Analyse contextualisée de l'expérimentation d'une approche didactique canadienne implantée en contexte universitaire chinois pour l'enseignement du français / Contextualized analysis of the experimentation of a Canadian didactic approach imported to a Chinese university for teaching French

Mao, Rongkun 10 January 2017 (has links)
The background of this doctoral dissertation is the historical development of French language teaching in China, especially at higher education level from the year 2000. Following an ethno-socio-linguistics perspective, this research offers a detailed analysis of a French department in a Chinese university where French language is taught as a major to bachelor-level students (benke). By using a Canadian language teaching approach called NLA, this department has chosen a different way to teach French compared to what can be observed in other Chinese universities. To do so, a great amount of work has been undertaken to contextualize this approach and make both teachers and students more familiar with it. However, despite a large amount of time, energy and effort to make this “contextualization” a success, students do not seem to be convinced this approach is suitable for them, which is, finally, quite disappointing for the actors involved. In addition, largely concerned with the risk of failure at the national exams, they have developed, in parallel, their own method of self-studying, applying principles which are opposed to NLA’s basic theoretical principles. Among teachers, disagreements (at different levels and to different extents), and sometimes conflicts (open or not), have also been observed. Considering that the results of these students on National exams are not satisfactory (depending on the years, at or slightly above or below the national average), those who pushed for the reform at the beginning, especially the leaders, now find themselves in an embarrassing situation. On the other hand, the experiment of NLA has drawn attention from outside the university: several French experts or teachers from other universities show great interest in this approach. Divergent positions, visions, discourses, and actions have brought out the conclusion that in terms of foreign languages teaching, problems are not only related to "language" or" culture", neither to teaching methods or materials. In conclusion, "contextualizing" a teaching method should not be limited to trying to be immersed in local educational culture, or to modifying the teaching methods while changing certain contents.Contextualized analysis of the experimentation of a Canadian didactic approach imported to a Chinese university for teaching French.

Tvorba výukových materiálů s multimediální podporou se zaměřením pro výuku jazyků / The creation of materials with multimedia support focusing on teaching of languages

LIŠKA, Pavel January 2010 (has links)
The thesis called ?The Creation of Materials with Multimedia Support Focusing on Teaching of Languages? deals with creation of educational materials which take advantages of available technical support (software, an interactive whiteboard, a personal computer, a projector, storage media etc.). It was necessary to find out and examine the created block of free educational materials from the internet to solve the submission of the thesis; on the basis of gained information to create the new educational block of materials which will be corresponding with the educational framework at the primary school and also with using of a cross curricular approach. The next aim of the thesis is also creating the methodology of the digital portfolio, which could be used by pupils during their studies on the storage media not only at the primary school. The expected utility was checked up in terms of university practice and also through the cooperation with primary school teachers. The benefit of the thesis should be the usable set of materials on the attached CD with the methodology for primary school teachers.

Problems of English teaching in Sri Lanka : how they affect teaching efficacy

Aloysius, Mahan January 2015 (has links)
Concerned to comprehend the teaching efficacy of English teachers in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, this thesis investigated contentions by principals, retired teachers and resource personnel that Sri Lankan teachers’ lack of teaching effectiveness (teaching behaviours that influence student learning) accounted for students’ low English attainment; and counter claims by English teachers that their teaching efficacy (beliefs in their abilities to affect student learning) was undermined by classroom and other-related problems. This mixed-method research comprised two stages. In a preliminary study, 298 students and twenty-four teachers from twelve secondary schools participated in a survey designed to understand challenges encountered in the teaching and learning of English. With a similar purpose, thirty-four English lessons involving 320 students and ten teachers were observed. Interviews concerning the aspects underpinning effective English teaching were conducted with five principals, three English resource personnel and three retired teachers. In the main study, sixty-two teachers from thirty-five secondary schools were surveyed and twenty interviewed to identify factors which affected the teaching efficacy of English teachers. Participating schools were categorized vis-à-vis their students’ performance: low-performing and high-performing. Findings support English teachers’ views concerning their teaching efficacy. Teacher perception revealed associations between the lack of teaching efficacy of English teachers in low and high-performing schools, and teacher background/parental duties/self-development, classroom problems and inadequate educational resources. No explicit evidence was found that students’ poor English attainment in low-performing schools was due to their teachers’ lack of teaching effectiveness. Observations showed that students were deprived of external resources which assisted students in high-performing schools to become proficient in English. New insights about Jaffna teachers’ efficacy indicate the need for a more context-specific English language curriculum in Sri Lanka, informed by teachers’ knowledge of their students’ English learning needs at a local level if teaching efficacy and English attainment are to be enhanced.

