Skaitmeninės knygos kokybė vartotojo požiūriu / Digital Book Quality From The User's Perspective

Gudinavičius, Arūnas 27 December 2012 (has links)
The book trade and public policy in early modern Scotland c.1500-c.1720

Mann, Alastair January 1997 (has links)
Few historians would question the importance of national literature to the understanding of national history. Less frequently, especially in Scottish history, is equal attention given to the print medium. Publishing and the book trade represent a complex cocktail of conscience and commerce, of ideology and industry, and one of the tensions within the study of publishing, especially in the turmoil of the early modern period, is the assessment of motive underpinning the act of publication. Two objectives are sought in this research of the book trade of Scotland c1500 to c1720. The degree, scale, structure and financial basis of the book trade are considered. In particular, data obtained from a large number of existing and new references to individual booksellers and printers has been accumulated in order to establish the extent, development, and general pattern of commerce. Secondly, the interaction of public policy and the book trade is explored with separate chapters on the policy of the burghs, the church and the government. As part of government control close scrutiny is given to the law of publishing with chapters devoted to copyright and censorship, two themes for which adequate Scottish study is long overdue. In addition, a bridging chapter is included dealing with trade links between Scotland and the Low Countries, and this reflects vividly the conflicting demands of permission and prohibition for book merchants and book regulators. The research comes to two apparently contrasting conclusions. The book trade of early modern Scotland was in many respects similar to those of other European nations at this time, especially England and the Low Countries. The desire for profit and intellectual improvement, but also adequate controls, were common to all literate societies. Equally, although the beaches of Scottish print culture were battered by the influences of Dutch and English commercial, legal and administrative conventions, Scotland developed its own unique relationship to the printed word - a Scottish tradition.

(Česká) Fotografie v úpravě knižních obálek 60. let 20. století / (Czech) Photography in the design of book covers in the 1960´s

BOLKOVÁ, Petra January 2015 (has links)
Petra Bolková will be examining in her thesis the evolution of photography used on book covers in the 1960s; the period marked with certain political and cultural liberation. This study will attempt describing systematically in what ways certain artists and writers collaborated and what the difficulties of these collaborations were. It will also be examined how the author of a book and the artist delegated to design the book cover; the initial advertisement for a book, were influencing each other. What is more, the extent to which the graphic art reflects the content of the written word will be studied. Book covers became a covert space for experimenting with or even establishing new trends in the 1960s. Books covers became a new, independent fine art discipline which, essentially, was censored or criticized only occasionally. The goal of this thesis will also be gradually finding the numerous common grounds between photography, book typography and the final design, as photography and photomontage were used on book covers more frequently then classic original illustrations. Last but not least, this thesis will be looking at what emphasis was put on the visual side and how it was conditioned culturally or politically ect.

Karlsson, Anton January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this literature review is to investigate what previous research indicates about how students’ reading development is influenced when reading ordinary books or e-books, but also how their attitudes towards reading are influenced. I will also use Henk Linskens’s (2018) work Henke och Bokstäverna som Hoppar to exemplify my perspective on the results from the research. The result of all the research gathered indicates that there are no significant differences in reading development among students using e-books or traditional books. It appears to be slightly better to use traditional books to promote reading comprehension, while e-books seem to promote students’ word knowledge slightly better. In order to achieve a good result in both cases, a more knowledgeable adult is needed to support the student, which follows Vygotsky's socio-cultural perspective. When it comes to students’ attitudes towards reading, e-books create positive attitudes towards reading in general, which could be due to their many opportunities for individualization. However, there are big differences between boys and girls in the matter, where boys benefit from using e-books while reading and girls benefit from using traditional books.

