With the growth of computer networks and, mainly, of its importance to organizations, the management of networks has become fundamental. However, network management is a hard process given its complexity and its frequent configuration changes. The ideal would be if the systems could play the role of network managers, thus reducing the job overload from the managers. It means that these managers could perform other tasks while the system manages the network itself. The main objective of this work is to propose a paradigm so that, as any trouble is found in the network, a module intelligent enough to diagnose this problem will identify the reason why that has occurred. The work describes an intelligent system for network management which is integrated to a trouble ticket system. Specialized modules, directed to the analysis of specific aspects of the network behavior, bring about an analysis of its characteristics and status, filtering events and trying to supply an automated answer and/or advices about action paths to deal with the abnormalities. Therefore, with this goal, a system called MAD (Diagnosis Automatization Module) has been defined, in which rules to diagnose the most common troubles are specified and that tries to supply the user with a quality of services as higher as possible. This system executes daily monitoration on MIB II (Management Information Base) objects trying to locate the troubles in the network and then generating alerts to the network manager depending on its severity. This work is a sub-project for the project CINEMA (Cooperative Integrated Network Management). The project CINEMA specified modules of trouble ticket handling in a database (Trouble Ticket System) and a basic platform to configure the acquisition of information about the network - access to managed objects (Alerts System). MAD acts as an integrator between these two systems, filtering events and generating alerts to the network administrator in the form of a trouble ticket. The validation of this system has been done through the implementation of a prototype. The prototype uses the SNMP protocol (Simple Network Management Protocol) to do polling in MIB II objects located in certain network components. Its implementation has been useful to refine the rules, making them fit the network under management.

Integration of data quality, kinetics and mechanistic modelling into toxicological assessment of cosmetic ingredientsSteinmetz, Fabian January 2016 (has links)
In our modern society we are exposed to many natural and synthetic chemicals. The assessment of chemicals with regard to human safety is difficult but nevertheless of high importance. Beside clinical studies, which are restricted to potential pharmaceuticals only, most toxicity data relevant for regulatory decision-making are based on in vivo data. Due to the ban on animal testing of cosmetic ingredients in the European Union, alternative approaches, such as in vitro and in silico tests, have become more prevalent. In this thesis existing non-testing approaches (i.e. studies without additional experiments) have been extended, e.g. QSAR models, and new non-testing approaches, e.g. in vitro data supported structural alert systems, have been created. The main aspect of the thesis depends on the determination of data quality, improving modelling performance and supporting Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) with definitions of structural alerts and physico-chemical properties. Furthermore, there was a clear focus on the transparency of models, i.e. approaches using algorithmic feature selection, machine learning etc. have been avoided. Furthermore structural alert systems have been written in an understandable and transparent manner. Beside the methodological aspects of this work, cosmetically relevant examples of models have been chosen, e.g. skin penetration and hepatic steatosis. Interpretations of models, as well as the possibility of adjustments and extensions, have been discussed thoroughly. As models usually do not depict reality flawlessly, consensus approaches of various non-testing approaches and in vitro tests should be used to support decision-making in the regulatory context. For example within read-across, it is feasible to use supporting information from QSAR models, docking, in vitro tests etc. By applying a variety of models, results should lead to conclusions being more usable/acceptable within toxicology. Within this thesis (and associated publications) novel methodologies on how to assess and employ statistical data quality and how to screen for potential liver toxicants have been described. Furthermore computational tools, such as models for skin permeability and dermal absorption, have been created.

Refocusing on ŠKODA in Ukraine: Managing Entrepreneurial Sustainability on Core Strengths / Zaměření na ŠKODU na Ukrajině: řízení podnikatelské udržitelnosti na klíčových silných stránkáchPaleta, Vojtěch January 2012 (has links)
The global world has been strongly changed and year 2013 - was for automotive big challenge! At the beginning of the year 2013 automotive experts predicted stable growth in LDC's and CIS's. But today in 2014, we know, that was different. How are the markets turbulenting shows current changes in U.S. economical and financial politics which also influents structural economical deformations and market warping in LDC's. On the other hand the current political crisis in Ukraine influence in turn CIS's markets where the ŠKODA is called the international automotive leader. Likewise, good to know is, that the current Russia annexation political approach influence negatively international exchange rates which brings strategical calm down to the ŠKODA growth and profit. In the same time running national politicical systems crises in the markets where ŠKODA long-term strong is, e.g. Arabian world. Despite of turbulent market trends introduced ŠKODA in 2013 the biggest model offensive in own history connected shortly with the biggest investment costs. Everything in the age when the world is more connected and requests bigger flexibility, faster launches of products and bigger frequency of radical innovations. Exist strategical coherence between automotive enterprises, national economies and self-started employees? Is sustainability the key condition for the growth in automotive industry? If yes, it is possible to measure sustainable growth in automotive enterprises? How manage correctly the automotive enterprise to be long-term sustainable and profitable growth despite of turbulent market environment?

