Proposta e implementação de um receptor optoeletrônico integrado para redes ópticas passivas (PONs) empregando multiplexação por divisão de comprimento de onda (WDM) / Proposal and implementation of a optoelectronic integrated receiver for passive optical networks (PONs) employing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)

Stilante Koch Manfrin 01 July 2003 (has links)
The present work describes the design and implementation of two configurations of an integrated optoelectronic receiver. The first one is similar to a previously reported design but with some modifications to improve its performance. The second one is a new proposal of this work. The goal of the receiver design and implementation was its application in high bit rate packet-switched passive optical networks (PONs) employing the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique to increase the network capacity, in particular on the connection branch of the network core with the final user, the access network. The main goal of the receiver design was to achieve a fast channel tuning, allowing a tuning time smaller than the required for the transmission of a single information packet, decreasing the tuning latency and, therefore, the rate of information packet loss. In order to accomplish this goal, the implemented and tested integrated circuits include the electronic switching circuit and the transimpedance amplifier for both configurations investigated. The measured data for both configurations confirm the expected input channel switching time results, of about a few nanoseconds, which is certainly useful for the expected bit rate of operation (approximate 5 Gbps). Additionally, experimental results concerning cutoff frequency and bandwidth, direct gain, isolation, on/off ratio, and noise characteristics of both implemented circuits are presented.

Intelligent supervision of flexible optical networks / Supervision intelligente des réseaux optiques flexibles

Kanj, Matthieu 20 December 2016 (has links)
Dynamic and flexible optical networks are among the evolution scenarios of the optical transport networks. These form the basis of the new generation of optical networks of tomorrow and enable the effective deployment of services such as cloud computing. This evolution is intended to provide flexibility and automation to the optical layer. However, it results in additional complexity, particularly in terms of the management and control of this new network generation. Until recently, the standardized routing and signaling protocols have been taking into account several optical parameters like the spectral bandwidth information, modulation format, and optical regeneration. However, other parameters (e.g., link optical powers, gain of optical amplifiers) are still required in order to efficiently operate large optical networks. In this context, there is a need to study the existing optical networks and the different integration methods of the photonic layer in a control plane. The goal is to get an automatic optical network that is flexible, programmable, and at the same time efficient from an economical and operational perspective. The use of flexible grid technology has an impact on existing optical networks, where almost all the equipment must be replaced, resulting in an additional cost to network operators. In this work, we study the current optical networks and evaluate the impact of flexibility on the existing infrastructures. Then, we identify several physical parameters to be controlled and propose protocol extensions in order to integrate these parameters in the GMPLS control plane. In addition, we develop the routing and signaling algorithms that allow the implementation of an efficient control plane that addresses the need for flexibility. Finally, the set of our proposals and solutions are evaluated on multiple network topologies with different traffic patterns in order to validate their relevance.

Online Resource Allocation in Dynamic Optical Networks

Romero Reyes, Ronald 13 May 2019 (has links)
Conventional optical transport networks have leveraged the provisioning of high-speed connectivity in the form of long-term installed, constant bit-rate connections. The setup times of such connections are in the order of weeks, given that in most cases manual installation is required. Once installed, connections remain active for months or years. The advent of grid computing and cloud-based services brings new connectivity requirements which cannot be met by the present-day optical transport network. This has raised awareness on the need for a changeover to dynamic optical networks that enable the provisioning of bandwidth on demand (BoD) in the optical domain. These networks will have to serve connections with different bit-rate requirements, with random interarrival times and durations, and with stringent setup latencies. Ongoing research has shown that grid computing and cloud-based services may in some cases request connections with holding times ranging from seconds to hours, and with setup latencies that must be in the order of milliseconds. To provide BoD, dynamic optical networks must perform connection setup, maintenance and teardown without manual labour. For that, software-configurable networks are needed that are deployed with enough capacity to automatically establish connections. Recently, network architectures have been proposed for that purpose that embrace flex-grid wavelength division multiplexing, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers, and bandwidth variable and tunable transponders as the main technology drivers. To exploit the benefits of these technologies, online resource allocation methods are necessary to ensure that during network operation the installed capacity is efficiently assigned to connections. As connections may arrive and depart randomly, the traffic matrix is unknown, and hence, each connection request submitted to the network has to be processed independently. This implies that resource allocation must be tackled as an online optimization problem which for each connection request, depending on the network state, decides whether the request is admitted or rejected. If admitted, a further decision is made on which resources are assigned to the connection. The decisions are so calculated that, in the long-run, a desired performance objective is optimized. To achieve its goal, resource allocation implements control functions for routing and spectrum allocation (RSA), connection admission control (CAC), and grade of service (GoS) control. In this dissertation we tackle the problem of online resource allocation in dynamic optical networks. For that, the theory of Markov decision processes (MDP) is applied to formulate resource allocation as an online optimization problem. An MDP-based formulation has two relevant advantages. First, the problem can be solved to optimize an arbitrarily defined performance objective (e.g. minimization of blocking probability or maximization of economic revenue). Secondly, it can provide GoS control for groups of connections with different statistical properties. To solve the optimization problem, a fast, adaptive and state-dependent online algorithm is proposed to calculate a resource allocation policy. The calculation is performed recursively during network operation, and uses algorithms for RSA and CAC. The resulting policy is a course of action that instructs the network how to process each connection request. Furthermore, an implementation of the method is proposed that uses a 3-way handshake protocol for connection setup, and an analytical performance evaluation model is derived to estimate the connection setup latency. Our study is complemented by an evaluation of the capital expenditures of dynamic optical networks. The main cost drivers are identified. The performance of the methods proposed in this thesis, including the accuracy of the analytical evaluation of the connection setup latency, were evaluated by simulations. The contributions from the thesis provide a novel approach that meets the requirements envisioned for resource allocation in dynamic optical networks.

