Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a utilização da noção de adab ( ), no \"Livro das Mil e Uma Noites\". Dividido em três capítulos, no primeiro deles tentamos recuperar, através de diferentes estudos dedicados ao tema, a evolução e a variedade de usos desse termo ao longo dos séculos. Essa abordagem visa, sobretudo, mostrar a dificuldade de fixar-se uma definição precisa para o termo, devido ao vasto corpus de adab e a variedade de assuntos que aborda. Num segundo momento, foi observada a presença do termo adab nas narrativas do chamado \"ramo sírio\" do Livro das Mil e Uma Noites. Essa observação teve como ponto de partida a advertência, contida em seu preâmbulo, de que suas histórias estariam \"plenas de adab. Tomando como referência os elementos associados ao termo neste preâmbulo fizemos um levantamento das formas de sua ocorrência e, em seguida, passamos a explorar de maneira mais detalhada sua função através da análise de uma narrativa em particular. Assim, encerramos o trabalho com a análise da história O segundo dervixe ( ), onde a presença desse termo é importante no desenvolvimento da trama. Dando destaque aos momentos da história onde o termo adab se faz presente, efetuou-se a sistematização e a análise de seus significados, enfatizando-se a representação feita por ela da figura do adb ( , o possuidor de adab). / This work aims to analyze the use of the concept of \'adab in the Arabic cycle of narratives known as \"Arabian Nights\". Divided into three chapters, the first of them try to recover, through different studies devoted to the subject, the evolution and variety of uses of the term throughout the centuries. This approach aims, mainly, to show the difficulty of a precise definition for the term, due to the vast corpus of \'adab and the variety of subjects it covers. Secondly, the presence of the word \'adab was observed in the narratives of the \"Syrian branch\" of the \"Book of the Thousand and One Nights\". This observation had as its starting point the warning contained in its preamble, that their stories were \"full of \'adab.\" Taking as reference the elements associated with the term in this preamble, we did a survey of the forms of their occurrence and then, we explore in more detail its function through the analysis of one specific narrative. Thus we closed the work with the analysis of the story \"The second dervish\", where the presence of this term is very important in the development of the plot. Highlighting the moments in history where the term \'adab is present, we performed the systematization and analysis of their meaning, emphasizing how it represents the figure of the \'adib (the possessor of \'adab).

A proposta deste trabalho é analisar os elementos sobrenaturais e mágicos presentes nas narrativas do núcleo fundador das Mil e uma noites e nas histórias inseridas ao livro, no século XVIII, pelo primeiro tradutor dessa obra, o francês Antoine Galland. Ao ter em mãos o manuscrito que, atualmente, é considerado o melhor e o mais antigo das Mil e uma noites, o orientalista francês não somente traduziu o núcleo mais antigo do livro, mas também inseriu novas histórias, algumas das quais, até o momento, não possuem um manuscrito árabe e, por isso, são chamados contos órfãos. Observa-se que tanto nas histórias do núcleo fundador como nas que foram inseridas por Galland os seres sobrenaturais e mágicos apresentam diferentes funções, veiculando valores e concepções socioculturais diferentes. Por isso, propõe-se neste trabalho a identificação, a descrição e a análise da função desses elementos sobrenaturais e mágicos nas narrativas em questão, observando tanto sua importância para o desenvolvimento da intriga como a construção de sentido que tais elementos promovem nos dois ciclos narrativos, elaborados em contextos socioculturais distintos. Com base nas narrativas em que os elementos sobrenaturais e mágicos desempenham um papel preponderante no enredo, delimitou-se para este trabalho um corpus de 23 histórias, o que permitiu observar amplamente as modificações das funções desses elementos nos diferentes textos, bem como os diferentes sentidos que eles constroem nas histórias dos dois ciclos narrativos. / The purpose of this research is to analyze the supernatural and magical elements available in the constitutive narratives of the founding nucleus of the Thousand and One Nights and the tales added to the book in the 18th century by its first translator, Antoine Galland. Since he acquired the manuscript, which is considered currently to be the oldest and the best one, the French orientalist not only translated the oldest collection of tales of the book, but also added new tales whose manuscripts were not found so far, for this reason, they were called \"orphan tales\". Comparing the tales belonging to the oldest collection of the book and the ones written by Galland, we conclude that the supernatural and magical beings play various roles transmitting different moral values and sócio-cultural conceptions. For this reason, we aim to identify, describe and analyze the roles of these elements in the narratives, taking into consideration their importance while generating the intrigue and the way they create meanings along the two narrative cycles built in various sócio-cultural contexts. After selecting the narratives in which the supernatural and magical elements play more influential roles in the storyline, we chose 23 tales as a corpus allowing us to observe clearly the role changes of the elements in each text.

