Philosophical-Methodological Problems of Economics: Project of Economic Phenomenology / Filosoficko-metodologické problémy ekonomie: projekt ekonomické fenomenologieSvoboda, Miroslav January 2013 (has links)
In recent years, the economic approach to human behavior has been challenged by contributions of cognitive science. Thus two methodological strands in economics disagree with each other: the objectivistic approach favors the methods of natural science; the subjectivistic approach takes the teleological structure of human action as its cornerstone. It is argued that the position of the latter has been undermined and often degraded to a mere instrumentalist tool because it builds upon the primitive version of the teleological structure. Its deeper realist analysis is needed, which is the task for economic phenomenology: it identifies invariant pragmatic structures of human action, with various degrees of their anonymity. If the economic approach is founded on those structures adequately, then both rational choice theory and bounded rationality theories become compatible, as they differ in their degrees of anonymity only; they both belong to the body of the (subjectivistic) economic approach to human behavior. Economic phenomenology also offers a solution to the phenomenon of inconsistency of human action which is documented by cognitive sciences as a proof of human irrationality. The thesis shows that once the decision maker's description of the choice is allowed, inconsistency may disappear. Consistency is a matter of thinking, not acting. Therefore, a conceptual analysis of human thinking is needed. An example of the analysis is presented. It concentrates on the phenomenon of Self and works up the concept of the horizontality of Self. With this concept, inconsistency of human action is derived as a natural characteristic of our being-in-the-world. Inconsistency of human action is a pragmatic structure of human action, which even allows the decision maker some intentional control.

estabelecimento de limites à criança. Os limites aqui estão sendo tomados como sinônimo de disciplina. Durante muito tempo, atuando em uma instituição particular de ensino,
observou-se a existência de muitos conflitos entre pais e professores quando o tema em foco é disciplina. Isso implica que os pais argumentam, com a maior naturalidade, que não sabem mais que procedimentos adotar para disciplinar seus filhos e os professores, na maioria das vezes, não sabem o que fazer ou que atitude tomar ao verem um aluno agitando na sala-deaula. Em decorrência das inquietações relatadas anteriormente, cresceu a necessidade de investigar a concepção que os pais e os professores têm acerca dos limites que poderão ser aplicados às crianças, especialmente em decorrência de seus comportamentos inadequados.
Nesse sentido, foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa, com 15 educadores (sendo cinco professores, cinco mães e cinco pais) que tinham seus filhos ou alunos matriculados
regularmente no Ensino Fundamental-I de escolas particulares. Através das entrevistas realizadas, foi possível observar a dificuldade que os pais e os professores vêm sentindo quando o tema em pauta é disciplina. Por outro lado, nota-se uma convergência acerca da concepção de limites, bem como das repercussões que sua falta pode acarretar. Pode-se também constatar a influência das concepções de gênero, da mídia e das pressões às quais as pessoas são submetidas na sociedade atual: os pais sendo absorvidos pelo trabalho e outras preocupações do dia-a-dia; os professores sendo obrigados a tratar os alunos como clientes, devido à competitividade entre as escolas particulares, que precisam dos alunos, e queixosos da falta de sua educação doméstica. Acredita-se que esta pesquisa possa oferecer uma contribuição aos profissionais e estudiosos interessados nos temas família e escola. Les empreintes digitales recueillies par détection systèmes offrent de nouvelles façons de percevoir les comportements d'un individu. En outre, de grandes collections d'empreintes numériques des communautés apportent de nouvelles compréhensions des comportements humains. La perception des comportements humains à partir des empreintes digitales de détection permet de construire des nouvelles applications sur les systèmes de détection. D’après les empreintes digitales recueillies avec l'accéléromètre embarqué dans les téléphones mobiles et les taxis équipés avec GPS, nous présentons ici notre travail sur la reconnaissance des comportements individuels, la capture des comportements communautaires et la démonstration des nouveaux services activés. En reconnaissant les comportements individuels, nous