Mozart: A Musical Advocate

January 2010 (has links)
abstract: W.A. Mozart was a masterful creator of music and drama as well as a keen observer of human relationships. Librettists were enamored of his ability to bring their words to life with his music. His truthful portrayal of human relationships, particularly involving women, was highly influenced by his own life experiences. Through these relationships he learned to create characters and music that clearly depict female sibling relationships in the eighteenth century. A review of educational opportunities for women during the eighteenth century, Mozart's personal relationships, as well as selected roles in his operas will help to explain Mozart's portrayal of the eighteenth-century female sibling stereotypes. While Mozart's self-centeredness is well documented in biographies by Cliff Eisen and Ruth Halliwell, and the argument can be made that he surrounded himself with females who fulfilled his needs, he was often drawn to operas in which he could advocate musically for a female character's liberation from the overbearing influence of powerful men. Although Mozart's "musically empowered" women appear in nearly every opera, for the purpose of this paper, I will focus on the characters of Così fan tutte's Fiordiligi and Dorabella, and Le Nozze di Figaro's Countess. First, however, a closer analysis of Mozart's early life and his relationships with his sister and mother is necessary. The ways Mozart set characters created by DaPonte and Beaumarchais cannot be separated from the ways he was taught to appreciate females in his family of origin. Social structure during the eighteenth century dictated a woman's education, responsibility to her family, and therefore, played a fundamental role in defining her life. This situation often created expectations within the birth order that had an impact on sibling relationships as well as individual personalities. Many social and familial influences are represented through the operas of Mozart. Così fan tutte (January 26, 1790) and Le Nozze di Figaro (May 1, 1786) both contain a central female sibling relationship that reflects aspects of Mozart's relationships with women throughout his life. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Performance 2010

"The Hangout was Serious Business:" Exploring Literacies and Learning in an Online Sims Fan Fiction Community

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore the literacy practices members of an online fan community engage in to participate in the space and to question what learning happens through that participation. This dissertation is the product of a two-year virtual ethnographic study of The Sims Writers' Hangout (SWH), a discussion forum website established by fans of The Sims to support members' interests in creating and sharing Sims fan fiction. Affinity space theory informs an understanding of SWH's organization, and a definition of literacies as situated, social practices also frames the study. Data were collected following a discourse-centered online ethnographic approach, which guided systematic observation and interactions with eight key informants. The data corpus includes hundreds of pages of discussion forum posts, member profiles, moderator-created norming texts, numerous digital, multimodal Sims fan fiction texts, virtual interview responses from informants, field notes, and additional virtual artifacts, such as informants' websites and Flickr® photostreams. Study results are presented within three separate manuscripts prepared for publication and presentation, each exploring different lines of inquiry related to SWH. Chapter 3 focuses on tensions visible in the forum discussions to argue for an expansion of affinity space theory that accounts for the “hanging out” members do in the space. Chapter 4 analyzes one informant's literacy practices using a Design perspective. This analysis reveals the collaborative nature of Sims fan fiction literacies. The final manuscript (Chapter 5) offers an analysis of SWH pedagogy using Bernstein's pedagogic device concept. Data illustrate how pedagogic discourse in this online, informal learning space aligns with and challenges Bernstein's theory. Finally, Chapter 6 offers conclusions about how these three analyses expand our understanding of adolescent literacies and 21st century learning. This chapter also contains implications for theory and practice, recommendations for future research, and reflections on lessons learned. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction 2011

Comicidade e recepção : o riso de fãs de séries cômicas nacionais

Noll, Gisele Corrêa January 2014 (has links)
This research aims to understand how the national comedy series, through comicality, leads fans to discuss "serious" issues that concern social debate. The specific aims include investigate what causes of the individuals becaming fans of national comedy series, identify the themes that lead to laughter these fans, especially of the Tapas & Beijos, as well as see how Facebook can arise as a scenario of interaction between fans and with them to the station. So, we adopted as the central theoretical framework the Guillermo Orozco Gomes's model of Multiple Mediations, which means assuming that the audience is subjected, it was “in situation”, therefore, individually and collectively conditioned. Thus, the reception would be a process resulting from the reception/television interaction/mediation, mediation entering the continuous playing of the act of watching television at the same time that the extrapolate. Still adopted a fan terminology for viewers who develop a emotional relationship with Tapas & Beijos, as we sought to investigate the design of national authors on genres and formats on Brazilian television in programs that series had a comic narrative. The methodological procedures used to develop the analysis were observation of the posts related to Tapas & Beijos on Facebook and questionnaire (conducted via online form) to verify the laughing fans of national comedy series. The study highlights the importance of supertemas in how fans relate to the series from the friendship, the laughter, the fights, the camaraderie, passion, sex and verisimilitude with everyday life, mentioned as factors by which more fans identify with this kind of program. The research also shows that Facebook acts as a scenario of televidencia, a place which fans produces the sense one gets from television, a scenario of exchange and negotiation, where fans can make reference to what they saw or expect to see on television with other fans of Tapas & Beijos and with Rede Globo.

