The influence of contemporary events and circumstances on Virgil's characterization of Aeneas

Flint, Angela 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Ancient Studies)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / Chapter 1 begins by giving the 21st century reader of the Aeneid insights into the innovative socio-cultural environment of the Augustan Age. Following this is an investigation into the societal and cultural importance placed on the Four Cardinal Values in Augustan Age society. Virgil’s attitude to war has been a perennial topic of debate amongst Virgilian scholars. The focus of chapter 1 becomes more specific as it examines Virgil’s personal history, the socio-cultural environment of his childhood and the influence this may have had on his adult opinion of war and the way it is expressed in the Aeneid. An aspect of Virgil’s personal history that is fundamental to understanding his social context, is his relationship with Emperor Augustus. To conclude chapter 1, this is investigated with specific reference to two episodes in the Aeneid. In chapter 2, attention is given to particular aspects of Virgil’s portrayal of Aeneas’ heroic nature. The chapter opens with an examination of Virgil’s representation of Aeneas’ imperfect heroism, then suggests possible reasons behind the inclusion of ambiguity in this characterization. In addition to this, the question of Homeric characteristics in Virgil’s Roman hero is investigated. Chapter 2 then examines the more positive aspects of Virgil’s depiction of Aeneas’ heroism, concluding with a discussion on the favourable interpretation by Augustan Age Romans of Virgil’s demonstration of Aeneas’ heroic nature. Chapter 3 is devoted to a discussion of the manner in which Virgil’s environment influenced his presentation of Aeneas’ personal interactions. Prior to addressing the actual relationships, the chapter explores the question of Virgil’s characterization of Aeneas as somewhat uncommunicative in the epic. This chapter then concentrates on two main facets of Virgil’s portrayal of Aeneas’ personal relationships, i.e. those with family members and those with relevant non-family members that illustrate the extent to which Virgil’s social context influenced his composition of this poem. In conclusion, this study summarises the importance of viewing the Aeneid in its correct context. A bibliography is appended.

När bok blir film… : En jämförande analys av boken och filmen Catch me if you can

Juniku, Majlinda January 2008 (has links)

Abstract

Title: When book becomes film... – a comparative analysis of the book and film Catch me if you can (När bok blir till film…En jämförande analys av boken och filmen Catch me if you can)

Number of pages: 46

Author: Majlinda Juniku

Tutor: Amelie Hössjer

Course: Media and Communication Studies C

Period: Autumn term 2007

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University.

Purpose/Aim: To study what model of dramaturgy belongs to the film Catch me if you can and to see what has been crossed out, altered and added from the book so the narrative will fit this model.

Material/Method: The film Catch me if you can and the book with the same name has been used to analyze the differences between them. I have divided the differences into three categories: Crossed out, Altered and Added. In the analysis section these have been presented in each section of the film.

Main results: Catch me if you can is definetly a film made with the design of the Anglosaxon model, mostly because of its timestructure and that it portrays an action and not just a condition which is normal in the epic-lyric model. Big parts of the story have been crossed out, altered and added to make the film more acceptabel to the audience. Most of the changeshad been done to make the story shorter to fit the timeframe of a film. Events had been joinedtogether to save time but not miss anything. A character, Hanratty, has been reinforced to create a cat-and-mouse story and add excitement to the film. Other changes have been made to make the main character seem more likeable to the audience.

Keywords: book, film, dramaturgy, Catch me if you can, anglo-saxon, epic-lyric

Heroes and heels : investigating the star enactments of Charlton Heston

Limmer, Katherine Anne January 2011 (has links)
This investigation undertakes to re-centre the figure of the film star and their film appearances in the field of star study. To this end it uses Charlton Heston as its focus in a re-appraisal of existing methods of accounting for the star phenomenon in cinema. It also concomitantly re-assesses existing accounts of the significance of Charlton Heston as a film star. This thesis posits a robust method for identifying the specificities of the star’s contribution to a film’s meanings and effects across the body of their work by drawing on Andrew Britton’s understanding of the ‘star enactment’. Present approaches through which to engage with the details of a star’s performance are considered in detail and the weaknesses of those that seek to impose external schemas onto such discussions are highlighted. The difficulties with approaches that attempt to account for the star as a signifying phenomenon through the concepts of acting and performance are also considered. Existing methods which may allow for a fruitful investigation into the significance of the star enactment, such as the commutation test, are re- formulated in this study and their benefits are demonstrated through their application to key Heston star enactments. These new understandings are also made possible through the application of an ‘ekphrastic’ method of rendering film moments. Previous readings of Heston’s star figure are also re- appraised, and their conclusions questioned, through closer reference to the evidence of details from films. The fruitfulness of this method for analysing and commenting on film is thus demonstrated and Heston’s relationship to genre and its effect on performance style is also considered in order to be able to confidently assert the specific features of the Heston aesthetic.

