A delicate balancing act : an investigation of volunteer use and stakeholder perspectives in public librariesCasselden, Biddy January 2016 (has links)
This research aims to investigate current volunteer use in public libraries in England. Volunteer use is not a new phenomenon, and has been an integral part of public library provision for many years. However recent Government policies, together with greater financial austerity, have resulted in a change in public service delivery. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of volunteers involved within the public library service, and the growth of community run libraries, resulting in much public and professional concern. An interpretivist research approach was used to investigate stakeholder opinions regarding volunteer use, and involved a two phase process. Initially a Delphi survey explored attitudes of 15 English public library service managers, followed by in-depth investigation of two case study library authorities, located in the North-East of England. Surveys, interviews and focus groups, helped to build a rich picture of volunteer use amongst the groups of stakeholders. Findings clearly indicated that volunteer use has moved from additionality to replacement of staff, and is increasingly being used by local authorities as a solution to budget reductions required as a result of economic austerity. A hybrid approach to library service provision has developed, using a combination of paid staff and volunteers, which indicates a fundamental culture shift within public libraries. Research results identified concerns relating to the long term viability of a hybrid approach, and how this impacted on the wider community in terms of service provision. Key concerns were raised concerning advocacy, sensitivity, the fragility of relationships, and the provision of an accountable and high quality service. Formal and informal control mechanisms need to be employed by library service managers to ensure that they reap the benefits of volunteer use, thereby avoiding social exclusion, clarifying stakeholder boundaries, and delivering a high quality accountable service. Training library managers in new volunteer management skills, and adopting a volunteer relationship management approach may help to ensure that this new arrangement is mutually beneficial for all concerned.

Komplexní analýza rizik pro Dětské centrum Plzeň a návrh následných opatření na ochranu obyvatelstva / Complex analysis of the risks to the Children´s Center Plzeň and the proposal subsequent measures to civil protectionBĚLOHLAVÁ, Nikola January 2015 (has links)
The thesis analyses the potential risks threaten the health facility Children´s Center Pilsen. The legal definition of this Centre is currently complicated. The result of this thesis is risk analysis and emergency documentation witch the facility will be used in practice and include it in its documentation.The aim was to analyze the risks from the available documentation, by collecting data to process emergency documentation for Children´s Center and develop the auxiliary material for staff of the medical facility.The thesis is divided into several parts. The theoretical part presents the basis for preparation of the practical part of thesis. I deal with the basic concepts of the IRS,which will be mentioned in the practical part of thesis. The theoretical part describes similar analysis of the risks and the available methods of analysis than can by used.I used KARS analysis which identified priority risks and SWOT analysis through which I discovered strengths and weaknesses, which I used in the evaluation of the discussion. The last chapter is about caring for children up to 3 years in Czech republic. This area is still a delicate topic, because this facilities are not unified and have different status and founder. I progressed factual-analytic method during processing this thesis. I have worked with the available documentation, literature and various mapping portals. It was also necessary to asses legislation. It was the necessary communication with experts and especially the employees DC Pilsen and adapted the documentation to their needs.The next part of this thesis is research. It was important to accurately characterize the area in which the Center is because of this characteristic appeared individual threats. The second step was work with emergency and crisis documentation of Pilsen which were selected from several sources incidents and crisis situations that would have an impact of the functioning of Children´s Center. That treats were applied on Center and have been described in detail and recored in the analysis KARS. It was necessary to adapt KARS analysis to the object. After the identification of priority risks and their connection I used SWOT analysis for identifies weaknesses and threats that can not arise from emergency and crisis documentation. This threats can not arise because the crisis documentation of city talks about the risks across the board. The SWOT analysis has resulted specific factors to be considered in the context of emergency preparedness Center improvement. This factors are discussed in the debate. After constructing the analysis was necessary to provide the proposal subsequent measures identified risks. It had be taken into account that the resulting incidents will address primarily the staff and it had to be adapted solutions. It showed 8 risks which threaten both building and which were until now not addressed. Another risks was determined in subsequent analysis for each building of Center separately.For the same incidents were proposed identical proposals because it allowed the situation. Specific solutions were proposal especially for the individual parts of the facility Annex thesis is emergency documentation Children´s Center Pilsen which includes prepared checklists on specific incidents for staff. This checklists supplement existing documentation. Risk with the highest priority is a blackout which would affect a number of othersubsystems. The solution is to purchase a replacement source of electricity. It turned out that the advantage is the separation of buildings (Na Chmelnicich and Partyzanska) in this case because infants and toddlers may be shifted to the second building Children´s Center. The surprise is that the building Children´s Center Partyzanska is not included in the zone of interest Pilsner Urquell brewery.

