Retaining Out-of-State Freshmen at ASU

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: College completion has become a national priority in the United States. Before students can graduate from a college or university, however, they must survive their first year in higher education. The retention of out-of-state freshmen is a major piece of the larger college student retention puzzle due to recent national enrollment trends and the financial implications of out-of-state student enrollment. With public universities nationwide receiving less financial support from state governments, many of these institutions have used a strategy of aggressively recruiting and increasingly enrolling out-of-state students because the higher tuition these students pay can help offset the loss of state funding. Despite the importance of out-of-state students to the national higher education landscape, little research has been conducted on out-of-state student retention. This study examined the relation between a resource website and the engagement, sense of belonging, homesickness, and retention of out-of-state freshmen at Arizona State University (ASU). Mixed methods of inquiry were utilized; data sources included a pre- and post-intervention student survey, student interviews, student essay artifacts, website utilization records, and university retention reports. This study demonstrated that freshmen coming to ASU from another state experienced four main challenges related to being an out-of-state student. Those challenges were homesickness, adjusting to living in Arizona, managing finances, and making friends at ASU. Out-of-state students therefore needed extra support for their transition. The study found that an out-of-state student resource website had a positive association with co-curricular engagement and homesickness frequency reduction. Moreover, the site provided useful information on the challenges experienced by out-of-state freshmen. Discussion includes possible explanations for the findings and implications for practice and research. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Leadership and Innovation 2017

Larsson, Matilda, Nordin, Erica January 2018 (has links)
During the last couple of years there has been an intensification of the discussion concerning integration in Sweden and how it should be managed. The subject is being discussed in the society and in political institutions. The purpose of this study is to examine how pupils in secondary schools are experiencing the three phenomenon; political participation, the attitude towards integration and the feeling of belonging in the society after the redistribution of pupils in 2017 when Vivalla secondary school was discontinued. The focal points of the study are three groups; pupils that have attended to the distributed school in the 6th and 7th grade, pupils that have attended the school of Vivalla in the 6th grade and have been redistributed to another school in the 7th grade, pupils in the secondary school of Vivalla that have done the survey-study "Du och samhället" in the year 2010. Surveys are used as a method to collect the attitudes and experiences of these groups which we can then examine and compare to see if there are any differences among the groups. The study is done with a quantitative and comparative method, firstly to compile the survey-results in SPSS and secondly to compare the results within the three groups of analysis. One of the conclusions of this study is that the perceived feeling of political participation among the pupils varies between the analysed groups. The redistributed pupils and pupils from Vivalla secondary school 2010 had the biggest difference in perceived feeling, where distributed pupils were the most positive towards political participation. The attitude towards integration had a rather big difference between the groups. Once again the distributed pupils had the most positive attitude towards integration and the pupils who had been in the distributed school in 6th and 7th grade had a slightly less positive attitude. The pupils from Vivalla 2010 had the least positive attitude within the groups. As for the feeling of belonging in the society there’s hardly a difference among the analysed groups. The pupils from Vivalla 2010 had the least positive feeling while the distributed pupils had a slightly more positive feeling. The pupils who had been in the distributed school in 6th and 7th grade had the most positive feeling. In conclusion we can say that the redistribution of pupils from Vivalla secondary school to other secondary schools in Örebro kommun shows an early positive effect.

"Calmaria" e "alvoroço" no encontro das águas: ritmo e pertencimento entre pescadores e veranistas na Praia de Atafona, RJ / Calmaria and alvoroçoat the meeting of the waters: rhythm and belonging among fishermen and vacationers at Atafona Beach