présentons la reconnaissance des activités physiques d'une personne avec les lectures de l'accéléromètre recueillies à partir des téléphones mobiles mis dans les poches autour de la zone pelvienne. Avec les empreintes GPS d'un taxi, nous résumons les comportements anormaux du transport des passagers pour un individu et améliorons l'efficacité de la reconnaissance de la méthode existante IBOAT. En outre, sur la base des observations dans la vie réelle, nous proposons une méthode pour détecter les événements de changement de service d’un taxi individuel. Avec des traces GPS à grande échelle et à l’aide des milliers de taxis, nous étudions les comportements anormaux pour le transport des passagers et les comportements de changement de travail et exploitons les stratégies de service de taxi. En outre, nous présentons un système intelligent de taxi comme une étude exemplaire des nouvelles applications qui s’appuie sur les comportements perçus individuelles et communautaires / The digital footprints collected from the prevailing sensing systems provide novel ways to perceive an individual's behaviors. Furthermore, large collections of digital footprints from communities bring novel understandings of human behaviors from the community perspective (community behaviors), such as investigating their characteristics and learning the hidden human intelligence. The perception of human behaviors from the sensing digital footprints enables novel applications for the sensing systems. Bases on the digital footprints collected with accelerometer-embedded mobile phones and GPS equipped taxis, in this dissertation we present our work in recognizing individual behaviors, capturing community behaviors and demonstrating the novel services enabled. With the GPS footprints of a taxi, we summarize the individual anomalous passenger delivery behaviors and improve the recognition efficiency of the existing method iBOAT by introducing an inverted index mechanism. Besides, based on the observations in real life, we propose a method to detect the work-shifting events of an individual taxi. With real-life large-scale GPS traces of thousands of taxis, we investigate the anomalous passenger delivery behaviors and work shifting behaviors from the community perspective and exploit taxi serving strategies. We find that most anomaly behaviors are intentional detours and high detour inclination won't make taxis the top players. And the spatial-temporal distribution of work shifting events in the taxi community reveals their influences. While exploiting taxi serving strategies, we propose a novel method to find the initial intentions in passenger finding. Furthermore, we present a smart taxi system as an example to demonstrate the novel applications that are enabled by the perceived individual and community behaviors

Environmental Design Research and the Design of Urban Open Space: A Study of Current Practice in Landscape ArchitectureMasters, Jennifer 01 January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
A large and growing body of research exists on how the design of the environment can positively or negatively affect people’s health and well-being, as well as influence their behavior. Researchers in this field, known as “environmental design research,” have long acknowledged the challenge of translating their findings into formats that are accepted and used by practitioners. This study explores how environmental design research on urban open space and the practice-oriented translations of it are used by landscape architects who have been recognized in the profession for their designs of parks, plazas, and streets in urban areas. Through interviews with practitioners, an understanding emerges of the impact of environmental design research on contemporary practice, leading to recommendations that could enhance it in the future.
Key findings of the study indicate that translations of the research, specifically in the form of design guidelines, while intended to inform practice, are not widely used by designers. Rather, to understand how design impacts human behavior, practitioners rely primarily on what they refer to as intuition, largely informed by their own direct observations of people in public space. The quality of their personal observations, therefore, is critical to their depth of understanding of human behavior and the environment.
The study concludes with recommendations that could improve the skills of design students and practitioners to conduct, interpret, and apply their own direct observations in their designs, using methods and findings from the field of environmental design research to inform and enrich this process.

