As viagens de Salles, Solanas e Sarquís: identidade em travessias / The trips of Salles, Solanas and Sarquís: identity in crossings

Silva, Denise Tavares da 25 September 2009 (has links)
This project will analyze four Latin American movies that have in common the fact of being centered in characters that travel around their country of origin (two movies) and South America (two other movies). The objective is to demarcate in these movies, which were built under the need of displacement, relevant information regarding the identity and belonging of a given physical and human geography. The two movies that take place in Latin America are Diários de Motocicleta, directed by the Brazilian Walter Salles and El viaje la aventura de ser joven, from the Argentinean filmmaker Fernando Ezequiel Pino Solanas. The other two movies that focus their narratives on national territory are Central do Brasil also from Walter Salles and Facundo, la sombra del tigre from Argentinean director Nicolás Sarquís. The study addresses the relationship of these works with the political and cultural context in Latin America on the 60s, with focus on Brazil and Argentina, and discusses how these movies also appropriate the road movie style. It also defends the idea that these movies expose and reflect one of the central tensions of post-modernity, which is its coexistence with the cultural universe called solid modernity. This procedure comes mainly from the condition of riding the road and on it reaffirming an identity shaped by values that are, almost always, idealized and nostalgic, forming a set of films that express the persistency of national fixation and pan-continental for Brazil and Argentinas contemporary cinema.

Sentiment analysis : text, pre-processing, reader views and cross domains

Haddi, Emma January 2015 (has links)
Sentiment analysis has emerged as a field that has attracted a significant amount of attention since it has a wide variety of applications that could benefit from its results, such as news analytics, marketing, question answering, knowledge management and so on. This area, however, is still early in its development where urgent improvements are required on many issues, particularly on the performance of sentiment classification. In this thesis, three key challenging issues affecting sentiment classification are outlined and innovative ways of addressing these issues are presented. First, text pre-processing has been found crucial on the sentiment classification performance. Consequently, a combination of several existing preprocessing methods is proposed for the sentiment classification process. Second, text properties of financial news are utilised to build models to predict sentiment. Two different models are proposed, one that uses financial events to predict financial news sentiment, and the other uses a new interesting perspective that considers the opinion reader view, as opposed to the classic approach that examines the opinion holder view. A new method to capture the reader sentiment is suggested. Third, one characteristic of financial news is that it stretches over a number of domains, and it is very challenging to infer sentiment between different domains. Various approaches for cross-domain sentiment analysis have been proposed and critically evaluated.

Engineering enhancements for movie recommender systems

Solanki, Sandeep January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Computing and Information Sciences / Doina Caragea / The evolution of the World Wide Web has resulted in extremely large amounts of information. As a consequence, users are faced with the problem of information overload: they have difficulty in identifying and selecting items of interest to them, such as books, movies, blogs, bookmarks, etc. Recommender systems can be used to address the information over-load problem by suggesting potentially interesting or useful items to users. Many existing recommender systems rely on the collaborative filtering technology. Among other domains, collaborative filtering systems have been widely used in e-commerce and they have proven to be very successful. However, in recent years the number of users and items available in e-commerce has grown tremendously, challenging recommender systems with scalability issues. To address such issues, we use canopy/clustering techniques and Hadoop MapReduce distributed framework to implement user-based and item-based recommender systems. We evaluate our implementations in the context of movie recommendation. Generally, standard rating prediction schemes work by identifying similar users/items. We propose a novel rating prediction scheme, which makes use of dissimilar users/items, in addition to the similar ones, and experimentally show that the new prediction scheme produces better results than the standard prediction scheme. Finally, we engineer two new approaches for clustering-based collaborative filtering that can make use of movie synopsis and user information. Specifically, in the first approach, we perform user-based clustering using movie synopsis, together with user demographic data. In the second approach, we perform item-based clustering using movie synopsis, together with user quotes about movies. Experimental results show that the movie synopsis and user demographic data can be effectively used to improve the rating predictions made by a recommender system. However, user quotes are too vague and do not produce better predictions.

