Half a World Away: Contemporary Migration from the European Union to Canterbury, New Zealand

Tipples, Rosemary V January 2006 (has links)
As a traditional country of immigration, New Zealand has often looked outside of its borders for its population composition and as a result 19 percent of New Zealand's current population were born overseas. In recent times, immigration has been used by successive governments as a means of countering severe skills shortages and off-setting a declining birth rate. While attention in the media, public and to some extent in academic circles has been largely focused on the increasing volume of immigrants to New Zealand from Asian countries, migration from Europe has often been overlooked and yet it remains an important component of the New Zealand's migration flows. This thesis explores this stream of migration - from the member states of the European Union to New Zealand - by examining the specific case study of contemporary European Union migration to the Canterbury region, incorporating migrants who live, work and study in Canterbury. The thesis used surveys and in-depth interviews in addition to secondary data to investigate the composition of the European Union migrant population in Canterbury, as well as exploring the motivations and experiences of these migrants. Conceptualising the motivations of contemporary migrants from the EU to New Zealand is difficult, due to a multiplicity of theories and frameworks surrounding the topic of migration. As such, this thesis suggests a three level framework drawn from in order to better understand the motivations of target population. Although the experiences of the surveyed migrants were largely positive, some difficulties were noted, particularly while seeking work and building friendships with New Zealanders. Finally, this thesis proposes a number of recommendations at a policy and academic level which may assist in furthering understandings of the important but often ignored group of European Union migrants in New Zealand.

Investigating the relationship between dialogic interaction and written argumentation in A-level history

Hilliard, Diana Marie January 2013 (has links)
There has been considerable research into the teaching and learning of argumentation (e.g. Andrews, 2009; Sadler, 2004), focusing on strategies designed to help students to structure their written arguments. My study, however, focuses on the process of argumentation because I want to help sixth form students, aged 16-19 years old, improve the written argument in their A level History essays. The methodological approach followed was an adapted form of Design-based research, which incorporated an exploratory study, teacher trials and three case studies as part of the iterative design process. A classroom intervention was devised underpinned by design principles based in persuasive argumentation (Kuhn, 2005) and dialogic talk (Wegerif, 2012), derived from an extensive literature review, and the findings of the exploratory study. The exploratory study involved interviews with History education academics and examiners as well as classroom observations and semi-structured interviews conducted in collaboration with the teachers and students of four secondary History departments. Observations were taken of the teacher trials of the prototype intervention, whereas the data gathered from the case studies included pre and post intervention essays, audio and video recordings of the developed intervention in action, post intervention student interviews and questionnaires as well. In Case study 1 and 2, AS and A2 students’ post-intervention causation essays, when measured for argumentation, showed improvement but those whose written arguments improved the most were those students who had engaged in interactions rich in dialogic talk (Wegerif, 2012). The findings from Case study 3, which involved the integration of documentary evidence into AS History essays, were unexpected. Students found the integration of source-based evidence difficult not only during the course of the spoken argumentation but also in their written responses. Further development of the intervention is necessary to help students handle source material effectively in both the spoken and written forms of argument.

[en] SIMULATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF A FREE-SPACE OPTICS IN RIO DE JANEIRO AND RELATIONSHIP WITH ITU-T G.826 / [pt] SIMULAÇÃO E DESENVOLVIMENTO DE UM ENLACE DE FREE-SPACE OPTICS NO RIO DE JANEIRO E A RELAÇÃO COM A ITU-T G.826

JOSE ALBERTO HUANACHIN OSORIO 17 January 2006 (has links)
[en] Very few works had been developed in Brazil, dealing with Free-Space Optics (FSO). In this arrangement, a laser beam carries information for a short range (up to 3-4 km), avoiding the use of optical fiber. FSO is a rapidly-improved solution and very economical, specifically in urban areas. In this work a FSO system operating in Rio is described. This work presents a procedure for the analysis, modeling, and a practical trial of a Free-Space Optics (FSO) system is presented. The procedure has been conducted in the urban area of Rio de Janeiro, in 2002. Firstly, the transmitter and receiver characteristics are considered. Next, three additional parameters are introduced: atmospheric loss, geometric loss and scintillation. In this last parameter, a few ways how scintillation might be expressed in dB and translated into a power balance equation, it presents. Other fixed parameters, dealing with additional losses, are subsequently inserted. The FSO system availability is exhibited, using airports visibility data, leading to a prediction of the systemic availability. Attention is then focused on the Bit Error Rate, BER, which relates with the Recommendation ITU- T G.826. Within this last Recommendation, it shows how to perform a FSO analysis with respect to the climatic variation. The experiment has encompassed some short periods in which this city presents a strong morning fog. It is finally shown that FSO is a competitive and reliable transmission technology, provided proper and correct use.

Transmission multi-standards sur lien optique bas-coût / Multi-standard low-cost optical link transmission

Bouhamri, Zine-Abidine 03 October 2013 (has links)
In this manuscript, we study a complete distributed antenna system through optical ways, to extend radio signals coverage, thanks to the radio over fiber principle. The optical link characterization is done first as the system basic building block. The characterization is done both through component and system analysis, thanks to different radio standards transmission. We develop a new characterization technique that allows us to confirm that the most non-linear element of the optical link behaves much more linearly than expected so that it has a low effect on transmission quality. Chosen standards are both constant and non-constant envelop to highlight the link non-linearities. This shows that non-constant envelop signals are the limiting signals for our system. This also allows to demonstrate that adding a low power constant envelop signal to a non-constant envelop one does not impact its transmission performance. From these experimental results, we develop an in-building coverage distance calculation algorithm for our system. Those simulations confirm that the uplink, from the user to the central station, is the most limiting section of our system because of the noise quantity added by the optical link. To follow this, we propose a new low-cost bus network in-building topology for our system that proves to be performing as wanted for personal homes. Finally, these bus topology simulation results are confirmed with the production of an industrial type test bench. We also produce a passive radio front-end that permits the separation and recombination of several radio signals (GSM and WLAN as previously studied) so that all the elements proving the production and the results of the complete distributed antenna system through optical ways are available and functional.