O livro de literatura: entre o design visível e o invisível / The literature book: between the visible and invisible design

Iara Pierro de Camargo 11 March 2016 (has links)
Books intended for continuous reading as novels present mainly simple layouts. They are functional but aimed basically to reading and rarely drawing attention to its design. Simple projects like these, in a first analysis could be conceived as \"invisible\", accordingly to the concepts presented in Beatrice Warde\'s essay \"The Crystal Goblet\" or \"Printing Should Be Invisible\" from 1930. The idea of invisibility refers to the transparent design that doesn\'t hide the content (text) and it is based in composition labels that ensure quality. In opposition to this \"invisible\" approach, we see, nowadays and also in the beginning of the production of print books, literature books with a \"visible\" approach, that is, that present vignettes, capitulars, ornamentations, illustrations and also typographic experiments. This thesis, starting from examples found in specialized libraries, discuss these two approaches in five centuries of print books. The research privileges the study of two historical moments, in which these approaches are evident: The first decades of the 20th century, in which at the same time the \"invisible\" book was defended and there was also a production of many special and illustrated books in Europe and United States. The second moment, nowadays, in which we see most part of the works produced starting from templates and in which, as a \"visible\" alternative, we see the appearance of publishing houses like Cosac Naify (Brazil), Visual Editions (England), Almadía (Mexico) and Libros del Zorro Rojo (Argentina and Spain), which bring visual elements to their books. This research focuses on how to investigate the \"invisibility\" and the \"visibility\" at the design of press book literature (prose) as a way to promote the debate of these two categories and test the hypothesis that visibility in contemporary books is the result of an integration between graphic project and the literary text, what results in books that present an aesthetics function and also a semantical one, beyond the functional reading.

An analysis of the selections of the first year of the Book-of-the-Month Club

Unknown Date (has links)
In 1926 the Book-of-the-Month Club sent its first selection to 4,750 members. Twenty three years later the club had 4,000,000 members, had distributed over 100,000,000 books, and was one of sixty such clubs operating in the United States. Much discussion has taken place and many articles have been written during this period relative to the merits of these organizations. The attacks have been made largely on the following points: (1) the organization was foisting on the public in dictatorial fashion prescribed reading; (2) emphasis was placed on economy, rather than the excellence of the book; (3) the young or unknown author was unable to compete with authors of established reputations; (4) a few favored publishers were receiving club's business and would force smaller and newer firms out of business; (5) retail book stores were losing sales because club members were paying less than retail prices; and (6) the book clubs were lowering the public taste. Time has weakened many of these arguments and the fears have proved groundless. But the final charge relative to the lowering of public taste still remains current and debatable. The criticism on this point has been bitter and is one of great interest to the librarian. For this reason the purpose of this paper is to try to adjudge the validity of that contention by examining and analyzing the selections of one of the clubs for a limited period in order to see the quality of the selections as evidenced by the evaluations of critics, both at the time of the publications of the books and at the present time. / Typescript. / "August, 1950." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Robert G. The dividend books of the Book-of-the-Month Club: An appraisal and an evaluation

Unknown Date (has links)
The phenomenal rise in the number of book clubs in the United States in the past twenty-five years has resulted in much being written and said on the subject of their value. The success of these clubs has raised fears in the minds of some people that books may soon be tailored less to art than to the requirements of the clubs' mass audience. The success that the clubs have had in getting the American people to buy books when the booksellers and others have failed, can probably be attributed to one key word that is found in the publicity of all the clubs: "free." A controversy about the use of the word "free" has been raging for the last few years between the Book-of-the-Month Club and the Federal Trade Commission. The Commissioners were unable to agree with the Book-of-the-Month Club's contention that statements contained in the advertisements, disclosing those things which the customer must do in order to receive the so-called "free" books, "neutralize the probability or possibility of deception." The purpose of this paper is not, however, to discuss the controversy of the Book-of-the-Month Club versus the Federal Trade Commission, or to be concerned with the free or bonus aspect of any club's promotional endeavors. Its purpose is to consider whether or not books so obtained are worth having, be they "free," bonus, or priced, and whether or not they are creditable selections. In considering the question of dividend books it obviously would be desirable to evaluate the books distributed by all book clubs, but this would not be a project with a range of accomplishment within the scope of this paper. It was, therefore, decided to take as a specimen the divident books of one such club and to attempt to adjudge on the basis of critical opinion their merits. / Typescript. / "August, 1952." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Robert G. Clapp, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 46-47).
