Using Values: a Qualitative Analysis of Ethical Dilemmas Encountered by Australian Lutheran Secondary School Principals

Albinger, Kenneth Charles, n/a January 2005 (has links)
Recent studies of effective leadership for schools suggest relationships between the work of principals and beliefs, values and theoretical knowledge. However, it is not clear how these relationships work. In schools of the Lutheran Church of Australia the situation is complicated by expectations that principals will be operating with a Lutheran Christian world view. The precise nature of the role of world view in determining professional action has not been fully researched. This study made use of analysis techniques grounded in symbolic interactionism to examine the construction of meaning and rationale for professional actions by Lutheran secondary school principals. It sought to understand the impact of value on meaning and decision in ethically challenging situations. The central question of this research was: What values influence the reflection of Australian Lutheran secondary school principals as they address ethical dilemmas in their woik? Drawing on the accounts given by three Australian Lutheran secondary pnncipals to provide data for analysis, and making use of membership category analysis techniques, the study found that three statements could be made: 1. There is evidence in the accounts to suggest that the way principals perceive dilemmas is the result of a filtering process where some facts ate not fully considered prior to action. 2. There is evidence in the accounts to suggest that the filtering process is more strongly influenced by sub-rational and trans-rational values than by rational values. 3. There is evidence in the accounts that each piincipal has a world view that is partially shaped by values implicit in the Christian tradition. These findings are tentative because of the limited scope of the research. They have implications for the theoretical literature, suggesting that mote attention needs to be given to the impact of trans-rational and sub-rational values as filters of perception in difficult decisions. 'The findings suggest that any study of the reflection of school principals in ethically challenging situations should take into account the power of non-rational values to be a lens that distorts what is considered in the reflective process'. They also have implications for further research by those interested in Lutheran schools and those interested in the importance of values in shaping perception. Finally they have implications for those who prepare piincipals for Lutheran schools, suggesting the need for a clearer articulation of a philosophy for Lutheran schooling and for the development of the habit of critical reflection in Lutheran principals.

Christian Parent Controlled Schools in Australia - a Study of the relationship between foundational values and prevailing practices

Justins, Charles Francis Roy, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2002 (has links)
Christian Parent Controlled (CPC) Schools, which commenced in the 1960s, are a relatively small, but growing component of the non-government schooling sector in Australia. In 2001, they enrolled over 22 000 students in 85 schools. Very little research has been conducted on the values and practices of CPC schools and while these schools frequently assert that they promote explicitly Christian values, their foundational values have not previously been identified or recorded. This research identifies the key foundational values which are characteristic of these schools and examines the extent to which these values continue to influence the prevailing practices of these schools. Consideration is given to the implications of the relationship between foundational values and prevailing practices for the identity, development and leadership of CPC schools in Australia. The ability of these schools to articulate their foundational values and consider their prevailing practices in the light of these values should enhance their ability to understand their heritage, assess their current situation and plan their future. The research found that in general, prevailing practices in these schools give faithful expression to the foundational values; however, the research also identified a number of areas where CPC schools struggle to engage consistently with these values. As a result of this study, recommendations are proposed to assist national and school-based leadership in their strategic planning for the maintenance of these values and the future of these schools.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Roseli de Almeida Massotti.pdf: 1934915 bytes, checksum: 01fa36a74792b6f3973e3ec6de89ab70 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-08-30 / This research is about the contribution of the educator Erasmo de Carvalho Braga to Brazilian education in the twentieth century. Living from 1877 to 1932 and contributed in an outstanding way to Brazilian education, Erasmo Braga presented theoretical conjectures that can be still recalled currently. It also aims to understand the context in which the conjectures were generated and applicated, as well as to bring them up and point them out as a productive support to current educators. First, it analyses the life and works of Erasmo Braga. In sequence, this research will seek to emphasize the educator and the education in his context. At least, seek to emphasize the importance of protestant values as a formative identity of students. It is valid to underline that the research predates the analysis of Braga Series , a didactic material for the student s use, composed by four volumes of texts for interdisciplinary readings. Such Braga Series will also be study object for exploration of the theoretical bases of the author. Therefore, this research will aid the understanding and reflexion related to the current prominence of Erasmo Braga s conjectures that deal with moral actions, interdisciplinarity and educational quality of contemporary education.

The missiological dimensions of African ecclesiology

Andriatsimialomananarivo, Solomon 01 January 2002 (has links)
The growth of the Church in Africa, namely at numerical level 1 is tremendous. However, we notice that her impact on society and public life is not so visible as the growth is, since Christian values are embodied by Christians. Yet, the Church has huge human resources1 pastors, missionaries, lay leaders and theologians. The challenge for the Church in Africa is to incarnate and inculturate these values and the living message of the Gospel. In this thesis we question the co-operation between the Church and mission agencies, between native pastors and western missionaries. We notice that since 150 years, there has been a huge gap between these two entities. This is due to the fact that Theology and Missiology look like two lines that never meet. This situation leads us to revisit not only the current paradigm Church-Mission but also the current link between Theology and Missiology. We propose the following theses: 1. Theology is mission-centered. The goal of Theology is to extend the Kingdom of God by the prodamatlon of the Gospel so that every nation (ethne) may be represented in the Kingdom, and by the communication of Christian values so that a new society or a new civilisation may emerge and may take over the current and corrupted society. 2. To explore the Biblical data on Church and Mission, the only ontological approach appears to be limited, therefore the functional approach must be added. The right question is not only “What the Church Is" but also "For what the Church Is" 3. The local Church is the representation of the Universal Church in a given location. This local church is culturally rooted. Cultural plurality is a sine qua non condition for the Universal Church. 4. The local Church is the basis of mission. The basic reflections on mission must take place within the local Church, at the grass root level. All human resources, from mission agencies and para-church organisation are accountable to the local Church. 5. The major themes of healing, liberation and identity are at the core of the Gospel. Theologians must articulate these themes in their discourse. 6. Co-operation between local Churches, or within a duster of local Churches, gives opportunities to succeed in term of mission since no local Church can do mission alone.