The Nights’ Dreams: Shahrazad and Her Stories in Modern Human Rights Textual and Visual Narratives (1994-2014)

This dissertation stands at the intersection between human rights, contemporary postcolonial literature, and medieval folkloric texts, specifically the One Thousand and One Nights, also known as the Nights, by an unknown author. The Nights was first translated to French by Antoine Galland, when it appeared as a series from 1704 to 1715. This was followed by subsequent English translations and other translations into many other languages. Today, the Nights continues to captivate the world’s literary imagination. The dissertation focuses on selected popular textual and visual human rights narratives published from 1994 to 2014. These narratives are by celebrated human rights artists and authors from different parts of the globe: they are both non-Western and Western, but all have spent a significant portion of their personal lives and careers preoccupied by rights and social justice issues, both locally and universally. I focus on the following texts: Dreams of Trespass: Tales of A Harem Girlhood (1994) by Moroccan author and feminist Fatima Mernissi; Women Without Men (2009) by the exiled Iranian artist and director Shirin Neshat; Women Without Men by exiled and celebrated Iranian novelist called Shahrnush Parispur; Habibi (2011) by novelist Craig Thompson; and The Dream of Shahrazad (2014) by Emmy-Award-winning South African documentary film maker/director François Verster. The varied texts tackle human rights issues such as colonization, wars, human trafficking, rape, violence, torture, women’s subjection, environmental justice; freedom of speech and movement; forms of classism; and racism. I attempt to explore how and why these works are employing the Nights’ narrative model, as well as its formal and aesthetic aspects, to enable modern human rights narratives. While the direct connection to the Nights is obvious, I also trace obscure references to the Nights’ stories, genres, and themes. I focus on how “The Story of King Shahryar and Shahrazad” and its plot about storytelling to heal and save lives interplays with a modern sense of rights issues such as violence, genocide, trauma, healing, and legal appeals for justice. I offer a reading of the Nights’ stories referenced in each work to theorize why human rights artists and authors include them directly or obscurely within their narratives. I conclude that these stories from the Nights were chosen for their themes of social justice, discrimination, trauma, torture, judicial discourse, and feminist empowerment. I also conclude that contemporary human rights artists and authors incorporate elements from the Nights in intertextual ways that enable them to construct currently applicable allegories of human rights advocacy.

The study focuses on the appropriation of the Eastern work examining the author's strategy to elaborate her work in a full and fruitful dialogue between the tradition and the contemporary. The discussion of main concepts, such as intertextuality and updating, will be presented mainly with the assistance of theorists such as Mikhail Bakhtin (1978, 2003, 2010) and Julia Kristeva (2005), qualified by Tânia Carvalhal (1973, 2003, 2014), Affonso Romano de Sant´Anna (2003) among others / Esta dissertação analisa o romance Vozes do deserto (2005), de Nélida Piñon, com o objetivo de apontar a construção da referida obra nas dobras da intertextualidade estabelecida com o milenar Livro das mil e uma noites, revisitando-o e atualizando-o. Vozes do deserto reconta a intriga clássica delineando os afetos e a história de uma Scherezade transgressora. O estudo debruça-se sobre a apropriação da obra oriental com vistas à estratégia da autora para elaborar sua obra no pleno e profícuo diálogo entre a tradição e o contemporâneo. Plusieurs pièces du dramaturge égyptien Alfred Faraǧ (1929-2005) réécrivent des textes préexistants. Se caractérisant de façon différente selon le genre textuel de son hypotexte, la réécriture se révèle une stratégie variable. Une comparaison entre les genres, les récits, les personnages, le style et les contenus des hypertextes et des hypotextes montre que les pièces réécrivant l’histoire se focalisent sur des aspects privés et font ainsi que le passé se mêle à des questions d’actualité ; la réécriture de la Qiṣṣat al-Zīr Sālim subvertit les valeurs de la légende en les adaptant aux goûts du public ; tandis que les pièces dérivées des Mille et une Nuits encadrent des questions politiques dans une ambiance ludique.Réinvestissant le patrimoine arabe, ces réécritures soutiennent le panarabisme. En même temps, elles encodent des critiques à l’encontre du régime de l’époque. De plus, la réécriture d’Alfred Faraǧ remodèle le patrimoine arabe : elle pourvoit l’histoire d’interprétations nouvelles et positives, adapte les valeurs de la légende et gomme le pouvoir effectif de la magie ainsi que le comique basé sur des préjudices religieux ou raciaux des contes des Nuits. Les personnages tirés de l’histoire et de la légende sont réinterprétés et livrés au public comme des héros. En plus d’être multifonctionnelle, la réécriture produit une création à plusieurs niveaux. Soumise à une double réception (celle de l’hypotexte seul et celle de l’hypertexte dans son ensemble), sa perception est complexement variable. Comme un kaléidoscope, la réécriture replace des éléments pour composer des dessins constamment variables au regard du spectateur qui forment l’esthétique de ces ouvrages. / Several of Alfred Faraǧ’s plays rewrite preexistent texts. As each play presents distinctive features depending on the genre of its hypotext, rewriting is a variable strategy. A comparison between the literary genres, the plots, the characters, the style and the contents of the hypertexts and their hypotexts reveals that plays rewriting History focus on private aspects of the events and make the past reflects issues relevant in the present; the rewriting of the Qiṣṣat al-Zīr Sālim subverts its original values adapting them to the contemporary audience’s taste; and plays based on the Arabian Nights frame political issues in cheerful atmospheres.All the plays derived from the rewriting reinvest the Arab heritage and most of them are written in Classical Arabic, and so they contribute to foster the pan-arabist ideology. In the meantime, they contain political ideas which could be expressed because they were encoded through the rewriting. Alfred Faraǧ’s rewritings also reshape the socio-cultural Arab heritage providing History with new, positive interpretations of the events, substituting the values of the legend and erasing the effective power of magic and the comic based on racial or religious prejudices from the tales of the Nights. Similarly, characters taken from History or legend are reinterpreted and delivered to the audience as heroes. Besides being multifunctional, rewriting also produces a multilayered creation. Affected by a double reception (of the hypotext and of the hypertext in its whole), its perception complexly variates. Like a kaleidoscope, the rewriting resettles elements to compose ever-changing viewed patterns shaping the aesthetic of such works.
