A questão ambiental atualmente tem gerado grandes discussões sobre energias renováveis sendo que uma das grandes fontes é o sol. Porém, o aproveitamento da sua energia luminosa ainda não tem sido feito em larga escala em países que possuem essa disponibilidade, como é o caso do Brasil. Um dos motivos pode ser a falta de uma maior compreensão de como fazer o dimensionamento da iluminação natural. Este trabalho propõe o desenvolvimento de um sistema de medição desta iluminação natural, através de sensores de baixo custo adaptados para a função de medição, além de um equipamento de medidas e armazenagem de dados, bem um programa computacional que permita a descarga, gravação e interpretação desses dados em um computador. Através deste sistema poderá ser analisada a disponibilidade de luz natural externa, assim como a sua distribuição em espaços construídos simultaneamente. / The environmental issue has now created major discussions on renewable energy, being one of the major sources is the sun. However, the exploitation of its energy light has not yet been done on a large scale in countries that have such availability, such as Brazil. One reason may be the lack of a better understanding of how to make scaling of natural light. This paper proposes the development of a system of measurement of daylight, through low-cost sensors adapted for the task of measuring, and an equipment measures and storage of data, and a software that allows the discharge, recording and interpretation such data in a computer. Through this system could be considered the availability of external daylight, as well as their distribution in space constructed simultaneously.

Advanced measurement for sports surface system behaviour under mechanical and player loading

This research project has investigated the mechanical behaviour of artificial turf surface systems used for sports under a range of real player movements, and the contribution of component layers to the overall system response by developing advanced measurement systems and methods. Artificial turf surface systems are comprised of a number of different materials and commonly with several layers, all of which contribute to their composite behaviour. During sports movements a player loads the surface, resulting in deformation that can change the surface behaviour, which in turn modifies the player biomechanical response. Improving the understanding of surface response to actual player loading is important for developing enhanced products for improving play performance. Likewise, by improving knowledge of surface effects on players, the understanding of injury risk can be improved. However, there is currently no published research to measure and analyse the behaviour of artificial turf system during real player locomotion. This research was undertaken to address this current lack of knowledge within the interaction between player and sports surface regarding the effects of player loading on the mechanical behaviour of artificial turf systems. In addition to support player loading regime, mechanical behaviour of hockey and third generation artificial turf surface systems and their component shockpad layers (a rubber shreds bonded shockpad and a polyurethane foam shockpad) was examined through dynamic cyclic compressive loading using an advanced material testing machine in laboratory environment. Each layer and carpet-shockpad system was subjected to controlled loading designed with previous biomechanical data at various loading frequencies (0.9 Hz, 3.3 Hz and 10 Hz) and under two different contact areas (50 mm and 125 mm diameter) to simulate aspects of player walking, running and sprinting. All layers and surface systems tested showed nonlinear stress-strain behaviour with hysteresis. Increasing the contact area resulted in reduced surface vertical deflection and more linear response. Increasing the loading frequency led to stiffer response in the lower stress range (< 400 kPa) for all surface systems. The third generation artificial turf systems showed also an increase in stiffness at higher stress range ( > 600 kPa) and a decrease in maximum strain as the loading frequency increased. Hysteresis loops obtained at different loading frequencies indicated that the amount of energy lost at the same peak load of 1900 N in each surface system decreased with an increase in loading rate. Player loading regime was performed to quantify the load/stress and the resulting surface deformation/strain under subject loading. Measurement systems including motion capture system, force plate and high speed were developed to characterise the response behaviour in a novel way. The mechanical behaviour of artificial turf surface systems under three player movement patterns (heel-toe walking, forefoot running and forefoot single leg landing) was measured. Boot-surface contact area of each movement varied during the stance. The heel-toe walking results indicated that the maximum applied stress and surface strain occurred in very early stance (first 10%) when the boot-surface contact area was small. For forefoot running and landing, the peak surface strain occurred around mid-stance concurrent with the time of peak applied stress. The maximum strain measured under running was smaller than under landing. A thin-film pressure sensing mat was used in both mechanical and player loading regimes and proved to be a useful tool for evaluating the pressure distributions and contact areas at different interfaces of the surface system. The applied stress on surface was observed to greatly reduce with depth over increasing contact area through the surface systems. Although the average pressure was reduced, pressure distribution contour showed directly under the surface load area the pressure at depth was still relatively large and that outside of this area the pressure was much lower. A comparison of the mechanical behaviour of artificial turf systems in terms of compressive strain, modulus of elasticity, stress distribution and energy loss under mechanical and player loading was evaluated. Key loading parameters in different loading regimes and their influence on surface system response were determined. The structure and material intrinsic properties of shockpad were considered to further explain the observed surface system behaviour. Two mathematical models were used to fit through the experimental data and found to be able to describe the loading behaviour. A breakthrough in understanding of the effects of real player loading on the mechanical behaviour response of artificial turf systems, and the contribution of the components to the whole system response has been achieved through the development of advanced measurement techniques.

