Energy issues are constantly increasing attention in today's society. People's impact on Earth isentered in more contexts. Many discussions are about how the entire social structure needs to bestreamlined in order to achieve sustainability. The residential and service sector accounts for 39 % oftoday's total energy consumption in Sweden and the increasing electricity prices have made buyersmore interested in energy issues. There are many buildings in need of refurbishment today, including all the apartments that werebuilt in the 1970s to reduce the housing shortage at the time. 650 000 apartments of one millionapartments were built during the so-called the one million program and is currently in need ofrefurbishment. The opportunity for energy efficiency of these at the refurbishment is great. Due tothe scale of these dwellings all Sweden's energy consumption would be reduced when theseapartments are energy efficient. We have therefore chosen to study a building that was built overthe one million program and investigated the possibility of converting it into a passive house. Wehave studied solutions to insulate the buildings envelope to reduce heat transmission, andinstallation solutions for heat recovery of ventilation air. This is done to the building so it can beclassified as a passive house. The building which has been studied in this report is an 8 storey building built in the 1970s inÖsterängsområdet in Kristianstad. The building is in need of refurbishment and the energyconsumption is in the current situation 209 kWh/m2/year compared with passive house requirementof 50 kWh/m2, year. Passive house is a term used for buildings with no conventional heating system. The building is heated by the heat generated from the people and home appliances in the building. The concept is based on minimizing the energy consumption in a building. The methods used for gathering information for this thesis were: literature review of books, reports, dissertations and the Internet. Conversations with knowledgeable people within their area ofexpertise have also been made to clarify some issues that have arisen during the process of thesis.Energy calculations were made in the calculation program Isover 3 to apply the passive houseconcept in the building in Kristianstad. The conclusion from the work is that it is possible to refurbish a non-energy efficient building tobecome an energy-efficient passive hose. The greatest difference in the energy calculations isreached when the ventilation system is changed from an exhaust system to a supply and exhaustheat exchanger. The efficiency of heat recycling from exhaust air is an important part of the buildingto reach the passive house standard.