Modeling, Training, and Teaming Approaches for Cyber-Physical-Human SystemsSooyung Byeon (18431625) 26 April 2024 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">Cyber-physical-human systems (CPHSs) integrate human cognitive capabilities into the decision and control processes of complex dynamical systems. While artificial intelligence (AI) has shown promise in controlling such systems, it often encounters challenges such as conflict with human behavior and brittleness. Moreover, even successful AI implementations may lead to negative impacts on humans, such as the degradation of manual skills and diminished situation awareness, thereby weakening humans' ability to effectively monitor and intervene in off-nominal conditions as the final decision-makers of the systems. To address these unique challenges within CPHSs, this dissertation proposes three key approaches. First, human behavior modeling approaches are proposed to enhance understanding and prediction of human behavior from the perspective of AI. Accurate modeling enables better calibration of AI's expectations regarding human teammates' intentions and skill-levels. Second, a novel shared control approach is developed to expedite human training for complex dynamic control tasks. An assistant agent supports human novices in emulating human experts by leveraging human behavior models to gauge the human's skill-levels and provide tailored assistance to help improve one's skill. Lastly, human-autonomy teaming (HAT) design is addressed from a resource allocation perspective. A systematic computational simulation approach is proposed to optimize function and attention allocation to manage trade-offs in performance, situation awareness, workload, and other considerations. The proposed frameworks are demonstrated via examples in drone applications. Numerical and experimental results, utilizing simulation platforms and human subjects, validate the efficacy of the proposed approaches. This dissertation presents significant progress in the design and implementation of CPHSs in that it offers insights and methodologies to enhance collaborative interactions between humans and autonomous systems in complex environments.</p>

Three Essays in Applied Microeconomics and Behavioral EconomicsCampbell, Zakary Adam January 2024 (has links)
This thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter examines the impact of judicial discretion and left-digit bias on criminal sentencing outcomes. Judicial discretion allows judges to make nuanced decisions, taking into account details of legal cases that are not directly covered by law. However, judicial discretion can also expose behavioral biases and lead to irrational decision-making. I test for the existence of a particular behavioral bias: age-based left-digit bias. Specifically, I use a regression discontinuity design to test for changes in sentencing decisions occurring on an offender's 20th birthday using data on sentencing decisions from the state of Pennsylvania. I find that an offender sentenced just after his/her 20th birthday is 3.5 percentage points more likely to be sentenced to incarceration than an offender sentenced just before his/her 20th birthday. I test for evidence of conscious mechanisms underlying this effect and find no such evidence, leaving an unconscious bias as the best available explanation.
Chapter two examines the impact of highly publicized police killings of black individuals on the racial gap in birth outcomes. Police killings of Black Americans are increasingly being met with significant media coverage and public response, including civil unrest. Given the frequency with which these events occur, it is vital to understand both their direct and indirect impacts. Using national birth certificate data and an event study design, I test for the impact of high-profile police-involved killings of Black Americans on racial disparities in maternal stress levels and birth outcomes. I find a large, statistically significant, and persistent increase in gestational hypertension of Black mothers relative to White mothers, strongly indicating an increase in the racial gap in maternal stress following these high-profile killings. I find limited evidence of an accompanying effect on the racial gap in birth outcomes. However, many existing papers similarly find no impacts of maternal stress on birth outcomes while simultaneously finding significant impacts on later-life outcomes, leaving room for additional future work based on these findings.
How does the content of public communication by elected representatives change in response to highly salient, politically polarizing events? In Chapter 3, I examine this question using the text of tweets from members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, an n-gram text regression model and sentiment analysis alogorithms, and an event study design focused on mass shootings in the U.S. Observable effects on communication are concentrated on the day of and the day following a mass shooting. Republican members of Congress exhibit a reduced tweet frequency relative to Democratic members of Congress in the immediate aftermath of a shooting, while Democratic members of Congress speak with a more clearly differentiated Democratic vocabulary. Members from both parties speak with a more negative vocabulary. With Republicans collectively disengaging and Democrats collectively highlighting their partisan identification, this may suggest that Democrats are taking advantage of an opportunity for a political and/or policy win while Republicans in the same period are choosing to avoid additional political and/or policy losses.

