An analytical and experimental study of large strain soil consolidation

Lee, K. January 1979 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with large strain soil consolidation and a large portion of the work is devoted to the theoretical development in modelling this phenomenon. An experimental programme based on a specially designed oedometer is also included. The governing equations are formulated in Chapter 2, where both the material and the space coordinates are considered. In space coordinate the problem is a moving boundary problem, and special numerical techniques for the idealized case of a thin soil layer are developed in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4 the consolidation of a normally consolidated stratum and a dredged fill are considered with a linear soil model, and the consolidation of a deposit undergoing continuous sedimentation is considered in Chapter 5. The material coordinate is used in the analysis which also includes the effect of self weight of soil. These problems are again considered in Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 with a nonlinear soil model. A specially designed oedometer for testing very soft soil is described in Chapter 8, and the experimental results are discussed in Chapter 9. These are compared with the theoretical solutions developed in Chapter 3, and good agreement has been obtained.

[en] MODELING AND NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF RODS / [pt] MODELAGEM E SIMULAÇÃO NUMÉRICA DE ESTRUTURAS UNIDIMENSIONAIS

FERNANDO ALVES ROCHINHA 05 September 2012 (has links)
[en] It is presented a model of the static geometrically non-linear behavior of an elastic rod which considers flexion, torsion, shear and tension. The geometry of the body, in the reference and deformed configurations, is described given the position of the centerline and the geometry of a rigid frame attached to each point of the line. A particular parametrization that avoids the difficulties associated with the use of Euler angles is employed simplifying the numerical treatment. The equilibrium problem for a nonlinear rod is formulated in several different ways and two numerical methods for solution of these problems are presented. One is based on augmented Lagrangian splitting and the second is a non-standard Newton’s method. Details pertaining to the implementation of that method are discussed. A number of numerical simulations have been documented to demonstrate the robustness of the formulations. In particular, some applications in connection with Off shore pipe lines operations, which involves complicated static loading conditions that includes floaters and gravitational forces, are analysed.

Large Strain and Fracture of Multiple Network Elastomers / Grande déformation et fracture d'élastomères à réseaux multiples

Millereau, Pierre Michel 22 May 2017 (has links)
We investigated systematically the mechanical and fracture properties of multiple network elastomers synthesized by successive swelling/polymerization steps inspired by the molecular architecture of Gong’s double network gels. A more versatile synthesis method was used to vary continuously the isotropic degree of prestretching λ0 of the first network resulting in a wider range of mechanical behaviours, where λ0 controls the Young’s modulus at small strain and the strain hardening at large strain. If the first network is diluted enough (<10%) molecular bond breakage occurs in this prestretched network at high strain while avoiding sample failure. The degree of dilution controls the amount of damage and therefore the slope of the stress-strain curve. Finally, for the most diluted systems (<3%), a yield stress and a necking phenomenon was observed. Changing the degree of crosslinking of the first network or the monomers used led to the same qualitative mechanical behaviour. The fracture energy Γ was shown to be an increasing function of λ0 however different regimes could be distinguished with macroscopic fracture occurring before or after bulk damage was detected. Visualisation techniques such as Digital Image Correlation and embedded mechanoluminescent molecules were used to map a damage zone in front of the crack tip, the size of which increased with λ0. Finally, the toughening mechanism of the multiple network elastomers could be understood in a nearly quantitative way within the framework of Brown's model of fracture of double network gels.

Modélisation ds matériaux caoutchouteux par une nouvelle densité hyperélastique isotrope hybride - Théorie et implémentation éléments finis / Modeling of rubber materials with a new hybrid isotropic hyperelastic density – Theory and finite element implementation

Nguessong Nkenfack, Alain 01 April 2015 (has links)
This thesis concerns the development of a new incompressible isotropic hyperelastic behavior law allowing the modeling of rubber materials with large strain and large displacement. This new law mixes a molecular approach with a phenomenological one and therefore covers a wide range of loading. It has been built by a sum over four terms:– a term related to the interleaving macromolecular chains observed with the crystallization phenomenon. This term is modeled by a logarithmic function coming from the phenomenological energy of Gent-Thomas,– a term related to the assumption of affine deformations observed with the final stiffening of a part of macromolecular elastomeric chains. This term comes from the non Gaussian probability of Langevin. We have modeled it by the 8-chains molecular law of Arruda-Boyce but with an original approximation of the inverse of the Langevin function,– a term related to the stress occurring with non affine strains. This term has been modeled by a Gaussian function adopting an integral form. This is one of the original contribution of this thesis work,– a classical volumetric term taking into account the incompressibility of the material. The two main originalities of the thesis are therefore the introduction of a new approximation of the inverse of the Langevin function and the development of a new hyperelastic energy density which is isotropic, incompressible and hybrid. In order to study the efficiency of the proposed model, comparisons were made with several experimental data available in the literature. These comparisons have been successful and we have implemented our model in the university finite element software FER.

