Synthesis and Insecticidal Activity of Gem-Cyano Pyrethroids

Wilkerson, Michael G. 08 1900 (has links)
The synthesis and insecticidal activity of a series of 2,2-dicyano cyclopropane carboxylic acids, (3-phenoxyphenyl)- methyl esters were investigated. Synthesis of the compounds was accomplished by reaction of a dimethyl sulfonium carbethoxy ylide with propanedinitrile alkylidene compounds. Final products were formed in one step by use of the (3-phenoxyphenyl)-methyl ester of the ylide. Insecticidal activity was determined at 500 ppm application with Permethrin as the standard against houseflies, mexican bean beetles, and southern army worms.

Immunopathologie des podocytopathies acquises : rôle de c-mip dans les perturbations immunitaires et podocytaires / Immunopathology of acquired podocytopathy : role of c-mip in alterations of immune system and podocytes

N'Gome Sendeyo, Kelhia 17 December 2013 (has links)
Mots clefs :C-mip, Syndrome Néphrotique à Lésions Glomérulaires Minimes, Glomerulonéphrite Extra Membraneuse, signalisation proximale, lymphocyte T, podocyte, cytosquelette / Minimal Change Nephrotic Syndrome (MCNS) and Membranous Nephropathy (MN) are two primitive immune podocytopathies associating immune alterations and podocyte damage ultimately leading to proteinuria. Although the immune origin of the disease is corroborated by numerous clinical data, the mechanisms involved are still unknown. In previous works by the team, the c-mip protein was found expressed in T lymphocytes (TL) from patients with MCNS relapse, and in podocytes from MCNS and MN patients, while it is physiologically repressed. The aims of the present work were: firstly, to investigate the rôle of c-mip in TL by the study of Lck-cmip transgenic mice (Tg); secondly, to understand c-mip function in podocyte using a rat experimental model of human MN (Heymann nephritis).Transgenic mice overexpressed specifically c-mip in peripheral mature TL. This expression led to an altered TL phenotype characterized by accumulation of naïve LT associated with inhibition of TH1's and TH2's cytokines, after T-specific activation ex vivo. This negative regulation was correlated with an increase in the inactive forms of Src kinases and a blockage of the lipid raft clustering required for immunological synapse formation. These results suggest that (i) c-mip is a negative regulator of the proximal signaling events associated with TL activation involved in proximal signaling and (ii) it could be involved in the TL hyporeactivity described in SNLGM patients. In the study based on passive Heymann Nephritis, the experimental model of MN, the results highlight a correlation between podocyte expression of c-mip and proteinuria. This expression is associated, on the one hand, with a decrease in synaptopodin levels, which generate a decrease of RhoA activity resulting in podocyte cytoskeleton disorganization, and on the other hand with DAPK (Death Associated Protein Kinase) and ILK (Integrin Linked Kinase) induction, known to be involved in pro-apoptotic mechanisms. Cyclosporin A inhibited c-mip expression and restored the basal levels of DAPK, ILK and Rhoa activity. These results suggest that in podocyte, c-mip could be involved in proximal signaling alterations leading to nephrotic proteinuria. In conclusion, c-mip could play a crucial rôle in both the lymphocyte and podocyte alterations observed in patients suffering from primitive podocytopathies, strongly suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target in these disorders.Key words :C-mip, MCNS, MN, proximal signaling, Src kinase, T lymphocyte, podocyte, cytoskeleton

