Robust Nonparametric Sequential Distributed Spectrum Sensing under EMI and Fading

Sahasranand, K R January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Opportunistic use of unused spectrum could efficiently be carried out using the paradigm of Cognitive Radio (CR). A spectrum remains idle when the primary user (licensee) is not using it. The secondary nodes detect this spectral hole quickly and make use of it for data transmission during this interval and stop transmitting once the primary starts transmitting. Detection of spectral holes by the secondary is called spectrum sensing in the CR scenario. Spectrum Sensing is formulated as a hypothesis testing problem wherein under H0 the spectrum is free and under H1, occupied. The samples will have different probability distributions, P0 and P1, under H0 and H1 respectively. In the first part of the thesis, a new algorithm - entropy test is presented, which performs better than the available algorithms when P0 is known but not P1. This is extended to a distributed setting as well, in which different secondary nodes collect samples independently and send their decisions to a Fusion Centre (FC) over a noisy MAC which then makes the final decision. The asymptotic optimality of the algorithm is also shown. In the second part, the spectrum sensing problem under impediments such as fading, electromagnetic interference and outliers is tackled. Here the detector does not possess full knowledge of either P0 or P1. This is a more general and practically relevant setting. It is found that a recently developed algorithm (which we call random walk test) under suitable modifications works well. The performance of the algorithm theoretically and via simulations is shown. The same algorithm is extended to the distributed setting as above.

Their combination eliminates the need for using pre-defined wired structures and prior configurations. In this work, we develop a simulated version, using the network simulator 3 (ns-3), of the Heterogeneous Technologies Routing (HTR) framework that is suitable for interconnecting devices in a heterogeneous ad hoc network, extending its supported heterogeneous technologies with the addition of WiMAX and LTE devices, proposes an extension to enable multipath routing over this framework and investigates the impact of tuning routing parameters on convergence interval and energy consumption. Although a large number of works exist that investigate the tuning of routing parameter settings, to the best of our knowledge, none of them investigate the impact of these on protocol convergence and energy consumption. Multipath HTR routing, the extension we propose, offers several benefits such as load balancing, fault tolerance, routing loop prevention, energy-conservation, low end-to-end delay, and congestion avoidance, among others. This work performs a comparative analysis of the proposed HTR extension, with the baseline HTR, and the widely used Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol. Moreover, we investigate the impacts of tuning the HELLO refresh interval and perform a comparative analysis of the tuned HTR with the OLSR protocol. Both evaluations are validated through the simulation of heterogeneous technologies such as WiMAX, 3GPP LTE and Wi-Fi. Results show that the multipath extension effectively improves the data delivery ratio, and reduces the end-to-end delay without major impact on network energy consumption. For the tuned HTR, results show that varying the HELLO refresh interval can improve the convergence of the protocol and reduce the energy consumption.

RODRIGO SILVA MELLO 11 July 2005 (has links)
[en] The crescent interest on the utilization of the low voltage power distribution grid as an alternative to provide services of telecommunication has motivated the systems development able to surpass the hostile characteristics of this environment as a communication channel. Therefore, this work seek to estimate the behavior of PLC network (Power Line Communication) through the modelling of the channel transfer function, to the range of 300 kHz to 30 MHz, by means of a set of parameters, which can be derived from the measure of the frequency response. Two models are presented to describe the complex frequency response of power line channels, covering all effects that define them, for example, the multipaths propagation generated by uncountable reflections on the network connections and selective fading in the frequency. The results of experiments show that these models present the most important characteristics of PLC network, representing useful and effective tools in the practice, offering the possibility to do researches to different network topologies, in order to study the impact of these effects on the PLC system. Moreover, they`re proposed channel transfer function adjustment models through empiric data and the least square method.

