[pt] A DOUTRINA DA GRAÇA EM SANTO AGOSTINHO E OS SEUS DESDOBRAMENTOS EM KARL BARTH / [en] DOCTRINE OF GRACE IN SAINT AUGUSTINE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES IN KARL BARTH THOUGHT

ELIARDE GALDINO DOS SANTOS 16 May 2022 (has links)
[en] The present research proposes to make a theological synthesis of the theology of grace in Saint Augustine and the dialectical theology of Karl Barth. And to show that, although the two used Paul s letter to the Romans as a basis to support their respective theologies, they used completely different epistemologies. Our research is intented to show that while St. Augustine made all things depend on Divine Grace, crediting Christ with the merit of everything, Karl Barth over- ontologized the theme of sin. Our research aims to show that, although the two worked too hard on the words sin and redemption, words that gravitate throughout salvation history, the scope of St. Augustine s theology is in grace. Meanwhile, Karl Barth placed more emphasis on the issue of sin and its catastrophic effect, which established a crisis between God and man. Hence the theology of crisis. But also dialectical theology, which takes place through self-giving and self-communication between God and humanity, since the Not-God was overcome from the yes pronounced through the works of Christ.

Rehabilitating Howard M. Parshley: A Socio-Historical Study of the English Translation of Beauvoir's Le deuxième sexe, with Latour and Bourdieu

Bogic, Anna D. January 2009 (has links)
This study documents the problematic translator-publisher relationship in the case of the English translation of Simone de Beauvoir’s Le deuxième sexe. The socio-historical investigation of the case study demonstrates that the 1953 translation was complicated by several factors: the translator’s lack of philosophical knowledge, the editor’s demands to cut and simplify the text, the publisher’s intention to emphasize the book’s scientific cachet, and Beauvoir’s lack of cooperation. The investigation focuses on two aspects: the translator’s subservience and the involvement of multiple actors. Primarily concerned with the interaction between the translator and other actors, this study seeks answers that require investigation into historical documents and the work of other scholars critical of The Second Sex. In this enquiry, more than one hundred letters between the translator, H. M. Parshley, and the publisher, Knopf, are thoroughly analyzed. The study combines Bruno Latour’s and Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological concepts in order to provide a more detailed and encompassing examination within the context of Translation Studies. The letter correspondence is the primary evidence on which the study’s conclusions are based. / Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

[pt] O USO RETÓRICO DAS ALEGORIAS DE GL 4,1–5,1 NO DEBATE PAULINO SOBRE A ESCRAVIDÃO E A LIBERDADE, A PARTIR DAS REGRAS DE HILLEL / [en] THE RHETORICAL USE OF THE ALEGORIES OF GL 4,1– 5,1 IN THE PAULINE DEBATE ON SLAVERY AND FREEDOM, BASED ON HILLEL S RULES

ANTONIO MARCOS DOS SANTOS 05 March 2024 (has links)
This Doctoral Thesis focuses on the rhetorical use of the allegories of Gl 4,1–5,1 as away of understanding the Pauline debate on slavery and freedom, based on Hillel s rules. Starting from the investigation of the semantic and linguistic tools that shaped the interpretation of Scripture in the Jewish context of the first century, it is clear how Paul uses such techniques and teachings from rabbinical schools in his elaboration of Gl 4,1–5,1. In this way, the research aimsto study the biblical text following the academic criteria recognized for analyzes of this character, to understand the elements that guide the theological meaning of Paul s use of diferente paradigmatic figures, centered on the idea of filiation, as an integral part of a great argument rhetorical, as a strategy of dialogue, defense and rescue of the Galatian community, threatened byindividuals who sought to contradict the apostle s preaching.

Moral Formation in the Letter of James: A Way Forward for the Structural analysis in Light of a Systemic Functional Genre Theory

Kim, Ji Hoe 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation attempts to answer two questions. First, what is the social function of the letter of James? Second, how does James design the structure of the text to align with its communicative goal? This study presumes the letter of James as a member of ancient wisdom literature. Contrary to common (mis)understandings, ancient wisdom literature shows a general tendency in its composition. A legitimate sage collects and evokes old sayings and proverbs. Then, the wisdom is reinterpreted and contemporized for the current situation. Through this process, the sage helps his readers develop a sense of right and wrong, develop moral reasoning skills, and cultivate virtues. I will argue that this pattern, moral formation, is present in the unfolding of James’s letter to his diasporic readers. Regarding the structure of the letter of James, after Dibelius, many attempts have been made to present the letter as a cohesive text with a literary structure, which is unified by a single global theme. In this framework, most of what have been proposed as a structure of the letter is more or less topic (or theme)-based. Unfortunately, however, neither a rigorous definition of topic nor a method for determining it has been clearly stated. The limits of the topic-based approach become problematic when applied to the structure of James whereby diverse topics are scattered here and there throughout the text. Attempts to draw intricate lines between these units through topical or thematic similarities make the structure of James very complicated (e.g., inclusio or chiasm). This study attempts to break this methodological impasse by employing Ruqaiya Hasan’s genre theory developed in a systemic functional framework. James’s letter is delimited in terms of function, not topic or theme. In search for the function of each segment, I explore textual (semantic chain and cohesive harmony), ideational (transitivity, verbal aspect, and voice), and interpersonal meanings (grammatical person and speech functions).