In addition, this study also investigates how this teacher perceives her own affectivity and its influence on her pedagogical practice. The paper also presents my perception as a researcher and as a teacher who works in the same school system, same cycle and same region as the participating teacher. In order to complete all the phases of this research, criteria from qualitative research were used. Thus, the guiding assumptions of the present study are grounded in the case study and some aspects of interpretative research. The data analysis is based on theoretical principles arising from Vygotsky’s (2004, 2007, 2008), Bakhtin’s (1993, 1997, 2006), Voli’s (2002) and Arnold and Brown’s (2005) thoughts. The authors address the construction of the subject, considering above all the role of language, the participation of the Other, of the social aspects and of each individual’s uniqueness, as well as the importance of considering affectivity as a relevant aspect of the subject. The analysis carried out from the data and from the relationship among them, along with the theoretical framework used, shows that the participation of an English teacher’s affectivity is so obvious that the participant herself can perceive the influence of this affectivity in the methodology adopted by her, in the kind of activities used, in her way to explain the content and to call students’ attention, in the way she interacts with each of them and with the group. The results from the data discussion also make it possible to affirm that the English teacher’s affectivity not only has influence over the environment, but also arises from oneself through the interactions with the unique individuals present in it, which occur through language. These findings lead to the perception of the uniqueness of the EFL teacher and of one’s affectivity, as well as the need to admit that emotions permeate the pedagogical work. By recognizing the significant influence of affectivity on the construction of the subject and of one’s actions, we will be able to research more and better about the matter at issue, which in turn will help us to cope better with teachers’ affectivity, thus bringing about positive results for the EFL classroom.

Petrology and Mineralogy of Quaternary Basalts, Gem Valley and Adjacent Bear River Range, Southeastern Idaho

Perkins, William D 01 May 1979 (has links)
Quaternary basalts of Gem Valley, Idaho, are present as valley fill (Group 1) and as well defined flows in the Bear River Range (Group 2) east of Gem Valley. Minerals present in both groups of basalts include olivine (Fo73 -Fo39), augite (Wo41 En39 Fs20), plagioclase (An75 -An40), and Fe-Ti oxides. Coexisting pairs of magnetite and ilmenite, and olivine and clinopyroxene in several samples indicate temperatures of crystallization from 958°c to 1167°c. The Group 2 basalts exhibit a cumulate texture with abundant large (2 cm) phenocrysts of plagioclase. Chemically, the Gem Valley basalts are similar to the basalts of the Snake River Plain with respect to SiO2, total Fe, P2O5 and Na2O but differ in the amounts of Al2O3 and MgO present. The Al2O3 is generally higher and the MgO is generally lower in the Gem Valley basalts. Comparing Group 1 with Group 2 basalts, the Group 2 basalts generally have more alumina and alkalis than the Group 1 basalts. Chemically both groups of basalt exhibit characteristics of the tholeiitic basalt suite, because they are hypersthene normative. Mineralogically, both groups of basalt contain but one pyroxene, augite, which is characteristic of the alkali-olivine basalt suite. This apparent contrast in classifications may be resolved by referring to these basalts as transitional between the alkali-olivine and tholeiitic basalt .suites, with the restriction that no genetic relationship to either suite is implied. Within the limits of this study, it is proposed that the Group 1 basalts may have formed by the partial melting of mantle material with a pyrolite composition. Furthermore, the Group 2 basalts appear to have originated as a result of the accumulation of plagioclase in a fractionating magma of Group 1 composition.

Functional characterisation of novel mast cell genes.

Sisavanh, Mary, Biotechnology & biomolecular sciences, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
The development of microarray technology has provided an unprecedented wealth of data on gene expression in various tissue and cell types. Few studies have, however, taken full advantage of these data by selecting and then extensively characterising the functions of particular genes chosen from these microarray datasets. In this study, after analysing differentially-regulated genes revealed by microarray analysis of human mast cells activated via Fc??RI cross-linking, we chose two promising gene candidates for further research, A20 and Gem. Our group??s extensive gene expression database of major leukocytes showed that both A20 and Gem were up-regulated in other leukocyte types, and yet neither of these genes has been extensively explored in mast cells or in the immune system prior to our study. In order to investigate the first of these genes selected for further study, A20, we utilised both A20-deficient mast cells and mast cells in which A20 was over-expressed. Our findings establish for the first time that A20 is an important regulator of mast cell inflammatory responses to both LPS and Fc??RI cross-linking, and that it plays a novel role in mast cell proliferation. Our study of the second gene chosen for investigation, Gem, was conducted in a Gemdeficient mouse model developed by our group. In this study, we investigated the effect of Gem deficiency in two key immune cell types, macrophages and T-cells, complementing the work of a previous group member who investigated Gem deficiency in mast cells. Our results clearly exclude a role for Gem in macrophage and T-cell effector responses, and further establish that Gem is dispensable for in vivo inflammatory responses in models of delayed-type hypersensitivity and allergic airway inflammation. In addition to these findings, and given that the physiological role of Gem was not yet understood prior to our study, we extended our investigation to explore a potential function for Gem in the metabolic system. Using Gem-deficient mice, we found that Gem is necessary for insulin secretion from pancreatic islets. These findings confirm the potential for microarray expression data to reveal excellent gene candidates for further research and functional characterisation.

