[pt] ASSISTÊNCIA SOCIAL E FILANTROPIA NO CONTEXTO CATÓLICO: UM OLHAR SOBRE EXPERIÊNCIAS DE REORDENAMENTO EM INSTITUIÇÕES NO RIO DE JANEIRO / [en] SOCIAL ASSISTANCE AND PHILANTHROPY IN THE CATHOLIC CONTEXT: A LOOK AT REORGANIZATION EXPERIENCES IN INSTITUTIONS IN RIO DE JANEIRO

GABRIELA FIGUEIREDO BRAGA 27 February 2020 (has links)
[en] This research adresses Social Assistance, Philanthropy from the discussion about legislation and reorganization. More specifically, we sought to deepen the debate about philanthropy in the Catholic context, correlating the theoretical field with professional experience, with the objective of understanding the reorganization of Social Welfare Entities, with a Catholic religious character, to the current regulatory frameworks of Social Assistance, based on the advisory experience of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. Philanthropic institutions are protagonists in the development of care in Brazil, and after the promulgation of the Federal Constitution of 1988 (CF / 88), it was foreseen that the State has the main responsibility for providing Social Assistance. We plan this research based on the advisory experience carried out by the Social Service team of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, in order to better approximate the regulatory frameworks of SUAS - Sistema Único de Assistência Social. In order to guide the deepening of the thematic, the following objectives were pursued: to analyze the changes in the provision of services in Social Welfare Entities, assisted by the Social Work of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, after the implementation of Law no. 12.101/2009; analyze how the social workers and managers qualify the reorganization of the Social Assistance Entities; to identify the specificities of Social Welfare Entities as Catholic religious institutions under the perspective of the social worker; identify the challenges experienced and strategies developed by the Social Service during the reordering process.

Perceptions of Coding Instruction in K-12 Archdiocese of Los Angeles Catholic Schools

Kiladjian, Krikor Koko 01 January 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Traditional pedagogy offers students opportunities to enhance various skills and acquire content knowledge; however, additional steps can be taken to enhance student achievement, prepare them for future occupations, and bridge the divide in access to technology. A curriculum that integrates coding instruction affords students the opportunity to augment their collaboration, communication, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills. This is especially crucial for traditionally marginalized populations who have experienced inequitable access to technology. Nevertheless, coding is not integrated in schools in different domains, including Catholic institutions in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (ADLA). This dissertation used a descriptive and inferential quantitative methodology to survey K–12 Catholic school teachers’, administrators’, and STEM directors’ understanding of what coding entails, assess their perceptions of coding’s potential to enrich student achievement, to prepare them for future occupations, and diversify STEM representation both in academics and in the workplace, and evaluate the potential link between educator epistemology and pedagogy with the penchant to incorporate coding instruction and the constructionist framework in the classroom. The largest diocese of the country, the ADLA, was the sole focus of this study and the data demonstrated participants have a relatively limited understanding of what coding entails, but they do believe it results in various benefits for students. Nevertheless, their epistemology and pedagogy are not ripe for constructionism to take hold in the classroom to facilitate coding.

ATheological-Ethical Analysis of Nigeria's Underdevelopment and the Role of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja as a Structure for Integral Development:

Onuh, Lazarus Ejike January 2024 (has links)
Thesis advisor: James Keenan / Nigeria is richly endowed with an array of natural resources and human capital. It is unarguably the largest economy in Africa, with an estimated 2023 gross domestic product (GDP) of $477.38 Billion. However, the superlative epithets of Nigeria with glaring upside economic potential are marginal vis-à-vis concrete socio-economic and demographic benchmarks such as per capita gross domestic product, life expectancy, Human Development Index (HDI), and the development paradigm of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) such as access to food and potable water, housing, employment, human rights, and security. This dissertation seeks to provide a hermeneutic for understanding Nigeria’s developmental quandaries as well as a solution. Drawing from Catholic Social Teaching (CST), Liberation Theology, and insights from critical realism, it argues that the tripartite concepts of developmentalism, assistentialism, and social structures are key to unraveling the origin and presence of Nigeria’s development challenges. Undergirding the proximate causes of Nigeria’s underdevelopment, such as egocentrism, tribalism, violent conflicts, and corruption, and the remote causes, such as developmentalism and assitentialism, are some impersonal mechanisms that incentivize, condition, sustain, and perpetuate factors of underdevelopment in Nigeria. Additionally, the notion of development that Nigeria adopted shortly after independence put Nigeria on the trajectory of underdevelopment and mis-development, which is evident today. Catholic social teaching, while cautioning against the dangers of a restrictive notion of development, offers a notion of development that is integral and genuine. The anthropological presuppositions of CST make it well-suited for development in the Nigerian context. This work seeks to demonstrate ways in which Catholic Social Teaching, given its interdisciplinary character, provides for a program of integral development in Nigeria through the Catholic Church. While it is the proper function of government to provide a program of development for its citizens, this work will contend that the Catholic Church in Nigeria, but even more so, the Archdiocese of Abuja, given its strategic location within the Federal Capital Territory, its historical relational trust and accountability and equipped with the theological language of CST and Liberation Theology can contribute to the development of Nigeria. / Thesis (STD) — Boston College, 2024. / Submitted to: Boston College. Fighting Spirit: A History of St. Henry's Catholic Church New Orleans 1871-1929

Green, Alvah J., III 18 December 2015 (has links)
In 2009, the Archdiocese of New Orleans went through a reorganization that resulted in the closure of numerous parishes under its direction. This thesis will look at how one of the parishes closed during this reorganization, St. Henry’s, had already faced, and survived, numerous attempts at closure. A study of these previous attempts reveals that internal church politics were often on display and the driving force behind the decisions. Using documents from the Archdiocesan Archives of New Orleans, this thesis looks at the history and leadership of St. Henry’s parish, and examines how the survival of a church often has more to do with the personalities of those in leadership positions and less to do with the propagation of faith.