Speech community-based documentation, description, and revitalization: Kari'nja in Konomerume / Kari'nja in KonomerumeYamada, Racquel-Maria, 1967- 09 1900 (has links)
xxii, 995 p. A print copy of this thesis (with two accompanying DVD videos) is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Since 2005, I have been working with members of the Kari'nja community of Konomerume, Suriname to document, describe, preserve, and revitalize their heritage language, the Aretyry dialect of Kari'nja (Cariban family). Simultaneously, I have worked to develop, pilot, and articulate a model of field research that depends on participation from speech community members. This dissertation combines exposition of this model of field research with presentation of a large body of the results from the application of that new model.
Ethnically Kari'nja, Konomerume community members have witnessed a decline in language use in recent generations. Although I work primarily with members of the Konomerume community, a village on the banks of the Wajambo River in Suriname, in recent years, I have expanded my work to include two other communities in the region, Corneliskondre and Kalebas Kreek. My work with Kari'nja community members concerns four broad, interrelated areas of endangered languages research, each described in a section of the dissertation. Following Chapter 1, which provides an orientation to the dissertation as a whole, Chapter 2 reviews strengths and problems with prior models of fieldwork, then proposes a new model of fieldwork with members of Indigenous communities. Chapter 3 demonstrates some of the linguistic results of our work together in Konomerume, offering a more pedagogical overview of some aspects of Kari'nja grammar followed by more academic descriptions of nonverbal predication and an innovative main clause progressive construction. Chapter 4 addresses how documentation can be combined with applied linguistics to support revitalization through formal language teaching. Finally, Chapter 5 describes the documentary corpus that is found in the appendices, explaining procedural steps used in creating the corpus and outlining the actual documentary products that we have produced.
The Appendices are the concrete representation of the body of collaborative work that the Kari'nja community and I have done together. They include DVD videos, a substantial collection of transcribed, translated, and grammatically annotated texts in multiple genres, a dictionary, a pedagogical grammar sketch, and a curriculum guide for formal teaching of introductory Kari'nja. / Committee in charge: Spike Gildea, Chairperson, Linguistics;

A Grammar of Hakhun TangsaBoro, Krishna 06 September 2017 (has links)
Hakhun Tangsa is one of around eighty ethnic and linguistic communities called Tangsa or Tangshang. Hakhuns live mostly in Arunachal Pradesh, India, and in Sagaing Division, Myanmar. The number of speakers is estimated at around ten thousand. Hakhun is a Tibeto-Burman language, and it forms a subgroup with Nocte, Wancho, Phom, Konyak, Chang, and Khiamngan called Konyak or Northern Naga.
Hakhun is a tonal language with twenty-two consonants, six vowels, and a simple syllable structure. Open word classes include Nouns and Verbs; property concept terms form a subclass of verbs. Noun roots are mostly monosyllabic, and most multisyllabic nouns are compounds. Nominal morphology includes prossessive prefixes and a set of semantically specific suffixes. Case is coded by postpositions.
Verb roots are also mostly monosyllabic. A few verbs have suppletive stems. Verb serialization is common, and expresses complex events like resultative and sequential. A few grammaticalized verbs/elements contribute abstract meanings like phase, associated motion, causative, benefactive, etc. Typical verbal categories are expressed by independent particles. The most extensive and grammatically obligatory set consists of single syllable particles called operators, which express verbal categories like tense, mood, deixis, negation, inverse, and argument indexation. The typical argument indexation pattern is hierarchical. Deviations from this pattern is used to express certain pragmatic effects like affectedness and politeness.
Non-verbal clauses may take overt copulas depending on tense and polarity. Most semantic distinctions, such as equation, property-concepts, quantification, simulation, and location are expressed by the nominal strategy. Existential and possession are expressed by a distinct strategy. Typical verbal clauses include intransitive, transitive, and ditransitive; less typical ones include weather condition, sensation-emotion, reflexive, reciprocal, and ‘need’ constructions. Person-based split-ergativity is seen in case marking, where first and second person singular arguments follow accusative, and the rest ergative alignment. Accusative alignment is also found in argument indexation in non-final clauses. The object alignment is indirective in case marking.
Complement clauses include sentence-like, non-finite, and infinitive complement clauses. Adverbial clauses include various kinds of temporal clauses, temporal/conditional clauses, counterfactual, concessive, purpose, and substitutive clauses. Clause chaining (medial-final) is prevalent. Independent sentences are linked through tail-head linking and through connectives.

