Child-Directed Play and Teacher Education Related to Preschool Suspension and Expulsion

Scienza, Nicole 01 January 2019 (has links)
The amount of time that children spend in child-directed activity can increase the frequency and quality of teacher–child interactions, which can decrease challenging behavior in children. The problem is that preschool children are being expelled and suspended at a high rate, and additional research is required to examine the prevention of behaviors that lead to expulsion and suspension. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine whether the percentage of the day that children spend in child-directed learning stations, the quality of activities offered during child-initiated time, and the education level of the lead teacher predict classroom suspensions or expulsions. The theoretical framework for the research involved Piaget’s child development theory and Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development. A quantitative method was used to examine the predictive relationship between the percentage of the day spent in child-initiated learning activities, the quality of the child-initiated activities offered, and the teacher qualifications in a classroom and the number of expulsions and suspensions in a child care program. A sample of 39 preschool classrooms licensed by the Office of Children and Family Services were selected for inclusion. A significant correlation between suspensions and expulsions indicated that the more programs suspend students, the more likely they were to expel students. A stepwise regression indicated that neither of the 2 independent variables was found to be a statistically significant predictor in the models for either suspension or expulsion. Further research is recommended with a larger sample. This study may lead to positive social change by informing stakeholders on ways to prevent challenging behaviors and informing future research on this topic.

Involve Me! Using Developmentally Appropriate Practices to Support a Rigorous Kindergarten Program: The Effects on Engagement and Attitude

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: Chi and Wylie’s (2014) Interactive Constructive Active Passive Framework (ICAP) was used as the foundation of a teacher led intervention using small group instruction with manipulatives during mathematics instruction to provide developmentally appropriate instruction to kindergarten students in a rigorous academic program. This action research mixed-methods study was conducted in a full-day self-contained kindergarten classroom to ascertain the effects of this mathematics instruction method on students’ levels of engagement and attitudes. Over the course of six months, twenty mathematics lessons were recorded to gather data for the study. Quantitative data included measuring time-on-task, teacher behaviors ICAP level, student behaviors ICAP level, as well as a Student Attitude Survey that was conducted at the conclusion of the study. The Student Attitude Survey was presented in a modified Likert Scale format due to the age and reading ability of the participants. Qualitative data was gathered in the form of lesson transcripts. Twenty-two students and one classroom teacher participated in the study. Students ranged in age from five to six years old, and eleven participants (50%) were male. The results of the study showed that the use of small group hands-on instruction in mathematics had a positive effect on student engagement based on students’ time-on-task during the activity, as well as positive student attitudes toward mathematics as indicated on the Student Attitude Survey. Lesson transcripts and both teacher and student ICAP rubrics provided further support for the innovation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Leadership and Innovation 2019

Representationsformers påverkan på elevers lärande av grundläggande taluppfattning : En kvalitativ systematisk litteraturstudie om hur valet av representationsformer kan påverka elevers lärande av grundläggande taluppfattning / Multiple representations of basic number sense and their impact on students learning process : A qualitative and systematic literary study of how the choice of representations may influence students learning of basic number sense

Nilsson, Elin, Wallin, Mickaela January 2019 (has links)

Efekti programa razvojne gimnastike na razvoj motoričkih veština i sposobnosti i morfoloških karakteristika dece predškolskog uzrasta / Effects of developmental gymnastics programs exercise on development of motor skills and abilities and morphological characteristics of preschool children

Radanović Danilo 11 June 2018 (has links)

Cilj ovog istraživanja bilo je ispitivanje efekata programa razvojne gimnastike na motoričke veštine, motoričke sposobnosti i morfološke karakteristike dece predškolskog uzrasta. Uzorak ispitanika činilo je ukupno 220 dece (140 dečaka i 80 devojčica), uzrasta 4 - 7 godina (AS = 5,19 ± 0,90 decimalnih godina). Eksperimentalnu grupu činilo je 99 dece (76 dečaka i 23 devojčice; AS = 5,42 ± 0,82 decimalnih godina) uključenih u program razvojne gimnastike u sportskoj školici.
/
The aim of this research was to examine the effects of developmental gymnastics programmed exercise on motor skills, motor abilities and morphological characteristics of pre-school age children. The sample consisted of 220 children (140 boys and 80 girls), 4 - 7 age old (AS = 5.19 ± 0.90 decimal ages). There were 99 children (76 boys and 24 girls; AS = 5.42 ± 0.82 decimal ages) in the experimental group, which was involved in programmed exercise of developmental gymnastics in sports school. Control group consisted of 121 children (64 boys and 57 girls; AS = 4.99 ± 0.91 decimal ages) from the Preschool Institution „Radosno detinjstvo“. The control group was not involved in the programmed exercise treatment. The sample of measurements and tests for assessment of anthropological dimensions of the examinees was divided into three sub-dimensions: motor skills (TGMD-2 battery), motor abilities (motor ability tests and KTK battery) and anthropometric measurements (body dimensionality, body volume, body mass and subcutaneous fat tissue). The results implicate the larger improvement of the experimental group in the majority of the motor skills and motor abilities tests compared to control group. The experimental treatment used during the period of 9 months enabled children of the experimental group to reach higher levels of mentioned skills and abilities, but also had a positive influence on certain morphological characteristics, for example the reduction of body fat.