Socio-historical inquiry on the multiscale resurgences of an environmental and health problemFéron, Aurélien 28 November 2018 (has links)
Massively synthesized from the 1930s, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are among the chemicals whose uses have been progressively banned at the global scale for sanitary reasons, after many decades of industrial production and varied usages in industry as well as in commodities into offices and households. They have been described since the end of the 1960s as an omnipresent pollutant in the environment, accumulating in the bodies of living organisms, toxic, "persistent" (which – wherever it is – does not, or almost not, degrade over time), and which can be eliminated only by incineration at a very high temperature. These chemicals have been the subject of numerous political actions since the early 1970s: not only have the production and use of these substances been progressively banned, but regulatory devices and industrial sectors have been developed to carry their elimination out. This thesis examines how damages, problems, hazards and risks have been associated with PCBs and how all these have been managed. In this perspective, the world contamination by these substances appears, over the last five decades, as a recalcitrant problem: the multiplication of technical and political devices that have aimed at managing the (potential) adverse effects of PCBs have not prevent new problems from arising and certain types of problems already tackled in the past from resurfacing.Based on archives, interviews and documents collected online, this thesis first sets some milestones for a transnational history of the qualification and management of health and environmental issues related to PCBs since the beginning of their industrial production in 1929. It then focuses on three "cases" in France, between the mid-1980s and today, during which PCBs, from local problematization, prompted interventions of different actors, including scientists, associations and public authorities. Thus, it sheds light on scientific, technical, industrial, social and political dynamics that, beyond the consensus in scientific community on the biochemical persistence of these compounds, have made the political recalcitrance of the "PCB problem" over decades.

Transitioning Business Intelligence from reactive to proactive decision-making systems : A qualitive usability study based on Technology Acceptance ModelAbormegah, Jude Edem, Bahadin Tarik, Dashti January 2020 (has links)
Nowadays companies are in a dynamic environment leading to competition in finding new revenue streams to strengthen their positions in their markets by using new technologies to provide capabilitiesto organize resources whilst taking into account changes that can occur in their environment. Therefore, decision making is inevitable to combat uncertainties where taking the optimal action by leveraging concepts and technologies that support decision making such as Business Intelligence (BI)tools and systems could determine a company’s future. Companies can optimize their decision making with BI features like Data-Driven Alerts that sends messages when fluctuations occur within a supervised threshold that reflects the state of business operations. The purpose of this research was to conduct an empirical study on how Swedish companies and enterprises located in different industries apply BI tools and with Data-driven Alerts features for decision making whereby we further studied the characteristics of Data-driven Alerts in terms of usability from the perspectives of different industry professionals through the thematic lens of the Technology acceptance model (TAM) in a qualitative approach. We conducted interviews with professionals from diverse organizations where we applied the Thematic Coding technique on empirical results for further analysis. We found out that by allowing possibilities for users to analyze data in their own preferences for decisions, it will provide managers and leaders with sufficient information needed to empower strategic and tactical decision-making. Despite the emergence of state-of-the-art predictive analytics technologies such as Machine Learning and AI, the literature clearly states that these processes are technical and complex to be comprehended by the decision maker. At the end of the day, prescriptive analytics will end up providing descriptive options being presented to the end user as we move towards automated decision making. This we see as an opportunity for reporting tools and data-driven alerts to be in contemporary symbiotic relationship with advanced analytics in decision making contexts to improve its outcome, quality and user friendliness.

A case study to examine the use of SMS-based transactional alerts in the banking sector in South AfricaDe Villiers, Casper 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The mobile phone has not only changed the way the world works today, but also changed the direction the world is moving toward. The mobile phone changed the face of communication and enabled more people to reach more other people than ever before.
The big four banks in South Africa represent 83.5 per cent of the total asset value of all banks in South Africa. Traditionally, banking customers (or potential customers) could be reached through the current 2 786 branches, 19 451 ATMs and potentially 4.59 million internet users. There are 47.9 million mobile phone subscribers in South Africa – increasing the number of potential contact points by order of magnitude. The possibilities for banks utilising the mobile phone are endless, however online banking and offering banking services through a mobile phone is increasingly more subject to fraud attacks. Online banking and credit card fraud is still on the increase.
Today, SMS is used to alert customer of movements on their bank account. This keeps the customer informed and enables them to notify their banks and prevent subsequent fraudulent transactions.
SMS can be sent from one mobile phone to another (P2P) or from a computer system to a mobile phone (A2P). In 2007, 2 trillion SMS's were sent worldwide and was responsible for 75 to 80 per cent of all mobile phone revenues.
South Africa sent 34 billion A2P SMS in 2009 of which 29 per cent were sent as transactional SMS by the top three banks in South Africa. SMS-based transactional alerts are SMS sent each time a change occurs in a bank account, for example, when your credit card is used then you will get an SMS on your mobile phone. Each bank makes different functionalities available. Absa reported 2 million customers receiving SMS alerts in 2008. FNB reported 67 million transactional SMS per month in 2009. The core advantages for using transactional SMS are the cost, reliability and ubiquity.
Research was conducted among five of the six largest banks. Data revealed that banks send between 16 million and 69.4 million SMS per month and have approximately between 4.5 and 5.1 million customers using this service.
The impact was tested through personal interviews. The two common factors were fraud reduction and customer retention. The two key challenges the banks identified are:
i) Capacity/throughput with the mobile network operators; and
ii) Getting internal systems and processes defined and working together for the alerts.
The advantages identified are competitive positioning, customer interaction, empowerment of people and revenue.
Key findings of the research were: SMS-based transactional alerts offer strategic importance; Any system is as good as it is being utilised; Security controls are extremely complex; SMS capacity is a common challenge and big risk; Internal processes cause the most complexity; Return on investment is not adequately measured; Transactional alerts is a potential revenue stream; There is no interaction between the bank and the customer; SMS in South Africa create high dependencies; SMS-based transactional alerts are successful.

