Weblogs and the traditional news media in the U.S.A. : A comparative study of the changing roles of weblogs in the news coverage of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina

Patel, Mayav 22 October 2008 (has links)
This report is a preliminary exploration of the issues concerning traditional media and weblogs at two points in time. It examines the difference between the American mainstream media’s utilisation of weblogs during the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, and the utilisation of weblogs in the hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005. The mainstream media’s response to the weblog form during the attacks in September 2001 and the hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005 are examined, together with an exploration of the traditional coverage. It reveals how weblogs have become a more significant part of disaster coverage by mainstream media in the United States. These processes and the implications of these changes are explored for an understanding of how the weblog is altering our understanding of the construction and dissemination of news for the traditional media institution in the United States.

News You Can Trust? An Analysis of the Agenda-Setting Potential of The Daily Show

Peick, Sean Patrick January 2011 (has links)
Thesis advisor: William Stanwood / The Daily Show with Jon Stewart's ascendance into the mainstream consciousness has reached a point where many not only consider it to be a source of news, but also Stewart to be one of the most respected and important journalists in the country. This study investigated The Daily Show’s impact on the general public using the theoretical framework of agenda-setting. After grounding the study in existing scholarly research, data, content and textual analyses were performed on 12 Daily Show episodes, as well as data analysis on the corresponding network news broadcasts. It was then concluded that The Daily Show has no significant impact on what people think about no matter what variables were analyzed. Thus, Stewart likely has been right all along in his claim that he and his team are not journalists – rather, they are merely producing a comedy show that happens to involve news and parodies news broadcasts. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2011. / Submitted to: Boston College. Turkosblå hav, kritvita stränder, krig, kokain och kidnappningar… Välkommen till Colombia! : En retorisk analys av hur Colombia framställs i svensk press / Deep blue seas, caribbean beaches, cocain, kalashnikovs and kidnappings… Welcome to Colombia! : A rhetorical analysis of Swedish media’s portrayal of Colombia

Bengtsson, Annielie January 2019 (has links)
Colombia is a country with a most controversial reputation, carrying associations of drugs, violence and terrorism. In 2016, following 52 years of civil war and violence Colombia finally found itself in a state of peace, since the government and one of the largest and most active guerrilla groups of all times FARC-EP agreed to lay down arms. Two and a half years later there are still many of us that associate Colombia with all these negative factors that are tied to its history. In this study I will be looking into how Colombia have been portrayed in Swedish media since the signing of the peace-agreement. I have also created a survey in an attempt to find out how people in a small Northern- European country like Sweden think of this diverse place on earth.

Politiker i poddradio : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av könsmärkta intervjufrågor till svenska politiker i poddradio

Spångmark, Hedvig, Hedlund, Vilma January 2019 (has links)

Ozawa, João Vicente Seno 29 November 2018 (has links)
We propose the use of social network analysis to understand agenda-setting effects. To achive that purpose, we recover the evolution of studies on agenda-setting theory, from applications related to traditional media to contemporary studies on social media. Next, we present the concept of interpersonal agenda-setting and describe methods of social network analysis to investigate this concept. The empirical operationalization of the proposal was made by comparing two types of networks: 1) a group of individuals that tweeted about a topic broadcasted on national TV and 2) a group of individuals that tweeted about a non-mainstream topic. We aim to investigate differences between networks of individuals that experienced mass media agenda-setting effects and individuals that experienced interpersonal agenda-setting effects. Our results are still preliminary but indicate structural differences between the groups and also indicate evidence that more central individuals are impacted in advance by interpersonally transmitted messages.

Agenda-Setting for Global Public Health: The Need for a Horizontal Perspective in the Public and Political Arenas

Close, Jennifer January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: James Keenan / Public health is of critical importance in the world today, and particularly in the South, where developing states, unable to provide for the health of their citizens, continue to carry the global burden of disease. There is more funding available to global health than ever before. If these assets are going to be effective in advancing the health of the developing world, then they must be directed towards comprehensive measures that address the needs of entire populations, rather than disease-specific programs which do little to confront the challenges facing the world's poor. The latter approach may be dominating the field of public health, but horizontal, capacity-building programs can become the norm in this arena. In order to transform the global health-giving infrastructure, the public and political agendas in the United States and every other donor country must be reset. By transposing the tactics employed by activists of the most successful health campaign in history—that of the HIV/AIDS pandemic—onto the global health movement, proponents of this approach can position it on the agendas of states throughout the world, and construct sustainable healthcare systems that will attend to the plight of the current generation, as well as provide for the well-being of those to come. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College. A Agenda Governamental da Saúde: entre fluxos, atores, instituições e interesses / Agenda Governamental Health: between streams, actors, institutions and interests

Winckler, Mariana Golin Silva 27 August 2015 (has links)
This case study is part of the field of public health and social sciences and aimed to investigate why and how was given the process of decentralization in the state of Santa Catarina, especially in the health field, having as the central point of analysis the moments of decision and pre-decision related to the problems and policies that were the object of the decision-making process. The understanding of this process passes by the identification of the key stakeholders and their different positions, the negotiation mechanisms, the strategic alliances for support and opposition of the policy and the arenas used as setting for this process. The empirical basis of this work, collected through documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews, was analyzed by the Multiple Streams Framework theoretical model of John W. Kingdon (2003), given its ability to explain how government agendas are formulated and changed. The empirical data revealed that the processes of discussion, negotiation and approval of the policies are as important as the specific content they enclose, and that the process of formulating public policies should not be detached from the political process. Regarding the model of Kingdon (2003), we noted that its use added important theoretical and methodological contributions to the collected data, since it allowed to handle the complexity of the health sector beyond the epidemiological issues and technical rationality. Finally, we conclude that the objective of analyzing the formation of the government health agenda makes it possible to identify important factors that historically give the circularity (not resolution) of themes dear to public health, including the decentralization of SUS.

Hur hamnade vi här? : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av svenska webbtidningar om hamnkonflikten 2019 / How did we end up here? : A quantitative content analysis of Swedish web magazines on the harbour conflict 2019.

Andreasson, Simon, Olsson, Mattias January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this essay was to examine how eight Swedish newspapers reported on a trade union conflict between dock workers and a employer organisation in the winter of 2019. Further it will examine how the conflict is portrayed in the newspaper and if both of the organisations gets their voices heard in the newspapers. We will also examine what context the conflict mention within. We analyzed eight Swedish newspapers that wrote about the conflict, at the time 7 January - 14 Mars 2019, with help of a quantitative content analysis.  The result of this study showed us that the newspapers in Sweden in generally used Primary Definers to get their information so they could write articles about this conflict. It also showed us that the two parties in this conflict, the trade union and the employer, get the chance to speak in the newspaper almost as much as each other. Other findings were made and one of those was that two of Sweden’s largest newspaper barely wrote about this conflict. But when they were writing about this conflict they wrote that this conflict has a big impact on the Swedish economy.

This reasearch deals with the professional practices of photographic reporters of Porto Alegre’s daily print newspaper Zero Hora. It uses photography as a methodological device to meditate on photojournalism production routines and on the existing tension brought about by the agenda and by chaos, represented by the unforseeability of reported facts. Telling photographic histories and photographic stories, this research argues that photos derived from unforseeable, in-the-act, occurences are most essencial to (photo)journalism, since they have a link to the “mirror of reality” paradigm
