The influence of information and communication technology on the bond grandparents and grandchildren, in the contemporary: a contribution of links psychoanalysis

Beatriz Rall Daró 29 June 2018 (has links)
In addition, it brought several transformations on the subjective, intersubjective, family and social levels, among which we highlight those taking place in the family sphere. The current techno-scientific progress is key in these transformations, from the beginning of television to the recent information and communication technologies (ICTs). Although literature may differ, often the elderly population is seen as precluded by this technological advance and considered digitally excluded. On the same token, we experienced an increase in this population and a rise in life expectancy, leading to changes in the role of grandparents in the family, in a diversity of possibilities. Unlike traditional psychoanalysis, which focused on the dynamics between parents and children, the links psychoanalysis, referential chosen for this work, emphasizes the dynamics involved in the \"between\" dimension, implying a broader understanding about the family. The objective of this research was to investigate whether and how ICT could be influencing the link between grandparents and grandchildren in the current generation, based on the theory of the generational psychic transmission. For this purpose, the clinical-qualitative method was applied and semi-structured interviews were done with eight participants, consisting of four pairs of elderly grandparents and their adolescent grandchildren, both having virtual contact between them; the form of data analysis followed the case study method. The results showed that each pair made a particular use of ICT among themselves, although there have been aspects in common among all or some of them. The inversion of generations and a lack of trust in virtual communication were two constants, as well as the finding that the use of technology was related to certain characteristics of the subjects\' psychic dynamics, the relation between themselves or even the family. In three of the pairs a \"paradoxical effect\" was observed, being caused by the interference of technology, as it would bring the parties closer when they were distant, but set them apart when they were together, due to the excessive use of it by the grandchildren, who then paid less attention to their grandparents. For the interviewed pairs, the presence of technology did not seem to jeopardize the role of grandparents, since they held a very important position for their grandchildren. For some of the latter, the role of the grandparents was still seen as one of knowledge and superiority. In short, it was possible to perceive that in some situations ICT facilitated the bonding process between the pairs, while for others it would prejudice it, and even for some it was only a mere complement. Even so, it was noted that their influence had no more power than the bond in itself, factor sufficient and determinant to dictate the quality of the relationship between the pairs, at least when it comes to grandparents and grandchildren

Do different types of innovation rely on specific kinds of knowledge interactions?

Tödtling, Franz, Lehner, Patrick, Kaufmann, Alexander January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
It is commonly accepted nowadays that innovations are brought forward in an interactive process of knowledge generation and application. The business sector, the science sector, and policy actors are involved in this process as has been stressed in concepts such as innovation systems and the network approach. It is still unclear, however, as to what extent different kinds of innovation rely on specific knowledge sources and links. More advanced innovations on the one hand might draw more on scientific knowledge, generated in universities and research organizations. Such knowledge is often exchanged in personal interactions at a local or regional level. Incremental innovations and the adoption of new technologies, on the other hand, seem to occur often in interaction with partners from the business sector also at higher spatial levels. In this paper we analyze such patterns of knowledge links. After dealing with knowledge interactions from a conceptual view and reviewing the relevant literature, we present an empirical analysis for Austria. The findings show that firms introducing more advanced innovations are relying to a higher extent on R&D and patents, and that they are cooperating more often with universities and research organizations. Firms having introduced less advanced innovations rely more on knowledge links with business services. Furthermore, the employment of researchers was identified as a key factor enhancing knowledge interactions of firms with universities. (authors' abstract) / Series: SRE - Discussion Papers

The proline-rich repeat and thioester domains of streptococcal fibronectin-binding proteins

Kan, Su-Yin January 2014 (has links)
Streptococcus pyogenes is an important human pathogen. One of the most prominent virulence factors produced by S. pyogenes is SfbI, a surface adhesin composed of three domains: thioester domain (TED), proline-rich repeat domain (PRR) and fibronectin-binding repeat domain (FnBD). The structures and functions of TED and PRR and their contributions to the pathogenesis of streptococcal diseases are unknown. The interaction between PRR and its putative target, the intracellular actin cytoskeleton regulator Arp2/3, was investigated by both in vitro and in vivo studies. PRR was shown to inhibit Arp2/3-dependent actin polymerisation. The expression of PRR in HeLa cells caused disruption to the cytoskeleton of the cells. All data point towards a role of PRR in inhibiting the Arp2/3 complex but more evidence is needed to support this. The N-terminal domain of SfbI (TED) and four homologous domains from S. pyogenes, group G streptococci and Streptococcus pneumoniae were characterised by mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy and biochemical assays. All were shown to possess intramolecular thioester bonds, spontaneously formed between sides chains of Cys and Gln residues. Fibrinogen (Fg) was identified as the first binding target of bacterial TEDs with direct evidence that the thioester bond was involved in the interaction with Fg. A pull-down experiment using human plasma showed Fg is a specific binding partner of SfbI-TED. The binding sites were narrowed down to the thioester-forming Gln of SfbI-TED and Lys residues in the Fg-Aα chain, and binding potentially occurred via covalent isopeptide linkage. The data presented here suggest two new roles for SfbI, previously unknown in bacterial pathogenesis. The PRR may be the first bacterial inhibitor of the actin cytoskeleton acting by inhibiting the Arp2/3 complex. Thioester domains appear to be a shared common feature of surface proteins of many Gram-positive pathogens. They may form covalent crosslinks between bacteria and host tissue.