Stens, Cassandra, Enoksson, Isabella, Berggren, Sara January 2020 (has links)
Derived from and inspired by the adaptive immune system of bacteria, CRISPR has gone from basic biology knowledge to a revolutionizing biotechnological tool, applicable in many research areas such as medicine, industry and agriculture. The full mechanism of CRISPR-Cas9 was first published in 2012 and various CRISPR-Cas systems have already passed the first stages of clinical trials as new gene therapies. The immense research has resulted in continuously growing knowledge of CRISPR systems and the technique seems to have the potential to greatly impact all life on our planet. Therefore, this literature study aims to thoroughly describe the CRISPR-Cas system, and further suggest an undergraduate laboratory exercise involving gene editing with the CRISPR-Cas9 tool. In this paper, we describe the fundamental technical background of the CRISPR-Cas system, especially emphasizing the most studied CRISPR-Cas9 system, its development and applications areas, as well as highlighting its current limitations and ethical concerns. The history of genetic engineering and the discovery of the CRISPR system is also described, along with a comparison with other established gene editing techniques.  This study concludes that a deeper knowledge about CRISPR is important and required since the technique is applicable in many research areas. A laboratory exercise will not only inspire but also provide extended theoretical and practical knowledge for undergraduate students.

Wellenlängenmultiplexing mit thermisch fixierten Volumenphasenhologrammen in photorefraktiven Lithiumniobat-Kristallen / Wavelength Division Multiplexing with Thermally Fixed Volume Phase Holograms in Photorefractive Lithium Niobate Crystals

Breer, Stefan 08 September 2000 (has links)
Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is essential for further enhancement of the transmission capacities of optical telecommunication systems. Key devices in WDM networks are multiplexing/demultiplexing components, which enable the combination/separation of several carrier waves with different wavelengths for the purpose of simultaneous transmission through one optical fibre. These components can be realized using Bragg diffraction from volume holographic gratings. Especially reflection holograms provide a pronounced wavelength selectivity which makes them attractive for free-space WDM applications. Holograms can be stored permanently in photorefractive lithium niobate crystals by the method of Thermal Fixing. Heating of the crystal during or after the recording process and subsequent development by homogeneous illumination at room temperature create nonvolatile holograms. The recording and development processes of Thermal Fixing in iron- and copper-doped lithium niobate crystals were investigated. Macroscopic Gaussian-shaped intensity patterns were used to analyse the origin of the fixing mechanism. Spatially resolved absorption measurements were performed to determine the concentration profiles of electron traps (Fe II/III) and protons. Results of computer simulations were compared with experimental results, which showed that protons can be found to work as compensators during hologram recording at temperatures around 180 degree C. Nevertheless thermal fixing without protons was possible, another compensation mechanism stood in. The obtained refractive-index changes were due to the electro-optic effect, other contributions could be neglected. With this detailed knowledge about thermal fixing, a two-channel demultiplexing unit was built by superposition of two thermally fixed reflection holograms in an iron-doped lithium niobate crystal. For this purpose a special two-beam interference setup with precisely adjustable writing angles was arranged in a vacuum chamber to eliminate thermally induced phase disturbances of the holographic recording procedure. Continuous development of the holograms by incoherent light was necessary. In the dark, the enhanced dark conductivity of the crystal used gave rise to a hologram degradation within about one day. Large diffraction efficiencies were attained (intensity losses between 2.3 and 5.2 dB only) uilizing crystals with high-quality polished surfaces. The crosstalk supression of the realized demultiplexer was > 25 dB, which is comparable with the performance of other multiplexing techniques like fibre Bragg gratings or arrayed-waveguide gratings. The low polarization dependence of the demultiplexer can be improved by superposition of two holograms for each channel.

