Autism spectrum disorder in kindergarten and transitional kindergarten: Teachers' self-perceived ability to meet the needs of students transitioning from early intervention behavior therapy programs

Conklin, Shane P. 01 January 2016 (has links)
This qualitative multiple case study addresses kindergarten teachers’ and transitional kindergarten teachers’ self-perceived abilities to meet the needs of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who participate in early intervention behavior therapy (EIBT) programs. Systems thinking was used to examine the participants’ interactions with the school site-based and EIBT-based support systems within which they were expected to operate. Personal interviews conducted at three intervals during the first five months of the 2015-16 school year rendered three emergent themes: participants initially reported feeling more confident meeting the academic versus the social/behavioral needs of their EIBT students, but that position reversed for two participants during the course of the study; participants reported in-class support aides provided by EIBT agencies were superior to aides provided by their school districts, and; participants preferred having a single ‘go-to’ support person at their school site to having a robust, wide-ranging support system. Contains recommendations for establishing subsystems that foster inner- and intra-support system communication and raising ASD awareness.

A Phenomenological Study of Contributing Factors and Common Trends Related to Teacher Attrition in Western North Carolina

Clarke, Preston 01 August 2022 (has links)
A phenomenological approach was used to identify contributing factors and common trends related teacher attrition by conducting interviews with teachers who decided to exit a North Carolina School District located in Western North Carolina. A qualitative approach allowed the researcher to gain valuable insight into the decision-making process of the 15 research participants. Data collection involved conducting one on one telephone interviews with participants by asking a series of open-ended questions that allowed for probing and follow-up questions. Analysis of researcher notes, evaluation of textual data produced by interviews, and observations allowed the qualitative investigator to identify emerging themes and patterns to answer the research questions. Family, spouse, job opportunity, money, and relocation were identified as contributing factors in the decision-making process of research participants to leave the North Carolina School district. Suggestions for future research include researchers working with school districts to develop an exit interview in the form of a quantitative research design to identify emerging themes and patterns related to teacher attrition. This will allow for the quick collection of data, and researchers will be able to conduct statistical analysis in a timely manner.

Création d’un micromonde visant à favoriser la conscience phonémique et l’autonomie des apprenants de maternelle

Brunet, Mélissa 12 1900 (has links)
A phonemic awareness microworld for six years old or less learners was developed in this research to verify if this type of discovery learning software can be use in a new field: linguistic. Four experts have confirmed that the specifications of the software seem to create something needed in the field. Therefore the creation of the software was continued by alternating programming and observing learner’s reactions when they used the prototype. It was found that learners were curious and excited to explore the microworld and were autonomous when performing several phonemic awareness tasks via its interface. In addition, it was observed that learners had no difficulty being attentive for thirty minutes, that they were more concentrated in the morning, and that they mastered the use of the touch function more than the use of the mouse. Supportive interventions that provided moral support have been essential to keep learners motivated. Indeed, when the interface was not intuitive enough, learners became discouraged after several unsuccessful attempts. It is impossible to generalise the results of this research as it was carried out on a small sample of convenience. Also, the presence of a learning progression was not verified. As such several aspects remain to be explored before we can affirm that microworlds are tools adapted to linguistics.

The diploma thesis deals with the possibilities of early identification of a child's endangering in kindergarten, defining and explaining the concepts of primary prevention, endangered child, social exclusion. Furthermore, the work deals with the threat to the child due to social exclusion and in the end suggests how to address this issue. The main research goal of the work is to verify the functionality of the created detection tool for kindergarten teachers. The created detection tool provides kindergarten teachers with assistance in evaluating the child and his situation so that any problems can be detected in time. Areas that the detection tool deals with and how it has been evolved are described here. It also suggests possible procedures for solving problems based on the cooperation of the kindergarten teacher with a special pedagogue. With regard to the issue of social exclusion and early identification of child threats, the diploma thesis describes examples of good practice in preventing child threats from abroad and discussions about the possibilities of their implementation in our system. The research part of the diploma thesis is based on qualitative and quantitative methods, especially interviews and questionnaire surveys, and aims to verify the functionality of the created detection...
