The majority of low income households in South Africa have limited access to electricity, and typically cook on stoves fuelled by paraffin. Paraffin represents a fossil fuel. It is a relatively cheap fuel in South Africa. Another fuel that can also be used for cooking is wood pellets, which is a renewable fuel. It can be used in a similar way to that of paraffin and is relatively cheap compared to other renewable energy sources. To investigate if living conditions among low income households can be improved the focus of the study was to evaluate the sustainability of cooking on paraffin and wood pellets. This was done by comparing social, environmental and economic aspects associated with the two cooking fuels. The social aspects were investigated through an interview study, the environmental aspect through a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) and the economic aspects through a partial life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) focusing on the user phase.   The interview study showed that paraffin users considered four aspects as the most important when cooking, namely safety, health, affordability and quality. The study also found that the majority were willing to change to another cooking fuel if these aspects were fulfilled. The LCA showed that both systems score the highest on 9 out of 18 environmental impact categories over a 16-year perspective. The economic analysis showed that the user phase of the wood pellet system is more economically beneficial during the 16-year time period than the paraffin system. It was concluded that wood pellets could be used as an option to paraffin for cooking and would most likely increase living conditions for low income households. / Majoriteten av låginkomsthushåll i Sydafrika har begränsad tillgång till elektricitet och vanligtvis sker matlagningen på paraffinspisar. The presented master’s thesis has evaluated the possibility of commercializing a research project at the Royal Institute of Technologys (KTH) Department of Energy Technology (EGI) in Stockholm, Sweden, where a Stirling engine is used for renewable microscale power generation.  The purpose of the thesis has been to evaluate the current market situation and future prospects by composing a business plan under the working name MicroStirling. In the business plan a potential target group consisting of house owners, farming companies and small energy-intensive industries has been identified. The market is currently small but displaying tremendous possibilities and is likely to grow rapidly in coming years. By offering a unique, high quality product MicroStirling has a competitive edge; however, several risks threaten the success of the company. Market readiness and customer acceptance of the technology are significant market barriers. Short term focus should be concentrated on technology development to prepare for pilot projects in 2013 and a market introduction in 2014. A future successful commercialisation of the technology is viable although further technical and business development is required to finalize a product ready for a market introduction. / EXPLORE Polygeneration

Développement de formes orales divisées à libération prolongée par la technique de la pellétisation thermoplastique

L’étude des caractéristiques physico-chimiques du Compritol® (béhénate de glycérol) et du Précirol® (palmito-stéarate de glycérol) a été effectuée. Les méthodes d’évaluation consistaient en la calorimétrie différentielle à balayage, la microscopie sur platine chauffante et la rhéologie dans un rhéomètre capillaire à pression variable. Cette étude a montré une évolution de la structure cristalline de ces deux corps gras en fonction du temps et de la température de stockage. En effet, ces composés, après fusion et refroidissement, « recristallisent » sous une structure partiellement amorphe, qui évolue avec le temps en structure cristalline. Il est également ressorti de cette évaluation que ces deux excipients lipidiques présentent des plages de fusion bien distinctes. Cette caractéristique est conservée lorsqu’ils sont en mélanges binaires. Enfin, ces corps gras se déforment sous l’action de fortes forces de cisaillement à des températures inférieures à leurs plages de fusion. <p>L’utilisation du Compritol® et du Précirol® comme corps gras lipophiles pour former des microbilles à libération prolongée a alors été envisagée. Nous avons procédé moyennant une technique de fabrication simple et rapide appelée « la pelletisation thermoplastique ». Il s’agit d’un procédé en une étape qui met à profit le pouvoir liant des corps gras facilement fusibles et se passe ainsi de l’usage de l’eau ou de solvants organiques. L’appareillage utilisé est de type mélangeur granulateur à haute vitesse. <p>Nous nous sommes basés sur les renseignements fournis par l’étude de préformulation afin d’optimaliser les conditions de fabrication des microbilles. Le contrôle de la température du mélange est très important pour la réussite du procédé de pelletisation thermoplastique. La vitesse du bras du mélangeur, la température de la double paroi et le temps de sphéronisation constituent les paramètres clés pour réussir la pelletisation du mélange. Nous avons mis au point des formulations contenant 15% (m/m) de Précirol® et une quantité croissante de Compritol® variant de 3 à 65 % (m/m). La libération du chlorhydrate de phényléphrine, employé comme agent traceur, a déjà été ralentie pour les formulations contenant 25 % (m/m) de corps gras. Face à ces résultats encourageants, nous avons mis au point des formulations contenant 75 % (m/m) de différents principes actifs (chlorhydrate de ciprofloxacine, théophylline et kétoprofène) et 25 % (m/m) de corps gras. Ces formulations ont abouti à la fabrication de microbilles à libération prolongée. Une étude de stabilité menée sur certaines des formes finies a montré la stabilité des microbilles lipidiques pour autant que le principe actif incorporé dedans ne soit par lui-même facilement dégradable. <p>Afin d’élargir le champ d’application du procédé de fabrication, nous avons mis au point des microbilles flottantes à libération prolongée. Les formulations proposées contiennent comme excipients :les deux corps gras, un mélange effervescent (bicarbonate sodique/ acide tartrique) et du Methocel K100. The main aim of this master’s thesis is to elaborate the project documentation of a new restaurant Chalupa. Building is situated in area of the local camp on the edge of the town called Mořkov. The building has one above-ground floor and a partial basement. On above-ground floor, there are two main parts: restaurant and kitchen. Then there are also private room and sanitary facilities for both customers and staff. The building is designed as a CLT superstructure and has a gable roof. The vertical loadbearing structures and non-loadbearing walls are designed of CLT panels. The horizontal loadbearing structures are designed of reinforced cast-in-place concrete slab. Heating energy is supplied by pellet boiler. Ventilation is provided by air conditioning unit. Shading is provided by external louvers. In the third pard, I am creating the facility management plan for this building. The project and visualizations were carried out in the Autocad program.

