Domination in graphs with application to network reliabilityDod, Markus 18 December 2015 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis we investigate different domination-related graph polynomials, like the connected domination polynomial, the independent domination polynomial, and the total domination polynomial. We prove some basic properties of these polynomials and obtain formulas for the calculation in special graph classes. Furthermore, we also prove results about the calculation of the different graph polynomials in product graphs and different representations of the graph polynomials.
One focus of this thesis lays on the generalization of domination-related polynomials. In this context the trivariate domination polynomial is defined and some results about the bipartition polynomial, which is also a generalization of the domination polynomial, is presented. These two polynomials have many useful properties and interesting connections to other graph polynomials. Furthermore, some more general domination-related polynomials are defined in this thesis, which shows some possible directions for further research.

The Problems of Protest and the Persistence of Domination: Social Movement Theory and Bourdieu's Economy of PracticeSamuel, CHRISTOPHER 30 January 2013 (has links)
The Problems of Protest and the Persistence of Domination: Social Movement Theory and Bourdieu’s Economy of Practice is a normative intervention into social movement theory and debates about social movement goals, strategies and tactics. The project asks: what normative implications derive from incorporating Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological framework into social movement research? My core arguments are that Bourdieu’s framework has the potential to sensitize activists and analysts to the tension between conformity and failure and that escaping radical/reformist debates requires working through this tension.
The dissertation intervenes in social movement theory from within the critical theory tradition by refusing to separate empirical and normative questions. I develop my argument using two strategies. First, I undertake a close reading of Bourdieu’s most important works and the debates they have provoked. Second I apply the conceptual tools this close reading offers to reconsider the logic behind two key social movement theory concepts: collective identity and repertoires of contention.
Following a general introduction and literature review, I undertake a close consideration of habitus and an argument for how attention to the suffering produced by symbolic power constitutes grounds for normative justice claims. I then consider how collective identity formation in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer mobilization indicates the presence of symbolic violence, primarily in the form of epistemic violence. Next I argue that the nature of neoliberal symbolic power creates political antinomies for representation and affinity-based segments of the alterglobalization movement. Finally I argue that Bourdieu needs to be balanced by Nietzsche and that an orientation toward ‘overcoming’ offers a way out of the tension between conformity and failure. My findings point to the need for more sophisticated instruments for understanding the relationship between objective interests and subjective perception, impositions of, and challenges to, ‘logical consensus’, and strategies for counter-training and other mechanisms to support activists in resisting symbolic violence. / Thesis (Ph.D, Political Studies) -- Queen's University, 2013-01-29 14:14:16.699

Automated Conjecturing Approach for BenzenoidsMuncy, David 01 January 2016 (has links)
Benzenoids are graphs representing the carbon structure of molecules, defined by a closed path in the hexagonal lattice. These compounds are of interest to chemists studying existing and potential carbon structures. The goal of this study is to conjecture and prove relations between graph theoretic properties among benzenoids. First, we generate conjectures on upper bounds for the domination number in benzenoids using invariant-defined functions. This work is an extension of the ideas to be presented in a forthcoming paper. Next, we generate conjectures using property-defined functions. As the title indicates, the conjectures we prove are not thought of on our own, rather generated by a process of automated conjecture-making. This program, named Cᴏɴᴊᴇᴄᴛᴜʀɪɴɢ, is developed by Craig Larson and Nico Van Cleemput.

The Representation of the Environment in Children's LiteratureBoudreaux, Becky 22 May 2006 (has links)
This study is a descriptive research project which examines a purposeful census of the best selling children's books for 0-8 year olds in the United States in 2003. This cross-sectional study of these social artifacts evaluates the extent to which the ideologies of the environmental movement have been inculcated into culture. It evaluates how the environment is represented in children’s literature and the extent to which children's literature meets the goals of environmental education. Through narrative semeiotic analysis of the themes, as well as the manifest (text) and latent (pictures) content, varying degrees of pro and antienvironmental ideologies reflected by these representations emerged. Analytic induction revealed that these representations reflected ideologies of human domination over nature. In addition, in most cases, the representation of the environment did not reflect or meet the goals of environmental education. This finding sheds light on the role children's books play in the environmental socialization of America's youth.