Enhanching the Human-Team Awareness of a RobotWåhlin, Peter January 2012 (has links)
The use of autonomous robots in our society is increasing every day and a robot is no longer seen as a tool but as a team member. The robots are now working side by side with us and provide assistance during dangerous operations where humans otherwise are at risk. This development has in turn increased the need of robots with more human-awareness. Therefore, this master thesis aims at contributing to the enhancement of human-aware robotics. Specifically, we are investigating the possibilities of equipping autonomous robots with the capability of assessing and detecting activities in human teams. This capability could, for instance, be used in the robot's reasoning and planning components to create better plans that ultimately would result in improved human-robot teamwork performance. we propose to improve existing teamwork activity recognizers by adding intangible features, such as stress, motivation and focus, originating from human behavior models. Hidden markov models have earlier been proven very efficient for activity recognition and have therefore been utilized in this work as a method for classification of behaviors. In order for a robot to provide effective assistance to a human team it must not only consider spatio-temporal parameters for team members but also the psychological.To assess psychological parameters this master thesis suggests to use the body signals of team members. Body signals such as heart rate and skin conductance. Combined with the body signals we investigate the possibility of using System Dynamics models to interpret the current psychological states of the human team members, thus enhancing the human-awareness of a robot. / Användningen av autonoma robotar i vårt samhälle ökar varje dag och en robot ses inte längre som ett verktyg utan som en gruppmedlem. Robotarna arbetar nu sida vid sida med oss och ger oss stöd under farliga arbeten där människor annars är utsatta för risker. Denna utveckling har i sin tur ökat behovet av robotar med mer människo-medvetenhet. Därför är målet med detta examensarbete att bidra till en stärkt människo-medvetenhet hos robotar. Specifikt undersöker vi möjligheterna att utrusta autonoma robotar med förmågan att bedöma och upptäcka olika beteenden hos mänskliga lag. Denna förmåga skulle till exempel kunna användas i robotens resonemang och planering för att ta beslut och i sin tur förbättra samarbetet mellan människa och robot. Vi föreslår att förbättra befintliga aktivitetsidentifierare genom att tillföra förmågan att tolka immateriella beteenden hos människan, såsom stress, motivation och fokus. Att kunna urskilja lagaktiviteter inom ett mänskligt lag är grundläggande för en robot som ska vara till stöd för laget. Dolda markovmodeller har tidigare visat sig vara mycket effektiva för just aktivitetsidentifiering och har därför använts i detta arbete. För att en robot ska kunna ha möjlighet att ge ett effektivt stöd till ett mänskligtlag måste den inte bara ta hänsyn till rumsliga parametrar hos lagmedlemmarna utan även de psykologiska. För att tyda psykologiska parametrar hos människor förespråkar denna masteravhandling utnyttjandet av mänskliga kroppssignaler. Signaler så som hjärtfrekvens och hudkonduktans. Le contexte historique et épistémologique de l’émergence de la génétique des comportements en tant que discipline trouve ses racines dans différentes disciplines biologiques :la génétique, la biologie de l’évolution et la biologie moléculaire. Ces dernières font partie du paradigme néodarwinien moléculaire. De cette origine, elle a hérité deux grands domaines de recherche, la génétique quantitative et la génétique moléculaire. Ils ont chacun des objectifs et des méthodologies différents. Les études concernant l’intelligence, les comportements agressifs, les comportements addictifs et l’orientation sexuelle permettent notamment d’illustrer ces différences. Elles permettent également de faire un état des lieux des recherches menées dans ce domaine parfois hautement polémique. En fait, la génétique des comportements est marquée par deux ères épistémologiques, l’ère génomique qui a débuté dans les années 1980 et l’ère post-génomique, qui comme son nom l’indique, lui succède dès le début des années 2000. Les résultats apportés par l’ensemble de ces recherches imposent une conclusion, les approches théoriques et techniques phares de l’ère génomique sont insuffisantes à rendre compte de la complexité des phénomènes développementaux liés aux comportements. L’ère post-génomique tente donc de combler les faiblesses de l’ère précédente. Ainsi, la biologie développementale revient au premier plan et ce retour est souhaité depuis longtemps par un courant philosophique majeur né dans les années 1990, la Developmental Systems Theory. L’ère post-génomique est également caractérisée par un pluralisme pragmatique, à la fois théorique et expérimental. La nécessité de multiplier les modes d’appréhension des comportements s’impose car leur complexité intrinsèque est reconnue et tend à être assumée. Les résultats plus récents apportés par les recherches sur l’intelligence, les comportements agressifs, addictifs et l’orientation sexuelle illustrent cette évolution épistémologique. L’opposition entre inné et acquis échoue à rendre compte de la complexité et du dynamisme développemental des phénotypes comportementaux./ The historical and epistemological context of the birth of behavioral genetics as a discipline has its roots in different biological domains: genetics, evolutionary biology and molecular biology. They are parts of the molecular neo-Darwinian paradigm. From this