Maria Claudia Martinelli de Mello Pitrez 10 January 2014 (has links)
The thesis aims to study the interactions, involvement and perceptions of fishermen and vacationers with the place whom chosen for 'live' and 'visit': Atafonas beach. Located in Rio's north coast, in São João da Barra, on the banks of one of the biggest rivers in southeastern Brazil, the Paraíba do Sul, Atafona is known as a beach which is being "swallowed by the sea" since de 1950s. The sea destroyed more than 14 blocks during this period, constantly modifying the configuration and occupation of the beach. Alongside this peculiar situation, there are also other 'events' that modify the small beach at certain times of year with the voluminous arrival of visitors and tourists in occasions such as the religious partyfor Nossa Senhora da Penha and in the summer season. Thus, to narrate the ties of fishermen and vacationers with the beach, the thesis focused on the stories of life around the Penhas party, the "summer season" and the advance of the sea. By considering the ethnographic descriptions, the understanding of repetitions and regularities of cyclical events requires understanding the movements of continuities in close relation with processes of discontinuities. In this case it is necessary to consider un expected situations, "viradas de quadra", shortcuts, ruins and reoccupations that also can guide and disorient rhythms and belongings in Atafonas beach. Rhythm and belonging are worked accounting for this relational perspective, bringing the thesis focus to the constant negotiations, relocations and creative actions that 'residents' and 'visitors' have with the place. In order to understand the engagements and belongings of fishermen and vacationers about the social and natural changes annual and long-term it is important to work with misunderstandings, rivals and "maragados", such as reveled in different life histories narrated in the ethnographic research.

Local government reform, urban expansion and identity : Nottingham and Derby, 1945-1968

Dockerill, R. P. January 2013 (has links)
This study examines changes in the governance of Nottingham and Derby in the period 1945-1968 from a local and national perspective. In so doing it foreshadows the changes wrought by the Local Government Act 1972, which usually receives greater academic attention. Post-war, local authorities became the nation’s principal landlords, while utilities, such as electricity and gas, were nationalised. In fulfilling their new responsibilities, urban authorities were forced to build estates on the periphery of, or outside, their boundaries. The relocation of residents resulted in an exportation of urban identity and greater urban-ness, but was not accompanied by a corresponding redrawing of administrative boundaries. Nevertheless, when urban authorities sought boundary extensions they were fiercely contested by county authorities, local associations, and residents’ groups. Such associations and groups claimed to possess characteristics distinct from the authorities that wished to incorporate them. There was also a fear that democratic accountability would be lost in the creation of larger units of governance. The local feelings aroused by boundary extension proposals demonstrate that local government is more than merely an agent of central government. It is a living organism: changes to it affect not only services, but also the identity of that place. The expansion proposals of the county boroughs of Nottingham and Derby differed markedly. Uniquely amongst county boroughs nationwide, Nottingham sought no expansion under the review initiated by the Local Government Act 1958. The thesis assesses the political motivations behind this and the wider reactions to reconfiguration proposals for both county boroughs. The role of conurbations is considered in terms of local governance, including the extent to which Nottingham and Derby could be classified as one. The thesis concludes that the maintenance of existing party political strengths outweighed local sentiment, and that only those proposals for reform which benefited the former were enacted.

The present work focuses on understanding the dynamics of identities construction of black people ex-practitioners of Afro-Brazilian cults, converted to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in the city of Pelotas. For the development of the research, seven interviews were accomplished, being five with black people converted to the denomination Neo-charismatic movement, one with the representative of Center of Umbanda/Pelotas Nation and another with the representative of the Evangelical Black Movement of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. Questions were performed on issues related to the reasons for entrance, membership, social mobility, racial discrimination, evasion, religious intolerance and identity, in relation to the African matrix religions and the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. A qualitative analysis of respondents' answers was done, after being classified into three main categories and these, in turn, into subcategories. The first category - African matrix religions - dealt with the reasons of entrance, belonging, social mobility and identity; The second category - Exit of religions of African matrix, dealt with the causes for the religious transit; The third category - The evangelical black, dealt with belonging (friendship and rites), identity and negritude (hair, good looking, racial discrimination, hierarchy and the uniform), religious intolerance and social mobility (tithing and prosperity theology). Beyond the interviews, publications of the Black Evangelical Movement and the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God were also used as a source. Through the analysis of the results obtained, it is concluded that the black people converted to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God presented the construction of a new identity from the absence of the feeling of belonging and rejection to the African matrix religions. It was also noticed that after the conversion, the interviewees manifested feelings of reception by the new denomination and reproduction of the iurdian discourses, especially to those linked to social mobility through the payment of tithing (it is giving that one receives), the personal conscience has evolved concerning black social rights, the interviewees presented new identities, subordinated to the discourse of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, according to which God sees everyone as equal, regardless of skin color or social class (despite a report of racial discrimination by a female collaborator). From this point of view and taking into account personal interests linked to social ascension, status in the religious collectivity by the assimilation/reproduction of the stigmatization of African matrix religions, the interviewees showed lack of concern with the cultural heritage, as Afro-descendant.