The Happy Prince : A Paradoxical Aesthetic Tale and a Dual Critique of Victorian Times

Caizergues, Quentin January 2020 (has links)
This essay highlights The Happy Prince’s advantageous use of conventions of the fairy tale genre to stress critical issues of the Victorian period: the challenge of the established Christian socio-moral order, the rising of the bourgeois industrial society, and the advent of aestheticism as a response. Using the close reading technique supported by the Victorian socio-historical background, the analysis establishes that the criticism proceeds by double associations. Firstly, the clear structure of the tale, enriched by a plethora of aesthetical features and suitable narrative processes, is propitious for children’s access to a message calling for more human generosity. Meanwhile, subtle analogies to the Christian imagery appear blurred by paradoxical elements. This prevents a definite religious interpretation from adults to which those messages are intended. Secondly, in connection with aestheticism, a social and moral criticism takes the form of a satire of the utilitarian vision of the bourgeoisie and a questioning of the common Victorian beliefs: the link between beauty and moral integrity, as well as the moral code of femininity. Finally, the utilitarian discourse and the disapproval of the research for pleasure from beauty merging with a hedonist vision, advocate an “art for art’s sake” free of these respective considerations.

[en] PROFESSIONALS OF THE CHURCH: A FOREST OF DELUSION / [pt] PROFISSIONAIS DA IGREJA: UMA FLORESTA DE ENGANOS

NILCE CUNHA PINHEIRO 24 August 2004 (has links)
[en] This dissertation chooses Gil Vicente, sixteenth century poet, as investigation object, seeking essentially to detach the discrepancies and the clerical deviations, in a time when the church loses its main position as the truth base. Several authors criticize the church, diverging in essential aspects since some of them long for a reform inside the church - Gil Vicente - and others desire the complete reform of its foundations - Erasmo of Rotterdam. The reality is privileged in Gil Vicente s creation, although he doesn t worry about its strict representation. His satirical theater, in spite of having evident contacts with history, is mainly marked by his ideological and moral positioning, centered in Medieval Christian values, in which he criticizes its degradation, and he presents the necessary qualifications for the entrance in a world of glory - the first world.

[en] BELIEF AND HUMAN PROMOTION: THE EVANGELIZING MISSION OF THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY IN THE LIGHT OF CHRISTIAN HUMANISM / [pt] CRER PROMOVENDO O HUMANO: A MISSÃO EVANGELIZADORA DA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA À LUZ DO HUMANISMO CRISTÃO

JOSE ABEL DE SOUSA 22 September 2020 (has links)
[en] This research seeks to comprehend how the Catholic university can face current challenges in order to interact with its faculty and especially with its student body according to the values present and stemming from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The evangelizing mission of the Catholic university is discussed, specifically its current challenge in the pluralist society. The starting point is that cultural and religious pluralism is not only external but is found within the institution itself. The study is carried out in accordance with the tripartite pastoral method see-judgeact, interrelated with Ex Corde Ecclesiae, document that proposes the definition of the identity and mission of Christian faith that promotes human beings in the light of the message of the Kingdom of God, which entails Christian values, although not always named as such. Before the ascertainment of the existence of a hiatus between faith and life, it becomes necessary (and possible) for the Catholic university to have an active and dialogic campus ministry. More than a pastoral university, it should be a university in pastorality, a concept that points to a university atmosphere in which concrete attitudes are taken for the promotion and defense of the dignity of the human person, searching to live the integral and integrated Christian humanism, having solidarity as the guiding North. The evangelizing mission proposed in this research aims for the Catholic university to adopt a faithful posture to the evangelical values and, at the same time, to value and respect freedoms, religious diversity and cultural plurality, which characterize current society. The pastoral action undertaken in the university sphere constantly seeks to dialogue with the contemporary world as it has been announced by official Church documents: the document of Buga, the Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the conciliar document Gravissimum Educationis, the Document of Aparecida, among others. It reiterates the challenge presented to the present Catholic university, considering that the faithfulness to the office of evangelization is not optional, rather vital, justifying its Catholic adjective, considering the fact that the religious references in the Catholic institutions find themselves increasingly thinned, being absorbed or suffocated by the mercantilist business mentality and posture in the society where the university takes part. The Catholic adjective is equivalent to universal and necessarily remits to the Christian principles such the ones that illuminate the search for the truth about God, the human being and nature. The title Catholic is what specifies the university dynamism, distinguishing it from others.