Channel modeling for polarized MIMO systems / Modélisation de canal pour systèmes MIMO polarisés

Quitin, François 06 April 2011 (has links)
This thesis treats of channel models for polarized multi-antenna wireless systems. Polarized multi-antenna systems are systems that use perpendicularly polarized, co-located antennas at the base station and at the mobile terminal, in order to benefit from the so-called polarization diversity. Such systems benefit from the advantages of MIMO systems while still maintaining a compact equipment size. Two models will be presented in this thesis. The first one is the Polarized-Input Polarized-Output (PIPO) channel model, the second one is the Polarized-Diffuse-Directional channel model. <p><p>The PIPO model is a statistical channel model for tri-polarized to tri-polarized communication systems. A tri-polarized antenna system is a tranceiver using three perpendicular antennas. The aim of the PIPO channel model is to have a model that has a simple mathematical structure, so it can be used for solving precoding equations or capacity calculations. Although the PIPO model has a very simple structure, it takes the following parameters into account: coherent channel component, cross-polar channel power imbalance, inter-channel correlation, short- and long-scale time variance. <p>Experimental measurements are used to parameterize the model. It is shown how the model parameters are extracted from experimental measurements, and the results are analyzed to allow further simplification of the model. <p><p>The PDD model, on the other hand, is a geometry-based stochastic channel model. It models the channel as a sum of clusters, where each cluster consists of groups of multipath components (MPCs). The PDD model includes two novelties that will be developed in detail in this thesis. <p>- The model considers polarization on a per-cluster basis. This permits to have a more accurate description of the polar-angular spectrum. <p>- The diffuse multipath component (DMC) is included by considering a diffuse component for each cluster. The diffuse cluster component is then modeled as the sum of a set of diffuse MPCs. <p>The model is specified in detail, and it is shown how the model can be generated. <p>Experimental measurements were carried out to parameterize the model. A new extraction technique for extracting the specular-diffuse clusters from the measurements is proposed. This technique is based on joint clustering of the specular MPCs and the bins of the diffuse component. The experimental results are analyzed, and superimposed with environment information to gain further insight into the physical aspects of clustered propagation. <p><p>Finally, both models are validated. Several validation metrics are introduced, and their pertinence in the context of polarized MIMO systems is highlighted. Both models are successfully validated, and the advantages and limitations of each models are investigated.

Hirrle, Angelika 29 May 2017 (has links) (PDF)

Design and performance evaluation of a full rate, full diversity space-time-spreading code for an arbitrary number of Tx antennas

Maasdorp, Francois De Villiers 18 September 2008 (has links)
Since the mid 1990’s, the wireless communications industry has witnessed explosive growth. The worldwide cellular and personal communication subscriber base surpassed 600 million users by late 2001, and the number of individual subscribers surpassed 2 billion at the end of 2006 [1, 2]. In order to attract and accommodate these subscribers, modern communication systems, like the Third Generation (3G) and Fourth Generation (4G) cellular networks, will have to provide attractive new features such as increased data throughput rates, greater system capacity, and better speech quality. These modern communication systems promise to have advantages such as wireless access in ways that have never been possible before, providing, amongst others services such as live television (TV) broadcasting to Mobile Stations (MS)s, multi-megabit Internet access, communication using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), unparalleled network capacity, seamless accessibility and many more. With specific, but not exclusive reference to the cellular environment, there are numerous ways to increase the data throughput rate and system capacity. From an economical perspective, it would be more efficient to add equipment to the Base Station (BS) rather than the MSs. To achieve these improvements the motivation to utilise transmit diversity’s capabilities have been identified as a key research issue in this study. Alamouti [3] proposed a transmit diversity technique using two transmit antennas and one receive antenna, providing the same diversity order than using one transmit antenna and two receive antennas. Since Alamouti’s publication in 1998, many papers in the field of Space-Time (ST) coding have been published. Current research in the field of ST coding consists of finding methods to extend the number of transmit antennas to more than four, while still achieving full rate, as well as full diversity which is the main motivation for this study. This study proposes a novel idea of breaching the limitations with ST coding theory by combining ST coding with Spread Spectrum (SS) modulation techniques in order to extend the number of transmit antennas to more than four and still achieve full rate as well as full diversity. An advantage of the proposed scheme, called Direct Sequence Space-Time Spreading (DSSTS) has over current Space-Time Spreading (STS) techniques is that it uses 50% less spreading codes. A performance evaluation platform for the DSSTS scheme was developed to simulate the performance of the scheme in a realistic mobile communication environment. A mobile communication channel that has the ability to simulate time-varying multipath fading was developed and used to evaluate the performance of the DSSTS scheme. From the simulation results obtained, it is evident that Walsh sequences that exhibit particularly good cross-correlation characteristics, cannot overcome the effect of the antenna self-noise in order to exploit the diversity gain by adding extra antennas, i.e. diversity extension. The research also showed that an optimal trade-off exists between antenna diversity and antenna created self-noise. Performance results of the DSSTS scheme in slow and fast fading channels for a different number of transmit antennas are also presented in this study. With the capacity analysis of the DSSTS scheme, it was shown that the addition of extra transmit antennas to the system indeed increased the system capacity. A further addition to this study is the investigation into the assumption that the channel should be quasi-static over the frame length of the ST code. A Space Sequence Transmit Diversity (SSTD) technique is consequently proposed that allows the transmission of the Alamouti symbols during one time interval instead of two. This relieves the ST code from the assumption that the channel should be quasi-static, allowing it to be used in a more realistic multi-user environment. A performance evaluation platform for the SSTD scheme was developed and used to obtain simulation results in a multipath fading channel. It was also shown that the proposed SSTD scheme is successful in combating the effects of multipath fading for small Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) user loads. However, as a rule of thumb, the square root of the spreading sequence length divided by two depicts the user load at which the SSTD scheme was not capable of overcoming the combined effects of Multi-User Interference (MUI) and multipath fading. / Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / unrestricted

