"En kamp! Stackars barn som inte har föräldrar med kraft och resurser." : En studie av föräldrars perspektiv på språkstörning, skola och livskvalitet / "A Struggle! Poor Children Who don´t have Parents with Energy or Resources.” : A study of parents' perspective of developmental language disorder, school and quality of life

The aim of this study was to investigate the parents´ perspective of school, their experience of having a child with developmental language disorder (DLD) and their quality of life. A qualitative interview guide was used in three interviews with parents and a survey was answered by 76 parents. The material was analysed using thematic analysis and sorted into three main themes; effects on quality of life, experience we can learn from, and support for children in school. Teachers' relational skills and knowledge of DLD are of great importance. The results show that pupils with DLD are at risk of feeling depressed and that many parents are forced to fight for their children’s rights, to receive feedback, and have functional communications with teachers and other members of the school staff. In conclusion; everyone in school needs to meet parents with openness and accessibility, show understanding and work to eliminate obstacles in school. Furthermore, it is necessary to improve teachers´ knowledge about developmental language disorder.
