Previous issue date: 2011-06-07 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / I propound in this dissertation, as a fundamental hypothesis, that dreams are
phenomena integrated in the dynamics of human communication, as an occurrence both
of mental processing of communicational contents and of prospective simulation and
ignition for communicative actions expressed in a state of wakefulness, in the social
environment. In order to support this hypothesis, I approximate theoretical models of
Communication and recent theories and concepts generated in the fields of Cognitive
Sciences and Neurosciences, so as to articulate new transdisciplinary nexuses. Starting
with a revision of theorizations on sleep and dreams formulated, since the discovery of
the REM sleep and the first descriptions of the phases of dreams, in the mid 20th century,
in the sphere of the biological sciences, I concentrate on theoretical aspects, such as
those developed by Winson (1986), Stickgold (2007), Ribeiro and Nicolelis (2004;
2007), which identify specific and relevant cognitive functions, in oneiric phenomena
and experiences. Next, making use of the Threat-Simulation Theory by Revonsuo (2000),
of formulations on the evolution of verbal lingual sociability and of human
communication as those of Pinker (2003), and of the conceptions about the function of
metaphorical language of Freud (2001) and of Lakoff and Johnson (1999), I submit that
dreams are simulations capable of reinforcing learning and engendering behavior and
solutions for confronting social and communicational challenges. Lastly, by using the
Corpomídia Theory of Katz and Greiner (2001; 2004; 2009) I support a conception of
dreams as a cognitive process integrator of experience, prospective simulator and
trigger of communicative actions in the informational dynamics of corpomídia and I
uphold the promising potential of this approach, especially in the face of the challenges
imposed by the socio-technological evolution of the means of communication, of the
techno-corporal interfaces and of the new communicational relationships already
articulated or that should emerge through utilization of these new medias and
interfaces. Using as a basis for my arguments the bibliographic research and
interviews, which I carried out as a reporter in the area of scientific journalism, I seek
the approximation of different fields of knowledge, rejecting reductionist snares and
aiming for the opening of new perspectives in the approach to crucial problems
concerning virtual realities and bio-politics. I intend thus to contribute for the
establishment of theoretical instruments capable of elucidating some of the more
challenging contemporary questions, intrinsically composed of an intermingling of
biological, cultural and communicational phenomena / Proponho nesta dissertação, como hipótese fundamental, que os sonhos são fenômeno
integrante da dinâmica da comunicação humana, tanto como instância de
processamento mental de conteúdos comunicacionais quanto de simulação prospectiva
e ignição para ações comunicativas expressas em estado de vigília, no ambiente social.
Para sustentar essa hipótese, aproximo modelos teóricos da Comunicação e recentes
teorias e conceitos gerados nos campos das Ciências Cognitivas e das Neurociências,
de modo a articular novos nexos transdisciplinares. Partindo de uma revisão das
teorizações sobre o sono e os sonhos formuladas, desde a descoberta do sono REM e
das primeiras descrições das fases do sono, em meados do século XX, no âmbito das
ciências biológicas, concentro-me em vertentes teóricas, como as desenvolvidas por
Winson (1986), Stickgold (2007), Ribeiro e Nicolelis (2004; 2007), que identificam
funções cognitivas, específicas e relevantes, nos fenômenos e nas vivências oníricas. Em
seguida, lançando mão da Teoria da Simulação de Perigo, de Revonsuo (2000), de
formulações acerca da evolução da sociabilidade, da linguagem verbal e da
comunicação humanas como as de Pinker (2003), e das concepções sobre a função da
linguagem metafórica de Freud (2001) e de Lakoff e Johnson (1999), proponho que os
sonhos são simulações capazes de reforçar aprendizados e engendrar comportamentos
e soluções para o enfrentamento de desafios sociais e comunicativos. Por fim, por meio
da Teoria Corpomídia, de Katz e Greiner (2001; 2004; 2009) sustento uma concepção
de sonho como processo cognitivo integrador da experiência, simulador prospectivo e
disparador de ações comunicativas na dinâmica informacional do corpomídia e
defendo o potencial promissor dessa abordagem, especialmente diante dos desafios
impostos pela evolução sociotecnológica dos meios de comunicação, das interfaces
tecnocorporais e das novas relações comunicativas que já se articulam ou deverão
emergir mediante a utilização dessas novas mídias e interfaces. Baseando-me em
pesquisa bibliográfica e entrevistas, que realizei como repórter na área do jornalismo
científico, busco a aproximação de diferentes campos do saber, rejeitando armadilhas
reducionistas e visando a abertura de novas perspectivas na abordagem de problemas
cruciais em tempos de realidades virtuais e biopolítica. Pretendo, assim, contribuir
para a construção de instrumentais teóricos, aptos a elucidar algumas das mais
desafiadoras questões da contemporaneidade, constituídas, intrinsecamente, por um
entrelaçamento de fenômenos biológicos, culturais e comunicacionais
