This work attempt to investigate how the body modifications done by the subjects of the transsexualities can give a different meaning to the correspondence among sex, gender, sexual orientacion and desire, being able to generate new matrixes of intelligibility from the identities and multiple strategies used by crossdressers, drag queens, travestities and transexuals. For this, the we made the research using the participant observation and semi-structured interview technique in spaces of sociability of transexualities on downtown Recife. Moreover, we collate some medical, psychoanalytical, and human sciences theories with empirical data collected. After that we have a brief theorical passage through the sex, gender, body, sexuality, speech and subjectivity's conceptions that take us to discussions about representations and performance, setting up the basis of a transexualities experience.

[en] MEN REDESIGNING MEN / [pt] HOMENS QUE REDESENHAM HOMENS

BIANCA MENDES LEMOS 21 June 2004 (has links)
[en] Men redesigning Men is a research that intends to contribute with a reflexion on the expansion of the field of Design by the means of an analysis of the possibility of the insertion of the human body redesign within its boundaries. The main objective of this dissertation is to show the passibility of construction and, why not, deconstruction to which things, as well as the body itself, are subjected once existing under the aegis of culture, society and politics. In the post-modern moment that we live at, if it does exist, it is possible that the Designer, in an expanded sense, may be considered the maestro of these transformations. This dissertation also relies on a few events and theories to present how artists, scientists and philosophers comprehend and discuss these questions about the interferences practiced on the body, its possible obsolescence, the never ending quest for beauty and the quarrels between naturality and artificiality regarding the body. Thus, it concerns the possibility of construction of a theory of this activity, the Design, haven of a professional which can project objects as well as rethink his own structure. It is expected that this is not done for the sake of an ilusory and inexisting purity, but carrying on with his own designations, as men within our human condition.

Never judge a book by its cover: a sociological examination of body art

Teeter, Allison M. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work / Robert K. Schaeffer / In recent years body modification practices such as the arts of tattooing and body piercing have experienced an increase in popularity. A close examination of previous research conducted on the topic revealed a dichotomous categorization of these practices as either acts of deviance or self-expression. In an effort to add to the research that strives to portray 'body art' as a means of identity formation, the current study took a qualitative approach to the examination of body modification practices and the individuals who participate in them. Throughout 2007, fifteen in-depth interviews were conducted with college-age individuals who had at least one visible piece of 'body art,' and were currently living in or around Manhattan, Kansas. An emphasis was placed on what motivated the individuals to participate in the arts of tattooing and/or body piercing and how they felt the physical alteration of their body had affected their subsequent social interactions and identity. A careful review of the interview transcripts revealed that the respondents had chosen to participate in body modification practices for a variety of reasons. Nine analytical categories were then created in an attempt to explain the key motivations for their participation in these practices and ultimately call into question whether these practices should continue to be viewed as "deviant." The findings also demonstrated that there is still a certain amount of stigma associated with the arts of tattooing and body piercing, especially within the workplace. Although some businesses and organizations require their employees to keep their artwork concealed during business hours, others simply refuse to hire any individual who has a visible piece of 'body art.' Thus, the knowledge gained from the respondents and their experiences provided insight into the thought processes involved in the decision to participate in body modification practices as well as shed light on discriminatory, appearance-based hiring practices.

(Re)Figuring Pedagogical Flesh: Phenomenologically (Re)Writing the Lived Experiences of Tattooed Teachers

Howard, Tanya K January 2012 (has links)
This hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry describes the lived experiences of three visibly tattooed teachers and what it is like to sense their tattooed flesh while they are at school. Lived experience descriptions were collected during in-depth interviews and from personal reflective writings conducted by the study author, who is also a tattooed teacher. Using hermeneutic research approaches outlined by Max van Manen and Linda Finlay, lifeworld descriptions of visibly tattooed teachers are presented in the form of anecdotal passages that urge readers to ‘step into tattooed skin’. Drawing from Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception, Luce Irigaray’s work on intersubjectivity, Michel Foucault’s notion of the disciplinary gaze, theories of the look in education forwarded by Madeline Grumet, and Judith Butler’s notion of subversive bodies, meanings are made of tattooed teachers’ experiences of adopting uncomfortable teacher identities and then growing comfortable in their professional roles. Through hermeneutic analysis, five main themes are presented, constituting the “essences” of the phenomemon of living as a visibly tattooed teacher: Trying to Fit; Mis-fit; Fit. You? Fit You!; Fitting In; and One Size Does Not Fit All.