Modelování vlastností digitálních modulace pro DVB-T v Matlabu / Simulation of the DVB-T digital modulation in Matlab

Málek, Pavel January 2008 (has links)
Digital Video Broadcasting (standard DVB) is a system for transmission of the television signals in the digital form. There are used a various types of modulations in this system as QPSK modulation is used in the systems of satellite video broadcasting DVB-S (Satellite) and M-QAM modulations in the cable transmitting DVB-C (Cable). This paper mainly deals with system of the terrestrial digital video broadcasting DVB-T (Terrestrial), where OFDM modulation is used. This type of signal processing is more resistant to the distortions caused by multipath transmitting, which is main problem in the DVB-T. Matlab application, which can simulate digital modulation and demodulation of the transmission signals in the DVB-T, is created in this thesis. The models of the transmission channel is inserted between structures of modulator and demodulator. The user of this application can set the parameters of the broadcasting (e.g. constellation, OFDM mode, guard interval insertion) and the type of distortions (additive noise, reflected and delayed signals). By calculation of the channel bit error rate (BER) user can study influences of broadcasting parameters to the quality of transmission.

Odhad parametrů přenosového kanálu pro systémy CDMA / Channel estimation in CDMA systems

Kadlec, Petr January 2009 (has links)
The subject of this work deals with the problem of channel estimation for CDMA systems. This method of multiple access when individual users share the same full bandwidth simultaneously and are differentiated with any of pseudorandom sequences, is now the most perspective method. That is proved by its wide implementation in mobile networks of the third generation and higher systems. This work describes basic theory principles of spread spectrum, above all DS-CDMA (Direct Sequence-CDMA) and furthermore some phenomena of radio wireless channel that affect changes in transmitted signal in its way from transmitter to receiver. Terms of fading, multipath propagation, loss, refraction, scattering of the wave and Rice and Rayleigh probability density functions are mentioned. The third chapter deals with yet known and used capabilities of channel estimation. Differences, advantages and disadvantages of so-called blind estimation or training-based estimation are discussed. Two algorithms: LS method and sliding correlator are analyzed in more detail. There is also description of their simulations in Matlab and some results of these simulations are discussed. The last chapter deals with comparison of main characteristics and achievable accuracy of wireless channel impulse response estimation by both methods, and their possible utilization in real live.

Simulace vícecestného šíření vícestavových modulací / Simulation of multipah propagation of multistate modulations

Polák, Ladislav January 2009 (has links)
The diploma thesis Simulation of Multipath Propagation of Multistate Modulations is focused on the development of an appropriate algorithm in MATLAB environment, which is capable to simulate the impact of the multipath propagation on received signal (error rate) on the basis of given parameters of the transmission channels. Mechanisms and characteristics of the wave propagation in communication environment, types of digital modulations and their most important parameters are described in the first part of this thesis. The second part is focused on the simulation itself. Created GUI (Graphical User Interface) is able to display constellation diagrams of transmitted and received signals, as well as their bit error rate. It is also possible to compare these data with the data of signal, which is passed by a non-fading channel.