Predição de links em redes complexas utilizando informações de estruturas de comunidades / Link prediction in complex networks using community structure information

Jorge Carlos Valverde Rebaza 27 March 2013 (has links)
Networks are structures in which vertices (nodes) represent entities and links represent relationships between these entities. Moreover, networks are dynamic structures, which implies rapid appearance and disappearance of entities and their relationships. In this scenario, the link prediction problem attempts to predict the future existence of a link between a pair of vertices considering existing information. The link prediction importance is due to the fact of having different applications in areas such as information retrieval, identification of spurious interactions, as well as for understanding mechanisms of network evolution. To address the link prediction problem, many proposals use topological information to assign a value that represents the likelihood of a future connection between a pair of vertices. However, hybrid methods have appeared recently. These methods use additional information such as community information. Communities are groups of vertices densely connected among them and sparsely connected to vertices from other groups, providing useful information to determinate the future behavior of networks. So, this research presents two proposals for link prediction based on communities information. The first proposal consists of a new similarity index that uses information about the communities that the vertices in the neighborhood of a analyzed pair of vertices belong. The second proposal is a set of indices obtained from the reformulation of various existing proposals, however, using only the information from vertices belonging to the same community in the neighborhood of a pair of vertices analyzed. Experiments conducted in ten complex networks of different fields show the proposals outperform traditional approaches

[en] AN ARCHITECTURE FOR RDF DATA SOURCES RECOMMENDATION / [pt] ARQUITETURA PARA RECOMENDAÇÃO DE FONTES DE DADOS RDF

JOSE EDUARDO TALAVERA HERRERA 25 March 2013 (has links)
[en] In the Web publishing process of data it is recommended to link the data from different sources using similar resources that describe a domain in common. However, the growing number of published data sets on the Web have made the data discovery and data selection tasks become increasingly complex. Moreover, the distributed and interconnected nature of the data causes the understanding and analysis to become too prolonged. In this context, this work aims to provide a Web architecture for identifying RDF data sources with the goal of improving the publishing, interconnection, and data exploration processes within the Linked Open Data. Our approach utilizes the MapReduce computing model on top of the cloud computing paradigm. In this manner, we are able to make parallel keyword searches over existing semantic data indexes available on the web. This will allow to identify candidate sources to link the data. Through this approach, it was possible to integrate different semantic web tools and relevant data sources in a search process, and also to relate topics of interest denied by the user. In order to achieve our objectives it was necessary to index and analyze text to improve the search of resources in the Linked Open Data. To show the effectiveness of our approach we developed a case study using a subset of data from a source in the Linked Open Data through its SPARQL endpoint service. The results of our work reveal that the generation and usage of data source s statistics do make a great difference within the search process. These statistics help the user within the choosing individuals process. Furthermore, a specialized keyword extraction process is run for each individual in order to create different search processes using the semantic index. We show the scalability of our RDF recommendation process by sampling several individuals.

On the interaction between transport protocols and link-layer reliability schemes for satellite mobile services / Sur l'interaction entre protocoles de transport et fiabilisation couche liaison pour services mobile satellite

Tauran, Bastien 06 December 2018 (has links)
LEO satellite constellations allow to connect isolated or mobile users to the Internet, when terrestrial solutions are too expensive or impossible to deploy. Using such constellations allow to connect these areas with transmission delays close to terrestrial delays, and then to use the classic transport protocols such as TCP. However, this environment brings new impairments such as variable delays and important error rate between the satellite and the ground receiver. To counteract this high error rate, reliability schemes are introduced on the link between the satellite and the ground user. However, these schemes have a negative impact on the transport protocol (TCP), mitigating the throughput, and which has not been deeply studied yet. In this thesis, we first understand the impact of the reliability schemes on the transport layer, and then propose solutions to improve the efficiency of the transmissions.

Enjeux de pouvoirs et rapports au pays d’origine dans les associations d’immigrés diola en France / Power challenges and links to the country of origin among Diola immigrants associations in France

Bodian, Diata mariame 28 February 2018 (has links)
This thesis deals with the diola migrations and the evolutions of their identities when they meet other groups by moving. The diola immigration, few studied, is considered in this thesis through the unformal associations or the legal associations ruled by the law of 1901 legitimated by French local authorities. These communities are the ideal place to analyze the challenges of power among people who have been ruled by other kinds of power. The links with the country of origin are questioned out of the migratory trajects and the stories, the policies and the didentifications of these immigrants and their descents are also studied. The power challenges and the interactions between the immigrants and their relatives living in the country of origine will be analyzed through the migrations and the bilateral cooperations. The politicla and economic context is an important factor in this research.Key words : migrations, power challenges, Diola, associations, identities

Taut foliations, positive braids, and the L-space conjecture:

Krishna, Siddhi January 2020 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Joshua E. Greene / We construct taut foliations in every closed 3-manifold obtained by r-framed Dehn surgery along a positive 3-braid knot K in S^3, where r < 2g(K)-1 and g(K) denotes the Seifert genus of K. This confirms a prediction of the L--space conjecture. For instance, we produce taut foliations in every non-L-space obtained by surgery along the pretzel knot P(-2,3,7), and indeed along every pretzel knot P(-2,3,q), for q a positive odd integer. This is the first construction of taut foliations for every non-L-space obtained by surgery along an infinite family of hyperbolic L-space knots. We adapt our techniques to construct taut foliations in every closed 3-manifold obtained along r-framed Dehn surgery along a positive 1-bridge braid, and indeed, along any positive braid knot, in S^3, where r < g(K)-1. These are the only examples of theorems producing taut foliations in surgeries along hyperbolic knots where the interval of surgery slopes is in terms of g(K). / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2020. / Submitted to: Boston College.
