Who is Paule Maurice?: her relative anonymity and its consequencesUnknown Date (has links)
Paule Maurice (1910-1967) is the little known composer of Tableaux de Provence: Suite for Saxophone and Orchestra, one of the most frequently recorded and studied classical saxophone compositions in history. A more in depth study of Paule Maurice reveals a talented composer and dedicated professor whose career at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and l'Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris spanned over twenty-five years until her untimely death at age fifty-seven. Maurice composed for theatre, ballet, French National Radio, orchestra, voice, piano, flute, clarinet, and saxophone. There is question as to the whereabouts of many of her manuscripts. This thesis attempts to bring to bear the life and accomplishments of a talented French composer not well remembered in music history. / by Anthony Jon Moore. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Previous issue date: 2014-12-01 / Chico Buarque s songs became objects of study in academy because they explain the political context of the time. Therewith, the composer s songs began to be exploited, also, in Discourse Analysis studies field. In this perspective, the present work expounds the analysis of song composed during the period of military coup in Brazil, having as theoretical ground, French Discourse Analysis, founded by Michel Pêcheux, in 1969, in France and developed in Brazil by Eni Orlandi and her followers. This work has as main purpose analyze both political and poetic discourse of the songs that Chico Buarque sings as in the place of women, composed during the Brazilian military
government. Specifically, we intend to investigate the discursive formations and ideological of women in a song by Chico Buarque, besides identifying the interspeech of/about the woman in the song's composer. At the same time, we aim to understand the discursive psychology present in the discourse of/about women, but also highlight the position of subject-woman in songs by Chico Buarque. This research makes an analysis of the discourse of/about women in composer s music, considering the discourse of resistance to the military coup approached by Chico Buarque. The aim is, thus, to
understand the meaning effects of this discourse through the unsaid existent in this silence discourse. For this purpose, five songs were selected for analysis, composed between the years 1964 to 1979, take into consideration the conditions of discourse production, based on the theories and analytical procedures of DA. From this viewpoint, it is observed that the announcer express the place of women, occupying different positions, from the submissive woman to the forefront one, all immersed in the ideology of a society that lived oppressed by the military dictatorship. In the selected corpus discursive analysis, the subject-woman discursive formations slide from the submission
to independence. The conditions of production are the dictatorship, which silencing was broken in the arts and the works metaphorical effect said what the military subject could not hear. In the censorship and the resistance, the women in Chico Buarque showed the rupture strength of a say. The discursive analysis fortify the social mores of an initial era, where the patriarchalism was present more strongly, in contrast to other, a marked feminism. The study was concluded, evidencing Chico Buarque s poetic/political discourse, which the female subject is approached in the compositions, marked by discursive/ideological formations politics, social and cultural representatives of the military dictatorship.
ditadura militar.

Previous issue date: 2018-09-19 / This work is part of the research line “Reading, Writting and Portuguese Language Teaching”, from the Postgraduate Program in Portuguese Language of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. It has as general objective, the constitution of the female ethos in songs written by women composers, as well as the reading, from the rhetorical perspective of those songs in the learning environment of a regular school. Therefore, we have analyzed the female participation in the music history and the application of musical genre in the formation of youth education since the Old Greece back to current days. Based on the theoretical concepts, we analyze the songs Resposta (1958) from Maysa, Essa mulher (1978) composed by Joyce feat Ana Terra and Pagu (2000) from Rita Lee, so we could analyze which rhetorical appeals are applied in the constitution of the ethos of the woman. We highlighted through this analysis, the related aspects to the ethos (the composer’s credibility) and the logos (arguments and figures), just as the pathetic effects awakened in the audience by those songs. The ethos of the resistance and the manifestation of the passion for so long repressed, strongly uncovers in the songs.

Sara Wennerberg-Reuter : att vara kvinna och kompositör kring sekelskiftet 1800 / 1900 / Sara Wennerberg-Reuter : being a woman and composer during the late 19th and early 20th centuriesAgnevik, Maja January 2013 (has links)
This essay presents an example of the musical life of a female composer active in Sweden during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through a case study on composer Sara Wennerberg-Reuter (1875-1959), the essay contributes information to her biography, which had been lacking specific details. Wennerberg-Reuter's biography has been discussed regarding traditional roles of women in music, her relationship to her own artistry and other active women composers, and finally the contemporary reception of Wennerberg-Reuter as a legitimate composer. Aesthetical theories prevalent during Wennerberg-Reuter’s life has been applied in these discussions, such as those presented by Citron, Öhrström and Hanson, combined with Citron's additional theories considering masculine/feminine elements in the musical approach. The main conclusions reached regarding the specific conditions enabling a professional status as a composer and woman in Sweden during the given time are; a) the liberal permission by the family to pursue higher education in composing, since this was in opposition to the traditions of the time. b) the access to a network of musically active women, from which a sense of being part of a female community can be created. c) the acceptance from musical institutions such as higher educations, composer's societies and media critics.

Women in Music: Letting a Long Story Be Long Contemplating Women’s Sonic, Musical, and Spiritual Experiences in PrehistorySaidel, Deborah J 01 January 2018 (has links)
Situated within deep history, this study explores the auditory and spiritual lives of Paleolithic women. It considers their personal agency in mediating the spiritual power of sound and how doing so contributes to a multifaceted musicality. The theoretical framework involves a wide spectrum of topics, from ways of rethinking the writing of history and reckoning with time, to sound studies and the study of acoustics in ancient sites, to a critical examination through a feminist lens of normative disciplinary scholarship in anthropology and archaeology, religious studies, and musicology. I explore potential audio-visual-lithic relationships for their implications for deepening an understanding of the spiritual aspects of Paleolithic life. Drawing from this interdisciplinary literature, integrative discussions are constructed which when considered collectively, not only provide different types of role models and different criteria pertaining to women's experiences of music-making, but also facilitate the emergence of a more nuanced understanding of Paleolithic spiritual practices. In this women-centric narrative innumerable generations of women's participation as spiritual healers within the shamanic musical paradigm are acknowledged and valued, broadening the parameters of women's cultural heritage and spiritual experience. This expansion can help women today turn away from a compensatory music history perspective that is oriented toward figuring out how to fit into a prescribed androcentric narrative of Western art music and turn towards a more holistic narrative in which women can better consider their lineage(s) on their own terms. It fosters re-conceptualizations of women's musical and spiritual identities by reorienting the timeline, contexts, and definition of women's experiences of music-making as sound-producers and sound-interpreters. This project is intended to provide one possible starting point for new conversations about women in music regardless of one's positionality. From a more inclusive gynocentric vantage point, the toxic self-perpetuating loop which has affected how musicology has thus far been shaped, namely through the undervaluing of women’s musical experiences and the ways that they think and feel about music, is being contested. Ultimately, it is a matter of ownership.