Leveraging Software-Defined Radio for a Scalable Wide-band Wireless Channel Measurement System

Wireless channel characterization is important for determining both the requirements for a wireless system and its resulting reliability. Wireless systems are becoming ever more pervasive and thus are expected to operate in increasingly more cluttered environments. While these devices may be fixed in location, the channel is still far from ideal due to multipath. Under such conditions, it is desirable to have a means of taking wireless channel measurements in a low-cost and distributed manner, which is not always possible using typical channel measurement equipment. This thesis leverages a software-defined radio (SDR) platform to perform wideband wireless channel measurements. Specifically, the system can measure the scalar frequency response of a wireless channel in a distributed manner and provides measurements with an average mean-squared error of 0.018 % σ and a median error not exceeding 0.631 dB when compared to measurements taken with a vector network analyzer. This accuracy holds true in a highly multipath environment, with a measurement range of ~40 dB. The system is also capable of scaling to multiple wireless links which will be measured simultaneously (up to three links are demonstrated). After validating the measurement system, a measurement campaign is undertook using the system in a highly multipath environment to demonstrate a possible application of the system.

Bakgrund: Livsmedelsbranschen är tuff för många producenter. Konkurrensen är hård och säljarens ställning är svag. Trenden i branschen rör sig emot att effektivisera företaget, såväl organisatoriskt som operativt. Prestationsmätning är en viktig del vid effektiviseringar men trots detta har få studier genomförts inom livsmedelsindustrin. Syfte: Syftet med studien är att utvärdera Scans prestationsmätningssystem och identifiera faktorer som kan öka jämförbarheten mellan produktionsenheter med olika produktionskontext. Ett bisyfte blir därmed att utveckla förbättringsförslag kring Scans prestationsmätningssystem. Metod: Uppsatsen är en kvalitativ studie bestående av en fallstudie med utvärderingsinriktning kring hur Scan arbetar med sin prestationsmätning. Datainsamlingen har primärt bestått av intervjuer med anställda som är ansvariga och operativt arbetar med prestationsmätningssystemet på produktionsnivå. Intervjuer har genomförts med personer från alla Scans anläggningar och på olika nivåer av företaget. Även årsredovisningar och företagsekonomiska teorier har varit en del av studien. Resultat och slutsatser: Studien visar att drivande styrtal lämpar sig bättre än utfallsmått vid jämförelser av produktionsenheter med olika produktionskontext samt att det är viktigt med en likriktad kommunikation när avdelningar skall jämföras. Studien visar även på flertalet förbättringsmöjligheter med Scans prestationsmätning. / Background: The food industry is tough for many producers. The competition is hard and the sellers position in the supply chain is weak. Trends in the industry mentions a more effective company, both organizational and operative. Performance measurement is a vital part to reach higher efficiency but it has despite that been few research studies on the subject. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate Scans performance measurement system and identify factors which can increase benchmarking between production units with different production contexts. Another purpose is to come up with improvements for Scans performance measurement system. Methodology: This report is a qualitative study consisting of how Scan are working with their performance measurement system. Data collection has primarily consisted of interviews of people that work with the performance measurement system. Also studies in annual reports and business economic theories have been part of the report. Results and conclusions: The study shows that leading indicators is better suited for benchmarking between production units with different production contexts. It is also important that the communication is unified throughout the company.