Nursing Student Perceptions of Health Care Worker Appearance and Compassion, Skill, Knowledge, and Trustworthiness

Quick, Sophia 01 May 2021 (has links)
Background: Many health care facilities enforce strict dress code policies prohibiting visible body modifications, including tattoos, piercings, and vibrant hair colors. As popularity of body modifications among young adults surges, facilities may be forced to adapt policies as these workers enter the workforce. While some evidence exists related to patient perceptions of health care workers with body modifications, there is little about how nursing students perceive them. This study aimed to describe undergraduate, pre-licensure nursing students’ perceptions of health care worker appearance on compassion, skill, knowledge, and trustworthiness. Methods: Using cross-sectional design, an on-line Likert-type survey was used to collect data from 137 undergraduate, pre-licensure nursing students in Northeast Tennessee. Participants viewed photos of male and female workers with various body modifications. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: There were statistically significant differences between groups across all four variables. Male and female health care workers without body modifications were rated highest on all four variables. Male and female with tattoos were rated the second highest. Male and female with facial piercings were rated lowest. The female health care worker color, irrespective of body modification type, was rated higher than the male counterpart across all variables. Conclusion: Results suggest that nursing students may perceive health care workers without body modifications to be the most compassionate, skilled, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. Students may perceive tattoos as more acceptable in the workplace than facial piercings or vibrant hair colors. Students may perceive body modifications as more acceptable for females than males.

Sociální prostředí a tělesné modifikace adolescentů - příspěvek k sociální pedagogice / Social Environment and Body Modifications of Adolescents - Contribution to Social Pedagogy

Korbelová, Kateřina January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis "Social Environment and Physical Modifications of Adolescents - a Contribution to Social Pedagogy" deals with the issue of physical modifications as a widespread phenomenon today. It focuses mainly on the two most common forms in today's society: tattoos and piercings. It analyzes the possible causes and motivations (in relation to the social environment) to undergoing visual changes to their own body. The pedagogical aspect of the work is the focused on the family environment, life patterns of respondents and peer groups. Part of the theses is devoted to the school environment. The first part deals with the theoretical insight into the issue, the importance of body modifications, the definition of adolescence, self- concept and social environment. The practical part contains interviews with respondents, which were implemented using a semi-structured interview and then analyzed and interpreted.

Marked Membership: Anthropological Perspectives on North American Contemporary Tattooing

Johnson, Rosalie A 01 January 2021 (has links)
Tattooing has persisted across time and space, often developing across ancient civilizations, even before cross-cultural contact. With the current oldest verified tattoos on the mummified body of Ötzi, the 5,300-year-old Tyrolean Iceman, up to current-day tattooing, a variety of uses and meanings have been ascribed to the practice. A majority of anthropological research has been dedicated towards indigenous tattooing traditions, external perceptions of marked individuals, and tattooing's deviant associations. Only a marginal amount of work has been geared towards the internal perceptions and cultural structuring of tattoos within modern societies, especially in the West. Frequently, a ‘tattoo community' is assumed in both daily conversation and academic publications. Yet surprisingly, the small amount of research that sets out to test for the possibility of a unique community structured around tattoos cannot come to an agreement on what the current social configuration surrounding Western tattooing is. This thesis sets out to investigate if there is such a community, or if such a group fits a different social figuration instead. Due to constraints brought on by COVID-19, it has been adapted to become an in-depth literature analysis with emic input from materials published from within the tattoo industry. This study also primarily focuses on North America, but does include international resources due to the high level of cross-cultural input historically and contemporarily. With a blending of insider and outsider resources, I intend to provide the most comprehensive compilation of possible social configurations theorized across disciplines, along with theorizing as best within my abilities the possible nature of a universal tattoo group in North America in my Honors Undergraduate Thesis.

[en] BODY MODIFICATIONS: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN BODY AND PSYCHISM / [pt] MODIFICAÇÕES CORPORAIS: UM DIALOGO ENTRE CORPO E PSIQUISMO

BRUNA CRISTINA DE A B L VIEIRA 26 October 2020 (has links)
[en] The body modifications presented in this survey include tattooing, body piercing, sub-dermal implanting and any other kinds of physical interventions, involving painful procedures that might generate an extreme transformation, coming out as the coverage of a large or even the total body surface. Carried out for non-medical purposes, these modifications are outside the social aesthetic standards. The following research seeks a reflection on the relationship between body and psyche, exploring notions of sensoriality, body memories, early newborn experiences and the Other s part to play in the psychic and physical constitution of the subject for a better comprehension on how the body have been perceived and hyper-invested lately, being the body modifications an example of that. The theoretical investigations have pointed that the psychic constitution and the corporeal perception are developed at the same time, influencing one another, being the environment a considerable factor for the child s subjective, physical, and psychic development. Which ends up overlapping with how the body is perceived since remote times until the present days, within both individual and social perspectives. The body modifications are a important representation of this phenomenon, once they allow the corporeal malleability to be explored, to the stage of rising reflections about how far can go the limits of the body and the communicative versatility, which is used by the corporeal dimension to symbolically express itself.
