A study of social change in Saharawi refugee camps: democracy, education and women??s rights

Refugee studies often focus on the devastating effects forced migration can have on a refugee population, both mentally and physically. This research investigates the case of Saharawis living in refugee camps in south-west Algeria and the social change experienced over 30 years. The method was a case study with qualitative interviews supported with secondary data. The Saharawis went through a period of positive social change, to some a revolution, while living in the refugee camps. The empirical study identifies three theme areas; Education, Women??s rights and Democracy. These circumstances are unlike many other refugee studies, thus providing what may be a unique case of positive social change. The case demonstrates how forced migration of a population may not just be a destructive process, but instead has the potential to reconstruct a society. Theories of social change and unanticipated outcomes are explored. Utilising the theories of Bourdieu and Merton, it is proposed that the Saharawi refugee experience is the unanticipated outcome of forced migration. This thesis explores commonalities and differences between Bourdieu??s study of the Kabyle population, and whether his theory of habitus is applicable. Bourdieu??s theories, heavily criticised for being too structuralist, show their limitations when dealing with positive social change. Bourdieu??s approach can suggest that it is inevitable for refugee populations to spiral into despair. The Saharawi case challenges these presumptions and highlights that neither sociologists nor populations should exclude the possibility of unexpected outcomes. Unanticipated outcomes are an acknowledgement of social change and the fact that at its heart no one can predict the future.

Syftet med denna studie har varit att undersöka hur förskolepersonal resonerar kring flerspråkighet. Tidigare forskning har visat att barns flerspråkighet i förskolan uppfattas som problematisk. Studien utgår från forskning om interkulturell pedagogik samt begrepp utifrån den franske utbildningssociologen Pierre Bourdieus teori. Den teoretiska förankringen har i studien används för att förklara och för att nå ökad förståelse för flerspråkighetens problematik i förskolan.  För att belysa problematiken genomfördes en intervjustudie med utgångspunkt i frågeställningarna: Hur ser förskolepersonalen på flerspråkighet i förskolan? Hur uppfattar förskolepersonalen modersmålets betydelse för barnets kunskaps- och språkutveckling? Sju stycken förskolepersonal (förskolechefer, förskollärare och barnskötare) på tre förskolor i en mindre kommun intervjuades. Det gick att urskilja olika samtalsämnen i förskolepersonalens resonemang utifrån förskolepersonalens bakgrund och kompetenser, vårdnadshavares roll i den flerspråkiga förskolan, hemmets roll i modersmålsutvecklingen, svenska språkets betydelse, barns språkliga svårigheter, flerspråkighetens och modersmålets betydelse. Resultatet visade att förskolepersonalen har en positiv inställning till flerspråkighet, samtidigt upplevde de olika svårigheter i samband med barns olika modersmål. Flerspråkighet ansågs utgöra en merit i det framtida arbetslivet, samt som viktig för barns självkänsla och trygghet. De intervjuade upplevde även att flerspråkighet hade positiv påverkan på deras egen kompetensutveckling och förhållningssätt. Det som upplevdes som nackdel var olika sorts kommunikationssvårigheter, samt att brister i svenska utgör en viss risk för utanförskap. Med utgångspunkt i Bourdieus teori konstateras att förskolepersonalens och barns habitus spelar roll för flerspråkiga barns utveckling, likväl som flerspråkighet kan utgöra ett symbolisk kapital både i förskolan och samhället.

Exploring the intersection of translation and music : an analysis of how foreign songs reach Chinese audiences

The thesis looks into the practice of song translation, which occupies a peripheral position in translation studies (TS) despite its commonplace occurrence and significant impact on the global spread of songs. Foreign songs enjoy enormous appeal in China, where different methods have been adopted to translate them with the aim of enhancing listeners’ full reception. In particular, the practice of writing Chinese lyrics anew and setting them to the foreign tunes regardless of the semantic relationship between the source text (ST) and the target text (TT) has proliferated over the past decades. Some translated songs capture the gist of the original lyrics omitting minor details whereas some sever their relations with the original. This blurs the boundaries between translation, adaptation and rewriting lyrics. Another noticeable phenomenon is the emergence of self-organising communities, whose involvement in translating song lyrics and circulating subtitled music videos (MVs) cannot be overlooked in today’s digital landscape. Song translation can be understood as a field with its own “rules of the game” and exchange of different forms of capital following a Bourdieusian perspective. Adopting a case study methodology, the thesis investigates the particular field of song translation with special reference to the translation practices of a veteran song translator named Xue Fan 薛范, online amateur translators, and a professional lyricist from Hong Kong called Albert Leung 林夕. These case studies have been conducted for providing an in-depth analysis of China’s song translation activities through time and the dynamics of the power relations in the field. To translate a song from one language and culture into another invariably involves the losses and gains of certain elements, given the song’s semiotic richness. Against this backdrop, the thesis attempts to examine how the interplay of different meaning-making modes in a song has been dealt with by different agents under various circumstances through close examination of the relationship between STs and TTs. This will allow a better understanding of the production, circulation and reception of song translations in respective historical, ideological and social contexts. It is hoped that the thesis can provide new insights into our understanding of ‘translation’ in relation to music, and further shed light on how translation evolves at the convergence of music and technology in the globalisation era.