Quantum dot based mode locked lasers for optical frequency combs / Lasers à blocage de modes à base de boîtes et bâtonnets quantiques pour les peignes de fréquences optiques

Calo, Cosimo 18 December 2014 (has links)
This PhD thesis presents a study on the optical frequency combs generated by mode-locked laser diodes based on low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures. In this work, the mode-locking performances of single-section Fabry-Pérot lasers based on different material systems are compared on the basis of the optical spectrum width, the timing jitter and pulse generation capabilities. Then, noticing that InAs quantum dashes grown on InP exhibit on average better characteristics than other examined materials, their unique properties in terms of comb stability and pulse chirp are studied in more detail. Laser chirp, in particular, is first investigated by frequency resolved optical gating (FROG) characterizations. Then, chromatic dispersion of the laser material is assessed in order to verify whether it can account for the large chirp values measured by FROG. For that, a high sensitivity optical frequency-domain reflectometry setup is used and its measurement capabilities are extensively studied and validated. Finally, the combs generated by quantum dash mode-locked lasers are successfully employed for high data rate transmissions using direct-detection optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. Terabit per second capacities, as well as the low cost of this system architecture, appear to be particularly promising for future datacom applications

Data center optical networks : short- and long-term solutions / Réseaux optiques pour les centres de données : solutions à court et long terme

Mestre Adrover, Miquel Angel 21 October 2016 (has links)
The spread of cloud services is driving a relentless increase of traffic demand in datacenters, which is doubling every 12 to 15 months. Along this thesis we study the evolution of data center networks and present short- and long-term solutions for their physical intra-connection. Today, rapidly-growing traffic in data centers spotlights the urgent need for high-speed low-cost interfaces capable to cope with hungry-bandwidth demanding new applications. Thereby, in the short-term we propose novel high-datarate low-cost optical transceivers enabling up to 200 Gb/s transmission using intensity-modulation and direct-detection schemes. Several advanced pulse amplitude modulation schemes are explored while increasing speeds towards record symbol-rates, as high as 100 GBd. High-speed electrical signaling is enabled by an integrated selector-power digital-to- analog converter, capable of doubling input baud-rates while outputting advance multi-level pulse amplitude modulations. Notwithstanding, data centers’ global traffic will continue increasing incessantly. Current datacenters rely on high-radix all-electronic Ethernet switches to build an interconnecting network capable to pave with such vast amount of traffic. In such architecture, traffic growth directly relates to an increase of networking components, including switches with higher port-count, interfaces and cables. Unsustainable cost and energy consumption that can be expected in the future calls for a network reassessment. Therefore, we subsequently present a novel concept for intra-datacenter networks called burst optical slot switching (BOSS); in which servers are connected via BOSS nodes through wavelength- and time-division multiplexed fiber rings organized in a Torus topology. Along this thesis we investigate on the implementation of BOSS nodes; in particular, the switching fabric and the optical transceivers. The main element within the switching fabric is the slot blocker, which is capable of erasing any packet of any wavelength in a nanosecond time-scale. On the one hand, we explore the use of semiconductor optical amplifiers as means of gating element to be used within the slot blocker and study their cascadability. On the other hand we develop a monolithically integrated slot blocker capable of handling up to sixteen wavelength channels with dual-polarization diversity. Then we present several transceiver architectures and study their performances. Transceivers’ signaling needs to fulfill two main requirements: packet-mode operation, i.e. being capable of recovering few microsecond –long bursts; and resiliency to tight filtering, which occurs when cascading many nodes (e.g. up to 100). First we build packet-mode Nyquist-pulse-shaped N-QAM transceivers, which adapt the modulation format as a function of the number of nodes to traverse. Later we propose the use of coherent-optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM). With inherent packet structure and high spectral tailoring capabilities, we demonstrate that CO-OFDM-based transceivers offer higher capacity and enhanced reach than its Nyquist counterpart. Finally, we compare our BOSS solution to today’s Folded Clos topology, and show that our BOSS architecture requires x400 fewer transponders and cables than today’s electronic switching networks, which paves the way to highly scalable and sustainable datacenters

Advanced modulation formats and nonlinear mitigation for spectral efficient optical transmission systems / Formats de modulation avancés et compensation de non linéarités pour les systèmes de transmission par fibre optique à haute efficacité spectrale

Fernandez de Jauregui Ruiz, Ivan 12 April 2018 (has links)
With the majority of the global communications being transported on submarine point-to-point fiber-optic systems, different cutting-edge technologies have been under research to cope with this unprecedented traffic growth. Continuous advances in high-speed integrated circuits have allowed the use of advanced modulation formats and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques to maximize the transmission spectral efficiency. With mitigation of fiber linear effects efficiently carried out by DSP with relative low-complexity, the capacity of modern fiber optic systems rests limited by fiber nonlinearities. To this extent, in the first part of this work, the performance and achievable benefits of low-complexity DSP techniques aiming to mitigate fiber Kerr nonlinear effects are investigated. Besides nonlinear compensation techniques, the use of multi-level modulation formats beyond 16QAM and high symbol rate channels have gained momentum to increase the system spectral efficiency. One of the major breakthroughs in the recent years, has been the introduction of QAM-based probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS-QAM), which has proven to outperform regular QAM formats. In this sense, in the second part of this work, the practical achievable rate increase brought by PCS-QAM for transoceanic distances is investigated. A theoretical and experimental comparison with other high-capacity formats is performed, and the design of a PCS-QAM for trans-Pacific distances is addressed. Finally, in the last section, several transmission records using the two above techniques are reported