Les tabous et l'autocensure : la sexualité, la violence et le politiquement correct dans les films de Zhang Yimou / Taboos and self-censorship : Sexuality, violence and political correctness in Zhang Yimou's films

Sun, Wei 14 March 2019 (has links)
Taboos and self-censorship : Sexuality, violence and political correctness in Zhang Yimou’s filmsIn a movie, sex, violence, and political correctness are often taboos. These taboos need to be handled with caution. Although the film grading system in Western countries has been established, those legislators still use cessation as an excuse to control the film in order to protect the minors. Moreover, as far as the People’s Republic of China is concerned, as one of the few remaining authoritarian regimes in the 21st century, the Communist regime has absolute arbitrary control over artistic creation. Therefore, these taboos, especially political correctness, are not allowed to touch. The ubiquitous review is often accompanied by the entire process of film production, which involves conception, script-writing, filming, and distribution, prompting the director to constantly self-censorize the film and television creationg process. As the leader of the contemporary Chinese film, Zhang Yimou is almost a legendary symbol, he witnessed the development of Chinese film. And his rich works, both in quantity and diversity, are undoubtedly the perfect research subject. Most of his works are derived from the adaptation of literature to film. The two different expression modes of literature and film, one is the textual expression, and the other is the audiovisual presentation, which forms a sharp contrast. The contrast helps us to study how to present sexuality, violence, and political correctness on the screen, as well as the director’s self-censorship during film-making.Our research focuses on analyzing that how Zhang Yimou is handling of thses taboos in the film-making process, thus avoiding the review of those in power. This paper mainly cuts into three latitudes: Firstly, for the study of film censorship, the study of its history, legal rules and articles. Secondly, the analysis of Zhang Yimou’s TV interviews and the descriptions of his collaborators, and finally a detailed and indepth analysis of Zhang Yimou’s works.

The experience of childhood in “Abril Despedaçado”.152 f. Thesis (Post-Graduate Program in Education) - Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás, 2018. Thesis linked to the Education, Society and Culture Research Line of the Postgraduate Program in Education of the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás (PUC-GO), in the field of studies between Childhood, Literature and Cinema, investigating, in bibliographical character, the childhood. For the study in question, we bring the work Abril Despedaçado, checking the transit between literature and cinema of Ismail Kadaré's work (2007) and in the homonymous work of Walter Salles (2001), emphasizing the childhood represented in the film work. Childhood here is established as inherent in all human beings and is established in/by the language. For this analysis we bring the child, the subject who sees himself capable of saying the unspeakable, which is precisely what language must presuppose in order to be meant. The concept of childhood is accessible only to a thought that has effected that "pure elimination of the unspeakable in language" according to Agamben (2005). Thus, we seek in the Pacu Character words that flee from the world of those who no longer allow themselves to say what goes on in the life of a family marked by death from the ancestral struggle between families by land ownership.

Writing a screenplay : A study in crafting quality stories for movies and television

Stånggren, Mikael January 2007 (has links)
<p>The art and science of crafting superior stories for feature film, television, and computer graphics productions, for both local and international purposes alike, are extremely important. In the artistic sense, this is a glimpse at the key elements in creating successful characters, stories, and environments. In the technical sense, it is a review on how to write a professional screenplay, as well as a comparison between different mediums, methods, and styles of writing. In order to conduct this research and accomplish said goals, material from a variable set of sources, including work by acclaimed authors, as well as professional screenplays and personal experience within the subject was used. The initial hypothesis that was put forth, proved in the end to become the overall result. Although being a field more inclined towards art than science, some of the answer and results came to fall within individual conclusions and opinions, rather than technical facts, as writing is different in style and nature to each and every screenwriter.</p>

Att Måla Känslor Med Musikens Färger : En studie om hur man kan skapa musik för olika typer av känslor / To paint emotions with the colors of music : A study of how it is possible to create music to bring forth different kind of emotions