Biobased iron pellet production : Assessment of the availability and sustainability of biomass as fuel for iron ore pellet production in LKAB

Iron production accounts for substantial shares of global coal use and GHG emissions. LKAB is Europe’s largest iron company and Sweden’s fourth-largest emitter of GHGs. To reduce its emissions, LKAB might implement biomass in iron ore pelletisation. It is therefore important with information on how the biomass demand can be met and what the environmental implications may be, but available research focuses on contexts which are irrelevant for LKAB. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the extent to which LKAB can replace coal with biomass in iron ore pelletisation by assessing the availability of biomass as well as its environmental and economic performance relative to coal.  The study includes slash, industrial residues, pellets, and willow. The biomass potential is assessed using statistics and calculations. The environmental performance is assessed based on an LCA combined with a qualitative sustainability assessment, covering land-use change (LUC), biodiversity, toxins, chemicals, eutrophication (toxic-chem-eut), and compliance with EU sustainability criteria. The economic performance is based on price statistics. In general, all assessed biomass sources can meet LKAB’s potential demand, but requires sourcing from different locations, at different prices, with different environmental impacts, and with different market effects. In northern Sweden (“Norrland”) slash is largely unused and has a very good potential to supply LKAB with biomass. Industrial residues have a good potential on the domestic level but lower potential regionally. The potential of domestically produced pellets is limited but the demand can be met by increased production or imports. Willow currently has a low potential, but there is good potential to increase domestic production. In general, the biomass fuels have substantially lower environmental impact than coal. The LCA indicates that slash and industrial residues have the lowest environmental impact, pellets has slightly higher, and willow has higher impact in most categories (also higher than coal in some categories, although lower in general). Slash, industrial residues, and pellets cause no impacts on LUC, biodiversity, and toxic-chem-eut. Industrial residues, pellets, and willow are compliant with EU sustainability criteria, but it is uncertain if slash complies due to a pending criteria revision. Willow has slightly positive impacts on biodiversity and toxic-chem-eut but slightly negative impacts on LUC. The cost for biomass relative to coal is uncertain due to price volatility. In 2020, coal had the lowest price, but its average price the past three years is twice the price for slash and industrial residues and on par with the price for pellets. If all fossil GHGs in iron production would be subjected to the EU emission trading scheme the economic competitiveness of biomass would increase. The study shows that increased use of biomass, both in LKAB and in general, can be achieved with reduced environmental impacts compared to coal. Future studies should map the effects of dynamic factors on environmental impact and costs, and quantify net environmental impacts, including spatial-specific changes. / <p>Betygsdatum 2023-07-07</p>

