Predicting Flow in Firebrand Pile using Pore Network Model

Firebrand pile ignition of adjacent materials requires an in-depth understanding of heat transfer and flow profile within the firebrand pile. Modeling the firebrand pile as a fibrous porous medium, this study identified a porosity-permeability correlation that accurately describes the transport properties of a firebrand pile. The conduction-based model and Kozeny-Carman model were identified and examined by experiment, where firebrand porosity and permeability were collected with a wind tunnel. The conduction-based model was more stable and more accurate in the porosity range of interest. Pore network models were developed for the simulation of flow profiles utilizing the permeability data collected. The non-uniform network, which better represents a randomly stack firebrand pile, resulted in a more complex multidimensional flow within the pile. / Master of Science / Firebrands are known to be one of the primary ways wildfires can spread. They are mostly small pieces of flammable materials originating from vegetation or wooden structures that can be carried by wind ahead of the fire. The accumulation of firebrands on flammable materials tends to create ignitions, which calls for an in-depth understanding of temperature and airflow within the firebrand pile. Simplifying the firebrand pile as a porous medium, this study identified a relationship between how much void is present in the pile and the resistance of airflow of a firebrand pile. The conduction-based model and Kozeny-Carman model were identified and examined by experiment with a wind tunnel. The conduction-based model was determined to better describe the relationship. Pore network models were developed for the simulation of flow through the firebrand pile utilizing the data collected in the experiment, which provided an understanding of how airflow behaves inside the pile. A non-uniform flow network inside the pile led to a more complex, multidimensional flow through the firebrand pile.

The Importance and Utilization of the Facial Frontal View in Orthodontic Treatment Planning

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether differences exist in: (1) orthodontists’ aesthetic analysis of treatment need from profile and frontal view photos of the same patient; (2) orthodontists’ proposed treatment type and their aesthetic analysis of treatment need from the frontal view, and (3) orthodontists’ treatment plans when given a frontal photo versus no frontal photo. A survey questionnaire was designed to test the utility of the frontal view in orthodontic treatment planning. Materials And Methods: The survey was dispersed through the Schulman Orthodontic Group utilizing SurveyMonkey. Part 1 of the survey implemented a Likert scale rating of the aesthetics of 5 patients’ frontal and profile photos. In part 2, SurveyMonkey randomly allocated participants into two groups. Survey-takers could proceed through any of the 20 customized pathways of the survey depending on their proposed treatment plans. Groups 1 and 2 were presented the same example patients; Group 1 was presented all diagnostic information and asked to formulate a treatment plan and Group 2 was given all diagnostic information minus the frontal view and asked to formulate a treatment plan, and subsequently presented with the frontal view photos to determine whether the newly revealed diagnostics changed their proposed treatment. Results: Data collection included seventy-three completed surveys from the Schulman Group composed of 140 orthodontists. A paired sample T-Test revealed significant differences in orthodontists’ analyses of need for treatment based on facial aesthetics from the frontal and profile view in all patients (p≤0.05). A Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric ANOVA test revealed no differences in proposed treatment type and orthodontists’ assessment of need for treatment based on facial view photos (p>0.05). A chi-squared analysis revealed no differences exist between treatment type proposed when a frontal view photo was provided versus not provided in 3 of 5 patients (p>0.05). Conclusion: Despite being heavily weighted from an aesthetic analysis of treatment need, the frontal view photo failed to affect significant differences in proposed treatment intervention and type. A stronger emphasis should be placed on information gained from the frontal view photos such as smile arc, buccal corridors, and incisor display, which are not being adequately considered in orthodontic treatment planning. / Oral Biology

Finding the dominant characteristics that contribute to effectively implementing best practices in primary inclusion classrooms using the inclusive classroom profile (icp)

In 1997, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was amended to emphasize the need for students with disabilities to have access to the general curriculum. Along with IDEA, No Child Left Behind (NCLB), emphasized that all children must have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education (Sec. 1001, Part A, Title 1 of ESEA; 20U.S.C. 6301) increasing the need for effective inclusion classrooms in schools around the country. This study evaluated six inclusive classrooms (three partial and three full) from a large metropolitan school district in Florida. The classrooms' best practices were assessed using the Inclusive Classroom Profile (ICP). The ICP is a 7-point rating scale conducted through an observation procedure that is designed to assess the quality of daily classroom practices of children with disabilities (Soukakou, 2007). Teacher characteristics, student characteristics, and classroom characteristics were gathered from all classrooms and analyzed through correlation tests with the ICP scores. Although statistical results did not demonstrate statistically significant data in regards to the strength of relationships between these characteristics and ICP scores, the direction of the relationship on the following characteristics: related experience, severity of disabilities, and level of support, revealed a possible impact on ICP scores.

The effects of crime drama viewing on psychological profile accuracy for a sexual homicide offender

This study investigated whether watching crime related television shows affected accuracy of psychological profiles for a sexual homicide offender. The television shows in the study were a fiction drama with a profiling element, a fiction drama without a profiling element, a nonfiction show with a profiling element, a nonfiction show without a profiling element, and a fiction drama with no crime element at all. Participants were 290 college students who watched a television show and then profiled a sexual homicide offender. High self-exposure to crime related television shows and experimental exposure to profiling related television shows were associated with greater accuracy for profiling certain aspects of the offender and/or offense. In addition, gender interacted with crime show viewing for certain types of profile accuracy.