Carlson, Zebastian January 2012 (has links)
The work is about how music can affect the feelings and fantasies of people listening to it and how music can awaken a specific emotion for the listener. The purpose of the work is to understand why different kind of music can affect people in a certain way, and above all, if it is possible to convey specific emotions to the general listener. The work is made up of the essay itself but also the creation of seven music pieces that 128 subjects have listened to. The music pieces are from different genres: drama, comedy, romance, horror, action, fantasy and finally adventure. The people first got to listen to the music and then try to figure out the right genre to every song. There have also been interviews with nine people, all with a background within the film industry. The reason for this was to get to know how they look at the creation of movie soundtrack. After having examined the subjects’ answers it can be seen that it is possible to convey a specific emotion to a specific song, although not fully succeeded. A lot of the time answers were given that were in line with my own thoughts. In other cases there were a fascinating, almost precise connection to my own thoughts and feelings around the music pieces.

You can’t understand what he did but you try” : Upper secondary school student’s conceptions about Adolph Hitler

Thörnqvist, André January 2008 (has links)
The author of this degree thesis has interviewed students in there first year of the upper secondary school about (among others) how they express conception about Adolph Hitler. The thesis shows that the students are interested in modern history but they have some lack in knowledge in nineteen- and the twentieth century general history. The students connect Hitler with the Holocaust and they had no conceptions that aren’t known in Hitler research. The students wanted to understand “why” the Holocaust happened and why Hitler did what he did and what his beliefs and thoughts was. In general the students had good knowledge about Hitler and they often saw him as intelligent but also as mentally ill. The students often placed too much in there explanations to Hitler’s own person and did idealistic interpretations, but they didn’t see Hitler as a superhuman or a demon. The students also were good at critical thinking, analysis ability and reflection. The thesis also shows that the interviewed students were influenced by media andespecially movies about Hitler, and the schoolbooks were of subordinate importance. The thesis finally concludes that discussion and orientation in school about historical movies is of importance and new ways to teach about the Second World War, Hitler and the Holocaust can be necessary regarding things as education about movie influence and a social psychology way of looking at things as human evil and the Second World War.

The Effect of Marketing Mix Strategy on Consumer Repurchase Intention : A Case Study of Kaohsiung's Movie Theaters

Lee, Tzu-ying 09 August 2011 (has links)
This study aims at movie theaters in Kaohsiung to explore the relationship between marketing mix strategy and repurchase intention. single screen, miniplex, multiplex and megaplex. Our three targeted movie theaters are in the form of multiplex (holding 8 to 15 screens): Vieshow Cinemas in MegaA, Cinemark in Dream Mall and 3.Ambassdor Theatres in E-Da World. The audiences who have tickets to the three movie theaters are the researched samples. This study adopts structured questionnaires and qualitative method to analyze diverse variables. The formal questionnaire includes three sections: marketing mix strategy scale, repurchase intention scale and the consumer¡¦s basic profile. The questionnaires are made with reference to literatures and previous surveys in order to revise to conform to the purpose of the study. For the pilot study, the number of the questionnaires is 100 copies. Then, the number of the samples amounts to 1200 persons by means of convenience sampling. From survey participants, 1012 respondents were collected, and invalid ones were excluded, at the rate of recollection of 84.3%. Two hypotheses are proposed: 1¡GDifferent customers-one variable of population- has significant impact on marketing mix strategy. 2¡GMarketing mix strategy has significant impact on repurchase intention. The statistic tool SPSS17.0 are used for analysis of data and test of hypotheses covering multi analysis in terms of description, reliability, factor, T test, single-factor ANOVA, correlation and regression. The following are the findings: 1¡GDifferent consumers, the variable of population, significantly impact on marketing mix strategy. 2¡GMarketing mix strategy has significant impact on repurchase intention. Our suggestions are made as follows: 1¡GDesign specific network communication for youngsters and adults. 2¡GConvey more advertisement messages on popular networks and papers toward students and employees 3¡GStrengthen the diversity, accessibility and popularity with respect to the contents of network marketing. 4¡GImplement diversified marketing mix strategy for different customers. 5¡GExtend other dimensions (e.g., customer¡¦s satisfaction) for study. 6¡GStudy more movie theaters in different areas (such as Tainan, Taichung, New Taipei City and Taipei) or non-premier theaters by expanding our scales. 7¡GCollaborate and cooperate with the authority.