Wood pellet production has become an advancing industry for the sake of reducing greenhouse emissions into the atmosphere especially, in European Union countries. Researchers and industry executives seek new methods and materials to improve the pelletization process. Rice hulls or husks has the potential to aid in wood pelletization as they possess high calorific values. This study focuses on using rice hull derived bio-oil from pyrolysis, which will also decrease ash content, as an additive to aid in the wood pelletization process. Using two groups of rice hull derived bio-oil as an additive in wood pelletization: Group 1 uses heavy bio-oil at 0.2 and 0.5% concentration plus a control group, and Group 2 uses bio-oil with light keys added from distillation process at 0.2% and 0.5% concentration plus a control group, we hope to increase durability and calorific value in wood pellets while producing at a lower cost.

<b>Economic Studies of the Global Trade of Wood Pellets</b>

<p dir="ltr">This thesis investigated the international trade dynamics of wood pellets within the context of renewable energy transitions amid climate change concerns. In the first chapter, by employing gravity models with different estimators and specifications, we analyzed the determinants of trade flows of wood pellets. Additionally, we forecasted the future trade values of wood pellets under five shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP) scenarios. Our results showed the effects of some factors such as GDP of exporters, contiguity, and the distance between the two trading countries, were consistent with the economic theory. On the other hand, some other factors exhibited unexpected effects or conflicting results across the models. Regarding projections under five SSP scenarios, our results indicated substantial growth in trade flows, although potential overestimations are acknowledged due to the imposed assumptions. SSP3, which reflects a nationalistic scenario, is projected to have the smallest trade flows, while SSP5 anticipates the highest trade flows due to diminishing inequality and high GDP growth. Also, regional shifts in trade patterns were forecasted, with East Asia and Southeast Asia gaining prominence in imports and exports, respectively. Conversely, Europe’s imports and exports as well as North America’s exports are expected to decrease their shares in the global trade. Overall, our findings emphasize the complexity of trade determinants and underscore the need for nuanced forecasting methodologies to anticipate future trade dynamics accurately amidst evolving global scenarios of wood pellet trade.</p><p dir="ltr">The second chapter evaluated the effects of the Paris Agreement on the international trade of wood pellets. The growing concern about climate change has encouraged the global communities to take actions toward climate-change mitigation. As a form of such efforts, the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015 by 196 parties around the world and went into force in 2016. As a means to mitigate climate change, wood pellets have been used as fuels alternative to fossil fuels. Traditionally, Europe was the primary importer of wood pellets, mostly sourced from the United States and Canada. In the last decade, there has also been a significant uptake in East Asia, indicating shifting trade patterns and market dynamics in the wood pellet industry. This study employed an event-study framework to analyze the impact of the Paris Agreement on the global trade of wood pellets from 2014 to 2019, using import and export data at the regional level. Our results revealed distinct patterns in responses to the Paris Agreement in terms of adjustment speed and magnitude. Europe exhibited a rapid increase in both imports and exports immediately after the Paris Agreement. East Asia demonstrated a delayed yet substantial rise in imports, particularly after 2018. North America also swiftly expanded exports, following the agreement, while Southeast Asia emerged as an important exporter, particularly in supporting the East Asian market from 2017 onwards. We also found an increase in exports of non-pellet wood fuels from Africa. This finding indicates that international climate agreements not only contribute to the overall expansion of the global market of wood pellets but also reshape the market by involving more countries in international efforts to mitigate climate change.</p>

