Kockerols, Thore 02 July 2018 (has links)
The main theme of this thesis are macro-financial linkages. I covered three different questions related to this topic. In the first chapter Gaël Giraud and I develop a model for the Euro Area answering to many of the critiques of policy models before the Global Financial Crisis and with a focus on the interaction between the financial sector and the macroeconomy. The second and third chapter focus on behaviour of the financial sector in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis and its implications for the macroeconomy. Chapter 2 investigates the practice of forbearance towards stressed borrowers. The ultimately relevant question in this chapter is to what extend there is a feedback to the real economy due to this behaviour. Finally, the third chapter sheds light on an episode of manipulation in commodity markets. This alleged manipulation was apparently only possible due to the dominant market position banks took in the run up to the crisis and thereafter. Ultimately I quantify the effects of such behaviour and provide evidence of a structural change of the manipulated market during the period of alleged manipulation. The first chapter exploits a bank level dataset, whereas in chapter 2 and 3 I develop structural macroeconomic models. Especially the dynamical system model in the second chapter is an innovation. This class of models and more specifically a model of the size we develop has never been estimated and subsequently used for policy analysis.

O zumbi como personagem midiático: desdobramentos políticos

Oliveira, André 30 November 2012 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Andre Oliveira.pdf: 62201460 bytes, checksum: 7bd1951f3685c007ed4c8fd33e190d34 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-11-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Zombies have been part of people s imagination for many centuries. However, for the last twenty years, a zombie culture has been developed and it has been taking its place throughout different types of media, such as audiovisual and press. Moreover, this culture has also been present in people´s celebrations and manifestations, for example: festivals, parties, performances, etc. The purpose of this dissertation is to identify how the new versions of zombies constitute not only a form of entertainment, but also a political metaphor, representing the disqualification of human life (bare life) and the fine line between life and death. This research comprises from the pioneer movie Night Of The Living Dead (1968), directed by filmmaker George Romero, to recent work related to films, comic books, photographs and images found online. The methodology brings together bibliographical research and the analysis of images which were selected from diverse media. The theoretical context is formed by the political studies of the fictional genre, which are based on body horror, proposed by Benjamin Noys (2005), and the analysis of Auschwitz Living Dead, known as Muselmann and transformed into one of the important paradigms of contemporary political philosophy by Giorgio Agamben (2008). The study of the way man s natural life influences power mechanisms will be carried in the field of communication throughout the corpomidia theory (KATZ & GREINER, 2005). The expected result is the questioning and discussion of the apathy that is brought by zombies, which characterizes some of the fundamental dimensions of current social behavior in society and in the media / O personagem zumbi faz parte da imaginação humana há muitos séculos, no entanto, nos últimos vinte anos tem constituído a chamada cultura zumbi que ocupa diferentes ambientes midiáticos como a mídia impressa, audiovisual e uma pluralidade de manifestações urbanas (festivais, festas, performances etc).

Where I am, There (Sh)it will be: Queer Presence in Post Modern Horror Films

McDougald, Melanie 17 July 2009 (has links)
This paper will consider the function of queer space and presence in the post modern horror film genre. Beginning with George Romero’s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead and continuing through to contemporary examples of the genre, the paper posits the function of the queer monster or monstrous as integral to and representative of the genre as a whole. The paper analyzes both the current theory and scholarship of the genre and through Lacanian psychoanalytic theory and queer theory offers a theory of how these theories can add to existing theory and scholarship.

Seriemördare i fiktionen : Jeffrey Dahmer som karaktär hos Lotta Lotass och Joyce Carol Oates / Fictional Serial Killers : Jeffrey Dahmer as a Protagonist in Works of Lotte Lotass and Joyce Carol Oates

Sundberg Brorsson, Tone January 2013 (has links)
Serial killers are present in most Media today: TV-shows, books, magazines, news shows and music. Research about them has been made in many fields, such as criminology, psychology and psychiatry. There is also research about the serial killer as a cultural being. In my paper I have looked into the serial killer in fiction. I have chosen to compare two novels that deal with the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. The novels are Lotta Lotass’ Min röst skall nu komma från en annan plats i rummet and Joyce Carols Oates’ Zombie. By examining how the novels relate to the actual case and how they describe the violence and the person,I wanted to see if fiction can give a contrasting picture of how serial killers are usually described. I wanted to know if itis possible for fiction to represent serial killers as persons rather thanas inhuman monsters. My paper shows that although the novels differ in a lot of aspects, they both manage to contrast the picture of Dahmer. Zombieis more loosely based on Dahmer than Min röst, but focuses more on the violence. The Dahmer character in Zombie is more psychologically complex than the one in Min röst, but they both manage to describe the characters as human and they both avoid the stereotypical representation of serial killers.

Dead reckoning : an analysis of George Romero's 'Living dead' series in relation to contemporary theories of film genre and representations of race, class, culture and violence.

Hemmings, Jonathan Michael. January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is an in-depth analysis of George Romero's 'Living Dead' tetralogy of films, comprising Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn ofthe-Bead (1978), Day of the Dead(\985) and Land of the Dead (2005), examined through the lensf of contemporary film genre theory. The project focuses specifically on issues of the representation of race, class, culture and violence in the four films, and how these representations, along with the concomitant social critique evident in Romero's work, change in response to the upheavals and developments which have occurred in the American social, cultural and political climate over the past four decades. It also focuses on how Romero's films respond to changes in the horror genre, and how Romero both structures his films on the binary oppositions which are central to the genre and deconstructs these oppositions, and the implications that this deconstruction (most notably that of the figure of the zombie, which occupies a zone of constantly shifting liminality between the human and the monstrous) has in relation to Romero's socio-cultural and political commentary implicit in the films. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2008

No. of bitstreams: 1 6088.pdf: 4784332 bytes, checksum: de1ab224481cdf1235abbba0a4ce7efb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-07-02 / This study aims to analyze the genre of zombie movies establishing a dialogue between their narrative spaces, the historical contexts in which they are situated, and their connections to other works in different media, in an intermedial perspective. Therefore, this research sought to study three narrative spaces that were widely used in the films of the genre: the Caribbean space, used in 1930-1940 American films of the Haitian zombie; internal and external areas of the United States, seen in flesh eaters zombie films created by George Romero in the second half of the 20th century; and major world capitals destroyed, present in many contemporary zombie films from various countries. In this context, this study main objective is to perform a spatial analysis of zombie films, that explores the possible connections and interrelations between the colonial metropolis/colony, inside/outside, and national/global spatial dichotomies, with the historical and social contexts in which these works are contained.

Nascimento Josefsson, Nadia Pricilla January 2018 (has links)

Non-performing loans : An analysis of the relationship between non-performing loans and profitability among European banks.

Nordlinder, Elias, Sundell, Oliver January 2017 (has links)
During the last decade, many European banks have been troubled with low profitability, while the amount of non-performing loans (NPLs) has increased. This thesis investigates and analyses how the increasing amount of NPL affects banks profitability and the financial system. With econometric models using panel data we examined the relationship between NPL, banks profitability and the economic cycle (GDP-growth). This combined with qualitative economic theories provided a solid analysis of this relationship. We found strong evidence the NPL-ratio has a negative correlation with both the profitability of banks and the economic cycle. With these results in mind we think the NPLs need to be dealt with by the banks and authorities soon. In accordance with our result and analysis we came up with recommendations for the banks and authorities to deal with the issue. We recognize they need to improve the secondary markets for non-performing loans, lifting the loans from their balance sheets, increase the use of Asset Management Companies and improve the NPL-management within banks.