Os resultados foram selecionados, examinados com fins analíticos, e discutidos em suas implicações político-epistemológicas. O enfoque recai sobre as práticas acadêmicas, de modo que o conceito de campo artístico não é abordado, ainda que a relação entre capital artístico e acadêmico seja discutida. Conclui-se que o campo acadêmico da dança está em processo de constituição. A produção de pesquisa vem crescendo consideravelmente nos últimos anos e caracterizase como geopoliticamente dispersa, apresentando focos de concentração. É epistemologicamente diversificada, com autoridades locais e certa tendência à eugenia. Indica-se que sua consolidação seria favorecida pela criação de estruturas que promovessem ambientes de cooperação e disputas, como encontros acadêmicos, revistas e periódicos, estimulando a especialização dos agentes, definição de autoridades e reconhecimento das especificidades dos produtos. Family language policy and practice as parental mediation of habitus, capital and field : an ethnographic case-study of migrant families in England

This research aims to examine how migrant families living in England establish their family language policy and practice. It is set within a context of increased levels of transnational migration and globalisation (OECD, 2015). The number of migrant families in which parents have different language backgrounds is increasing on a European level (Lanzieri, 2012) and in London one in three families is thought to be multilingual (OECD, 2010). This has implications for research into the role of languages for education of children from migrant families. According to the Department for Education (DfE, 2017) in England, the percentage of pupils who are believed to be exposed to a language other than English at home has been steadily increasing since 2006, and in 2017, 20.6 per cent of primary school pupils and 16.2 per cent of secondary school pupils had English as an additional language. While some research has investigated how children from migrant families succeed at school by measuring their educational outcomes, there are a lack of studies which explore what is happening within migrant families themselves: how and why do some migrant families in the same context practise and maintain their heritage languages, while others do not? (Curdt-Christiansen, 2009, 2016). To examine the ways in which migrant families in England decide on their family language policy and practice, this study adopts a coherent model which integrates two theoretical frameworks, namely Pierre Bourdieu’s (1977b) theory of social practice with its concepts of habitus, field and capital, and Family Language Policy (FLP). The aim of bringing together the two theoretical frameworks is to examine how family language policy and practice is mediated by the families’ subjective experience and the conditions in the objective social context of which they are a part. This study employs ethnographic methods of inquiry including interviews, participant observations and family self-audio recordings to allow for an in-depth exploration of the ways in which five migrant families in England set up their family language policy and practice. The mothers in the families are all Macedonian and the fathers are either English, Italian, Chinese, Scottish or Serbian. Ethnographic interviews were conducted with the parents in five migrant families, their children, grandparents and relatives, the parents’ and the children’ close social network of friends, the children’s mainstream school teachers and members of the Macedonian community in London. The analysis of each family case focuses on the family language policy and practice and the parents’ language ideologies and aspirations that underpin them. The study also analyses the ways in which the national language education policy context in England structures the family language policy and practice. The findings suggest that the family language policy and practice in migrant families is established based on the ways in which the parents mediate their past experiences including their family upbringing, education and employment as migrants in England (habitus) and the cultural, linguistic, social and economic resources they are able or unable to draw on (capital) within the context of national and local language education policies and practices in England (field).

Counted as one of the most remarkable sociologists th of the 20 Century, Bourdieu has established his work, which is still deeply influent in Social Sciences, in the concept of habitus as an individual compartment where interferences, external to the agent, reverberate, undertaking a new effort in the delimitation of this idea, already considered millenary in Human Sciences. By appointing an indissoluble onto-epistemological relation between habitus and field, the bourdieusian sociology indicates new theoretical and empirical boundaries for the investigation of the relation among the instances related to the agencies and structures. The bourdieusian gnosiological step, materialized in the utilization of the notion of habitus, has considered itself as able of overcoming, in a more definitive way, the infinity of sociological dichotomies, many times expressed in oppositions such as objectivism/subjectivism and nominalism/realism , which, if considered from the point of view of a detailed analysis of the individual and/or society, consists in regarding varied nuances between both spheres, without, necessarily, making common cause with any of them. Parallely to the use of the concept of habitus in many sociological parties by Bourdieu, there is a profuse debate about which instruments the sociological analysis should rely on, concerning the scientific process of perception and understanding of reality. The research also relies on the idea of habitus as a primordial concept for perceiving theoretical-analytical perspectives among the many fundamental tendencies in Social Sciences, as well as among the most illuminating exponents from different moments in Sociology, which, undeniably, keep a constant dialogue with the theoretical and empirical panoramas delineated by Pierre Bourdieu.

Para tanto, será utilizada a história oral como método científico para a realização de entrevistas e a análise de conteúdo para a análise de dados. Os dados revelam que o habitus de conselheiro, que permite uma acumulação do capital simbólico valorizado no Conselho Superior do IFES, contribuiu para um distanciamento entre representantes e representados. O Conselho Superior possui características do campo político, por isso, a impossibilidade de compreender suas ações apenas pela documentação produzida, ou seja, ata e resoluções. Sua organização e regramento concede uma distinção aos dirigentes em função aos demais, os quais possuem o capital institucional, e por meio deste, exercem a violência simbólica aos demais, conservando a hierarquia do campo.