multiple outset, behavioral genetics has inherited two major areas of research, quantitative genetics and molecular genetics. They each have different purposes and methodologies. The study of researches on IQ, aggressive behaviors, addictive behaviors and sexual orientation illustrate these differences. It also permits to make an overview of results provided in this field that is sometimes highly controversial. In fact, behavioral genetics is marked by two epistemological eras, the genomic era that began in the 1980s and the postgenomic era that began by the early 2000s. The results provided by all these researches lead to one conclusion, the theoretical and technical approaches of the genomic era is insufficient to show the complexity of developmental phenomena associated with behaviors. The postgenomic era attempts to correct the weaknesses of the previous era. Thus, developmental biology comes back in the foreground and the necessity of this return has been defended by a major philosophical theory born in 1990, the Developmental Systems Theory. The postgenomic era is also characterized by a theoretical and experimental pragmatic pluralism. The complexity of the developmental patterns of behaviors is recognized and tends to be assumed. The latest results produce by researches on IQ, aggressive behaviors, addiction and sexual orientation illustrate these epistemological changes. Cette thèse considère l'apprentissage de motifs récurrents dans la perception multimodale. Elle s'attache à développer des modèles robotiques de ces facultés telles qu'observées chez l'enfant, et elle s'inscrit en cela dans le domaine de la robotique développementale.Elle s'articule plus précisément autour de deux thèmes principaux qui sont d'une part la capacité d'enfants ou de robots à imiter et à comprendre le comportement d'humains, et d'autre part l'acquisition du langage. A leur intersection, nous examinons la question de la découverte par un agent en développement d'un répertoire de motifs primitifs dans son flux perceptuel. Nous spécifions ce problème et établissons son lien avec ceux de l'indétermination de la traduction décrit par Quine et de la séparation aveugle de source tels qu'étudiés en acoustique.Nous en étudions successivement quatre sous-problèmes et formulons une définition expérimentale de chacun. Des modèles d'agents résolvant ces problèmes sont également décrits et testés. Ils s'appuient particulièrement sur des techniques dites de sacs de mots, de factorisation de matrices et d'apprentissage par renforcement inverse. Nous approfondissons séparément les trois problèmes de l'apprentissage de sons élémentaires tels les phonèmes ou les mots, de mouvements basiques de danse et d'objectifs primaires composant des tâches motrices complexes. Pour finir nous étudions le problème de l'apprentissage d'éléments primitifs multimodaux, ce qui revient à résoudre simultanément plusieurs des problèmes précédents. Nous expliquons notamment en quoi cela fournit un modèle de l'ancrage de mots acoustiques / This thesis focuses on learning recurring patterns in multimodal perception. For that purpose it develops cognitive systems that model the mechanisms providing such capabilities to infants; a methodology that fits into thefield of developmental robotics.More precisely, this thesis revolves around two main topics that are, on the one hand the ability of infants or robots to imitate and understand human behaviors, and on the other the acquisition of language. At the crossing of these topics, we study the question of the how a developmental cognitive agent can discover a dictionary of primitive patterns from its multimodal perceptual flow. We specify this problem and formulate its links with Quine's indetermination of translation and blind source separation, as studied in acoustics.We sequentially study four sub-problems and provide an experimental formulation of each of them. We then describe and test computational models of agents solving these problems. They are particularly based on bag-of-words techniques, matrix factorization algorithms, and inverse reinforcement learning approaches. We first go in depth into the three separate problems of learning primitive sounds, such as phonemes or words, learning primitive dance motions, and learning primitive objective that compose complex tasks. Finally we study the problem of learning multimodal primitive patterns, which corresponds to solve simultaneously several of the aforementioned problems. We also details how the last problems models acoustic words grounding.

Barriers and bridges: interdisciplinary collaboration in addiction and mental health careMitchell, Amber Risha Turner 19 December 2009 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to explore the factors that enhance collaboration in the interdisciplinary environment of front-line addiction and mental health care. This research will explore these factors by posing the question, What do mental health and addiction professionals report as determining the success of an Inter-Disciplinary Collaborative environment? Using McCracken‘s Long Interview (1988) and principles drawn from Flanagan‘s Critical Incident Technique (1954) the participants discuss their experiences with collaboration in the interdisciplinary environment of integrated addiction and mental health care. The findings are presented according to three overarching themes: 1) Interpersonal and Group Relations, 2) Organizational Supports, and 3) Challenges / Sources of Conflict. Finally, a dispute resolution perspective is taken in order to discuss the findings according to implications for practice, dispute resolution, and leadership and policy.