Le récit de bataille. Coripp. Ioh. 5*,49-396 [5,1-348 Petsch.]. Commentaire, traduction et texte latin / Battle's report : coripp. Ioh. 5*,49-396 [=5,1-348 Petsch.]. Introduction, text, translation and commentary

Caramico, Giulia 16 April 2010 (has links)
Subject of this thesis is the commentary to Coripp. Ioh 5*,49-396 [=5,1-348 Petsch.], that is the description of Antonia Castra’s battle. My intention is to offer a study on Corippus’ work, where first is clear its literary importance. The heart of my thesis is the edition of the Latin text that is based on a new numbering of the verses and with some differences compared with the Diggle-Goodyear’s edition (Cambridge 1970). A very important philological discovery has allowed us to establish the real beginning of Iohannis’ book V, traditionally recognized until Diggle-Goodyear in a point determined by a G. Loewe's conjecture. In a rich introduction, divided into two sections and which precedes the commentary, we talk about the tradition of the Iohannis, through the Trivultianus 686, the only surviving manuscript, and we introduce the poet's historical background. After that, we describe the epic shapes of the book V, the very book of the Battle, between concrete history and literary stereotypes (furor bellicus like Erinys, generals’ cohortationes, aristiai, similies lead us to the same idea of “crusade” ante litteram, following an heroic and mythologic line).

Serjeant Musgrave\'s Dance de John Arden e o teatro épico do pós-guerra britânico: um estudo comparativo com Mãe Coragem e Seus Filhos de Bertolt Brecht / Serjeant Musgraves Dance by John Arden and the post-war British theatre: a comparative study with Mother Courage and Her Children, by Bertolt Brecht

Souza, Jonathan Renan da Silva 09 May 2019 (has links)
This work aims to analyse the play Serjeant Musgraves Dance (1959) by John Arden. To accomplish this, a contextualization of the post-Second World war period is made and subsequently a summary of the theatre in this period which established a new moment especially after 1956. The study also covers how the Epic Theatre was consolidated in Britain in the 1950s. Finally, a brief biography of the playwright is stated, highlighting his most important plays. In a second moment, an analysis of the play by John Arden considering its main formal and thematic aspects such as the war, messianism and the possibility of political agency by the individuals is presented. In the third chapter, the dissertation draws a contrast between Ardens play and the play Mother Courage and Her Children (1939) by Bertolt Brecht. From a comparative perspective, the political potential of Brechtian Epic Theatre as it was constituted in Ardens work and in Post-War Britain Theatre is pointed out.

A representação da história em A Bright Room Called Day, de Tony Kushner: aspectos utópicos e distópicos na relação entre conteúdo e forma / The representation of History in A Bright Room Called Day, by Tony Kushner: utopian and dystopian aspects of its relationship between content and form

Deus, Marcio Aparecido da Silva de 30 May 2019 (has links)
This dissertation aims at analyzing the representation of history in the play A Bright Room Called Day, by Tony Kushner, observing the utopian and dystopian aspects in its dialect relationship between content and form. Our analysis also highlights as a relevant feature of the play the fact that the context in which it was released, marked by a fierce capitalist culture and a media industry such as the one of the United States, concretely bears a niche area of epic theatre. In this sense, this research also tries to understand how the playwright uses the history of both Germany in the Rise of the Third Reich and of the USA in the Reagan era as the constitutive material in the composition of the studied dramaturgy. Fredric Jameson (1991, p. 284) states that Historicity is, in fact, neither a representation of the past nor a representation of the future (although its various forms use such representations): it can first and foremost be defined as a perception of the present as history. Taking that into consideration, the representation of the events in Kushners dramaturgy in Germany, Berlin, from 1932 to 1933, must be read critically as a remark for the present.

