[en] REPRESENTATIONS NON-FIGURATIVES OF PAIN / [pt] REPRESENTAÇÕES NÃO-FIGURATIVAS DA DOR

LUIZ CARLOS COELHO DE OLIVEIRA 03 April 2019 (has links)
(IF, 245). / [en] This dissertation investigates non-figurative discursive ways of presentation of pain to see, go on from there, the possible modalities of enunciation of self-expression that, even reacting to a crisis of representation, call into question a sense of real as unrepresentable. The study focuses on the writings of three authors in the twentieth century responded with different emphasis to the issue addressed here: Ludwig Wittgenstein, Antonin Artaud and Henry Miller. The issue that is shaping this work is caused by the predilection of Wittgenstein for the theme of pain in his Philosophical Investigations in the treatment of private language argument. Wittgenstein at this point calls for a reflection that addresses the manifestations of language related to pain, not being the representation of individual s inner world, constitutes behaviors exercised in specific language games that give them relevance. ―How I can even attempt to interpose language between the expression of pain and the pain? (PI, 245). First of all, it proposes a reflection that, from Wittgenstein s warnings, addressed to question a defense of the unrepresentable, looking for a reading of discursive modes of Wittgenstein s own for the presentation of occasions in which the expression of pain by language not being a representation is a behavior before the pain. And, secondly, a reading of works by Antonin Artaud and Henry Miller whose pain treatment, in view of this reading of Wittgenstein, presents discursive modalities engaged in a non-figurative expression and averse to a real sense as unrepresentable.

Notes Towards a Mental Breakdown : det teknologiska traumat i J.G. Ballards The Atrocity Exhibition

Nyke, Siri January 2009 (has links)

This study examinates technology's traumatic impact on the male subject in The Atrocity Exhibition by J.G. Ballard. In my analysis I show how the protagonist uses a fetischistic strategy in order to make sense of the trauma that technology embeds. Paradoxically it proves to be the agent of his trauma, but also functions as his shield. The machine is thus in a position of the hinge, the point in a structural system that both enables and deconstruct the system. In the same position we find the woman. She is the very epicentre of the novel and the violence directed towards her is part of a complex problem that I adress. The woman is divided into pieces and fetischized by the male gaze to serve as a solution for his trauma.

Hal Foster's notion ”the double logic of prosthesis” constitutes a theoretical base. The model shows how a fetischistic strategy is applied by avant-garde artists to solve the technological trauma that they experience. Both content and composition of The Atrocity Exhibition are inspired by avant-garde practices, I have therefore compared the text with Foster's theory on how the avant-garde problematized the interaction between man and machine. Marshall McLuhan's belief that the human body and technology are inseparable in the era of electronics further helps me to study technology's effect on perception.

Exhibiting the East : An Analysis of Representations of Pacific Asia in Three Exhibitions in Stockholm

Cho, Yul January 2023 (has links)
This thesis is a study of representations of Pacific Asia in exhibitions in Stockholm. In the Swedish culture and art sphere, a public discussion surrounding Asia is conspicuously absent even though there are significant amounts of residents in Sweden with an Asian background. The thesis analyses three selected exhibitions: Korea Gallery at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Dreamers’ Quay, Dreamers’ Key at Bonniers Konsthall, and From dying to living at Moderna Museet. The material consists of field observations, exhibition catalogs, handouts, wall texts, and interviews with the involved curators alongside with the exhibitions themselves. The thesis aims to initiate a critical discussion around the representations of the so-called “Other” and the implications of curatorial approaches in these exhibitions that primarily revolve around Asian themes with the help of the following research questions: 1) How is Asia portrayed and represented in each exhibition?; 2) What perception of Asia and Asianness is conveyed through the exhibitions as well as by the way of other related material?; and 3) How is the curatorial approach to the exhibitions with ethnographic themes revolving around Asianness? The qualitative case studies assess both the content and visuals of the exhibitions and the preparation processes of the exhibitions, and theoretically, they are informed by Stuart Hall’s theory of representation as well as Hal Foster’s and Miwon Kwon’s writings on the artist as ethnographer. Through an examination of the three case exhibitions, the thesis finds that representations of Asia are varied and have benefited from extensive curatorial efforts but show occasional weaknesses in terms of displaying the Other. The thesis contributes to a better understanding of representations of Asia in exhibitions in Sweden and hopefully paves the way for future research of this kind.