Autour de l’île d’Ezo : évolution des rapports de domination septentrionale et des relations avec l’étranger au Japon, des origines au 19ème siècle / From Barbaric Fringe to Northern Gate : Power Struggles, Foreign Relations and Scholars’ Debates on Ezo from the Heian period to the turn of the 19th-CenturyGodefroy, Noémi 23 November 2013 (has links)
After the 5th century, Japanese relations with foreign entities fit in a multi-Layered concentric distinction between a central arborescence radiating civilization and uncultivated outer fringes gravitating around it, whose barbaric quality increases according to their distance from it. This oppositional vision, inspired by the antique Chinese world-Order, gradually evolves into a dichotomous paradigm, often referred to as "Japanese middle kingdom ideology" (nihon gata ka.i chitsujo) at the end of the 15th century. A thorough study of the power struggles in the Japanese north reveals that despite two and a half centuries of selective foreign relations which earn Japan its reputation as a "locked-Up country" (sakoku), the barbaric figure shifts in terms of time, space and technical abilities. The barbarian is no longer viewed as a barely human entity, impure and underdeveloped, inhabiting peripheral contiguous fringes, who must be subdued, or even a "tamed barbarian" whose otherness is staged to legitimate domination over him. At the turn of the 19th century, due to an increasing Russian presence at its northern border, the barbarian has become a potentially dangerous yet worthy adversary, technologically advanced, who needs to be kept at bay (jô.i). Ezo's status is no longer that of a netherworld, or of a vast and empty wasteland, but that of a territory worth developing and protecting. Embodied by such shifts and treaties written by scholars advocating an adequate maritime defense (kaibô-Ron), agricultural development (kaitaku-Ron), the opening of foreign commercial relations (kaikoku-Ron) or "a prosperous country and a powerful army" at the end of the 18th century, the first stage in the transition from a closed to an open Japan stems from their influence on the decisions regarding foreign relations, as well as an ethical transvaluation which gradually transfers virtue from sakoku (protecting the population against Christian proselytism and commercial protectionism) to kaikoku (protecting the people from foreign harm and famine).

A apropriação do inconsciente na sociedade administrada: um estudo teórico a respeito da dimensão psíquica da dominação / The appropriation of the unconscious in the administered world: a theoretical study on the psychic dimension of dominationAlexandre, Victor de Sales 08 May 2019 (has links)
This dissertation is a theoretical study based on the Critical Theory of Society and some concepts of Freudian Psychoanalysis about the question of domination that falls on the individuals of the Administered World. With the objective of investigating the phenomenon of appropriation of the unconscious in the Administered World, the study focused on three main works by the authors T. W. Adorno and M. Horkheimer; \" Excerpt I Ulysses - or Myth and Enlightenment \", \"Freudian Theory and the Pattern of Fascist Propaganda\" and \"On the Relationship between Sociology and Psychology\". In addition to these major works, other authors\' texts, as well as a wide selection of writings by S. Freud and contemporary writers, complemented the theoretical materials investigated. Each of these works receives the central spot in one of the three chapters that organize the work and the theoretical articulations of the main elements present in these texts. The results demonstrate that part of the unconscious is constituted from the sedimentation process of conflicting contents in the course of the contradictory development of civilization; a depository of contents denied by history. Although society does not possess an unconscious, it carries with it, in its various institutions, the mark of the contradictions of progress, thus influencing the development of its members in a structural way. This research has further revealed that because of the different processes of weakening the individual, people become more susceptible to integrate mass movements, in which contents of their unconscious are manipulated by agitators and ideological discourses for the purpose of domination. The Administered World has demonstrated that it has a complex network of control over the people, by concealing the emancipatory possibilities of its members, who are imprisoned and unable to perceive the control mechanisms that govern their lives. The level of control that the administered world exerts on its members regularly depends on levels of influence that reach its psyche also in the unconscious dimension to ensure its success. In this way, it was also possible to investigate how there are different levels of control operating in people, and can culminate in the highest expression of this domination, the reflex subject, whose unconscious psychic determinations would be completely integrated with the social ones