Vinclair, Pierre 14 March 2014 (has links)
This dissertation attempts to understand what it is exactly that makes an epic and a novel. Through a "comparative energetics" we propose to consider literature as a set of ‘economical’, ‘semiotical’ and ‘praxeonomical’ dispositions the use of which contributes to specific types of subjective rendering, ways of thinking and ideological domains. These three categories constitute the framework of the current endeavor: Textual economics is a theory of both production and consumption; semiotics decomposes into rhetorics and noetical analysis; praxeonomy into politics and ethics.Energetics consists in a new approach to literature, influenced by cultural anthropology, narratology, Hegel’s metaphysics and Austin’s pragmatics. Each section of the dissertation includes a “counterpoint" bringing up a transversal approach to works outside the main corpus considered, that either seem to escape the distinction between the established genres of novel and epic, e.g. popular Chinese novels, postcolonial novels, or purport to give its proper epic (epic poetry, humanitarian epic, etc) to modernity. These "counterpoints" also allow a comparison between the energetic approach and the “indigenous” poetics of the authors considered or their contemporaries.Energetics, both objecting to the "poetics of features" and to the "aesthetics of registers," provides a comparative definition of the epic (political disposition of collective subjectification by mobilizing tradition in the ceremony of recognition) and of the novel (ethical dispositif of individual subjectifive rendering by valuing originality in the performance of emancipation). It also sets the conditions for a possible modern epic.

An Epic Combo of Theatre and Games : Entertainment and immersion in games designed after epic theatre principles

Almlöf, Linnea, Jalonen, Matilda January 2019 (has links)
Some scientists claim that there's a connection between entertainment and immersion. The epic theatre wanted to distance the audience but at the same time encourage them to reflect and be entertained. The study intended to examine how entertaining and immersive the participants experienced a game designed after epic theatre principles. After playing such a game, the participants either answered a questionnaire or took part in an interview. In general, they experienced high or mid-high immersion and entertainment. However, there were large differences between different individuals. The experience might have been affected by an interest in the theme or similar games. Immersion and entertainment share some components that seem to make the concepts difficult to separate in practice. There's a value in further research to understand immersion, entertainment and reflection better, and also how these affect each other. This might lead to more critical thinking and knowledge amongst the population.

Análise formal de Death of Salesman, de Arthur Miler, e Rasga Coração, de Oduvaldo Vianna Filho: a utilização do épico / Formal analysis of Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and Rasga Coração by Oduvaldo Vianna Filho: the use of the epic

Oliveira, Ewerton Silva de 17 April 2012 (has links)
O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar e comparar as peças Death of a Salesman [Morte dum caixeiro viajante] (1949), do dramaturgo americano Arthur Miller (1915-2005), e Rasga Coração (1974), do dramaturgo brasileiro Oduvaldo Vianna Filho (Vianinha) (1936-1974), especialmente em relação aos elementos épicos presentes nelas. / The objective of this research is to analyze and compare the plays Death of a Salesman (1949), by the American playwright Arthur Miller (1915-2005), and Rasga Coração, by the Brazilian playwright Oduvaldo Vianna Filho (Vianinha) (1936-1974), especially concerning their use of epic elements. Both plays have a formal structure that presents past and present simultaneously on stage. Since a dramatic work always presupposes the scenic exposure of the present as a central characteristic, the fact that the past is part of the structure of Death of a Salesman and Rasga Coração transforms it into the most important epic element in both plays. Other epic elements of importance for the repre-sentation of social and historical conflicts of the United States in the forties and of Bra-zil in the first seven decades of the XX century will be examined as well. Another char-acteristic shared by these two plays is the fact that they discuss the generation conflict between father and son(s) in a way that combines the representation of private family affairs to the one of bigger social and historical forces. To study the nature of these so-cial forces represented in the two plays is another objective of this research, which will discuss and point out similarities and differences between them and their respective so-cial contexts.

A face heroica de Dionísio nas Dionisíacas de Nono de Panópolis / Heroism of Dionysus in Nonnus Dionysiaca

Lima, Paulo Henrique Oliveira de 30 August 2016 (has links)
This research intend to discuss the way Dionysus was transformed into epic hero in Nonnus Dionysiaca, an epic in forty-eight chants concerning the Dionysian Cycle, from the foundation of Thebes and the establishment of their ancestors to the Olympic apotheosis of the god. The analysis will be based on Dionysos features on the battlefield in opposition to the three main opponents in the poem, Lycurgus, Deríades and Pentheus. For a better understanding of the construction of Dionysus as a hero, an analysis is needed on the social and cultural context in which Nono composes his poem, as well as the poet\'s relationship with Homer, the Greek main epic poet. Attached are the chants XXXIX and XL of Dionysiaca in original greek and the translation made by me.