ABSTRACT: The main propose of this study is to research the field of webometrics, and define its role within Information Science and its relation with traditional metric fields (bibliometrics, scientometrics and informetrics). Also, by applying different webometric indicators to the sites of centers affiliated to the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), this study analyzes the information flows that occur inside the Web. The webometric indicators utilized are: Site Size, Visibility, Luminosity, Web Impact Factor, Link Density and Network Density. The analysis focuses mainly on an examination of links. These are regarded as sources of information and as instruments of connection that influence scholarly relationships within this virtual environment, at the same time being influenced by those relationships. Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Alta Vista, link checking software such as Xenu Link Steuth, and programs for analysis and visualization of large networks such as Ucinet 5 and Netdraw are utilized for data collection, quantification and graphic representation of data. The results obtained indicate that infometrics has to be understood as a large field to include not only bibliometrics and scientometrics, but also emergent fields such as cybermetrics and webometrics. According to this research, webometrics should not be completely absorbed by bibliometrics, because the information in this digital environment cannot be considered as ?recorded.? Instead, this information should be seen as ?available? in electronic support. Therefore, it is necessary to think about a broader theoretical framework that allows us to include the new concepts that come out with the influence of technological innovations on the thinking and the makings of Information Science. The application of webometric indicators demonstrates that Link Density and the Web Impact Factor are insufficient. On the other hand, the other indicators stand out as useful, and are relevant tools to the measurement of data collected in the Web, as well as to the processes of information flows and to the interrelation among scholarly institutions inside the virtual world. This study also demonstrates that most of Latin American social sciences websites establish very few connections with the websites of other centers of the same country or region, which is reflected on a relatively low Network Density and emphasizes the enormous potential of connectivity as an area to be developed in the future by CLACSO and its member centers

This research aims to outline and discuss the contexts in which it operates the Platform P-55, describing the profile of this construction site workers and their extensions. For this, the present study aims to know the general subject ecological worker, male sex, they migrated to the city of Rio Grande in order to work in the edification of Platform P-55, in Naval Pole, where he is expected to portrays how the life of a worker works great (TGOs), as is his workday, which its activities, its goals, how it deals with the distance of loved ones, anyway, that way takes the impacts and changes resulting from their migration, what are your perceptions and as noted before new environment. Major works have attracted the eye of the academy, yet little is known about the environmental impact that these buildings bring to life the very workers / laborers. Thus, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 men who migrated to work in the Rio Grande in Naval Pole, specifically the Platform P-55 that settled in the city. Among the main results, we can verify that workers are migrants from Pernambuco, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro seek employment and better financial conditions. For this experience an intense workday and beyond suffer from the distance of their families. Many think to continue living here if they can continue working and most craves evolve professionally. It is then suggested that workers are aware of their labor rights, which include among others, salary, health and accident, preserving the welfare.

In this dissertation we seek to understand how (cyber)advertising transforms information into language, considering how search engines translate the navigation data into signs in the rhetoric of consumption. Particularly, we aim to verify if the construction of a text made by a search engine can be considered the construction of an advertising text. Our literature review starts from a brief historical review of advertising, focusing on changes in advertisement structuring and techniques. We review the fields of linguistics, anthropology and communication to clarify how search engines operate and how they became propulsive tools for business, vis a vis the multidisciplinary nature of the problem. We also draw on the concepts of Saussure’s Structural Linguistics, the Communication Mathematics Theory and McCracken’s theory of meaning transfer to present the Semiotics of Culture as a convergence of the various concepts of such sciences. In order to conduct a semiotic analysis about the fundamentals of search engines and Search Engine Optimization (SEO), we use the Semiotics of Culture or Russian Semiotics (Tartu-Moscow Semiotics School - TMS), found in Irene Machado and Lotman’s works, and Roman Jacobson’s thoughts on semiotics. By analyzing these two aspects, we investigate the activities of (cyber)advertising to create advertising signs in search engines, assuming links are cultural text signs (in accordance with the TMS), in this work, particularly, cultural hypertexts

The aim of this study was to analyze the emergence, dissemination and popularization of foot-ball in Rio Grande - RS. The methodology used was documental analysis from media sources according to Gil (2006). The chosen journal was Echo do Sul and we settled the study in the period between the years 1900 and 1916. According to the concept of genealogy of Foucault (2012a and 2012b ), the intention was to analyze the historical facts, seeking the conditions that allowed the emergence, dissemination and opularization of this sport. Football comes to the city influenced by European culture and spreads through the journeys made by the clubs, both nearby cities and for the interior of Rio Grande. In this study, we also explored the concept of the infamous (Foucault, 2009). Infamous clubs, in relation to football of Rio rande, are those who have figured a few times between the reports in the journal analyzed. The number of clubs formed in the city reached 47 until 1916, causing an ethnic and sociocultural diversity among the clubs. With respect to the popularization of the sport, there is the incorporation of football in the manufacturing environment. Initially, the games took place inside the clubs, with matches between the first and second team of the club. At the end of the first decade of the twentieth century, beginning the first friendly matches between the clubs. At the end of 1915, was founded Riograndense Football League, which organizes, in the following year, the first city championship, won by Sport Club São Paulo. It was concluded that, in 1916, the football in the city of Rio Grande was no longer a restricted game to the elite of the city, due to a dynamic football that encouraged the emergence and proliferation of football clubs not tied to local elites, already in the late of 1910.