Careborg, Kristina January 2010 (has links)

Suggestions for Improvements on Shanghai’s Entrepreneurial Environment : A Comparative Study Based on the Different Perspectives of Experts and Undergraduates

Feng, Qiao, Liu, Jianchao January 2009 (has links)
<p>This study focuses on undergraduates in Shanghai and aims to generate some practical implications on how to improve the entrepreneurial environment by enhancing undergraduates’ entrepreneurial intentions. The authors initiated an analytical model with support from the GEM conceptual model and Krueger’s intention model (2000) to carry on an investigation among local undergraduates. The data reflects an actuality of undergraduates’ entrepreneurial intention. On the other hand, by the correlation analysis, undergraduates’ preferences upon different aspects of entrepreneurial environment are filtered out. Finally, practical implications are given through two aspects. One is divisions of respondents by their different grades of entrepreneurial intentions; the preferences from the higher intentioned group will firstly be suggested to improve. The other one is based on the comparison between undergraduates’ valuation and experts’ measurement on the entrepreneurial environment.</p><p>In conclusion, the study reflects that the analytical model is applicable to undergraduates in Shanghai. To enhance undergraduates’ entrepreneurial intention, it is highly recommended by the authors to improve entrepreneurial environment through more attention to the feasibility of technology transfer, sufficient government programs for new firms, the effectiveness of technological region, and government projects.</p>

Educational gems: an exploration and evaluation of a visual functional programming environment

Parkin, Adam Robert 31 August 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines the pedagogical value of a particular visual programming environment (VPE) called the Gem Cutter which is based upon the functional programming paradigm. The contribution of this thesis is two-fold: it provides a qualitative evaluation via the Cognitive Dimensions Framework developed by Green to explore the usefulness of the Gem Cutter environment from a pedagogical viewpoint, and secondly provides a framework called the Word Game Framework designed in the Gem Cutter which can be used to create exercises for sudents learning to program. The Word Game Framework allows students to create interactive turn-based "wordgames" and provides an engaging environment for students to explore interesting and useful functional programming concepts such as recursion, higher order functions, type inference, and list processing.

Modeling Of Carbon Dioxide Sequestration In A Deep Saline Aquifer

Basbug, Basar 01 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT MODELING OF CARBON DIOXIDE SEQUESTRATION IN A DEEP SALINE AQUIFER BASBUg, BaSar M.S., Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Fevzi G&uuml / mrah July 2005, 245 pages CO2 is one of the hazardous greenhouse gases causing significant changes in the environment. The sequestering CO2 in a suitable geological medium can be a feasible method to avoid the negative effects of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. CO2 sequestration is the capture of, separation, and long-term storage of CO2 in underground geological environments. A case study was simulated regarding the CO2 sequestration in a deep saline aquifer. The compositional numerical model (GEM) of the CMG software was used to study the ability of the selected aquifer to accept and retain the large quantities of injected CO2 at supercritical state for long periods of time (200 years). A field-scale model with two injectors and six water producers and a single-well aquifer model cases were studied. In a single-well aquifer model, the effects of parameters such as vertical to horizontal permeability ratio, aquifer pressure, injection rate, and salinity on the sequestration process were examined and the sensitivity analyses were performed after simulating the field-scale model. The supercritical CO2, one-state fluid which exhibits both gas and liquid-like properties, and gaseous CO2 were sequestered in the forms of free CO2 bubble, dissolved CO2 in brine and precipitated CO2 with calcite mineral in a deep saline aquifer. The isothermal condition was assumed during injection and sequestration processes. The change in porosity and permeability values that might have occurred due to mineralization and CO2 adsorption on rock were not considered in this study. Vertical to horizontal permeability ratio and initial pressure conditions were the most dominating parameters affecting the CO2 saturation in each layer of the aquifer whereas CO2 injection rate influenced CO2 saturation in middle and bottom layers since CO2 was injected through bottom layer.