The efficiency of the container shipping industry and the development of a performance measurement system

Continuous improvement in this industry is of utmost importance in order to grow a country’s economy. One of the objectives of this research study is to determine the inefficiencies that exist within the South African container shipping industry. A lot of these inefficiencies cannot be eliminated by a single organisation, but require the cooperation of all the parties in a supply chain. Currently there is not enough interaction between the organisations in the supply chain apart from limited contact with direct customers and suppliers. The aim of the performance measurement system is to drive organisations throughout the supply chain to focus on the areas that require the most improvement. If inefficiencies are identified, the parties concerned should jointly come up with action plans to address these inefficiencies. This research study will focus mostly on the Cape Town region. The performance measurement system (PMS) developed in this study can be used to improve supply chain efficiency. Existing PMSs were researched in order to develop a system that is applicable to the container industry. Research of the industry was done with the aid of questionnaires, interviews, surveys and a focus group. The benefits of such a system should be carefully explained to representatives of the organisations in the industry to attract their participation. The success of the system is highly dependent on how well the parties in the supply chain participate, as it is only then that the efficiency of a supply chain can be measured. Management representatives were asked to indicate which key performance indicators they are measuring. This information was used as a basis for the study. There are various parties that are currently busy with similar studies, which emphasises the increased need for a supply chain PMS in the container shipping industry. Two case studies were identified that will benefit from a PMS. BMW’s manufacturing plant in Rosslyn and the fruit export industry in the Cape Town region were used as examples of integrated supply chains. The PMS can be easily adapted in order to apply it to other corridors or commodities. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ‘n Doeltreffende houer verskepingsindustrie is iets waarna elke land streef. Konstante verbeterings in die industrie is baie belangrik vir ‘n land se ekonomie. Een van die doelwitte van hierdie navorsingsprojek is om te bepaal wat die ondoeltreffendhede in die houer verskepingsindustrie is. Baie van hierdie ondoeltreffendhede kan nie deur een organisasie opgelos of geïlimineer word nie. Dit moet deur die hele voorsieningsketting gesamentlik gedoen word. Daar is tans te min samewerking tussen organisasies in die voorsieningsketting. In die meeste gevalle werk organisasies slegs met hulle onmiddelike kliënte en verskaffers. ‘n Voorsieningsketting meting-stelsel sal verseker dat daar op die regte aspekte gefokus word. Management Control System for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: A Case Study in Sweden

Background: The number of small and medium-sized enterprises has been increasing and has gradually become the main part of economic development over years. However, it is challenging for them to compete in the fast-changing business environment, especially with the changing demands of their stakeholders. In order to control and improve business processes, Management Control System is important for monitoring each process while Performance Measurement System, as an essential part, is a good way of managing goals and targets and help companies improve. Since the business process is closely related to stakeholders, it is necessary to study how small and medium-sized enterprises manage their stakeholders’ expectations to improve their use of performance measurements and control business processes. Findings: We have selected two small and medium-sized enterprises in Kronoberg County in Sweden for our case study. We have found that our research model based on literature is well explained more in detail in practice. Based on the literature, we identify that key stakeholders for small and medium-sized enterprises are basically primary stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, employees, owners/shareholders and community. Performance Measurement System can be used and developed by managing these stakeholders’ expectations. After collecting empirical data, we have discovered that competitors or other companies have an impact on the use of Performance Measurement System as well. Small and medium-sized enterprises also have several important stakeholders to consider and they try to develop and improve Performance Measurement System by managing their stakeholders’ expectations from different perspectives. Results: It is important for small and medium-sized enterprises to find out what their main stakeholders are first before they can manage their expectations. After identifying key stakeholders, different aspects of these stakeholders need to be considered. For instance, employees’ capability of working need to be measured and they have a big impact on Performance Measurement System use and development, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. Suppliers and customers situations need to be considered since they may come from different regions or countries where there are political issues. Therefore, risks of doing business require enterprises to be flexible and react quickly. Managing these aspects regarding stakeholders is crucial for developing and improving Performance Measurement System in small and mediumsized enterprises.