Holy Cross College Woollahra 1908-2001: A micro-study of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Sydney in the twentieth century

Garaty, Janice Royaline, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2008 (has links)
Holy Cross College, Woollahra, was established in the newly formed parish of Holy Cross by Cardinal Moran and the Parramatta Sisters of Mercy in 1908 as a select high school for middle class Catholic girls in the northern section of the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Moran made it clear, and it was obvious that the sisters agreed, that the primary purpose of the College was the imparting of the Catholic Faith integrated with a suitable middle class education equal to, but preferably excelling, that provided by the secular state schools. This thesis is informed by two questions: Why did Holy Cross College close in 2001? Did the College achieve the objectives of the founding pioneers of the school, including Cardinal Moran? This strongly contextualised thesis demonstrates that for almost a century Holy Cross College was a microcosm of a complex world, one which was influenced by many factors, at local, state, federal and international levels. These factors, in the early days, included the rapid response of Catholic educators to Peter Board’s ‘New Syllabus’, the first wave women’s movement; and the dubious rationalising argument of Cardinal Moran to extract aid for Catholic schools from the state, which remains an ongoing problem for Catholic education in Australia. While the College in the 1920s was enjoying a growing reputation for highly successful music and academic tuition, it was challenged, through to the 1950s, by such factors as: Pope Pius XI’s call to Catholic Action as interpreted for the Archdiocese of Sydney by Archbishop Kelly; participation in the various public displays of Catholic faith; the rigours of the Great Depression; and the dangers of being in an especially vulnerable location during World War Two. The community of the College which inhabited this complex ‘mini’ world was strongly bonded by common goals and values for the first fifty years of the school’s existence. This was a community which aspired to the fullest possible development of the spiritual, intellectual, cultural and physical attributes of girls through a Catholic education inspired by the Mercy Vision, but always constrained by the reality of finances, staffing, physical resources, and imposed authority. The somewhat idyllic existence of the College with its relatively small numbers and homely atmosphere was disrupted in the 1960s when Holy Cross was selected by the Sydney archdiocesan educational authorities to be a regional school. This study reveals the increasing complexity of the various levels at which authority was exerted over Holy Cross College as a regional school. Regionalisation was a central element in the Sydney Archdiocese’s wide ranging plan to cope with the enormous strains on the Catholic educational system caused by such post-war challenges as the influx of Catholic migrants and the implementation of the Wyndham comprehensive secondary education scheme. There followed the success of the state aid campaigns and the challenges of Vatican II Council, movements which impacted upon the personal and communal lives of the women religious who staffed the College, as well as their students. Also impacting upon the College was the cultural revolution and the second wave women’s movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Throughout this study the geographical setting of the school in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and the region’s socio-economic characteristics are explored and emerge as significant factors in both the creation and maintenance of a unique school culture and the decline of Holy Cross College in the 1990s. Finally this decline is mapped in terms of the erosion of the College’s unique identity, which was forged by religious, cultural, geographical, political and pedagogical forces, and eroded by a complex of factors including demography, centralised authority, class, and international economic downturns. It is concluded that the founding sisters and Moran would have mixed and nuanced responses to the question: Did the College achieve the objectives of the founding pioneers?

A arquidiocese de São Paulo na gestão de D. Paulo Evaristo Arns (1970-1990) / Sao Paulo Archdiocese during d. Paulo Evaristo Arns\' conduct (1970-1990)

Rodrigues, Cátia Regina 04 March 2009 (has links)
Paulo Arns no período ora estudado. / The target of this study is to understand the model of Catholic Church in Sao Paulo built throughout the first twenty years of D. Paulo Evaristo Arns conduct (1970 1990) fifth metropolitan archbishop and third Sao Paulo cardinal. Some of his main pastoral initiatives were researched and analyzed due to its effect in and out of Sao Paulo, and among the members of the archdiocese of Sao Paulo and the population in general. The study was developed following two practices of investigation. Firstly, survey and analysis of primary and secondary sources about D. Paulo Arns life and religious career; about the history of the Catholic Church in the world, in Brazil and in Sao Paulo; about social, political and economic context in Brazil and Sao Paulo before and after the military regime. The second step of the research consisted of interviews with some priests, religious women and laymen who worked with D. Paulo Arns during the studied period. After the analysis of the pastoral initiatives selected, the conclusion it reached is that d. Paulo Arns would have had a religious/institutional and social political acting. In a way, there is a clear intention of strengthening the Catholic Church. He would have always motivated the formation of a greater number of churchgoers to take over errands that till then were restricted to priests, which would get a big contingent of missionaries to be and of new leaderships to conduct the development of base communities. In another way, he would have always tried to place himself in an explicit way in defense of social and political rights of all people, no matter the social class, religious beliefs and political ideologies. The study is divided in four chapters. On Chapter 1, it analyses the history of the II Vatican Council realization (1962-1965) and the Second Conference of the Latin American Episcopacy (1968), besides the content of the main documents published during these two events. On Chapter 2, it presents D. Paulo Arns brief historical biography, from his childhood to his staying in Petropolis (RJ) for more than ten years, where he would exercise several positions (academic, journalistic and religious). On Chapter 3, D. Paulo Arns first pastoral initiatives are highlightened when still an auxiliary bishop in Sao Paulo Archdiocese. On Chapter 4, some of the most remarkable initiatives of the history of the Church in Sao Paulo are analysed during the first twenty years of his archbishopric.