The key aspects during departmental technology transfer : A case study at a biopharmaceutical companySonesson, William, Sandström Parke, Hilding January 2018 (has links)
In this case study the authors have tried to fill the gap of technology transferliterature focused on the biopharmaceutical industry. The technology transferliterature displays a clear industry-specific gap, mostly focused on heavy- andpharmaceutical industries. The authors have tried to find the key aspects of asuccessful technology transfer from the literature on the subject from alldifferent industries. The authors have then used these aspects to create atheoretical framework of the aspects that are possibly applicable in thebiopharmaceutical industry. A case study has been conducted at The Company which has a long pedigreeas one of the most innovative companies within the biopharmaceuticalindustry. The Company both develops and manufactures diagnostic tests forantibodies in animals, and their products are today widely known within theindustry. The authors have conducted a series of interviews, a non-participantobservation and also reviewed documentation of previous productsdevelopment processes. These qualitative methods have provided bothempirical evidence of similarities between the technology transfer literatureand a biopharmaceutical technology transfer process, as well as evidence ofwhat aspects are of importance in the biopharmaceutical industry. Using thisabductive research strategy, the authors have determined the key aspects thatare conceivably applicable in the biopharmaceutical industry. These are Goalcombability, Communication and documentation, Transfer plan andInterdepartmental collaboration. These aspects have not been implementedand therefore not been tested at The Company.

Využití Omaha systému v laktačním poradenství / The Use of Omaha System in Lactation CounsellingVESELÁ, Simona January 2018 (has links)
The thesis deals with the use of Omaha system in lactation counselling. At present time the care of newborns realized through general practitioners is minimal. Therefore, the connection of community nursing related to shorter time of hospitalization of both mother and her newborn child is vital. Lactation counselling is closely connected to the obligatory documentation of provided care. Omaha system is considered as a suitable standardized terminology for community nursing. The thesis dealt with the analysis of Omaha system, lactation counselling, the issue of breastfeeding as a whole and the legislation related to nursing documentation in the theoretical part. The main aim of the research is the implementation of Omaha system in lactation counselling. Three main goals were set in the thesis. The first one was to map the differences between the care provided by lactation counsellors with and without medical qualification. The second goal was to describe the way of administration of breastfeeding mothers by the counsellors. The third goal was to elaborate and evaluate the documentation according to Omaha system in the field of lactation counselling provided by counselors with a qualification. To achieve the goals of this thesis quantitative-qualitative method of data collection was used. The method of questioning through a non-standardized questionnaire was selected for quantitative research. The qualitative part of the research was based on the use of semi-structured in-depth interview method. The third part of the research is represented by the content analysis of Omaha system. The qualitative part of the research was processed with open coding method. The research question was answered through the analysis of the interviews. The respondents in this research are represented by lactation counselors. The first research file is represented by counselors both with and without qualification. The second research file includes counselors with medical qualification only. The questionnaire research was realized through an electronic questionnaire. The interviews were conducted with six lactation counselors with a medical qualification. The questionnaire research shows differences in the counselling provided by the counselors with and without a qualification which supports H1. The official documentation for counselling is used by a few respondents and mainly by the ones with a qualification. The good thing is that most counselors record data about mothers and breastfeeding. Next, it seems that the unofficial documentation of counselors includes problems and solutions description. The results show that H2 has not been supported. However, it is good that almost half of the respondents are interested in using a standardized documentation for counselling. Next, the counselors with a qualification do not use standardized taxonomy of nursing problems. The results show that only two counselors with a qualification have a contract with an insurance company. Most of them do not cooperate with a podiatrist or gynecologist. The most troubling issues for them are lack of time and missing contracts with an insurance company. Most of them think that longer hospitalization of mothers does not have a better effect on the quality of breastfeeding. Moreover, the interviews with the counselors with a medical qualification show that the newly created documentation of Omaha system has been processed thoroughly and clearly. They consider it more time demanding, which could be a problem because of the lack of time caused by the financial situation of mothers or because of insurance companies. The output of tis thesis is a newly created documentation for lactation counselors and lactation centers based on Omaha system which allows a more effective way of providing lactation counselling.
