Layaida, Nabil 12 June 1997 (has links) (PDF)

We must repeat : critical edition of DEVO's "Jocko Homo"

2013 October 1900 (has links)
This project sets out to create a critical edition of the DEVO song “Jocko Homo,” which is found on multiple releases throughout the band's career, most notably on their breakthrough studio album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! The album recording was used as the base text for this edition (the words themselves determined by what is heard on the album and the formatting determined by the lyric sheet which accompanies the album), with variants from five other officially-released recordings included as footnotes. Explanatory notes are also included at the end of the text, to illuminate surrounding contexts and allusions. Finally, an appendix is attached featuring an early live performance found on the bootleg album DEVO Ultracore 1974-77, along with explanatory notes. While it was not included in the main body of the project on the basis of its being an unofficial fan release, it is still worth examining as an early version of “Jocko Homo.”

Digitale Briefeditionen

Strobel, Jochen 20 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Utveckling av användargränssnitt för mobil resesökningsapplikation / Development of user interface for mobile travel search application

Wester, Erik, Henricsson, Christopher January 2008 (has links)
This report aims to answer how to design a user interface for a mobile application minimizing the amount of key presses, specifically text input. In this context, mobile application means a program designed to run on a mobile phone with a numerical keyboard. The application we’re designing is a travel search function for local bus traffic. For out test purposes we used the bus stops in Jönköping County.</p><p>We developed a design concept based on a menu system consisting of alphabetic groups for inputting names of towns and bus stops. From this we developed a prototype in Java Micro Edition which could later be evaluated after a small user test.</p><p>The prototype was tested on three people using a method developed at the software company Apple. The results revealed one significant flaw, which, fortunately, is easy to correct. The remaining problems were not considered to be any insurmountable hurdles for users to overcome. Response from the test subjects was positive in that they not only experienced fewer key presses, but also a simpler usage of the application.</p>

Construct bias in the differential ability scales, second edition (DAS-II) : a comparison among African American, Asian, Hispanic, and White ethnic groups

Trundt, Katherine Marie 11 September 2013 (has links)
Intelligence testing has had a relatively long and controversial history, beginning with what is generally considered the first formal measure of intelligence, the Binet-Simon Scales (1916). Questions regarding possible cultural bias in these measures arose virtually simultaneously (e.g. Burt, 1921; Stern, 1914). Over the course of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, an abundance of intelligence measures have been developed, with many of them having several revisions, but the issue of test bias remains an important one, both in the professional literature and in the popular press (Reynolds & Lowe, 2009). A current intelligence measure in use, the Differential Ability Scales, Second Edition (DAS-II, Elliott, 2007), is a test with growing popularity for assessment of children and youth, not only for its ease of use, but also for its appeal to young children and its nonverbal composite (among other things). Consequently, it is essential that there be empirical evidence supporting the use of the DAS-II as an appropriate measure of cognitive abilities for children of varying backgrounds. The test publishers conducted extensive research with a representative sample during test development in an effort to ensure that the measure met adequate reliability and validity criteria; however, the issue of test bias, particularly regarding cultural or racial/ethnic groups, was not explicitly addressed. This issue was raised and examined with the original DAS by Keith, Quirk, Schartzer, and Elliott (1999), but with the significant changes made from the first edition to the second, there is no guaranty that the evidence from the earlier would necessarily apply to the latter. The current study investigated whether the DAS-II demonstrates systematic construct bias toward children and youth of any of four ethnic groups: Black, Hispanic, Asian, and White. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis using data from the DAS-II standardization sample was used to assess whether criteria for increasingly strict levels of invariance were met across groups. Outcomes of this research contribute to an existing body of literature on test bias, as well as provide evidence regarding cross-group construct validity in the DAS-II. Ultimately the results of this study can be used to evaluate the appropriateness of the DAS-II for clinical use with certain ethnic groups and will help to emphasize further the importance of exploring these issues with all standardized tests. / text

Increasing the Performance and Predictability of the Code Execution on an Embedded Java Platform / Ansätze zur Steigerung der Leistungsfähigkeit und Vorhersagbarkeit der Codeausführung auf einer eingebetteten Java-Plattform

Preußer, Thomas 21 October 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explores the execution of object-oriented code on an embedded Java platform. It presents established and derives new approaches for the implementation of high-level object-oriented functionality and commonly expected system services. The goal of the developed techniques is the provision of the architectural base for an efficient and predictable code execution. The research vehicle of this thesis is the Java-programmed SHAP platform. It consists of its platform tool chain and the highly-customizable SHAP bytecode processor. SHAP offers a fully operational embedded CLDC environment, in which the proposed techniques have been implemented, verified, and evaluated. Two strands are followed to achieve the goal of this thesis. First of all, the sequential execution of bytecode is optimized through a joint effort of an optimizing offline linker and an on-chip application loader. Additionally, SHAP pioneers a reference coloring mechanism, which enables a constant-time interface method dispatch that need not be backed a large sparse dispatch table. Secondly, this thesis explores the implementation of essential system services within designated concurrent hardware modules. This effort is necessary to decouple the computational progress of the user application from the interference induced by time-sharing software implementations of these services. The concrete contributions comprise a spill-free, on-chip stack; a predictable method cache; and a concurrent garbage collection. Each approached means is described and evaluated after the relevant state of the art has been reviewed. This review is not limited to preceding small embedded approaches but also includes techniques that have proven successful on larger-scale platforms. The other way around, the chances that these platforms may benefit from the techniques developed for SHAP are discussed.
