The Paranoid Style of Tea Party Politics

Joyce, Anthony Allen 25 June 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to examine the Tea Party movement from the context of Richard Hofstadter's writings on the paranoid style in American politics. The findings in this study suggest that the Tea Party is something of a paranoid movement, and it suggests that factors for individual paranoid political behavior within this movement are a result of Evangelical fundamentalism, the uses of social media and algorithmic targeting, anxiety towards outgroups, and the machinations of the modern media. An exploration of the origins of the Tea Party and its impacts on the American political system is conducted in order to define and observe the movement as a modern political phenomenon. This grassroots movement is to a large degree responsible for the Republican Party's continued move towards the far right, and it has caused infighting amongst Congressional Tea Partiers and moderate Republicans for influence within the party. These findings reinforce observations of Republican retrenchment and further leanings to the far right of the American political spectrum. This theory is of value since it offers an understanding of the political phenomena occurring within the Republican Party in the form of the Tea Party and allows the field of Political Science to examine and apply the effects of new forms of communication. Social media and the algorithms applied to individual online activity has grave impacts with regards to predicting political behavior and factors that contribute to the formation of an individual's political beliefs. Concluding theoretical assumptions depict the new forms of mass media as one key factor responsible for altering the way individuals consume and process information thus resulting in the continued rise of far right conservative ideology within the Tea Party. / Master of Arts

Escrita e as psicoses: de todo tratamento psicanalítico possível ao sinthome / Writing and the psychoses: from every possible psychoanalytic treatment to the sinthome

Faustino, Diógenes Domingos 29 October 2018 (has links)
This doctorate aims a psychoanalytic theoretical and clinical improvement regarding to the specificity of writing, considering initially that theres an original conceptualization of writing in the lacanian theory, more specifically, when Lacan treats the Real as his own symptomatic invention in response to the freudian discovery of the unconscious. It is intended from this formulation to say what makes and defines writing as a therapeutic artifice, especially in cases of paranoia, punctuating its specificity and difference in relation to speaking. For thism the main scope of our thesis will be James Joyce\'s peculiar writing style, weaving the possible relations with Schreber\'s writing. With the Irish writer, it is not only a question of bringing the coincidences with the original notion of writing, in Lacan with his topological theory of knots, but especially of taking a next step to the possible treatment of paranoia, which the elaboration of the delirious metaphor in the Schrebers case led us. Lacan attests the difficulty in writing the Borromean knot, because its writing would properly be characterized as a making (faire) from which a knowledge (savoir) could be supported without a subject supposed. So this writing (ascrita) will be considered as necessary and autonomous, especially in relation to any formulation that starts from a language, tied to the sense as a significant effect. Our thesis is that such writing (ascrita) would be supportive and would not only have a stabilizing effect on psychosis, but would also be a support for the Irish writer, such as the knot Borromean is a support for Lacanian theory

In treating Lucius, the clinical case of this work, the analyst noted the existence of a type of patient transfer which was manifested by loaning the analyst's image to attempt to invest libido in the external world. The dissertation construction process begins with a rescue of the writings of Freud, Lacan and Aulagnier about paranoia; passing to an elaboration on the absence of the gaze in psychosis, and then unrolling the construction of the concept of transference in it. At the end of the research, a new chapter was inserted because another enigma arose during this journey: the existence in the analyst of a pre-concept related to psychosis, which is portrayed from an ideal which is subject to subsequent developments and crossings in this clinic. Through Fundamental Psychopathology and Clinical Method, this research worked with the singular that emerged in the clinic, which, somehow, was revealed as a pathos in need of a logos / A dissertação Um olhar sobre a clínica da psicose: transferência e pré-conceito tem como objetivo discutir o enigma apresentado à analista diante da Clínica da Psicose.

Three States of the Mind's Eye

Huddleston, Lindsay 29 April 2012 (has links)
Three States of the Mind's Eye is a multimedia work composed of music, poetry, and video. The purpose of the work is to examine attributes of three different abstract states of mind: the dream, paranoia, and courage. The musical score both tells its own story as well as enhances the visuals and poetry as they are presented. This document will discuss the ideas behind the work, how the composer went about creating each section and combining them, and will provide musical excerpts, the poetry itself and other visual examples. All sounds for the project are synthetic or sampled and the use of technology will also be discussed. The thesis is divided into four parts: introduction, analysis, technology and workspace, and conclusion. / Mary Pappert School of Music; / Composition / MM; / Thesis;

Psicanálise e surrealismo

Limeira, Cláudio de Souza 25 October 2012 (has links)

Biopsychosocial predictors of paranoia in the attenuated psychosis syndrome

Shaikh, Madiha January 2014 (has links)
Despite a consensus that psychosocial adversity plays a role in the onset of psychosis, the nature of this role and the underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined the complex relationship between perceived ethnic discrimination (PED) and paranoid ideation and its mediating factors, in individuals with Attenuated Psychotic Syndrome (APS) using a virtual reality paradigm to objectively quantify paranoia. Secondly, a sensory gating deficit, indexed by P50 Event Related Potential (ERP) abnormalities was examined, and the combined effect of electrophysiological sensory gating deficits and psycho-social adversity on the development of psychosis was explored. Results showed that perceived maternal neglect and antipathy in childhood, PED and perceived social support were key factors in young adults with APS. Also PED was positively correlated with persecutory paranoia. Furthermore, individuals with APS displayed sensory gating impairments. Therefore, perceived exposure to adverse experiences and sensory gating deficits observed in individuals with APS are present before the first episode and are consistent with current biopsychosocial models in which early psychosocial stress, later psychosocial adversity and neurocognitive functioning plays a key role in the development of psychosis.
