Culture and conceptualisations of nature : an interpretive analysis of Australian and Chinese perspectives.

Slay, Jill January 2000 (has links)
Issues of culture and worldview and their impact on students' learning of science have become increasingly important to science teachers. This study details work that I carried out in the period 1995-1999 which examined the effect of culture on students' conceptualisations of nature. It is framed as the creation of my own 'living educational theory' as I, a teacher-researcher, dealt with what I perceived were the cultural inequities experienced by students in my classroom. I carried out my first study with a group of seven rural high school students in the Far North of Queensland in Australia, where I was teaching in 1995. Later, in two visits to China, I was able to carry out the same sort of research with a group of seven Chinese college students in Jinan, Shandong Province, PRC, largely using the Chinese language. I used a naturalistic inquiry approach and a semi-structured interview technique to determine students' conceptualisations of nature. I have chosen to embed the results of these two studies within narratives that describe my experiences in the two cultures as I carried out my research. For each culture, I have also developed an epic description of the role of science from the literature and history of that culture. From my three sources of data, interview, narrative and historical description, I have made knowledge claims about the students' beliefs about the natural world. My research findings are ironic to me since they are diametrically opposite to what I had expected. Initially I had believed that Mainland Chinese students would possess a world view full of alternative perspectives to that of Western school science. My research indicates however that students in rural Mainland China hold a traditional and integrated modem Western scientific world view. Although some researchers in other South-East Asian communities propose alternative frameworks for ++ / the teaching of science, frameworks that are actually 'pre-modern' these do not appear to be appropriate for Mainland Chinese students. I had expected that the Australian students would bring a modern Western scientific world view to the science classroom. However, the group of rural Western students that I interviewed displayed a world view that is not recognisable as that of modern Western science. Postmodernism and other cultural and social effects appear to have influenced them to such an extent that some have clearly not 'crossed the border' to a modern Western scientific world view. This thesis reflects my desire to overcome the perceived problem of inequity in my own teaching. The knowledge claims made here give some indication as to how I may improve my own practice. A return to the classroom will allow me to continue the cycle of action and reflection by which I can validate, develop and refine my living educational theory.

[pt] CULTURA E NATUREZA NA PATRIMONIALIZAÇÃO DO LITORAL FLUMINENSE / [en] CULTURE AND NATURE IN THE HERITAGE PROTECTION OF THE COAST OF RIO DE JANEIRO

JULIENE DO VALLE TARDELI CRUZ 19 December 2020 (has links)
[en] The thesis analyzes the process of to list the Rio de Janeiro coast, carried Instituto do patrimônio Cultural (INEPAC) in 1985, under the justification of protect the cultural and natural aspects of traditional communities in Paraty, Niterói and São João da Barra. The main hypothesis of this paper is the fact that this patrimonialization was possibilited by a context of discursive renewal, which refers to the period of redemocratization the moment of defining Rio s identity after the merger of the State of Guanabara with Rio de Janeiro and the increase of social movements in the areas of culture and environment. The problematization of these factors, in addition to the approach to international and national debates about natural and cultural, material and immaterial heritage, contribute to analyze the role of protection policies today.

The Second Skin : A study on the relationship between clothes and human bodies

Flodin, Emmi January 2019 (has links)
Clothes are the second skin on human bodies. By coming in contact with humans, clothes become a part of the body. Through the contact, clothes affect and enable human actions. This thesis investigates the relationship between human bodies and clothes by conducting interviews and wardrobe studies. Together with the informants and clothes, the exhibition “Fashioned from Nature” from The Victoria and Albert Museum is partly analyzed. The material is being interpreted in a critical analysis through theories on material agency and skin. The analysis turns to the culture and nature dualism, in order to highlight the neglected physical agency in clothing. Clothing’s agency is both physical and aesthetical. Neither of the aspects can be subordinate, nor superior, since clothes consist equally of both. Following the theories, clothing’s agency is being acknowledged through the encounters with humans. However, the results in this thesis show that clothing’s agency is ever present.

From the contact with activist groups in two cities in the state of São Paulo it was possible to observe situations that alternate between containment and propitiation measures and their consequent interferences in a conviviality supported by the principle of animal protection. Government and activism – as well as the perceptions and conceptions of the domestic animal resulting from their respective actions – allow a theoretical and methodological reflection on the binomial established between culture and nature, when they reveal conflicts and possible ambivalences of animal protection, situated between control and hosting measures that, consequently, are linked to affectivities and legal issues. Ethical arguments, contained in laws and public policies, as well as the appeal to the sensitive dimension, eventually triggered by activism, also provide subsidies to understanding other concepts - such as welfare and animal rights – and these interspecific relationships mediated by emotions and reason, both tangents to the moral condition of the animal as part of a predominantly human socius.

Andersson, Jenny, Westby, Andreas January 2022 (has links)
Regional development is an area that according to previous research is perceived as a complex subject, where many factors are involved and have an influence, where the tourism industry is something that can affect regional development in both the region and outside. In regional development, there are also factors around governance, marketing and communication that can affect how destinations are developed by the tourism industry, as well as what resources can be used in the various areas. In previous research on Värmland regarding regional development perspectives, there has been a focus on regional development as a whole and not so much focus on the role of the tourism industry in it. However, the region and the municipalities see potential in the use of the tourism industry as a development tool. This study aims to highlight how the development of rural regions can be affected by the tourism industry, and to generally increase the knowledge about regional development in interaction with sustainability and the tourism industry. This is because the regional development in Värmland may still have some of the obstacles perceived in previous research, where sustainable development of the tourism industry in the countryside was seen as a major obstacle, as there were considered shortcomings in how the tourism industry would develop sustainably. In this study, the purpose and issues of the study have been kept in mind when both the theory and the empirical data have been collected, where a large part of the focus has been on, among other things, regional development, destination development and marketing. With these different concepts, categories have been given to more clearly see common denominators for the study's theoretical and empirical collection with connection to these concepts, and how this can later be read in the study's analysis and conclusions. In using the methods, the study has chosen to relate to a social constructivist approach, as the authors who have written the essay see the work with regional development as a complex social construction, which comes from different perceptions around different areas that regional development affects. The methods used by the study are document analysis and a qualitative questionnaire, which is designed according to the theoretical framework and questions in order to fulfill the purpose. Then in the empirical part, the collected empirical data is presented in division into the questions for the study. The empirical data is then analyzed from the theoretical framework, and the analysis is followed by the conclusions that can be drawn from the analysis.