___________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The National Food and Nutrition Policy (PNAN) was approved by the National Council of Health, through the Ministry of Health´s order nº 710, of June 1999 and updated in 2011. The PNAN is recognized as an important guiding tool for the Food and Nutrition policies in the Unified Health System (SUS). For effectuation, strengthening, achievement and implementation of this policy guideline, it receives a specific resource known as Fund of Food and Nutrition (FAN) following SUS resources allocation standards, within the health municipalization, characterized by the regular and automatic fund to fund transfer to increase the autonomy of the states and federal district. The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of the fund to fund transfer in order to structuring and implementation of food actions and nutrition under State and Municipal levels based on National Food and Nutrition Policy-PNAN. This study used data from the national survey entitled Evaluation of annual allocation modality fund to fund for organization and implementation of food actions and nutrition in the SUS since 2006 to 2013, adopting the methodological triad structure-process-result. We used the data from the focus groups and from the self-applicable questionnaires for the Responsible Technical of Food and Nutrition (RTAN), totaling a sample of 83 different spheres of action managers. Quali-quantitative analysis was performed. The results were divided into two articles. Article 1 analyzed the rules that control the resources and it can be observed that the ministerial orders are an important instrument for the implementation and execution of food and nutrition action in Brazil and explains how to use the resource. It is concluded from the FAN analysis that the PNAN consolidation is partly linked to the purposes of the fund, once the existence of the resource enhances the performance of several actions of food and nutrition, through the powers conferred on the Union, States, County and the Federal District. Article 2 evaluated the use of the resource and found that the incentive of funding is very important for the strengthening of the area of Food and Nutrition (A&N), giving it greater visibility and contributing to the execution of part of the actions expected for in PNAN guidelines. Lack of human resources and lack of continuity of the activities were identified as this work limitations. You can also see the execution of many Federal Government projects and programs, such as the Pact for health and those related to Basic Health Care Activities. Therefore, it is suggested that the incentive of funding should be maintained and evaluation mechanisms should be incorporated to contribute to a more effective use of the fund.

YouTube Shakespeares: Encountering Ethical, Theoretical, and Methodological Challenges in Researching Online Performance

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: "YouTube Shakespeares" is a study of Shakespeare online videos and the people who create, upload, and view them on YouTube. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, this work is a remix of theories and methodologies from literary, performance, (social) media, fan, and Internet studies that expands the field of Shakespeare studies. This dissertation explores the role of YouTube users and their activities, the expansion of literary research methods onto digital media venues, YouTube as site of Shakespeare performance, and YouTube Shakespeares' fan communities. It analyzes a broad array of Shakespeare visual performances including professional and user-generated mashups, remixes, film clips, auditions, and high school performances. A rich avenue for the study of people's viewing and reception of Shakespeare, YouTube tests the (un)limitations of Shakespeare adaptation. This work explores the ethical implications of researching performances that include human subjects, arguing that their presence frequently complicates common concepts of public and private identities. Although YouTube is a "published" forum for social interactivity and video repository, this work urges digital humanities scholars to recognize and honor the human users entailed in the videos not as text, but as human subjects. Shifting the study focus to human subjects demands a revision of research methods and publications protocols as the researcher repositions herself into the role of virtual ethnographer. "YouTube Shakespeares" develops its own ethics-based, online research method, which includes seeking Institutional Board Review approval and online interviews. The second half of the dissertation shifts from methodology to theorizing YouTube Shakespeares' performance spaces as analogs to the interactive and imaginary areas of Shakespeare's early modern theatre. Additionally, this work argues that YouTube Shakespeares' creators and commentators are fans. "YouTube Shakespeares" is one of the first Shakespeare-centric studies to employ fan studies as a critical lens to explore the cultural significance and etiquette of people's online Shakespeare performance activities. The work ends with a conversation about the issues of ephemerality, obsolescence, and concerns about the instability of digital and online materials, noting the risk of evidentiary loss of research materials is far outweighed by a scholarly critical registration of YouTube in the genealogy of Shakespeare performance. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. English 2013
