Design for reflective behavioral change

Xu, Yi, M.F.A. 08 August 2012 (has links)
This report is concerned with using design to encourage reflective behavioral change through the use of everyday objects. Many designers have studied behavioral change in the context of sustainability and social interaction through information technology in the field of industrial design. While lacking of enough philosophical depth, those designs are mainly adopting symptom-focused approaches, which does not lead to a meaningful experience for users. The goal of the report is to create a reflective experience for behavioral change. My approach is to create a sense of situatedness, which is a holistic experience revolving around a product where designed artifacts recursively derive their meaning and is simultaneously the object of interpretation. This text will illustrate how the strategy of “playful disruption” can be applied to achieve the sense of situatedness in its three different levels: Action, Environment and Nostalgia. If the outcomes are intended to achieve reflective behavioral change, I contest that both playfulness and disruption are necessary; the strategy of “playful disruption” is most effective when applied in a subtle way. While studies of behavior change tend to focus on technology use, this research suggests that behavior change can be initiated in the physical environment through redesign of everyday objects and that subtly disrupt everyday routines. / text

Network-Based Monitoring of Quality of Experience

Junaid, Junaid January 2015 (has links)
The recent years have observed a tremendous shift from the technology-centric assessment to the user-centric assessment of network services. Consequently, measurement and modelling of Quality of Experience (QoE) attracted many contributions from researchers and practitioners. Generally, QoE is assessed via active and passive measurements. While the former usually allows QoE assessment on the test traffic, the latter opens avenues for continuous QoE assessment on the real traffic generated by the users. This thesis contributes towards passive assessment of QoE. This thesis document begins with a background on the fundamentals of network management and objective QoE assessment. It extends the discussion further to the QoE-centric monitoring and management of network, complimented by the details about QoE estimator agent developed within the Celtic project QuEEN (Quality of Experience Estimators in Network). The discussion on findings starts with results from subjective tests to understand the relationship between waiting times and user subjective feedback over time. These results strengthen the understanding of timescales on which users react, as well as, the effect of user memory on QoE. The findings show that QoE drops significantly when the user faces recurring waiting times of 0.5 s to 4 s durations in case of video streaming and web browsing services. With recurring network disturbances within every 8 s – 16 s time intervals, the user tolerance to waiting times decreases constantly, showing the sign of user memory of recent disturbances. Subsequently, this document introduces and evaluates a passive wavelet-based QoE monitoring method. The method detects timescales on which transient outages occur frequently. A study presents results from qualitative measurements, showing the ability of wavelet to differentiate on-fly between “Good” and “Bad” traffic streams. In sequel, a quantitative study systematically evaluates wavelet-based metrics. Subsequently, the subjective evaluation and wavelet analysis of 5 – 6 minutes long video streaming sessions on mobile networks show that wavelet-based metrics is indeed useful for passive monitoring of QoE issues. Finally, this thesis investigates a method for passive monitoring of user reactions to degrading network performance. The method is based on the TCP termination flags. With a systematic evaluation in a test environment, the results characterise termination of data transfers in case of different user actions in the web browser.

Kvinnor som genomgått mastektomi – Det blir aldrig som förr : En litteraturöversikt / Women who have undergone mastectomy – It will neverbe the same : A literature overview

Werner, Gabriella, Andersson, Jessica January 2015 (has links)
Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in women. Treatments of breast cancer are constantly developing which leads to a high rate of surviving women. Being affected of breast cancer can result in many intense feelings and a changed body. Most of the women who get affected by breast cancer are treated with surgical treatment. One operation that is used is mastectomy, an surgical operation where one or both breasts are being removed. This may lead to several feelings, changed body image and the women have to adapt to their new body. Aim: The aim of the overview was to explore women's experiences, thoughts and emotions after a mastectomy, due to breast cancer. Method: A literature overview study based on seven qualitative and three quantitative studies. Results: In the result four themes emerged, The body betrays and is no longer complete, You are not the same person anymore, Femininity and sexuality are lost and The social limitations. Conclusion: One of the main findings shown in the result was how the mastectomy changed the women's body image. It seemed to be difficult to accept the changed body, which became a constant reminder of the disease. The women no longer recognized themselves and therefore had a hard time when it came to show themselves in front of people in the surroundings. The women also felt limitations in social situations and the body became an obstacle; they did not feel comfortable, isolated themselves and avoided everyday activities. This is important to acknowledge as a nurse and be able to give adequate support in both short term and long term.

Att vara förälder till ett barn med självskadebeteende : En litteraturbaserad studie / To be the parent of a child with deliberate self-harm : A literature-based study

Börjesson, Elin, Strömberg, Sara January 2015 (has links)
Background: Self- harm among children is a growing problem in Sweden. The behavior means that persons deliberately hurt themselves. It´s not only the child who suffer from this behavior, it also affect the parents and siblings. It’s important that the nurse can give parents the support and information that they need. Research is limited when it comes to parents’ experience of having a child who deliberately harm her-/himself. Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate parents’ experiences of living with a child with deliberate self-harm. Method: A literature-based study based on analysis of ten qualitative articles was performed. Results: The result are presented in three categories; "Feeling responsible", "Desire to be a better parent", "Feeling invisible and extradited" Conclusion: Nurses need more knowledge about self-harm and how parents perceive their situation. Parents need more support and information from the nurse.

Pre-Teaching Concerns

Yerger, Sara January 2011 (has links)
This study was done to investigate the types and intensity of teaching concerns preservice teachers have during their coursework and how these are connected to early field experiences (EFE). A survey was conducted comparing preservice teachers in an on-campus versus an on-site course at a local elementary school. Participants (N = 99) were asked about 26 types of concerns and these groups were compared; only one significant difference was found, that the on-campus group had more general teaching concerns than the on-site group. Fuller's (1969; 1974) research on immature versus mature teaching concerns was corroborated by the survey items and factor analyses, although no change over time was found. School-based field experiences were significantly listed by both groups as being the most useful experience in their teacher education; therefore, it is recommended that opportunities be created for preservice teachers to participate in EFEs.

Question answer relationships: The effect and use of a questioning strategy with sixth-grade literature studies

Emert, Stacie Cook, 1962- January 1989 (has links)
This study investigates and assesses the effects of the QARs (Questions Answer Relationships) strategy on sixth grade students using a literature program. QARs is a strategy designed to help students better answer teacher and text questions by being able to categorize questions. One sixth grade, consisting of twenty-four students, participated in the study as the treatment group. A second sixth grade, consisting of twenty-four students, was used as the control group. Procedures included three days of training, four days of maintenance, and five days of students generating their own questions based on the QARs strategy. This was followed by one day of post test. The data was analyzed by comparing the total response scores of both groups on a set of comprehension questions and with the treatment identifying questions by using the QARs categories. Results indicate that training in QARs increases comprehension and enables students to answer with greater detail in responses.