O tema medição de desempenho vem sendo cada vez mais discutido por acadêmicos e profissionais de todas as áreas. A grande quantidade de publicações sobre o tema indica a existência de problemas nesta área e sua importância para a gestão dos negócios. No Brasil, as empresas da indústria da construção civil também têm manifestado um crescente interesse em melhorar os seus sistemas de medição de desempenho. Entretanto, as características inerentes a este setor tornam o processo de desenvolvimento de um sistema de indicadores uma tarefa relativamente complexa. Percebe-se uma necessidade de melhoria no uso destas informações para a tomada de decisão, através da análise e extração do máximo de valor dos dados. Nesse sentido, um painel de controle fornece a possibilidade de monitoramento dos principais indicadores de desempenho através de uma única interface. Assim, este trabalho de pesquisa propõe um conjunto de diretrizes para concepção e avaliação de painéis de controle visando à melhoria de sistemas de medição de desempenho para a gestão da produção na Construção Civil. A estratégia de pesquisa adotada neste trabalho foi a pesquisa-ação. A pesquisa foi dividida em duas etapas: a etapa preparatória e a etapa principal. Na primeira etapa foi realizado um estudo exploratório e um diagnóstico inicial em duas empresas construtoras, visando a ampliar o conhecimento da autora sobre o tema, permitindo um refinamento do escopo da pesquisa. Ainda na etapa de preparação, foi realizado um estudo sobre o painel de controle em uma empresa fora do setor de construção civil, com o objetivo de analisar um caso bem sucedido da utilização de painéis de controle, fornecendo maior conhecimento prático sobre o tema. Na etapa principal foram realizados estudos paralelos nas duas empresas construtoras analisadas no diagnóstico. As principais contribuições desta pesquisa estão relacionadas a: (a) estabelecer critérios para a avaliação da eficácia dos painéis de controle; (b) propor mecanismos de vinculação entre os diferentes níveis gerenciais envolvidos na análise destes painéis e (c) propor diretrizes para a implementação de painéis de controle. / The issue of performance measurement has been each time more discussed by the academic community and professionals of every area. The large amount of publications about this issue indicates the existence of problems in this field of research and its importance for business management. In Brazil, civil construction enterprises have also demonstrated an increasing interest in improving their performance measurement systems. However, the characteristics of this field make the process of a measurement system development a relatively complex task. It may be seen the need of improvement in the use of the information gotten from these measures for decision making, through the analysis and obtainment of the maximum potential of data. In this sense, dashboard gives the possibility of monitoring the main performance indicators through an only interface. Therefore, this research proposes a set of guidelines for the conception and assessment of dashboards aiming the improvement of performance measurement systems for production management in civil construction industry. The research strategy adopted in this paper was action-research. It was divided in two phases: preparatory and main phase. In the first one, an exploratory study and a diagnostic step were accomplished in construction companies, aiming to broaden the author’s knowledge about the issue, allowing the refinement of the research. Still in the preparatory phase, it was accomplished a study about dashboard in a company outside civil construction sector, with the aim of analyzing a well succeeded case using dashboards. In the main phase, parallel studies were accomplished in the two civil construction companies analyzed during diagnosis. The main contributions of this research are related to: (a) establish criteria to assess the effectiveness of dashboards; (b) propose mechanisms for entailing different management levels involved in the analysis of such dashboards; and (c) propose guidelines for implementing dashboards.

