Using Latent Profile Analysis to Derive a Classification of Four-Year Colleges and Universities

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Organizational classifications are critical to a wide variety of stakeholders. Within the domain of higher education, researchers use established classifications for sample selection or within empirical models to account for unobserved organizational characteristics. Colleges and universities, as well as their political principals, often use classifications to form peer-groups and reference sets through which organizational performance is assessed. More broadly, classifications provide aspirational archetypes to an organizational field. Using American higher education as the empirical context, this dissertation introduces Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) as a method to identify the structure of an organizational field and to classify organizations within this structure. Using measures of model fit and concerns for interpretability, this investigation determined that 13 distinctive organizational designs are present in the field of American higher education. Derived groupings are compared to the 2018 Basic Classification from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Opportunities and challenges for operationalizing this derived classification are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Public Administration and Policy 2020

Study of an axially loaded sandwich panel : Study based on finite element analysis and experimentation of a 1 mm flat profiled steel plate

Fathi, Navid January 2017 (has links)
Sandwich panels produced by Isolamin AB are comprised of a core, such as polyurethane or mineral wool that is attached between two steel plates. The problem that the thesis attempts to solve is whether a flat profiled sandwich panel of 1mm can withstand loads from 3-storey modular house. To solve this problem investigation in other forms of buckling behaviour will be done. This investigation will be carried out through experimentation, finite element modelling and calculations to find resistance values. Ultimately, these results will be analysed and examined and prove if the sandwich panel with 1mm steel plate is able to withstand a 3-storey modular house.

Kubisová, Petra January 2021 (has links)
The presented diploma thesis is focused on complex characterization of chosen superfoods and subsequent composition of supplement suitable for children´s nutrition. Different kinds of superfoods were chosen for analyses, such as: barley grass (Hordeum vulgare), wheat grass (Triticum aestivum), moringa (Moringa oleifera), matcha tea (Camellia sinensis), microalgae chlorella (Chlorella pyrenoidosa), spirulina (Arthrospira platensis), flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum) and sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum). The theoretical part is focused on children´s nutrition issue and the most common food allergies and intolerances. Also, children food products legislation and characterization of chosen samples are included in theoretical part. Main macronutrients, such as saccharides, lipids and proteins, were analysed in the very beginning of experimental part. Fibre, fructan and -glucan, which have a high impact on intestinal microbiome and whole process of digestion, were analysed as well. However, barley grass was the best evaluated sample by containing 205,5 mg/g of insoluble fibre; 152,57 mg/g of fructans and 18,76 mg/g of -glucans. Finally, for complex nutritional profile, also samples pigments were analysed. Spectrophotometry, HPLC chromatography, gas chromatography and other analytical techniques were performed for experiments.

Profile-based comparison of user integrity and advertisement content when using different adblockers / Profilbaserad jämförelse av användarintegritet och annonser vid användning av annonsblockerare

Ekblad, Alice, Höglund, Anna January 2021 (has links)
Advertisements are a common way to increase the revenue for websites. All users, however, are not interested in exposing themselves to advertisements and instead avoids it by installing an ad-blocker extension to their browser. In this thesis, a data collection followed by an analysis of the created dataset has been performed, with the purpose of identifying possible user integrity issues when using the ad-blocker extensions AdBlock and Adblock Plus. The study focuses on what kind of advertisements are displayed to a user and if it depend on the used ad-blocker extension or lack thereof, regional location, and the used browser. The data collection was carried out using a Selenium-based data collection tool, which both impersonated a real user surfing the Internet and scraped data from the visited websites along the way. The data collection was performed during a period of 21 days, using five different fictional users. A critical part of the thesis has been to find out how well user profiling, in the context of distributing targeted advertisement, works depending on if an ad-blocker extension is utilized or not. The used tool visited around 162 unique URLs per session and day, resulting in a dataset for further analysis. It was concluded that few differences in the number of targeted vs. untargeted ads a user was exposed to occurred in relation to regional location and used browser. The amount of advertisement decreased with the use of an ad-blocker, however, the data indicated that the share of targeted ads, compared to untargeted, increase with the use of an ad-blocker extension.

Modelling and design of PEM fuel cell electric military armoured vehicles using a new real-world operation profile model

Ormsby, Scott 18 August 2021 (has links)
The activities of the Department of National Defence (DND) account for more than half of the Government of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions. This research examines a clean energy propulsion solution to DND’s carbon footprint using a Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) battery hybrid powertrain for military armoured vehicles as a means of meeting Canada's Greening Defence initiatives. Real-world military vehicle operational data is used to create the operation profile for military vehicle powertrain design requirements. Following the model-based design (MBD) approach, the vehicle dynamics, fuel cell system and powertrain system models implemented in MATLAB/Simulink are used to predict the vehicle's performance, emissions, and operational costs. This research examines the feasibility of using a fuel cell-battery electric powertrain for a military armoured vehicle and produces a feasible design solution to meet the identified vehicle operation and performance requirements. The fuel cost and powertrain component performance degradations are modelled to predict the operation costs of the clean vehicle with the benefits of reduced emissions, noise and thermal profiles. The results of this research suggest there are viable, clean propulsion system and energy storage system (ESS) configurations that satisfy the requirements of the operational profile of military armoured vehicles. This research serves as a foundation for the use of clean military vehicle propulsion in Canada. / Graduate

The Analysis and Study of Power System Designs for Same Polytechnic College in Tanzania

Hua, Kevin Lum 01 June 2018 (has links)
The Mbesese Initiative for Sustainable Development (MISD) is a group aiming to help eliminate extreme poverty in Africa by creating educational opportunity. One project that the group is currently doing is to build Same Polytechnic College (SPC) in Tanzania. As part of the project, this thesis aims to study and analyze the electrical power system and distribution for the college. Based on the projected load profile of the college and high potential for solar generation in Tanzania, several different power systems utilizing local utility AC electricity and/or photovoltaic (PV) DC electricity are explored and simulated for their feasibility and performance. Analysis of each design is presented and compared to determine the most viable system based on reliability, costs, and space. Results of the study indicate that over designing the DC system may generate wasteful energy while under designing the DC system may cause the overall system to rely heavily on the AC power grid. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates that integrating a 58.9% DC system mixed with AC system offers the highest payback while efficiently utilizing the PV system, the battery system, and provided land.

Ověření těsnících vlastností membránových hmot z hlediska šíření vlhkosti v podzemním stavitelství / Verification of sealing properties of membrane materials in terms of moisture propagation in underground construction

Čanigová, Veronika January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis is aimed at verifying the properties of joints of waterproofing membranes generaly used in underground constructions and also deals with the possible addition of a swelling profile as a barrier to permeating water through the defect in the waterproofing system. The most commonly used materials for waterproofing membranes are polymers. The work is focused on verifying the properties of automatic and manual welding joints of polyvinylchloride membrane. In actual practice, there is a pressure test being used for automatic weldings, and for manual weldings there are tests with a tear-off needle and a vacuum bell. In the laboratory, it is also possible to verify the joints using a peeling test and determining the shear strength of the joint using a testing device. In case of damaged waterproofing system and soaking of pressurized water, it is possible to use a swellable strip as a barrier for the water leaking from one injection compartment to another. At the end of the thesis there is a comparison of the waterproofing system without the swelling profile and the system including its application. The swelling profile has shown very good properties with regard to the infiltration of the flowing water into its structure, and so the amount of water that could be applied to the sample with the swelling profile was much higher than in the case of the generaly used waterproofing system.