[en] APPLICATION OF A CONTINUATED METHOD OF FINITE ELASTICITY PROBLEMS OF INCOMPRESSIBLE MATERIALS / [pt] APLICAÇÃO DO MÉTODO DE CONTINUAÇÃO A PROBLEMAS DE ELASTICIDADE FINITA DE MATERIAIS INCOMPRESSÍVEIS

EDGAR NOBUO MAMIYA 15 March 2018 (has links)
[en] The application of a continuation method based on the Euler-Chord algorithm to equilibrium problems of incompressible, hyperelastic materials subjected to large deformations is here presented. The mixed strained state-pressure field problem is discretized by means of the finite element method, taking into account the LBB compatibility condition between the involved spaces. The utilization of a strain energy density function diverse from the one presented in the classical literature, is proposed, due to the ill behavior of the Hessian associated with the original formulation.

[en] THREE DIMENSIONAL ELASTOPLASTIC CONTACT ANALYSIS BY LARGE STRAINS / [pt] ANÁLISE ELASTO-PLÁSTICA DO PROBLEMA DE CONTATO COM GRANDES DEFORMAÇÕES EM ESTRUTURAS TRIDIMENSIONAIS

KATRI INGRID IKA FERREIRA 13 November 2001 (has links)
[en] In this theses the frictionless contact problem between two- dimensional or three-dimensional deformable bodies with elasto-plastic behavior under finite strains is studied. The numeric solution procedure is based on an incremental- iterative strategy and includes the treatment of geometric and physical nonlinearities as well as those which arise from contact conditions. In the model of body the finite element method together with an updated Lagrangian and elasto-plastic constitutive relations for finite strains is used. For the solution of the contact problem two methods were investigated. The methods were the Penalty method, where the contact restritions are imposed in an aproximated manner with the use of a penalty parameter and the Linear Complementarity Programming method, which is based on the formulation of a mathematic programming problem for each configuration of equilibrium where the Kuhn-Tucker omplementarity conditions corresponding to the contact conditions are solved by the Lemke pivoting scheme [43]. A algorithm was implemented for consideration for the contact geometry where generic conditions of contact are assumed and the kinematic relation is expressed through a differentiable gap function.Displacement based elements with linear interpolations - hexahedral 8 node elements were employed for the space discretization. In order to diminish the locking effects present in these elements, a hibrid formulation - Enhanced Assumed Strain - EAS, with three aditional internal parameters of deformation with an complete trilinear deformation field was employed.

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis of Three-Roll Planetary Mill Processes

Chang, Ming-Hu 26 July 2001 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the plastic deformation behavior of a round bar at the roll-gap during the rolling process of a three-roll planetary mill. The analysis is carried out with the aid of a finite element program MARC adopting the large deformation - large strain theory and the updated lagrangian formulation (ULF). A mesh rezoning procedure is also adopted to improve the uncontrollable running error of elements turning inside out. The mesh system of the whole bar billet is created by using three-dimensional brick elements, and the three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element model in MARC is chosen to perform the simulations of three-roll planetary rolling processes. The simulation examples consist of three groups. Firstly, three different friction coefficients are adopted to investigate the rolling process. Secondly, totally five different offset angles are used during the simulation of the rolling process. Finally, five different profiles of the roller are used to study the simulation of the rolling process. The successfully obtained numerical results, including equivalent von-Mises stress and plastic strain distributions, rolling force, rolling moment, billet speeds at the entrance and exit planes of the roll-gap are useful in designing the pass schedules of the three-roll planetary rolling processes.