Uma forma eficaz de acompanharem tais desempenhos é por meio da adoção de sistemas de medição de desempenho (SMD). Os SMDs são métodos estruturados utilizados para gerenciarem a implementação de sua estratégia e manterem um monitoramento do resultado das ações tomadas. O objetivo desa pesquisa é identificar, por meio de uma ampla revisão da literatura sobre teoria das restrições (TOC), de que maneira os princípios da TOC complementa, contribui ou influência o arcabouço conceitual clássico de SMDs. Para tanto, foram pesquisadas as principais características de um SMD clássico, compilado nove quesitos dados como essenciais para um SMD, baseado em importantes autores do tema e por fim analisado o grau de aderências dos princípios da TOC aos quesitos de SMD. O trabalho apresenta algumas das práticas mais atuais de gestão de operações sugeridas pela TOC, as quais permitem a construção de vantagens competitivas sobre as quais as empresas devem saber capitalizar para garantir geração de vendas a uma taxa crescente. Baseado nas análises conceituais realizadas nesse trabalho, conclui-se que os princípios da TOC demonstraram-se convergentes quando comparados com os quesitos essências de um SMD aqui propostos / The use of performance measurement systems based on indicators have been growing every day in organizations. The search for competitive advantages in the global market this is the big challenge. Companies have their results checked daily in order to know close are the goal. An effective way to monitor such performance is through the adoption of performance systems (PMS). The PMS are structured methods used to manage the implementation of its strategy and maintain a monitoring result of the actions taken. The objective of this research is to identify, through a comprehensive review of the literature on theory of constraints (TOC), how the principles of TOC complements, contributes or influences the conceptual framework of classical PMS. Thus, was surveyed the main features of a classic PMS, compiled ten items as essential for an PMS based on important authors of the subject and finally analyzed the degree of adherence to the principles of TOC to the questions of PMS. In this work was presented some of the most current practices of operations suggested by the TOC, which allow the construction of competitive adavantages on which companies must capitalize to ensure the generation of sales at an increasing rate. Based on the conceptual analysis performed in this study, was conclude that the principles of TOC demonstrate convergent when compared with the supposed essences of PMS items

Nowadays, many companies are looking for ways to extract useful information from this huge amount of data. This can be attained applying analytical techniques. The application of these techniques to big data is denominated big data analytics. It can influence how managers make their decisions and manage the company businesses. This influences the use of performance measurement systems (PMSs). These systems are composed by a multidimensional set of performance measures that can support decision making and business planning. This way, performance measurement systems and big data analytics can be used to support decision making and the implementation of actions. There is evidence, in the literature, that big data analytics can be used in performance measurement systems. Following this context, this study aims at investigating how companies apply the big data analytics in using performance measurement systems. To achieve this objective, a systematic literature review was carried out for checking existing studies on the relationship between big data and performance measurement system. Then, case study method was applied. The empirical findings showed that big data analytics supports the decision making process, making it more efficient and effective. The results showed that big data analytics helps PMS identify, through analyses, how past actions can influence the future performance. Such analyses are in essence descriptive and predictive and it was applied in sales process. The empirical findings from the case studies showed that big data analytics contributes mainly to the use of PMSs related to planning and to influencing behavior. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that there is a contribution when big data analytics is used in performance measurement system. / Big data está associado a grande quantidade de dados de diferentes tipos, provindos de diversas fontes de forma acelerada, capazes de trazer valor aos negócios e com veracidade. Atualmente, muitas empresas buscam formas de extrair informações úteis deste grande volume de dados. Isso pode ser feito por meio de técnicas analíticas. A aplicação dessas técnicas ao big data é denominada big data analytics que pode influenciar a forma como os gestores tomam as suas decisões e gerenciam os negócios da empresa. Isto pode afetar os sistemas de medição de desempenho (SMDs) que são compostos por um conjunto de medidas de desempenho multidimensionais capaz de apoiar a tomada de decisões e o planejamento dos negócios. Dessa forma, os sistemas de medição de desempenho e o big data analytics podem ser utilizados para apoiar a tomada de decisão e dar suporte à realização das ações. Há evidências, na literatura pesquisada, de que o big data analytics possa ser utilizado nos sistemas de medição de desempenho. Dentro deste contexto, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar como as empresas usam big data analytics nos sistemas de medição de desempenho. Para alcançar o objetivo deste trabalho, primeiramente, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática da literatura para verificar as publicações existentes a respeito da relação entre big data analytics e sistema de medição de desempenho. Em seguida, o método de pesquisa utilizado foi estudo de caso múltiplo de caráter exploratório. As análises dos dados comprovaram que o big data analytics auxilia para que o processo de tomada de decisão seja mais eficiente e efetivo. Os resultados apontaram que o big data analytics auxilia o SMD a identificar como ações passadas podem influenciar o desempenho futuro por meio das análises realizadas. Essas análises são descritivas e preditivas e contribuem nas ações de venda dos produtos. Os dados empíricos provindos dos estudos de caso mostraram que big data analytics contribui principalmente para o uso dos SMDs relacionado ao planejamento e a influenciar o comportamento. Portanto, é possível concluir que existe uma contribuição quando big data analytics é utilizado no sistema de medição de desempenho.