Much has been problematized about the challenges of teaching Portuguese, especially those aspects related to the written production of students, because the written form of the language is extremely important for life in society. The theoretical contributions in this research are centered on the following authors Antunes (2010), Koch (2002), Koch and Elias (2012) and Marcuschi (2004), (2007), (2008), (2010) and (2011) with a foundation in textual linguistics. In order to problematize the transformations caused by the technological evolution, with a focus on the development of the Internet, we rely on researchers interested in the digital language, are in the theoretical role Araújo and Biasi Rodrigues (2005), Araújo (2016), Caiado (2004), Galli (2010), Leffa (2012), (2016), Levy (1993), (1999) and Xavier (2011), since writing produced in digital spaces has its own characteristics with which most students are in contact and daily use. Through this reality, this research aimed to compare the linguistic marks in texts produced in the classroom of the ninth grade of elementary school with those identified in their digital writing, specifically in WhatsApp conversations, observing possible transposition of marks and strategies used in the production of messages in this application for school text production. In order to carry out the research, the written production of the students of a ninth grade class and the messages of WhatsApp, their preference in the Internet, was chosen as corpus and a group was created, an interaction and motivation of the students was established. students, which qualified our research as netnographic research. Thus, it was proposed to write opinion texts on the same subject in the two forms of writing, school text (formal writing) and digital writing (WhatsApp message) and proceeded to the analysis according to the propositions of Koch and Elias (2012) and Antunes (2010), mainly observing orality marks, relations established in texts and messages, obedience to orthographic conventions, use of other graphic notations. The results confirmed what was already the theoretical reference: first: the mother tongue is totally sure about its structure; secondly, that young people develop strategies such as brevity and informality of such order that, without a qualified teaching, this practice may distract students more and more from writing conventions, and finally that WhatsApp messages are meaningful materials and the proper use of them may contribute to the improvement of formal writing. These results stimulated the conception of a didactic proposal that emerges as the fruit of our reflections and becomes a contribution to the use of digital messages as a pedagogical resource to be used in the teaching of writing and is organized in a pedagogical booklet containing suggestions of activities and the step -to-step of a didactic sequence.

Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Educa??o, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2017. / The present study aims to investigate the grammar conceptions subjacent the process of initial formation of Portuguese Language Teachers in the Portuguese/English and the Portuguese/Spanish courses of the Federal University of the Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri. We propose to investigate this question because the teaching of grammar in Basic Education, as a curricular content, is still based on Perini (2014), from the normative perspective, being reduced the learning of the standard language in order to disregard the facts of the language. In order to understand why the teaching of Portuguese language is still based on normative conception, we propose the observation of this problem during the teacher formation process, since the practice may be a reflection of this process. Therefore, we support the definition of the term grammar as a "set of rules" that discriminate the functioning of the language (POSSENTI, 1996, ANTUNES, 2003), which is associated with three different conceptions of grammar: normative, descriptive and internalized (POSSENTI, 1996; TRAVAGLIA, 2009). This research is characterized as a qualitative multiple base case study (YIN, 2005), with the application of vertical and mixed questionnaires to the following subjects: five linguistic teachers from the UFVJM Portuguese courses and five teachers trained in this University that entered the courses of Portuguese in the year of 2012. In addition, we also perform an analysis of the Pedagogical Projects of the UFVJM Portuguese courses to understand the existing assumptions of grammar teaching. For the analysis of the collected data we adopted the technique of the content analysis of Bardin (2011). As the main result of the process of analysis and interpretation of data, we can infer that the conception of grammar underlying the process of formation in the courses of Portuguese of UFVJM is predominantly normative. For this reason, we hope that data presented in this research can contribute to a reflection on the importance of knowledge of grammar conceptions in the initial formation process of Portuguese Language Teachers, so that the teaching practices of the teacher formed are not limited to the Learning of a single variant of the language.