Exploring the Role of Surface-Adsorbing Media in Cutting of Corrosion-Resistant Metals

Jason Marion Davis (9027656) 25 June 2020 (has links)
<p>Tantalum, niobium, stainless steels, and nickel are corrosion-resistant metals that have become critical in many industrial sectors. Due to the demanding environments and temperatures in which they operate, few materials can serve as substitutes. The advantages of these materials are offset by the difficulties in their machining. Belonging to a group of metals and alloys often referred to as ‘gummy’, their poor machinability or gumminess is manifest as thick chip formation, large cutting forces, and poor finish on cut surface. Hence, machining costs can be prohibitive, and applications limited. The gumminess has been attributed broadly to their high strain-hardening capacity.</p> <p>To examine why these metals are difficult to machine, we used direct <i>in situ</i> observations of the cutting process with a high-speed imaging system, complemented by force measurements. The observations showed that chip formation occurred by repeated large-amplitude folding of the material – sinuous flow – with vortex-like components and extensive redundant deformation. The folding was particularly severe in Ta and Nb. Although Ta and Nb displayed a higher rate of fold nucleation than the Ni and stainless steel, the flow dynamics underlying chip formation across the metals was the same – sinuous flow nucleated by a plastic (buckling-type) flow instability on the workpiece surface just ahead of the advancing tool. The large strains and energy dissipation associated with sinuous flow is the reason for the poor machinability of these metals. </p> <p>Prior work with Cu and Al has shown that sinuous flow can be disrupted and replaced by an energetically more favorable (segmented) flow mode, characterized by quasi-periodic fracture, when suitable chemical media are applied to the initial workpiece surface – a mechanochemical effect. The segmented flow is beneficial for machining processes since it involves much smaller forces and plastic strains. It has been hypothesized that the chemical media influence the flow through their adsorption onto the workpiece surface, thereby altering the surface energy and/or surface stress, and effecting a local embrittlement (ductile-to-brittle transition). </p> <p>We demonstrate similar media (mechanochemical) effects and segmented flow development in cutting of the corrosion-resistant metals, with significant benefits for their machining. These benefits include > 35 percent reduction in the cutting force/energy, and an order of magnitude improvement in cut surface quality (finish, tears and residual strain). Importantly, the experiments with the corrosion-resistant metals provide strong evidence that it is indeed adsorption – not corrosion, as in case of hydrogen embrittlement – that underpins the mechanochemical effect. The experiments used chemical agents well-known for their strong adsorption to metal surfaces, namely green corrosion inhibitors (e.g., plant extracts, propolis) and other natural organic molecules (e.g., dyes, antibacterial drugs, cow’s milk). Lastly, the suitability and application of the mechanochemical effect at industrial cutting speeds is explored in turning experiments with these corrosion-resistant metals. Collectively, our observations, measurements, and analysis show that the gumminess of metals in cutting is due to sinuous flow; the gumminess can be eliminated by use of chemical media; and adsorption is the key to engendering the mechanochemical effect. Implications of the results for industrial processes ranging from machining to particle comminution, and for sustainable manufacturing are discussed.</p> <br>

Non-Destructive Evaluation and Mathematical Modeling of Beef Loins Subjected to High Hydrodynamic Pressure Treatment

Lakshmikanth, Anand 15 September 2009 (has links)
High hydrodynamic pressure (HDP) treatment is a novel non-thermal technology that improves tenderness in foods by subjecting foods to underwater shock waves. In this study non-destructive and destructive testing methods, along with two mathematical models were explored to predict biomechanical behavior of beef loins subjected to HDP-treament. The first study involved utilizing ultrasound and imaging techniques to predict textural changes in beef loins subjected to HDP-treatment using Warner-Braztler shear force (WBS) scores and texture profile analysis (TPA) features for correlation. Ultrasound velocity correlated very poorly with the WBS scores and TPA features, whereas the imaging features correlated better with higher r-values. The effect of HDP-treatment variables on WBS and TPA features indicated that amount of charge had no significant effects when compared to location of sample and container size during treatment. Two mathematical models were used to simulate deformational behavior in beef loins. The first study used a rheological based modeling of protein gel as a preliminary study. Results from the first modeling study indicated no viscous interactions in the model and complete deformation failure at pressures exceeding 50 kPa, which was contrary to the real-life process conditions which use pressures in the order of MPa. The second modeling study used a finite element method approach to model elastic behavior. Shock wave was modeled as a non-linear and linear propagating wave. The non-linear model indicated no deformation response, whereas the linear model indicated realistic deformation response assuming transverse isotropy of the model beef loin. The last study correlated small- and large-strain measurements using stress relaxation and elastic coefficients of the stiffness matrix as small-strain measures and results of the study indicated very high correlation between elastic coefficients c11, c22, and c44 with TPA cohesiveness (r > 0.9), and springiness (r > 0.85). Overall results of this study indicated a need for further research in estimating mechanical properties of beef loins in order to understand the dynamics of HDP-treatment process better. / Ph. D.