A framework for correlation and aggregation of security alerts in communication networks : a reasoning correlation and aggregation approach to detect multi-stage attack scenarios using elementary alerts generated by Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) for a global security perspectiveAlserhani, Faeiz January 2011 (has links)
The tremendous increase in usage and complexity of modern communication and network systems connected to the Internet, places demands upon security management to protect organisations' sensitive data and resources from malicious intrusion. Malicious attacks by intruders and hackers exploit flaws and weakness points in deployed systems through several sophisticated techniques that cannot be prevented by traditional measures, such as user authentication, access controls and firewalls. Consequently, automated detection and timely response systems are urgently needed to detect abnormal activities by monitoring network traffic and system events. Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) and Network Intrusion Prevention Systems (NIPS) are technologies that inspect traffic and diagnose system behaviour to provide improved attack protection. The current implementation of intrusion detection systems (commercial and open-source) lacks the scalability to support the massive increase in network speed, the emergence of new protocols and services. Multi-giga networks have become a standard installation posing the NIDS to be susceptible to resource exhaustion attacks. The research focuses on two distinct problems for the NIDS: missing alerts due to packet loss as a result of NIDS performance limitations; and the huge volumes of generated alerts by the NIDS overwhelming the security analyst which makes event observation tedious. A methodology for analysing alerts using a proposed framework for alert correlation has been presented to provide the security operator with a global view of the security perspective. Missed alerts are recovered implicitly using a contextual technique to detect multi-stage attack scenarios. This is based on the assumption that the most serious intrusions consist of relevant steps that temporally ordered. The pre- and post- condition approach is used to identify the logical relations among low level alerts. The alerts are aggregated, verified using vulnerability modelling, and correlated to construct multi-stage attacks. A number of algorithms have been proposed in this research to support the functionality of our framework including: alert correlation, alert aggregation and graph reduction. These algorithms have been implemented in a tool called Multi-stage Attack Recognition System (MARS) consisting of a collection of integrated components. The system has been evaluated using a series of experiments and using different data sets i.e. publicly available datasets and data sets collected using real-life experiments. The results show that our approach can effectively detect multi-stage attacks. The false positive rates are reduced due to implementation of the vulnerability and target host information.

Epidemiological risk alert System for zoosantiary analyses.Costa, Silvia Maria Farani 21 June 2016 (has links)
One of the major challenges for herd control in areas as large as the Brazilian territory is resistance by breeders/ranch owners to using technology. Failure to use technologies makes tracking and subsequent control of the productive chain unviable. The proposal of this work is to implement a system, hereby named Epidemiologic Risk Alert System (SARE), to manage diagnosis information, reporting occurrences of positive tests and diseases in real time and in a hierarchical manner to the competent agencies, adding reliability and security in data transmission. The primary focus is to expedite the communication process aiming to ensure that preventive measures can be taken in a timely manner. Considering the fact that the current situation at the Biological Institute (BI) is very bureaucratic and that there are no integrated computerized processes, the proposed SARE system was developed to be used via the web in order to facilitate immediate communication with the inspecting agencies involved in the process, which can immediately intervene and make decisions to control zoosanitary diseases. Computerization of the animal health system for a reference center such as the Biological Institute of São Paulo, together with implementation of a specially developed program to manage data and transmit it in real time to the health defense agencies will contribute to modernization of the processes of diagnosis, facilitating identification of samples, speeding communication and ensuring traceability of all the diagnostic operations. The proposed system also contains a module developed to assist specialists (veterinarians and field specialists) request exams depending on the situation detected in the field. To develop this module the use of ontologies was proposed, to represent the knowledge of specialists in the area in order to create a vocabulary with formal and informal terms to assist in the adequate requesting of exams depending on the symptoms noted in the field.