HISTORICAL AND CURRENT PERSPECTIVES ON SPECIALIZED ENGLISH MAJOR PROGRAM IN VIETNAM: A CASE STUDY

Vu, Phu Hoang 01 December 2010 (has links)
This study examined issues related to the development of English as a major for gifted students in Vietnam and current and former students' perceptions of the program. The data were collected through an online survey and analyzed through descriptive statistics in order to identify patterns of agreement and disagreement between two groups of 60 current and 30 former gifted students. The results showed that the majority of the participants came from well-educated families and that family influences and traditions had a great impact on their choice of the program. The major reasons for the program selection were identified as its high prestige and students' interest in learning English as a tool for career advancement. Based on current and former students' evaluations, their initial expectations were met as the majority of them expressed satisfaction with the quality of the English education at the school and appreciated its usefulness for their further study and career. The only area of slight dissatisfaction concerned the lack of opportunities to acquire native like pronunciation. The findings were interpreted in view of their implications for the maintenance and further development of the specialized English major program in Vietnam.

Teaching english as a foreign language : bridging the gap in online distance teacher training

Govender, Angela 03 1900 (has links)
The evolution of computer networks and the Internet has transformed the world. Digital communication technologies offer exciting options and new challenges for Open and Distance Learning (ODL). This dissertation presents a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) training pilot* in order to investigate and critique the use of Learning Management Systems distance-driven teacher development programmes. Globally, English language learning is in high demand. Conventional contact training is unable to reach sufficient numbers of aspirant teachers to ensure quality and to promote access. The study uses design-based research as a means of unravelling the complex relationships between theory, best practice, and implementation in both ODL and TEFL. It concludes by recommending foundational institutional changes as the most appropriate means to effective distance and computer-assisted education. / English Studies / (M.A. (English))

Teaching of academic subjects in English and the challenges Kuwaiti students face

Alazemi, Abdullah January 2017 (has links)
This thesis explores students’ views concerning the current English as medium of instruction (EMI) policy at Kuwait’s two public higher education institutions, Kuwait University (KU) and the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET). In line with the exploratory nature of this study, an interpretivist and social constructivist epistemological stance was implemented to elicit and analyse students’ views and gain their insights on the current situation. The study employed a sequential mixed method design using quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (focus groups, semi-structured interviews and semi-structured observations) methods to present a holistic picture. The number of the participants were 12 for the focus groups, 100 for the questionnaire, 11 for the in-depth interviews and 10 teaching sessions were observed. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the quantitative strand data and thematic analysis was used for the qualitative data. The study revealed that although most participants preferred to learn through English, the current EMI policy raised many concerns. These related to students having to endure an ‘extra burden’ and the additional effort needed to study a subject being taught in a language that was not their mother tongue. The students expressed the view that this resulted in them being unable to gain a deep knowledge of the subject and not attain high grades which then affected their career prospects. These issues arose due to the students not being sufficiently competent in the use of English at the high level expected for degree level work. Students also expressed concerns relating to EMI policy effects on Arab identity and on the use of Arabic as a language of science and academia. Students would prefer a policy that promoted the use of both Arabic and English in their courses which would enable them to benefit from developing their understanding of both languages. The thesis concludes by presenting a recommendation to modify the medium of instruction policy such that it incorporates both English and Arabic. These recommendations have implications for policymakers, teachers and students.

No. of bitstreams: 1 4043.pdf: 14570142 bytes, checksum: dcc375f29cce434a27c74e47902511f8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-26 / This research intends to approach the language teaching and learning from an enunciative perspective based on the Theory of Predicative and Enunciative Operations from Antoine Culioli. Our theoretical option is due to the fact we take into consideration the relevance of working with the articulation between grammatical marks and text production/understanding. With the purpose of this achievement, we study the notion of qualification conveyed by different grammatical marks for which this role is traditionally ascribed. It is included, for example, adjectives, adjective locutions and adjective sentences. We are mainly interested in the processes of predication that involves this notion as we aim to show that these processes are evidences for intersubjectivity marks which uphold these productions of meaning. We also propose to demonstrate that this teaching approach for grammatical marks articulated with the semantic and discursive notions is a way to promote the linguistic and cognitive development in students.