Dioxin emissions from small-scale combustion of bio-fuel and household waste

<p>Denna avhandling behandlar rökgasutsläpp av persistenta organiska föroreningar, framförallt dioxiner, vid förbränning av fasta biobränslen och torrt hushållsavfall i relativt små anläggningar (5-600 kW) utan avancerad rökgasreningsteknik.</p><p>Samförbränning av avfall och biobränsle i effektiva mindre biobränslepannor testades som en alternativ strategi till den vanligen förekommande storskaliga hanteringen och förbränningen fast hushållsavfall. Medan storskalig förbränning av avfall ger investeringsmässiga fördelar med rökgasreningsteknik etc. kan små lokala anläggningar ha transportmässiga fördelar och möjligheter till utnyttjande av lokala biobränsletillgångar. Källsorterat, torrt, brännbart hushållsavfall insamlades från hushåll i glesbygd och samförbrändes i brikettform med energigräset rörflen i 150-600 kW biobränslepannor. Endast undantagsvis understeg dioxinemissionerna gällande gränsvärden för avfallsförbränning och nivåerna av väteklorid i rökgas översteg gränsvärdena flerfaldigt. Det bedömdes att någon form av extra rökgasrening är nödvändig för att säkerställa nivågränserna. Dioxiner hittades också i det eldade avfallet, framförallt i textilfraktionen. Dioxinmängderna i rökgaserna var oftast lägre än i det ingående bränslet.</p><p>Intermittent pelletseldning gav oväntat höga utsläpp av dioxiner med en emissionsfaktor på 28 ng(WHO-TEQ)/kg. Vedeldning i en modern miljömärkt villapanna gav betydligt lägre utsläpp av dioxiner än eldning i en gammal kombipanna och eldning med full lufttillförsel, som kan jämföras med användning av ackumulatortank, resulterade i upp till 90% minskning av utsläpp av dioxiner jämfört med eldning med reducerat lufttillskott (’pyreldning’). Eldning av plastavfall i en vedpanna gav höga utsläpp av dioxiner.</p><p>Okontrollerad förbränning av trädgårdsavfall och hushålls avfall i tunna eller som öppen eld ’bakgårdsbränning’, gav stora variationer i utsläppsnivåer som bara delvis kunde kopplas till avfallsinnehåll. Resultaten visar att denna typ av förbränning kan vara en betydande källa till dioxiner i miljön, och ett emissionsfaktorintervall på 4-72 ng (WHO-TEQ)/kg föreslås för bedömningar av utsläpp från backgårdsbränning av avfall med låga eller måttliga klorhalter.</p><p>En sammanfattande slutsats av alla försök är att dioxin utsläpp beror på komplicerade samband mellan bränsleinnehåll och förbränningsbetingelser. Bränslen med mycket höga klorhalter av ger oftast högre utsläpp av dioxiner än bränslen med låga klorhalter medan små skillnader döljs av variationer i förbränningsbetingelser.</p> / <p>This thesis deals with emissions of persistent organic pollutants, primarily dioxins, from the combustion of solid biofuels and dry combustible household waste in relatively small facilities, 5-600 kW, without advanced air pollution controls.</p><p>Co-combustion of waste and biofuel in effective small boilers was tested as an alternative to prevailing large-scale management and combustion strategies for handling municipal solid waste. This approach includes no advanced air pollution control systems, but offers two advantages: limiting transport and providing scope to use local biofuel resources. Source-sorted, dry, combustible household waste was collected from households in a sparsely populated area and co-combusted as briquettes together with reed canary-grass in 150-600 kW biofuel boilers. Most trials showed difficulties to meet regulative limits for the emissions of dioxins valid for incineration of MSW and the regulated limits for emissions of hydrochloric acid were exceeded manifold. It was concluded that additional flue-gas cleaning will be needed to ensure that emissions are sufficiently low. Dioxins were also found in the waste, especially in the textile fraction. The mass of dioxins in the flue-gas emissions was generally lower than the mass in the fuel input.</p><p>Intermittent combustion of wood pellets in a residential boiler resulted in an unexpectedly high dioxin emissions factor of 28 ng (WHO-TEQ)/kg fuel. Combustion of wood in a modern environmentally certified boiler yielded considerably lower dioxin emissions than combustion in an old boiler, and combustion with a full air supply, i.e. with use of heat storage tank, resulted in up to 90% reductions in dioxin emission factors compared to combustion with reduced air supply. Combustion of plastic waste in a residential wood boiler resulted in high emissions of dioxins.</p><p>Tests of uncontrolled combustion of garden and household waste in barrels or open fires, ‘backyard burnings’, resulted in emissions with large variations that could only be partly correlated to the waste constituents. The results imply that this may be an important source of dioxins in the environment and an emission factor range of 4-72 ng (WHO-TEQ)/kg is suggested for estimating emissions from backyard burnings of lightly and moderately chlorine-contaminated waste.</p><p>A summarized conclusion from all of the experiments is that predicting emission levels from waste contents is not straightforward (except that fuels with very high chlorine levels will usually result in high levels of dioxins in flue-gas emissions). Moderate differences in chlorine levels will usually be masked by the effect of variations in combustion conditions.</p>

