means of introductions and selections, superior strains such as Turkey and Kanred have been obtained. Through hybridization new combinations of characters result, combining desirable characters of different plant types in a single individual. In this program, wheat hybridization has occupied a worthy place.
Each year a number of wheat crosses are made at the Utah Experiment Station, the main purpose of which is to develop superior strains of wheat. Such an economic program is aided and hastened by studies in genetic behavior.
This paper reports such a genetic study of the inheritance of awns, spike density, and kernel color in a cross between Ridit and Utac wheat varieties.

You Are What You Eat: Malnutrition and its Determinants in Ecuador:Stone, Lindsay January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: John Michalczyk / Why do we eat the foods that we do? This question is one that is not often considered by individuals as they go about their daily lives, but can have large implications on public health – for, there is a strong, physiological connection between food consumption and one’s health and wellbeing. Accordingly, when reflecting upon the health of a nation it is often important to consider its nutritional status. Ultimately, many determinants can contribute to how and why an individual eats certain foods, as can be seen in Ecuador. In this Latin American country, for instance, historical, socioeconomic, cultural, behavioral, socioeconomic, and environmental factors (among others) can be seen to influence the different diets – and by extension, the nutritional statuses – of different ethnic, regional, and geographic populations. Though common across Ecuador, discrepancies among these groups are particularly noticeable in the highland region, the Sierra. Overall, this paper examines the different forms of malnutrition, their implications on one’s health, and their prevalence across Ecuador. Additionally, it considers how the Ecuadorian diet was shaped, and how different subcuisines lend themselves to varying forms of malnutrition. Specifically, this paper focuses on the Sierra, given that levels of malnutrition are noticeably higher in this region, and that this highland area is home to large rural and indigenous communities who are most significantly impacted by the region’s nutritional conditions. / Thesis (BS) — Boston College, 2017. / Submitted to: Boston

Pay-What-You-Want : Konsumentens attraktion till prisstrateginFagerlund, Axel, Huda, Annica January 2016 (has links)