Endast undantagsvis understeg dioxinemissionerna gällande gränsvärden för avfallsförbränning och nivåerna av väteklorid i rökgas översteg gränsvärdena flerfaldigt. Det bedömdes att någon form av extra rökgasrening är nödvändig för att säkerställa nivågränserna. Dioxiner hittades också i det eldade avfallet, framförallt i textilfraktionen. Dioxinmängderna i rökgaserna var oftast lägre än i det ingående bränslet. Intermittent pelletseldning gav oväntat höga utsläpp av dioxiner med en emissionsfaktor på 28 ng(WHO-TEQ)/kg. Vedeldning i en modern miljömärkt villapanna gav betydligt lägre utsläpp av dioxiner än eldning i en gammal kombipanna och eldning med full lufttillförsel, som kan jämföras med användning av ackumulatortank, resulterade i upp till 90% minskning av utsläpp av dioxiner jämfört med eldning med reducerat lufttillskott (’pyreldning’). Eldning av plastavfall i en vedpanna gav höga utsläpp av dioxiner. Okontrollerad förbränning av trädgårdsavfall och hushålls avfall i tunna eller som öppen eld ’bakgårdsbränning’, gav stora variationer i utsläppsnivåer som bara delvis kunde kopplas till avfallsinnehåll. Resultaten visar att denna typ av förbränning kan vara en betydande källa till dioxiner i miljön, och ett emissionsfaktorintervall på 4-72 ng (WHO-TEQ)/kg föreslås för bedömningar av utsläpp från backgårdsbränning av avfall med låga eller måttliga klorhalter. En sammanfattande slutsats av alla försök är att dioxin utsläpp beror på komplicerade samband mellan bränsleinnehåll och förbränningsbetingelser. Bränslen med mycket höga klorhalter av ger oftast högre utsläpp av dioxiner än bränslen med låga klorhalter medan små skillnader döljs av variationer i förbränningsbetingelser. / This thesis deals with emissions of persistent organic pollutants, primarily dioxins, from the combustion of solid biofuels and dry combustible household waste in relatively small facilities, 5-600 kW, without advanced air pollution controls. Co-combustion of waste and biofuel in effective small boilers was tested as an alternative to prevailing large-scale management and combustion strategies for handling municipal solid waste. This approach includes no advanced air pollution control systems, but offers two advantages: limiting transport and providing scope to use local biofuel resources. Source-sorted, dry, combustible household waste was collected from households in a sparsely populated area and co-combusted as briquettes together with reed canary-grass in 150-600 kW biofuel boilers. Most trials showed difficulties to meet regulative limits for the emissions of dioxins valid for incineration of MSW and the regulated limits for emissions of hydrochloric acid were exceeded manifold. It was concluded that additional flue-gas cleaning will be needed to ensure that emissions are sufficiently low. Dioxins were also found in the waste, especially in the textile fraction. The mass of dioxins in the flue-gas emissions was generally lower than the mass in the fuel input. Intermittent combustion of wood pellets in a residential boiler resulted in an unexpectedly high dioxin emissions factor of 28 ng (WHO-TEQ)/kg fuel. Combustion of wood in a modern environmentally certified boiler yielded considerably lower dioxin emissions than combustion in an old boiler, and combustion with a full air supply, i.e. with use of heat storage tank, resulted in up to 90% reductions in dioxin emission factors compared to combustion with reduced air supply. Combustion of plastic waste in a residential wood boiler resulted in high emissions of dioxins. Tests of uncontrolled combustion of garden and household waste in barrels or open fires, ‘backyard burnings’, resulted in emissions with large variations that could only be partly correlated to the waste constituents. The results imply that this may be an important source of dioxins in the environment and an emission factor range of 4-72 ng (WHO-TEQ)/kg is suggested for estimating emissions from backyard burnings of lightly and moderately chlorine-contaminated waste. A summarized conclusion from all of the experiments is that predicting emission levels from waste contents is not straightforward (except that fuels with very high chlorine levels will usually result in high levels of dioxins in flue-gas emissions). Moderate differences in chlorine levels will usually be masked by the effect of variations in combustion conditions.
